Chapter 9
Remus read through the letter from Sirius, nodding and smiling as he did. They were getting along fine from the sound of it, other than the issues they knew were there, such as those with the house. As he kept reading, he chuckled when his old friend talked about the ghosts. At least it wasn't something calamitous and they were handling the situation. Sirius seemed to like them, from what he said, and so did the other two. The way he worded what he wrote seemed to indicate they were actually a big help. Which was good, because they had plenty to deal with.
From what Sirius said, they had it mostly under control with the deliveries they needed set up. While they hadn't received their first shipment of food yet, he said they had plenty to tide them over until it arrived, thankfully. Good. This way he didn't have to chance going to the store and picking up anything, thus having people get suspicious over the amount he was purchasing. As he read on, he nodded. Sirius was asking him to pick up a few bits, but nothing huge. They were catalogs for carpet, wall treatments and the like. Those he could easily handle and no one would think much was off. He would just send them along when he got his hands on them and the three could take it from there with the elves picking up orders for them. From what Severus said the night before they left, the house needed completely redone, so he anticipated this was coming. He also decided he would pick up others not asked for, such as for decorating, clothes and anything else he could think of. While they might not need them now, he was certain they would in the future. Best to have them ahead of time than to find themselves in a bind and have to wait for him to go retrieve them before sending them off.The last part of the letter was Sirius asking for information about what was going on. Again, nothing he didn't anticipate. While the three were good and hidden, they needed to know what was happening with the efforts to find them so they could stay safe. When it came to the whole mess after them vanishing, Remus had to smile. It had worked ever so well. So far, from what he knew, no one could find any trace of them, be it the Ministry or Albus. In fact, Albus was rather flustered over the lack of information he could gather. It helped that Madam Bones was irked enough with the old man that she was investigating him! Oh, it amused Remus to no end that she was. From what he could gather, she was upset enough over what she saw as his manipulations and underhanded schemes with Harry she wanted to know the why behind it. And she was turning over every rock she could get her hands on to get it. Molly and Arthur had been called in then grilled rather intensely, from what they said, about plenty, including Harry's home life. So were others. He was quite amused as everyone understood to give up what they knew since Madam Bones would sense if you weren't and dig more then come after you again if you didn't come out with the entire truth. The whole mess had everyone scrambling and Albus worried. Of course, he wasn't worried enough to stop what he was doing, but he was being more circumspect with how he went about what he did was all.If Remus knew Madam Bones half as well as he thought he did, he was sure she would uncover the new way of going about matters as well then Albus would be in even more trouble than before. It would end up being quite amusing to watch it play out. He just had to make certain he stayed as far out of the mess as he could so she didn't look too hard at him. It was something he could manage. After jotting down a few cryptic notes on what he needed to tend to, Remus hid the letter in a place no one could get into, no matter what. Then he stood with a groan. He would go to the Alley, pick up what was needed then come back and reply. It was best to tend to it fast so he could destroy the letter in case someone decided to be a little too nosy. No, he didn't want anyone catching on to what he knew.
“Okay, we've managed to get the areas we knew we needed done the best we can,” Sirius started, looking between the two seated at the table with him. “I have an idea on how to go about dealing with the rest that is not methodical but practical.”
