Chapter 8
~~~~~
Monday morning Narcissa found a letter placed next to her plate when she came down to breakfast. Pleased when she recognized Draco’s handwriting she opened the letter and was rather excited about it’s contents.
Mother,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing because there are a few things that Harry and I would like to discuss with you. We’d like to come visit the Manor at you’re earliest convenience. Harry also suggested bringing the boys with us since they have yet to visit the Manor if you would permit. I’ll look for your owl.
D.M.
The witch penned a note back to her son before handing it to an elf to be sent by owl. As quickly as was polite, Narcissa quickly finished her breakfast and began prepping for her guests to arrive. This was the first time that Harry and the boys were coming to see her instead of the other way around and she was going to make sure it was a pleasant experience.
~~~~~
WAAAAAAAH!!
Narcissa stood shocked at the door to the parlor. She had been out tending the gardens when an elf told her that Draco and his companions had arrived. Her guests had arrived a bit early so she quickly went to get out of her gardening clothes before making her way to the parlor. When she’d arrived the room was filled with wailing. Draco and Harry stood on either side of a sobbing Ciel as he sat on the floor. The boy was covered in water with flowers and pieces of porcelain scattered on the floor. Both adults didn’t look happy in the slightest as they glared down at the boy. Teddy stood behind Draco, clinging to the man’s pant leg while he observed his younger brother.
“When I tell you not to touch I mean don’t touch it!” Harry scolded, his arms folding across his chest.
“But Daddy!!!” Ciel hung his head, big alligator tears dripping down his face.
“No buts Ciel,” Draco added, bending over to pick up a piece of the broken vase. “Honestly Ciel. If you wanted to smell the flowers you should have just asked.” Narcissa couldn’t help but giggle. She walked over to the group.
“If I remember correctly, you broke your fair share of vases when you were little Draco.”
“Mother!” Draco turned a bit surprised. He hadn’t heard the woman come into the room. “I am sorry for the vase.”
Narcissa waved the comment off, “No need to apologize. It was just a vase I picked up a while back. I never keep expensive vases out on a regular basis anyways. I learned it wasn’t very practical when you broke a vase a day Draco.” The blonde flushed at his mother’s words. Harry picked up Ciel and set the boy on his feet. Turning the boy to face Narcissa he trained stern eyes on the boy.
“What do you say young man?”
Ciel took a few steps towards Narcissa, rubbing eyes that still watered, “I’m sorry I broke the vase Grandma!!” The boy’s apology was so endearing that even if Narcissa had been upset about the vase she wouldn’t have been upset for long. She smiled gently.
“I accept you’re apology Ciel. Just please be more careful with my things.”
When Ciel nodded his head, Harry waved his hand making the broke vase, and all the water disappear. The water covering the boy also disappeared leaving the boy completely dry. Then he knelt down and started picking up the flowers. Two sets of small hands immediately started helping him. Narcissa watched Harry and the boys pick up the flowers that were scattered all over the floor. When all the flowers were picked up, Teddy took them all and walked over to Narcissa.
“Here Grandma. We picked up the flowers. They are still pretty so can we find a new pot to put them in?” The boy was too shy to look directly at the woman but he held out the flowers to her all the same. For a second all Narcissa did was look at the boy and she couldn’t deny that even she thought the boy was very sweet. It also helped that her heart strings were pulled a little when the boy called her grandma. She took the flowers from the boy.
“A pot is what we use for a living plant. These flowers are no longer alive so how about we find a vase instead? You can help me pick one out. How does that sound?” She chuckled when the boy finally looked at her with bright eyes and nodded enthusiastically. A small hand tugged on her dress, making her look down into Ciel’s emerald eyes.
“Grandma, can I come too??” The boy looked utterly dejected. It was incredibly adorable but she didn’t let on that she felt that way. She made her face look stern.
“You may come but only boys who dont break vases get to pick them out.” She glanced up right as Harry was desperately trying to hide a smile. Her eyes went back to Ciel, awaiting the boy’s answer. Ciel looked down at his shoes sadly but he nodded his head anyways.
“Yes ma’am”
The witch looked up to the two adults with a warm smile on her face. “You boys are more than welcome to join us if you’d like.”
Smiling back, Draco shook his head. “How about we meet you three in the gardens?” Upon Narcissa’s nod of approval, the blonde looked pointedly at the two boys, “I expect you two to behave and do as your grandmother asks.”
