Chapter Nine
“Put this on,” Harry said and he tossed some sort of necklace to Draco.
“What’s this?” the blond asked as he looked at it. It was a silver chain with a silver plate at the end of it, like a tag. On it it said his name.
“It’s a dog tag. The Muggles use them to identify soldiers in battle should they, you know, die.”
“Bloody hell,” Draco said as he looped the necklace around his neck. He was busy tending to the wounded and there were a lot of injured wizards. Each Healer had eight to ten patients and all at once. He was stretched thin and he hadn’t slept a wink since he’d arrived.
“Yeah, I know. It’s depressing,” Harry said and he lit up a cigarette.
“Didn’t know you started smoking. It’s bad for you, you know?” Draco said in passing as he tended to a wizard’s leg that was cut badly and oozing blood. His clothes were blood soaked but he hardly noticed.
“Yeah, I know but Luna has me so stressed over this whole baby thing. I don’t even want kids,” Harry laughed.
“Did you tell her that?” Draco moved his wand over the man’s injured leg and then watched as the wound healed over.
“About a thousand times.”
“So going off to war must be like a sort of vacation for you Potter,” Draco said.
“Ha! You know, as sick as it is you might be onto something Malfoy. You’re really good at this stuff aren’t you?”
“What stuff are you referring to? Hey, yes you,” Draco said pointing to a man who was cowered in the corner and doing nothing, “I need you to hold your hand over this while I grab some bandages,” he ordered but the man ignored him.
“On your feet soldier. You were given an order by a superior. If one of the Healers tells you to do something, you do it. Got it?” Harry Potter shouted and the man scurried to his feet and scampered off saying, “Yes Sir,”.
“Authority hasn’t gone to your head any, has it?” Draco smirked.
“I was just trying to help. You look as if you have your hands full,” Harry replied.
“Ah yeah, well thanks anyway. That wizard is in shock. I didn’t have time to get to him, but I wanted to give him something to do to take his mind off whatever horror he witnessed that rendered him that way. Now thanks to you, he’s run off.”
“Shoot, I’m sorry, I didn’t know,” Harry said and he frowned.
“Nah, it’s alright. He’ll probably end up dead, like the rest of us,” Draco said dourly as he mixed a potion up for one of his patients. “Hey, you haven’t come across any vampires named Barnabus, have you?”
“Can’t say that I have. I got a nest of them though an hour ago. They were hiding in a barn. Got the jump on us. It was a close one,” Harry said puffing on his cigarette. “You know though, they wear tags too. The vamps wear bracelets though and we’ve been plucking them off the dead. The Ministry wants to keep track of which vampires we got and which ones might still be out there.”
“Really? Interesting,” Draco said. “I’d like to take a look at those bracelets.”
“You can do it later. I’m supposed to tell you to return to your bunk.”
“I can’t do that, look around Potter. You’re about ten Healers shy of what you need out here.”
“Even so, you have to sleep. Now Malfoy. It’s an order,” he said and Draco rolled his eyes. It was his worst nightmare having Harry Potter outrank him.

I took a deep breath and then barged through the doors to Janet Mungo’s office. “Hermione, how good to see you?” the Healer said as she shuffled stacks of parchment at her desk. “Your owl said it was urgent? I hope everything’s alright?”
“Well no actually, things are not alright, not in the least.”
“Oh no and here Draco tells me that you were, well--What seems to be the problem?”
“You. You’re the problem. You’re after my husband,” I stated bluntly.
“Excuse me,” she said and she stood and closed the door. “Are you having delusions dear?” she asked and she crossed her legs and ran a hand through her long blonde hair.
“No delusions, Janet,” I said with narrowed eyes. “I heard you in the corridor. "Let me be more specific," I said and I leaned forward and pounded my fist on the desk. “I heard you claim to love my husband. I also heard you threaten him. How could you? I was your patient! I trusted you.”
“Yes, I was your Healer for a time and I served you well. That has nothing to do with Draco! I was in love with him as far back as Healer training school. We were dating you know? Then you came along and fucked it all up! You took him from me.”
