Chapter 8
Remus leaned against the jamb of the door to the loo, smiling as he watched Harry get ready to leave. Oh, they still had over an hour before they left for tea at the Weasley's, but Harry took time when it came to his ablutions.
Unlike when they whisked him away from that awful home of his, Harry took pride in how he looked and wanted to put his best foot forward when they went somewhere. He even did so at home, honestly. Though he and Sirius sometimes joked about it with him, in a good-natured way that is, it was something they adored. To them, it symbolized a change in Harry, something he did for himself, no one else, and showed his growth in so many areas, gaining a self confidence he didn't have before. The way they saw it was it was a damned good step. Far better than what he had been like. No, his looks and how he was groomed, dressed, whatever, didn't come before normal areas, but it was something he tended to.As he watched Harry work on his hair, he smiled bigger. Since he had hooked up with his girlfriends, Harry had finally managed to get the hair James cursed him with to lay flat. The girls had taken it as a personal challenge to make it behave and they managed. Now Harry could do it as well. It took some special products, of course, but it was finally tamed and Harry could make it do what he wanted. And it looked great. Added in was his normally pitch black hair had highlights to it. Most of them came from his time spent outside, either at their pool or the beach. There were a few added with dye, though. It just intensified the effect and looked amazing. Coupled with his tan Harry looked wonderful, far better than the boy they took off with all those years ago.Eyes sliding down Harry's body as he fixed his hair, Remus smiled. He looked incredible. Unlike for so long, Harry had nice clothes that weren't hand-me-downs from Dudley. They fit, looked great and accentuated how he looked. Before they moved to California, they made sure that Harry had nice clothes that fit him, but once his girlfriends took over when they became friends, the wizard started looking amazing. They had an excellent fashion sense which allowed them to help Harry pick out what looked good on him and suited his personality. No, he didn't dress to the nines and wear the high fashioned clothes his friends did, he stuck to what he was comfortable with, such as jeans or the like, but they looked fantastic on him.Today he was in a nice pair of jeans, a button down shirt and drake-skin boots. While they looked simple, Remus was well aware all of them were designer labels. Harry paid for his own clothes, something he and Sirius never said a word about, so he could buy what he wanted. Honestly? They offered to pay for them more than once, but Harry wouldn't let them because he knew what they cost. Sirius had taken to funneling money from various investments into Harry's vaults to cover more than he spent on his wardrobe. After all, the two of them wanted Harry happy. Since the clothes and other personal items did, they went about it this way. If Harry did know, he didn't say anything about it. So, it worked. One of the things he and Sirius would admit to was that Harry was a spoiled man. While it wasn't in the way of those like Draco Malfoy or his ilk were, in that Harry demanded and expected all he wanted in the world, but more like he had all he could ever want and more. Bits like the pool in the basement and rooftop garden were examples of the spoiling. Those were done just for Harry because he liked such items and would miss what they had in California. Over the years, there had been plenty of other examples of such bits. He and Sirius were of the opinion that Harry had missed so much during his young life while at the Dursleys that they wanted to make up for it. Oh, it was never said aloud, but they both knew what it was. Then came them having to duck and hide for so long with a 'normal' life just not possible. So, they had gone a tad overboard with some areas. The difference between Harry and so many others who were 'spoiled' was Harry never asked, beyond necessities, for anything from them and appreciated everything they did or gave him, making sure to tell them so. He never took for granted that he would just be given whatever. No, he was grounded enough because of what life used to be like that he always appreciated everything in a way so many others wouldn't. He also made it clear they didn't have to buy or procure anything for him, ever. All Harry wanted was for them to be happy and together, nothing more. Of course, that was easy enough and always made Remus smile. While some would say such things to just sound good, he knew Harry meant it.Remus watched as Harry finished with his hair then worked on double-checking to make sure everything was just right. With a smile, he said, softly, “You know, I would say you take as long to get ready to go anywhere or in the mornings as a girl would, but I've seen how long it takes for your girlfriends to get ready to go anywhere.”With a laugh, Harry looked in the mirror at Remus then said, “Well, true. I admit I take forever. It just takes time to make sure it's right and I look nice. Nothing more.”