“What do you have in mind?” Severus asked after a sip of his tea. They had spent the morning working on the lab. Though he was persnickety about how he liked his work area set up, they managed without him having to growl. The other two knew what he was like, so they took it into account and just followed his instructions. As the lab and library were done, other than changing out carpet, wall treatments and such, they were going to press on to the rest of the house. And it was daunting with all that needed done.“I say we tackle the hallways first, all of them. While we do, we ward up the rooms that aren't done yet so if there is something lurking in there we don't know about, it can't get out. Initially, we warded up everything in the halls so we could tend to it, so it's safe enough. We would just have to stick together to work, nothing more. If we do the halls first, we can safely travel anywhere. I think, between the three of us, we can get them all done today. Once we do, we start down here on the bottom floor and go room by room working our way up. We can save the top floor and basement for last. Even if we do use them, it won't be for much.” Sirius explained, looking between the two then waited to hear what Severus had to say. After thinking it over, Severus gave a slow nod. “Yes, a good way to tend to the matter. As we didn't see much damage as we worked, it shouldn't take long. We'll just either repair, de-pest, if any are still around, vanish and get everything ready for the elves to take on the decorating. I don't think the hallways should take us more than a day.”“While we do, can we come up with ideas of how we want to decorate? I mean more furnishings than color schemes and carpet, of course,” Harry tossed in, looking between the two. “We have storage rooms full of furniture and catalogs for that as well. It's something we can get in place now if we want, unless we want to order it.”“Another sound suggestion we'll go with,” Severus nodded, pleased they were coming together with a good idea. “We do need to decide the most basic scheme for the house so it's not a mish-mash of styles. If we do, we can gear what we are doing towards that goal. My thought was keep the one that's here and add something a tad Gothic, like what we have for the bedroom. Any objections?” He thought the scheme would fit perfectly with the house and all that was in it. As it was, all of them loved the tapestries, suits of armor and general feel it had already.“Fine with me,” Sirius said when he saw Harry nod. “Not much on the decorating whatever, just so it's comfortable. We do need to work on the lights. The elves have said some don't work right. It's probably just the spells need refreshing, of course, so we need to keep that in mind as we go. And I want more in the halls anyway so it's not so dark.”“We'll add the lights to the list of what we do as we go along,” Severus told him, making a note on the clipboard Harry always carried with him. “I do agree we need better lighting, especially in some areas. Let's see what the issue is with what's there. If it's just not enough, perhaps Eddie knows where there are more fixtures. The spells on those are easy enough. Even if there aren't any, we can set up candelabras that will go with the scheme we want and make the flames safe. Not an issue.”Severus then leaned back in his chair, assuming it was all they needed to discuss on the matter since the two agreed and said, “There is something I want to plan for later this week. Once we receive a letter from Lupin about what is happening with the hunt for us, I want to plan for a trip into town. We can get any supplies we need and we also need to concern ourselves with items like clothes for colder weather. While we do fine with warming charms, we're all going to need better clothes for what's coming.” Eyes flitting to Harry, he then sighed and added, “Harry needs more than just those as we all know. We might as well make a day of it and tend to all we need, pick up some more groceries to tide us over until the first delivery and such.”“Where are we anyway? We never asked,” Harry inquired, curious. It hadn't been mentioned as far as he could remember.“We're about midway between Bristol and Gloucester. I thought we would go into Gloucester for the errands. While it's not as big as Bristol, there isn't the Magical population there either. I thought it safest.” Severus explained.“We should be safe here then,” Sirius nodded, pleased with where they were situated. “Yeah, we'll need to get plenty of clothes.” Then, quietly, he added, looking at Severus, “For all of us. The two of us have clothes that would really stand out, Severus. They're more along the lines of what our kind wear or of the fashion when we were in school. People are going to notice. Just a few outfits that are more the style now or something really basic, like jeans and such.”“Another point well taken,” Severus sighed, making a note about the clothes as well. “We can glamour ourselves well enough the looks aren't an issue. In the next day or so, we'll sit down and make a list of what we want to pick up. And we can get some items for the house as well. Muggle bits work well for some of this, so it's easy enough.”“We'll need to work with you on more than the standard warming charms, too. It's nice now, but autumn is here and you'll need them,” Sirius told Harry with a nudge. When Harry agreed, he then focused back on Severus and added, “We probably need to check the roof, or send the elves to tend to it, so we know if there are any leaks. Just to make sure. They can easily repair them if there are. We just don't want to get blindsided if we get one of the storms that tends to come through at this time of the year.”“I'll send one to check while we work today. I inspected it when I bought the house, but a better gander is a good idea. If there are any, they should be minor,” Severus told him distractedly as he made a note about it as well. When he finished, he said, “Are we done? If we are, I say we get started. Eddie can tag along to keep an eye out for us just in case.”When he heard the two reply in the affirmative, he finished his drink then stood with a groan. There was much to tend to, so it was best to get on it.
