Chapter 9
As the train headed out of London Harry was still alone in the compartment, so he grabbed his book out of his trunk and settled in. He didn't expect to remain alone as there were still plenty of people in the aisle looking for a compartment, but he needed to ensure he was ready in case someone came in he didn't feel like talking to. While he waited, clutching his book and stretched out across the seat, he watched out the window, heart beating faster than normal. Not only was he on his way to Hogwarts, but he was away from his aunt until winter break. This was perfect! And he had Sirius with him to watch over him. Even better.
After getting comfortable while listening to Sirius explain what was coming, Harry looked up when there was a soft rap on the door of the compartment. He saw Ron standing there with a moon-faced boy clutching a toad. “Yes?” He asked, though he assumed he knew what the answer would be as both were clutching their trunks.“Mind if we join you? Everywhere else is full,” Ron sighed, shaking his head. Harry was at least someone he had met, so he was more comfortable sitting with him than a complete stranger.“It's fine,” Harry said, sitting back up in case someone wanted to sit on the bench with him. With a relieved sigh, Ron motioned the boy he introduced as Neville in then they began stowing their trunks by his. “Thanks, mate,” Ron said after flopping down when he finished. He then pulled Scabbers out of his pocket and put the sleeping rat on the seat by him. While Sirius listened in to what was said as Neville introduced himself, he was paying more attention to the rat than anything else. Oh, he knew that fucking rat, that's for damned sure! He was thankful the rat didn't sense anything off and was dozing away. Meanwhile, a myriad of questions ran through his head about how in the hell the rat ended up with the Weasleys. Though he didn't remember the one in the station, he knew a couple in the Order all those years ago. He was sure it was related in some way. Now he had to figure out what to do and how to explain it to Harry later. For now, he wouldn't say anything. Let Harry enjoy his first ride to Hogwarts without too much disturbing him. Plus, he had no way to deal with the situation yet. Until he did, he would just keep an eye on the fucking traitorous rat. Before the year was out, people would know Peter was still alive and he was innocent, that he vowed.Though his eyes kept drifting to the rat, he was paying attention to the conversation with the three. At the moment, Neville and Ron were gawking at Harry's scar after he said his last name when they were doing introductions. It made him smile. He was sure he knew who Neville's parents were. Though he didn't have first-hand knowledge, he had heard they were in St. Mungos after being tortured into insanity. It was sad that the two who had lost the most in the last war were in the same compartment on their first ride to Hogwarts all these years later. However, he was heartened that Harry was talking to the two. Maybe he would end up with closer friends than he had in the school in London. He didn't think, what with how Harry was, he would let them too close, but friends were good.
After the snack cart came through, Harry was once more relaxed back and reading his book. Though Neville and Ron tried including him in the conversation, he wasn't much interested as the two were talking about all kinds of bits Harry didn't understand. While Sirius tried explaining parts to him, as they dealt with completely Magical households, he could understand why his godson wasn't interested. After all, he had no real foundation to understand and the two didn't take it into account or even bother to explain, just assuming Harry knew. While Sirius was sure Harry and the two would be friends, they weren't destined to end up close. It was fine and he took it into account. After all, Harry hadn't met more than the two yet. He would just give it time.