“You always look quite good, Harry,” Remus told him as he stepped up behind him. He then ran his fingers through the back of Harry's longish hair and smiled again. As expected, the styling products Harry used made it feel like there was nothing in his hair, but they held it in place, even if you touched it or something mussed it up. “And we have no objection to how long you take, as you well know.”Then Remus fingered one of the highlights in the back that he knew was from dye and not natural sources. Brow furrowed, he asked, “How are you going to manage to get your hair highlighted? Do you know? It was something your girlfriends did for you. I suppose you can have it done professionally, of course.”“I could, but don't want to go that route,” Harry told him, making sure his clothes were just right and no lint was on them. “If I go to one of ours, I need you both along. I don't see either of you sitting there and cooling your heels for the time it takes. Sirius would go mental just waiting around with all the woman gossiping.”“Very true,” Remus admitted with an amused chuckle and slight smile.“There's also the catch of the minute I show up with the two of you, everyone and their aunt will know it's me. Then word will spread.” Harry admitted, straightening up. “Not a chance we want to take.”“Again, I agree,” Remus said with a sigh and shake of his head. “I suppose there is the Muggle route.”“No chance,” Harry told him with a wrinkle of his nose. “They use really harsh, smelly chemicals. It might work and they could get the color right, but it takes for-bloody-ever and I don't want to put up with going about it that way.” Before Remus could say anything, he turned around and grinned at him, “So, I have several of the kits to do it myself. It's the same ones we use to get it done. I figured I'd teach you how to do it for me.”With an amused chuckle and shake of his head, Remus said, “Oh, I'm not sure about that venture, Harry. I know nothing about adding color to someone's hair.”“It's easy, trust me,” Harry assured him, giving him a nudge, still grinning. “I can do the top and sides myself, no problem. It's the back I can't. If I can manage, you can. Nothing to worry about. I swear, it's simple and you won't have a problem.”Still chuckling, Remus said, reaching out to finger the colored areas on the top of Harry's head, “Well, I suppose I can give it a try. If you know what you're doing, I should be able to manage with some coaxing. As long as you don't end up having a fit if I mess it up.”“I won't and you know it,” Harry told him with a winning grin. “Besides, you'll do fine. If you can brew all that complicated whatever you do, this will be easy.”“We'll give it a try,” Remus told him, still smiling. Then he leaned forward and gave Harry a soft kiss. When he broke it off, he asked, “Are you mostly ready? If you are, you need to give me a hand pulling Sirius away from the footie game on the telly. I think he's ready, but you never know.”“I am,” Harry said with a laugh and shake of his head after they broke off the kiss. “I think I just have to grab my robe, nothing more. It's not something I'll put on until we're ready to leave.”Harry, like so many Muggleborns, still liked his Muggle clothes without the robe. Though, after their time in California, he was learning to wear it more, especially since he found robes he liked that weren't the same boring style that was worn here in the UK. As he was taking to wearing them, he was less likely to stand out in busy places as so many recognized Muggleborns or Halfbloods by their not wearing the traditional robes. Even more of a plus was Harry was wearing very expensive robes, the kind that were usually reserved for older Pureblood families in the UK, though that wasn't the case in the US. Yes, with him and Sirius along most would be able to guess who he was, but any little bit would help.Remus stepped back and let Harry slide out the door to the bedroom. As the younger Wizard went to grab what he needed, he said, “We're going to try to make this as fast as we can. I do understand that everyone will want filled in and to get answers, but we're going to try to hold them off. Hopefully, with your phone call to your 'girlfriends' going on, we can distract everyone enough and you won't get pulled in.”“Don't count on it,” Harry snorted, shaking his head as he cast the ironing charm on his robes then draped them over his arm. “They're going to do everything in their power to get out of us what went on. Then push for all kinds of bits.”“Oh, we know,” Remus told him with a soft sigh. “Just let me and Sirius handle the worst of it. You focus on your call.”“I'll try,” Harry told him, making sure he had his phone with him, though it was a given since he didn't go anywhere without it.With a smile, Remus put a hand on Harry's shoulder then gave it a squeeze before starting to guide him out. “Now, we need a plan to pull Sirius away from the telly to make sure he's ready. He is just about as bad with footie games as he was with Quidditch in school.”“It might take stunning spells,” Harry laughed, shaking his head. “You know him. We never should have let him watch them in that pub in Argentina. One hint of the first signs of enthusiasm and we should have dragged him out of there, Remus!”“Yes, we should have known better,” Remus chuckled, smiling as he guided Harry along. “Now we're paying for it! So, we need a plan. Think, Harry!”“Stunning spells, I'm telling you!” Harry laughed, heading down the stairs.