After supper, the three were ensconced in a parlor off the area they initially stayed in. They had finished the hallways and had managed to get this room mostly cleaned out. While it wasn't done like the two they initially used, it had one feature they all wanted; a huge ornate fireplace. About mid-afternoon, one of the storms that were common in early autumn had rolled in, turning the weather chillier than normal. Even now, the storm was still passing through, the wind rattling the glass in its panes and driving the rain against them. It had that wet, chilly feeling that seemed to permeate everything, so they started the fire. Since then they had just relaxed. For a time, they played cards to stay occupied. After they finished, Sirius had conjured a mattress in front of the fireplace and they had all lain down. At the moment, they were just talking. It wasn't about much, just the friendly kind about all manner of topics between people who were close.
For now, Sirius was on one edge of the mattress with Severus on the other, Harry sandwiched between them. With a soft groan, Sirius turned over facing the other two, draping an arm over Harry. “This is nice,” he said, softly, smiling a tad.“It is,” Severus admitted after Harry said the same thing. “Quite comfortable.” Then, changing topics, he asked, “Anything else either of you want to do tonight or just lay here?”Though Harry made it clear he just wanted to relax since they were all tired after working all day, he asked, “Can we do what we used to when we were all getting used to each other? Read aloud a little each night? That was something I really liked.”“We can,” Severus said with a pleased smirk. “I think it was something all of us enjoyed, honestly.”“I vote we do it each night before bed,” Sirius tossed in, propping himself up on his elbow and looking at the two. “You pick the book, Severus. With all you've read, we know you'll choose one we all like.”“Easily done,” Severus told him, sitting up. He already had the title in mind and knew the two would enjoy it. “I'll read tonight then we'll take it in turn from there.” Then he picked up his wand and summoned the book he was thinking of, their version of a mystery novel.Harry flopped over on his side and pressed up against Sirius, smiling. Severus had a wonderful reading voice and he adored listening to him, so this would be great.Sirius then sat up and conjured some extra pillows, making sure they were braced upwards so they didn't slip down then settled in, snuggling up close to Harry, arm around him. As Severus started reading, he smiled. Oh yes, this was wonderful.
About a half an hour later, Severus was tired. Reading aloud had soothed him and helped him relax to the point he was starting to fall asleep. After shutting the book, he glanced at the other two to tell them that was enough then smiled. They, too, seemed to have found it relaxing because they were both asleep. He put the book aside above the mattress and rolled over, spooning up to Harry. Though he should wake them so they could move to their room, he found it quite nice where they were. After all, they were the only ones in the house, so it didn't matter where they slept.
He draped his arm over Sirius and Harry then shut his eyes. As he drifted off to the sounds of their deep breathing, the crackling of the fire and the storm outside, he had a bit of a smile on his face. This was quite nice and he adored it.
As the clock in the hall softly chimed eleven, the ghost known as the Blue Lady slipped into the parlor where the three were sleeping. Red was in there checking on their boys, so she decided to join her. Seeing the three curled up together, she smiled. “They look very comfortable there and ever so sweet curled up like that.” She said softly, making certain not to wake the three of them.