It wasn't until the door to the compartment banged open that Harry looked up. Sirius narrowed his eyes at who he saw; Draco Malfoy and two goons, kids he didn't know the name of. As Harry's eyes narrowed at the intruders who were already insulting Ron and his clothes, Sirius reminded him who this was. With how his godson was, he was sure Harry would say something. It was also a good bet Draco didn't recognize him from the robe shop as Harry didn't have his cap on.Draco quickly ignored the latest Weasley then scanned around, “We've heard Harry Potter might be on the train.” He was about to say more when he was interrupted.“I am,” Harry said coldly, lowering his book and glaring at the ferret-faced boy. “What do you want?”“Just to invite you to come sit with us in our compartment,” Draco said, looking smug as he spied the tell-tale scar on his forehead. Potter would make a great friend. “We can give you a rundown of who is who, including those you really don't want to associate with.” Then his eyes drifted to the red in the face Ron, lifting his nose in the air.”“Thanks, but I don't fancy being friends with bigots,” Harry snorted, glaring at the pale boy.“Excuse me?” Draco snarled, flushing. Where in Merlin's name did that come from? He had no clue! And he wanted to know so he could set the record straight.“I was the one in the robe shop with you when you made the comment about Muggle-borns not being allowed in Hogwarts. It was my aunt who told you off,” Harry told him coldly. “And considering your father was a Death Eater, though he wiggled out of punishment after the war claiming Imperious, I don't think you're someone I want to associate with.” Sirius had filled him in on plenty when it came to so much. Since this wasn't his aunt and no one really knew him, or had any idea what he knew about the last war, it was safe to toss it out there. “Why don't you move along. There is a whole train of people for you to insult and harass. You're not welcome in this compartment.”Now flushed a bright red, Draco was ready to snarl back when a loud ringing made him about jump out of his robes. Quickly looking around, wondering if it was an alarm of some kind to let one of the adults know there were issues, he backed out of the compartment, ready to vanish as fast as he could.Harry snickered internally at the reaction he saw then pulled out his mobile and answered it, “Yes, Aunt Petunia?”Draco's jaw dropped at what he saw, not sure what that—whatever it was happened to be. However you could hear the voice on the other end, so Potter was talking to someone. Eyes narrowing, he hissed, “This isn't over, Potter.” Then, nose in the air, he stomped off, vowing revenge. As the magic on the train made his phone go wonky, the conversation with his aunt didn't last long, something he was thankful for. When he hung up, having forgotten to put the stupid device in his trunk, he stood to do just that. Then he saw the wide-eyed looks on Ron and Neville's faces.“Mate, what in the world was that thing?” Ron asked, hand holding a Cauldron Cake poised halfway to his mouth. He had never seen anything like it in his life and was curious.“A mobile phone,” Harry explained, making sure the blasted thing was buried as far down in his trunk as he could get it. Later than night he would make sure it was put somewhere so even if it did ring, he wouldn't hear it. He was just hopeful the magic at the castle made it to where it wouldn't function. “My aunt gave it to me for a good grade card,” he said with a sigh, flopping back down on the seat and picking up his book.“Is it anything like a Muggle telephone? I've seen those in the village not far from where we live,” Ron asked, highly curious after stuffing the Cauldron Cake in his mouth.“Same kind of device. This you can just take everywhere and it works without the cord,” Harry explained. “It doesn't like the magic, though,” he added, thankful for it.“Brilliant!” Ron grinned. Then he began asking about all kinds of bits, encouraging the quiet Neville to do the same. After all, it was fascinating and he was sure his dad would love to hear all about it.
While he stood in line waiting for his sorting, Harry was trying not to fidget all over. He was actually in the castle. Not only was coming across the lake amazing, but looking around was just as fascinating to him. The adventure had finally begun!
As he stood there, he listened to Sirius. They had covered the Sorting Hat before, of course, so he knew what to expect, having rolled his eyes, mentally, when Ron talked about wrestling a troll. All he knew was he wanted no part of Slytherin. He knew too much from Sirius to want to go there. While he did want to end up in the same house as his parents and Sirius, he didn't care if he didn't manage. All the houses were good by him as long as it wasn't Slytherin. As he stood there, waiting and listening to the other sortings, he tried to stay calm. It wasn't easy, but he managed. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, his name was called. Heart hammering as he stepped up to the stool, he could hear the loud twitters in the hall and caught people standing to look at him as he walked that way. After sitting down and the hat being placed on his head, he immediately said, “Not Slytherin, please!”“Well, well, well,” the hat chuckled in his ear. “Most interesting. There are two of you here, though only you need sorted. The other was sorted by me many years ago.”Harry panicked at the knowledge the hat seemed to know about Sirius and felt his godfather's hand on his shoulder. Sirius was with him, though making sure to stay in his shadow. He hoped the hat didn't talk to anyone!“Don't worry, what I know I keep to myself,” the hat assured him. “Your secret is safe with me.” Then it pressed on, “Oh, you're a tough one. Though you would do wonderful in Slytherin, the brains—yes, you would be perfect for Ravenclaw. There is also courage there, so much of it. And you would fit in Hufflepuff as well. Where to put you, though, is a tough decision.”“I don't care as long as it's not Slytherin,” Harry stated firmly, eyes screwed tightly shut, willing the hat to hurry up and not pick Slytherin.“Very tough,” the hat mused. Then it said, after muttering, “I think I know where you'll do best.” Rip at the brim opening, it then announced, “Gryffindor!”Harry grinned in relief and heard the shouts from the Gryffindor table, he took the hat off then hurried over to the house table, relieved. He took a seat by one of the Weasley twins and watched the rest of the sorting, listening to a happy Sirius congratulate him.