“Yes Papa” the boys said in unison.
“Alright boys. Lets get going.” Narcissa turned and lead the boys out of the parlor and down the hallway. The boys followed close behind her, their eyes wide while they walked through the halls. Everything was new and it fascinated them. It was just like Hogwarts in that moving pictures lined the halls, some of which scowling or waving down at the boys as they passed. They made a series of turns and eventually ended entering a large storage closet. Leading the boys into the closet, Narcissa pointed to the selves that held the casual every vases that she’d use around the house. “Alright Teddy. Why dont you pick one of those.”
The boy walked up to the shelf and started browsing through them. He looked through the choices for quite a few minutes. At one point, Teddy came back and requested one of the flowers they had brought with them. Flower in hand, Teddy went back to the shelf of vases and meticulously looked over flower and vase together. Narcissa couldn’t help but smile. The boy was taking his time to find which vase would look best with the flowers. It wasn’t long before Teddy pulled an elegant glass vase that was tall with a silver vine like overlay off the shelf.
“Grandma can we use this one please?”
Narcissa took the vase and looked it over thoroughly. Once thoroughly inspected, Narcissa nodded with approval..
“Yes this vase will do nicely. Here,” She handed the vase back to Teddy, “Why dont you carry it. I can trust that you won’t drop it right?” Teddy nodded vigorously, “Good. Now lets go put these flowers back in the parlor and we’ll go find you’re parents.” Every now and then Narcissa glanced over to watch Teddy and nearly laughed at the intense focus he was using to make sure he didn’t drop the vase. Really the vase was nothing special and it was incredibly cheap, or at least as cheap according to her standards but it was still heart warming to know that he was trying not to break her stuff. Certain that the boy wouldn’t drop the vase, she turned her gaze to the other boy who walked beside her. His face was downcast and he very nearly shuffled his feet. It appeared that he felt really bad about the broken vase. She didn’t want her grandson to feel bad… her youngest grandson that is. There must be something that would cheer the young boy up.
The three of them made a quick stop by the parlor so Teddy could put his charge on its stand and Narcissa placed the flowers in the vase. Once that was done they made their way out to the rear garden. It was Draco’s favorite so she wasn’t surprised when he’d suggested they meet there. When they arrived, Harry and Draco had walked down the terrace to where a very large Osmanthus Burkiiwood stood. They were still out of ear shoot but the blonde was talking very animately while Harry leaned in to take a good whiff of the flowers. It was still early April but the shrub had bloomed with small trumpet like flowers that sweetened the air around it. There were quite a few on the property as they were Draco’s favorite evergreen. Harry took a couple more whiffs of the shrub with a smile. The brunette said something that made Draco’s whole face light up as a genuine laugh erupted from his lips. It had been a very long time since she’d seen such a look on her son’s face and she tried her best to burn that look into her memory.
Upon hearing their father’s laugh, the boys left Narcissa’s side and bolted over to the adults. Narcissa stayed back on the terrace giving herself more time to view the family. Somehow her son was living a life and creating a family without her even realizing it. It upset her greatly that she hadn’t been a part of it. She wanted to be a part of her son’s life. She wanted to be someone who was included in their little family. It made her feel really lonely watching her son laugh and pick up his children and speak with the one he so openly loved.
Harry glanced towards Narcissa and he must have seen something in her face for he leaned over and said something to Draco. Her son nodded his head and grasped each child by the hand and led them a ways off to another cluster of shrubs and flowers. While Draco did that, Harry made his way towards Narcissa. When he reached the witch he stood next to her, gazing at Draco and the kids.
“Why dont you join us over there?”
The woman turned to look at Harry directly, “You haven’t exactly made my presence welcome Mr. Potter.” Harry shifted slightly, knowing that she was right.
“I’d like us to be friends Narcissa. I dont think you’re a bad person.”
“Are you certain of that? You threatened to take away my family.”
Harry locked eyes with her, keeping his expression level and calm. “You’re right. I did. Maybe I explain my reasoning to you better and maybe you would understand why I made the threat to begin with.”
Narcissa gestured toward a pair of recliners that they both took to sitting on. Once settled, Narcissa waited patiently for Harry’s explanation. There was a lot of things that Narcissa didn’t understand about the man sitting across from her so she figured that maybe it would help the two of them build a semblance of a relationship if she were to listen to what he had to say.