“I did what? He’s my husband! We have a child together.”
“A child you thought was another man’s up until recently,” she laughed carelessly. “I’m not going to rehash the past. Let’s focus on the future, shall we? Do you really think that you can make him happy in the long term, you, with half your memory and mood swings from hell?”
“Oh my God, I can’t believe you’re talking to me like this! You are the worst Healer in this whole place. No wonder Draco wanted me to stop seeing you. You shouldn’t even hold a license to treat a pesky pixie let alone live people!” I was incensed, and that was putting it mildly.
“Be honest Hermione. You cry at the drop of a hat. You have panic attacks doing the simplest of tasks. You are scared to leave the cottage. You are an inattentive Mum and you put your son in harms way. You are stuck on the mental level and emotional level of a teenager!”
“I am bloody not!” I said sounding very much like a teenager. Tears welled behind my eyes upon hearing her accusations about my condition but I would not give her the satisfaction of seeing me cry.
“I can help you. I can,” she said and she reached across the desk and limply squeezed my hand. I snatched my hand away. “Those aren’t my words dear. Draco wrote those words about you in his report.”
“You’re lying.”
“See for yourself,” she said and she slid my case file across the desk. My hands were shaking when I reached out to take it. I scanned the hand written page hoping to hell she was wrong.
“As you can see its dated four days ago,” Janet said.
“Exhibits childish outbursts and tantrums. Unable to mother her young child. Severe agoraphobia. Fear of crowds and inability to function normally in society. Prone to panic attacks. Resistant to all known forms of therapy. Prognosis negative. Will more than likely require extended duration institutionalization?” I dropped the parchment on the floor and cast my eyes downwards as tears trailed down my cheeks.
“As you can see, your so called husband signed it.” She wasn’t lying, he had signed it. Worse, was that he wrote those words about me. He thought I was crazy all this time. Hell, who are you kidding, you are crazy!
“Now, now I know it’s hard to read. I’m so sorry honey,” Janet said and she came around the desk and wrapped rigid arms around me. I was numb and I just sat there. “I can help you Hermione. Would you like that?” she said and I nodded. I didn’t think there was any help for me though. I was beaten. I was dead inside.
“There’s a wonderful institution, it’s high in the Alps of Switzerland. You and Draco went to school there, didn’t you?”
“I guess so,” I said as I stared down at the file on the floor. It was his handwriting alright. It just didn’t make sense. He acted as if I was making great progress. Why would he write such things about me? Oh it was true the words that were written, sort of anyway, but the way he worded it made me sound like a loon and I wasn’t, was I?
“Good, then you will be comfortable there in those surroundings.”
“Did you sleep with him? I have to know,” I asked weakly. “Did he tell you he loved you?”
“Yes of course we slept together. Often even. You have to understand that you were with Ron. Sure, he was devastated by that fact, for a while anyway, but that was four years ago sweetie. He and I were a couple. We were happy.”
“Did he say he loved you?” I asked again.
“I’m sure he did. Now, I’ve made arrangements for you. This really is the best place for you Hermione. I only want the best for you,” Janet said and then she waved her wand.
“What did you just do?” I asked impatiently. I wasn’t at all liking where things were going. Suddenly I’m being institutionalized? No, this is not right. Something is not right. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“Nonsense, it’s what you need dear.”
“Stop calling me dear. You’re lying! You just want my husband and you’re willing to ship me off to get at him.” That’s when I saw it, the file on the floor. There, written under the paragraph of shite that was written about me were the words FULL RECOVERY EXPECTED. That’s when it dawned on me. “You used invisible ink! You faked this document,” I said and I plucked it up and scanned it closer. “Draco wrote this alright, but what he wrote is not what is written here. See his real words are bleeding through! I’ll have your license for this Janet Mungo, former Healer. Perhaps I’ll even go to training and become a Healer too, it shouldn’t be that hard. Draco and I can be Healers together. How would you like that?” I said and I pointed my wand at my former Healer.