As Harry ate, talking to Seamus and Dean, occasionally with Fred and George, who were joking around with him, Sirius was pleased. While Ron and Neville seemed to have become fast friends, Harry had seemingly attached to a couple people. He actually liked Fred and George, so he was going to encourage it all he could. As long as Harry let a few close, he would be happy. There were ones in the house he already couldn't stand, though.
Percy Weasley was one. There was something about the prat he already didn't like. Hermione Granger was another. She was already on his nerves with the know-it-all attitude of hers. Yeah, well, if she thought she'd end up at the top of the class with no competition, she had another think coming. Harry would be able to give her a damned good run for her money. They wouldn't factor in those from Ravenclaw. While he wanted to roam around, he didn't. Instead, he stayed attached to Harry. The hall was too full with teachers and Albus, who would notice something off, for him to do so. It was tricky doing what he could already. Thankfully, he could mimic Harry's shadow perfectly, so no one noticed anything off. He was just keeping his eyes and ears peeled for anything off or overhearing something useful. At nights, when Harry was sleeping, he would go roaming to see what he could pick up. He would also have to test spells on various places so he didn't set off an alarm of some kind. Of course, he remembered what used to be around. If it was the same set of spells, he would have no problem. This was going to end up tricky as well, but he would not let Harry go it alone. And he had to work on doing something about Peter. After another scan around, making damned certain he knew what was going on, he focused on Harry. Then he smiled. Harry was talking more to Seamus, Dean and the twins than he had to most others he encountered in the past. Good! Let him. While he hoped Harry would end up close to at least one of them, he wouldn't count on it. It was something he would have to wait and see on, nothing more. Tonight he'd talk it over with Harry and see what he said then go from there. As the feast ended, Sirius scanned around again. He knew most of the teachers, thankfully, so he had plenty of information on them. Snape—yeah, he knew that arse too. He was just stunned he was teaching after all he pulled. The only one he didn't know was the new Defense teacher. He'd have to do some snooping to find out what he could then he would go from there. Tonight, if Harry could stay awake, he'd fill him in on all he knew about most of them then they'd go from there. While listening to Albus' speech, mostly something standard, his brow furrowed when the old Headmaster started on the part with the one floor being off-limits. While he couldn't remember any classrooms being up there, it had been safe in the past. Now he was curious what was going on, sure Albus was hiding something. Already some at the table were talking about it. From what Fred and George were telling Harry it was unusual. Yeah, this wasn't a coincidence and he would figure out what was going on before there was a full-blown mess to deal with. When the feast was finally over and the students started moving towards the dorms, Sirius trailed along with Harry. Sure, he listened to the students, but he was also paying attention to everything else going on. There were entities in the castle he needed to keep watch for as he wasn't sure if they could tell he was around or not. Peeves came to mind there, so did the ghosts. Until he knew if they could detect him, he needed to avoid the lot. He'd manage, it would just be tricky for a while.
By bedtime, all had gone smoothly. Harry had written the letter to his aunt, of course, so she didn't do something foolish. Then he had talked to those in the dorm for a while before he shut the curtains on his bed, telling everyone he was going to sleep. Of course, he was tired, but they needed to talk first. Everyone understood as they were all planning on doing the same. The first night in the castle was always stressful for the firsties with most of them waking a couple times, so he was planning for it and would stay cautious.
Once Harry shut the curtains, they both realized part of the significance of their wands being related. What Sirius planned to do was walk Harry through a very simple privacy spell. It was one he would actually learn in a couple of weeks. As Harry already knew a few spells from practicing what was in his books, he thought it would be easy enough. Like before when he was home, he walked Harry through the spell. Unlike some of the others, the wand movement for this one was rather tricky, so he put his hand over Harry's, holding his own wand, to show him the right way. It was then his hand melded with Harry's and their wands actually joined. In fact, as they moved their hands, it was as though the two became one. Giving it a try, he found he could actually do the spell. Harry's hand and wand became an extension of his own. This way, he could do any spell he wanted. With a grin, he cast the spell, feeling wonderful to do magic again, though he made sure Harry understood how to perform it. It was a phenomenon he would have to explore later since they didn't have the time right now, but he was excited by this development. So was Harry. When he finished the spell, he settled back with Harry. His godson was sprawled out on his side, so he curled up to his back with his arm draping over him. Giving Harry a squeeze, he said, “Right, let's go over some of what you need to watch out for. Since you've now seen the castle, you'll know better what I'm talking about. Let's start with Snape then go from there.” When Harry nodded, he walked him through everything he knew, though it was the quick version. Harry was tired enough that he wouldn't go into the whole thing. After he finished, he said, seeing Harry look concerned, “Don't worry about it. I'll always be with you. If it's something you need help with, I'll tell you how to go about whatever or assist. Nothing to worry about. I'll make sure you get everywhere and know what you need to.”