“They are quite good together,” Red assured the ghost that had been Queen Jane Seymour in life. Like herself, Queen Jane adored children. She was the wife of Henry who had died shortly after giving birth to his only surviving son, well, the one to survive birth anyway, and didn't have the chance to see her child grow. The fact she didn't made her a somewhat melancholy ghost and sad, hence the nickname the Blue Lady. “They will enjoy having you around, trust me. My interactions with them and observations tell me they won't cause problems. In fact, they seem quite pleased to have ghosts. I've heard all of them express the opinion that having us around is seen as good luck for them.”“I don't think I'm ready to meet them yet, but I'll observe some more,” the Blue Lady told her friend softly with a tiny smile on her face. “Just give me time.”“You have all you need,” Red told her with a reassuring smile. “And help if you want. We know the elves will respond to our orders and summons, so you can assist all you like. I very much doubt the three will object.” When the Blue Lady nodded, Red took another look at their boys and smiled at the way they were curled up together. Then she bid the Blue Lady goodbye and went to do her nightly rounds of the house. They were trying to hurry it along in helping, so she wanted to check everything over and talk to Eddie to see what they could manage.Rather than leave, the Blue Lady stood there, hands folded demurely in front of her, watching the three sleep, a small smile on her face. After a few minutes, she summoned one of the elves then had them not only make the mattress thicker and more comfortable, but cover them with a light blanket. Then she had them move the book up to a small table close by. Once the elves finished, she conjured a chair, though it was a ghost-chair, then sat down in it. Watching the three, whose only reaction to what the elves did was curl up tighter to each other, she smiled a little bigger. As she sat there, she glanced over to the corner where an old record player, what Muggles called a Victrola, was. Though it was cleaned off, their boys hadn't fixed it yet. With a sigh, she looked up and asked the house, “Please?” She knew she didn't have to go further than the one word for it to get a clue. Then she smiled when she felt the contented rumble. Another glance at the Victrola and she smiled. Instantly, it looked brand new and the turntable began to spin. Unlike the Muggle version, their kind didn't play one record at a time, something you had to change. Instead, it spun, playing the song the person that was using it wanted to hear. In this case, it was an ancient lullaby, very soft and the volume low. When the music started to play, the Blue Lady began to sing quietly, hoping it produced pleasant dreams for the three.Somewhere in them, the three sleeping heard the soft music and melodious voice. Sirius gave Harry a squeeze then draped his arm a little further so his hand rested on Severus' side, though he was still touching Harry. Severus, too, seemed to hear it, pressing tighter to Harry, draping his arm over the two, giving them a squeeze. Harry just smiled in his sleep and gave a contented sigh. The Blue Lady was pleased and continued on, enjoying the reaction.
As the Blue Lady continued singing, the house rumbled contentedly then the parlor the three were in began to slowly repair itself. Oh, it wasn't completely, but areas the three hadn't started on yet, such as the stained wallpaper and faded carpet slowly cleaned themselves up and began to look new. The windows started to clean themselves, soon sparkling. Other small areas began to tidy up until the whole room looked brand new. It would take all night, until about a half an hour before the three awoke, for it to finish, but the house was helping.
Outside, though it was still pouring down rain, Hedwig and Buckbeak were on the patio area the three men had cleaned off the day they took the tour of the outside. Buckbeak was sprawled on one of the benches there with Hedwig perched on his head. Of course, the magic around it activated, making sure there was as spell that was something akin to an invisible dome over the patio area which kept the rain off, so they were nice and dry. The two were intently watching what was happening.Though the three men had cleaned the area up, the house was doing them one step better. The bricks scrubbed themselves clean. The fire in the pit was lit and blazing nicely, keeping the two animals warm. As the minutes ticked on, the cleaning spread out, scrubbing everything on the patio then to the statues. Though the trio had cleaned the plants off them, they hadn't been scrubbed yet, so they lay dormant, unmoving, like standard Muggle statues. When the cleaning reached them, they were scrubbed of the years of dirt and debris then became the glowing white marble they were. Once cleaned, the statues stretched and began to move like they normally would. Though it was years since the last time they were animated, they began talking again like normal, speculating about who might be in the house now then the old conversations began to pick up like there was no interruption.Hedwig gave a soft hoot as she watched, looking down at Buckbeak then clicking her beak at him. The hippogriff clicked his beak back before watching what else was being cleaned. While the cleaning didn't extend beyond the patio area, it was soon looking almost new.The owl, too, looked back up to watch then flapped over to a perch which appeared by the bench Buckbeak was lounging on. Settling down, she observed what was happening intently. As she didn't feel anything bad or wrong about the magic, she didn't make a move to wake her masters. Instead, she was content to watch the magic work.
After about an hour, when the three on the mattress were soundly sleeping, the Blue Lady stood. She vanished her chair then glanced at the Victrola and waited for it to stop. When it did, she smiled at the three once more then floated out. While she wasn't ready to reveal herself yet, she would soon. She just needed time to get used to them, nothing more.
As she floated off, she decided to go talk to the Mad Monk. He wanted information about their boys before he revealed himself. She would give him what she knew so far. When she did, she was sure he would reveal himself soon. From what she knew, he had already taken a liking to Sirius. From her perspective, she thought the two would get along famously. Yes, he could help as well. While she floated away, searching for the Monk, she hummed the lullaby softly, smiling. She had a good feeling about these new occupants.