Though he gave the now turned off telly a longing look, Sirius let out a blurry sigh then said, nodding, “What we have will work fine. Just let Remus and I take on the worst. You focus on your call to the girls,” he said.
“I don’t think it'll be that easy,” Harry said with a shake of his head. “I doubt Hermione has changed at all and will just grill me, no matter what I do or say. The more we refuse to reply to whatever, the more people are going to want answers then will get suspicious of whatever if we don't give them,” Harry snorted, leaning back and propping his feet on the coffee table.“Let us worry about them,” Remus told him, putting a hand on the back of his head and giving it a gentle rub. “I think we can go for distraction when it comes time for your friends to call. I'm sure most will be curious about some of what is said. If it gets too bad, put your earbuds in and that will make it to where they can't hear you and you them.” Because Harry did so much on his phone, he had bought an expensive set of earbuds that blocked noise from around them and made it to where it acted like a silencing bubble around him when he talked. You could see him, of course, but not hear what he said. It would work perfectly for making it to where no one could talk to him and try to wiggle so much out.“It's something I can do,” Harry nodded. “I just don't want to seem rude. You know, like the ones that will ignore everything around them and focus on the phone. I can't stand when someone does it to me, so I don't like to do it to anyone else.”“In this case, you're not,” Sirius told him, giving him a nudge. “We made it as clear as we could when we accepted the invitation that you would be busy on the phone for most of the time we're there as it was something we promised you. They understood and said its fine. Perfect excuse for this time.”“We can use whatever to distract them. Your phone alone will do so. Once Marissa calls and they hear the ringtone then her voice, we can use it to steer the conversation elsewhere, like funny stories or whatnot,” Remus told him. “It's something we've done before and works well.”“Oh, I'm sure she and the other girls will give us plenty to talk about as people will want explanations about some of what's said,” Sirius grinned.“True,” Harry chuckled as the girls were definitely different than most will have encountered before.“In all seriousness, we do need a get together like this to judge what might be coming and how to handle it,” Remus told the two of them softly, glancing between their faces. “While the Weasleys might not go into what others do and will use a softer touch, they're going to try. It'll give us the first sampling of what we have to contend with. We haven't had to take on dealing with such matters in a long time.”“There is that,” Sirius admitted with a sigh. “Look, we'll do what we can to push this as fast as possible then get out. We also have to play nice because of so much. That's a delicate line to toe and we have to make it look good. And to make it clear Harry won't be doing what he used to.”“It means we're going to have to give up the bonding at some point, which is going to make plenty all the worse. Especially if we don't give up part of the reason why we did it,” Harry added with a shake of his head and sigh. “I mean, everyone is going to think something perverse.”“We'll handle that end as well,” Remus assured him, though he knew Harry was right. The whole situation was going to end up quite complex and plenty wouldn't handle parts of it well.“While that's true, we don't have to give up the age it was done and won't,” Sirius told them, looking between their faces. “All they need to know is we did it, nothing more. And we sure as hell aren't giving up where we did it. While I doubt they could get anything out of the Russian bureaucracy, what with how chaotic it is, we don't want to take the chance as it would look really off if they found the original. Then there would be questions coming that we sure as hell don’t want to answer.”“Yes, a topic we'll avoid at all costs,” Remus agreed with a nod. “We truly do need to worry about someone or another digging into matters if we don't give up answers.”“Another true statement,” Sirius groused, slouching down. “We'll give up some, enough to get them off track, then go for distraction. I'm sure we can pull something out to keep them going in circles until we can get the hell out of there. Let's see what presents itself.”