“All right,” Harry nodded, trying to suppress a yawn. He was tired, but knew whatever Sirius had to say was important, so he would listen and stay awake. With a chuckle, Sirius gave Harry a squeeze. “I know you're tired and might not remember part of it, but I want it out there.” Then he sobered up. “There is a bit I do need you to know as it's an issue I'm going to have to handle.”“What's it about?” Harry asked, brow furrowed since he was concerned. The look on Sirius' face told him it was serious.“That rat Ron Weasley has,” Sirius said softly. “Remember me telling you about Peter being a rat Animagus?” When Harry nodded, looking wide-eyed, he explained, “Ron's rat is Peter.”“Are you sure?” Harry asked, sitting up slightly, eyes overly wide.“Damned sure,” Sirius told him with a nod. “I saw him in that form enough I know it by heart and can tell it apart from any other rat. It's also missing a toe. It matches the finger he cut off. Trust me, this is Peter. I don't know how he ended up with the Weasleys, but he did.”“What are we going to do about it?” Harry asked, mind already working over the problem. While he knew the world thought Sirius was dead, he wanted him cleared to prove he didn't betray his parents. While he knew the truth, he wanted everyone else to as well. Besides, he wanted the person that did betray them to pay.“That I don't know either,” Sirius admitted with a shake of his head. “Just don't do anything yet. Let me think it over and come up with some way to reveal it's him. If I can, I'll make sure it's in front of everyone. It's not something I can come up with overnight. And it would look damned strange if you knew about Peter, his Animagus transformation and plenty of other bits. So, we need to bide our time. You just focus on school, let me worry about this bit.”“It's not that easy, Sirius,” Harry told him softly with a shake of his head. Then he sighed and added, “I'll try, though.”“I'll handle it, trust me,” Sirius told him, giving him another squeeze. Then he grinned, “You worry about your grades. I have a challenge that will keep you plenty busy anyway.”Harry snuggled back into Sirius and chuckled, shaking his head a bit. When Sirius said something like this, it meant he wanted him to do something a little sneaky. And he always enjoyed it. “What do you have in mind?” He asked, waiting.“That girl, Granger, the know-it-all,” Sirius said. After wrinkling his nose a bit after what he saw of her earlier, Harry asked, “What about her? I get she was put in this house, but I don't think I like her much.”“Makes two of us,” Sirius admitted. “I've seen people like her before and don't like them. They are the kind that need taken down a peg or be given a run for their money. I want you to do the latter. From what I've seen of her so far, I bet she's plenty smart. What I want from you is to give her a good trouncing in the grade department. You're already plenty ahead because of the work we did after you got your books. It should help. I'll do what I always have and help you with your homework. It's a damned good bet you can either stay neck and neck or beat her in that department. All I want is for you to try.”“Oh, I think I can manage,” Harry chuckled, grinning. “Let me see what she's like. Either way, I plan to do my best in all the classes.”“All I can ask,” Sirius grinned. “You'll manage. There is at least one class you'll have a problem with, though not because it's hard. More like it's bloody boring as hell and always was. History. The ghost that teaches it can put you in a coma, fast. So, we'll do that a bit of a different way.”“Boring isn't good, Sirius,” Harry told him with a sigh. He was tired after the excitement of the day, but wanted to hear about the teachers before he attended the classes so he was prepared. “What are some of the teachers like? I mean besides Snape since you don't know.”“I'm sure he's a right ruddy nightmare,” Sirius groused, shaking his head. “And I'm damned sure he'll give you problems right off the bat because he hated your dad. Since you look like James, I bet he's going to take it out on you. Don't worry, I'll be there the whole time and won't let him get away with it. You worry about what you're doing and let me handle the rest.”Since Harry was tired and Sirius knew he had to get some sleep so he was up for the following day, he began talking a little about the teachers, well, what he knew about them. He wouldn't broach anything Harry would have to remember as he was sure his godson would doze off soon, but it would help to relax him enough so he could sleep. While he wanted to go roaming the castle tonight to find out what he could or get a feel for so much, he wouldn't. It could wait for the following night. Harry might be tired, but the newness of the castle and so much else which had gone on might make it to where Harry woke a couple of times. If he did, Sirius would be there to reassure him of whatever. When Harry was finally used to the situation, he would start nightly roamings so he could understand what he was dealing with then prepare. With what he knew, he probably had a lot to protect Harry from.