“You’re totally mad. Please don’t hurt me!” Janet screamed at the top of her lungs and then she began to rip at her own hair. I watched in horror as she punched herself in the nose and ruffled her clothing, ripping her own shirt.
“I’m the mad one am I? Look at you! You’ve gone completely insane,” I shouted back.
“Help me, please!” Janet shouted again and again.
“Shut up you crazy cow!” I shouted back. “You’re not getting my husband. Just wait until I tell Draco about this.”
“You have no idea what I’ve done to you,” she laughed in my face. “I’m the reason you lost your memory, you stupid twit. Smartest witch of her age? Ha! I have no idea why it didn’t stay gone for good though. Someone helped you, I just don’t know who. But I’ll find them out. Oh Draco is a good Healer alright. He is so good that he got the entire curse out of your stupid, bushy head! But I had a plan B. Help me, help me!”
“What did you do to me?” I launched on her and held her by the throat where I stabbed my wand into her neck.
“Totalus, now,” Janet said.
“What are you saying?” I asked, but then aIsaw a flash of light and I heard a wizard chant Petrificus Totalus.”
The security guard hit me with the spell and as I lay there, frozen like a block of wood I wanted to cry. I wanted to curse. I wanted to hex Janet’s tits off, but most of all I wanted Draco.

“Feel better after some zzz’s?” Harry asked and Draco glared at him.
“You know I’m used to doing forty-eight hour shifts at the hospital. I told you I didn’t need to rest.”
“Just say thanks Malfoy,” Harry said and Draco smirked.
“No incoming? Light day or what?” Draco said when he noticed no new patients for him to tend to.
“Oh yeah, there’s been a temporary cease fire. Both sides need to regroup. It gives us a chance to call in reinforcements, so I’m glad they called for a cease fire.”
“They called the cease fire? Hmm, interesting,” the blond said as he stirred a healing potion. They were holed up in a cave, which Draco didn’t much care for. Their voices echoed and the darkness was pitch black in parts of the cave that weren’t lit up. Potter assured him that there was only one entrance and that it was manned, but he still felt like a sitting duck in that cave.
“What’s interesting about it?” Harry asked.
“Do you care? You’re the bloody war hero, why bother with what I find interesting?”
“Well, because you were a Deatheater. We were on opposites sides. I’d sort of like to know what the mind of an enemy thinks in a war scenario.”
“Fucking wanker,” Draco spat, annoyed at being called an enemy. “I’m a wizard and a vampire bit my son. We’re on the same bloody side you idiot!”
“I’m sorry, that sort of came out wrong. I know we’re on the same side. This time. I’d still like to know what you think Malfoy.”
“I was just thinking that they called for the cease fire. That must mean that we hurt them pretty bad, so bad that they need reinforcements too. We should hit them now and hit them hard.”
“Ah yeah you might be right. We can’t though. We already accepted the cease fire.”
“And that is why I shouldn’t even be here. I should be back at home with my wife!” Draco shouted in frustration and his voice echoed through the cave. “Leave the war to the fucking war mongers like you.”
“Malfoy calm down. Hermione’s fine. Ron’s watching out for her. So far as your war tactics go, you really do fight dirty don’t you? You’re right though, we should hit them hard, but the honorable side of me says no, we can’t break the cease fire. It is what it is,” Harry said and then he tore open a letter that an owl had brought to him earlier in the day. “Oh shit! Malfoy—we have to go. Now. Ron owled. Hermione is missing.”
“What?” Draco said and his blood ran cold.

Everything was blurry when I awoke. I squinted when the bright light hit me. My lips were chapped and I tried to wipe the drool from my mouth but then I realized that I couldn’t move. My arms were restrained somehow. That’s when my vision came into view. The walls were dirty and the floor that I was sitting on was even worse. “I didn’t do anything please let me out,” I heard the voice of a man calling out and it echoed in my ears. “I have money. I can pay. Please let me out. Just let me out,” he wailed and I scooted on my butt to the sitting position. I gasped when I looked down and saw the reason that I was unable to move my arms. I was wearing a strait-jacket!
“Let me out, let me out!” I began to wail.