“This will end up a nightmare and more stressful than anything we've done in a long time,” Harry admitted, shaking his head. “And we're going to need to do something to relax when we get back home.”“Oh yes,” Sirius agreed with a mirthless, dry chuckle. “I plan on having a couple cold ones when I get home, if not something stronger.” Then he grinned and added, “Or more of what we smoked last night.”Hearing the obligatory disapproving sigh from Remus, he gave him a nudge with his elbow, “It's no worse than the beer, you know.”“It's still a drug,” Remus pointed out, though he was smiling a tad.“And so is booze. Cigarettes are as well,” Harry shot right back. “And your chocolate.” Before Remus could argue, he pointed out, “Chocolate has caffeine in it, a lot of it. That's considered a drug and you know it.”“He has a point there,” Sirius grinned, shoulders shaking at Harry's logic. Then he nudged Harry and said, “Have Marissa send us some more, just in case. It's a potions ingredient and everyone knows what comes out of California is far superior to anything we can get elsewhere.” Then he looked at Remus, who had his normal disapproving expression on his face and added, gently, “For you around the full moon. You know it helps, Moony. And it's not illegal to smoke it here. Anything we can use to help you will be something we need, especially with all we're dealing with. Doesn't matter to us and you know it.”“Very true,” Remus admitted with a patient sigh.
After checking his watch, Sirius gave a resigned sigh then said, “We have to get going shortly. I don't know where the Burrow is, so I'll have Harry side-along me and you can meet us there, Remus.” Hearing agreement from the two of them, he said, “Just remember, we're doing this as fast as we can manage then getting the hell out. Let's hope we don't get roped into more like it any time soon.” Then, with a groan, he stood to get into his robe so they could go. The faster they got there, the quicker they could get home and just hope like hell they didn't get drawn into a mess.
As Molly bustled around in the kitchen, making sure that everything was perfect for the company coming, Arthur was seated at the table with Albus. Oh, the aging Headmaster wouldn't stay, of course, as they didn't want the three wizards feeling as though they were being bombarded, but there were some bits and bobs Albus wanted him to cover.
Mostly, it had to do with the phones and what was coming with them. Albus wanted to see if there was a way to get their hands on them before most could. As they would be dead useful, he was going to try, for more than one reason. And, of course, the rest had to do with seeing if Sirius, Remus and Harry were amicable to once more helping with what was going on. None of them were sure about that end, of course, so feelers needed put out to see what they had to say. Well that and their basic plans aside from the business.Once he looked over what Albus wrote down, he nodded, “I'll do what I can, especially with the phones, but the other part I'm not sure of. We have everyone coming over, including Bill and Charlie, so I'm not sure they won't feel overwhelmed. I don't want to upset them, of course.”“Oh, I do understand,” Albus assured him. “Just try. I'll put out feelers in a letter as well to see what they're willing to do on the matter of the Order and helping with the war effort. The phones I'll leave to you as Sirius has to deal with your department for them.”“Let me see what I can manage. I'm not sure, Albus,” Arthur admitted.“At the very least, see what you can do to find out what happened and where they've been. It won't help what's going on now, of course, but will give us a base we can work with to understand. Well, and why Harry's last name changed. There are many reasons it could have come about, so I’m not sure of the why behind it.”“We're all curious about the name change as well, so I planned to ask.” Arthur admitted. Pushing the paper back to Albus, he said, “We'll do what we can then get with you later. Let's see what comes. I know they said Harry has something or other to do on the phone while he's here, though I’m not sure what they meant. They just mentioned his friends. I'm sure that'll give us an opening for some areas.”“Any little bit helps,” Albus told him with a smile. Then, with a soft groan, he stood to leave. It was best he was gone before they arrived so they didn't feel overwhelmed. Once Arthur passed the information he could manage, they would go from there with it.