“I dont want to keep your family away from you Narcissa. But what you have to understand is that Teddy is part of the family. He may not be related to Draco by blood but there is nothing worse than living in a family that you dont belong to and those family members make every excuse to make sure you know. I grew up in that kind of family Narcissa and I can guarantee that it is not a good way to live. That is why when I took in Teddy I promised I wouldn’t make him feel that way. I would make him feel like he is truly my son. Then Ciel came along and ever since then I’ve raised them both as brothers. And not just as adoptive brothers but as blood brothers. That day that you and I had our,” he paused to find the proper word, “disagreement, you came in and wanted to make it clear that Teddy did not belong to your family. Am I wrong in that?”
Narcissa looked about the gardens before nodding her head.
“And that is exactly what I wont let happen. Believe me, I want them to have another grandmother in their lives. They were so excited to meet you at Christmas. But Narcissa, the two boys come as a package. It would hurt Teddy if he were to be excluded from the family that he grew up knowing. He’s a sensitive child and I will do whatever I can to ensure that my family doesn’t get hurt. You’re a proud woman Narcissa but even you wouldn’t like feeling excluded from those close to you.”
Harry remained quiet as Narcissa mulled over what Harry had said. Both adults watched Draco and the boys as they moved about the open garden looking at different plants and figurines.
“In other words, if I dont accept the boy as my own, then I will be missing out on the best years of my son’s life?” Her voice held no accusations or ill will. It was simply a question. Yet the question still made Harry flinch. It sounded so harsh to put it that way.
“When it comes down to it I suppose that’s right. But I’d much rather have you apart of the boys’ lives. And mine as well.” Steady and calculating eyes turned to Harry assessing the situation she was being put in.
“On one condition.” Harry raised an eyebrow but waited patiently for the witch to continue. “Ciel be named heir to the Malfoy line. I may not completely understand you’re way of thinking Mr. Potter but please understand. In the pureblood world it is incredibly important that a child of true blood relationships to the family be named heir. As long as Ciel is named heir then, I will treat each child as if they both belonged to the Malfoy family to begin with.”
Harry smiled warmly at the witch. “Despite everything, I really hoped that you and I could become friends. If you’re willing??” The brunette held out his hand in friendship to the woman of which she accepted willingly. After their conversation, Narcissa couldn’t help but feel like her and Harry had one very important thing in common. They both were fiercely protective of their family and loved ones. If nothing else, that was something she could agree upon with the man and admire about him. She was a bit surprised when she realized that she was by no means fearful of if her son was doing the right thing by being with the wizard.
She looked over at Harry after a comfortable silence had fallen between the two of them. “Harry, was this conversation the reason you wanted to come visit me today?”
The brunette shook his head. “No actually, I just thought I had a good opportunity so I took it. No there are other things that Draco and I must discuss with you.”
“I’m afraid I dont undestand.”
“Lets wait to discuss it until Draco is present. I think he’d really like to be a part of this conversation.” Harry commented kindly. A few moments later, Harry stood up and held out his arm to his companion. “Shall we go join them Narcissa?”
Appreciating the show of manners, Narcissa took Harry’s arm and the two walked arm in arm all the way back to where Draco had lead the boys.
~~~~~
“The boys are happily exploring the nursery. I’m surprised you keep it furnished Mother.” Draco entered the study and sat in one of the comfortable leather chairs that was placed around the fireplace. Harry and Narcissa had already taken their seats and had been having a conversation about what kinds of things children wore to a muggle daycare. His mother looked at him expectantly.
“Would you mind telling me what this is all about? Harry wouldn’t speak a word unless you’re present. So please don’t leave my waiting any longer.”
Draco glanced at Harry who was giving him the ‘Go on’ look. Taking a deep breath Draco looked at his mother. “There are couple things we want to tell you. We wanted to tell you in person because the last time we came out with a particular bit of information you weren’t pleased about finding it out from the paper.”
“Are you telling me that you two are about to do something that’ll be plastered across the papers by the morrow?”
Harry chuckled, “In a matter of speaking.”
“Actually Mother,” Draco stood up and paced the width of the fireplace trying to find the words to tell him mother.
“For goodness sake Draco just spit it out already.” Narcissa chided.
The man dug his heels into the floor and spun to look at his mother once more, “Harry’s pregnant again and according to the Ministry we’ve been married for five years.” He said it so fast that Harry wasn’t even certain the woman heard. The woman seemed to have froze in her seat.
Silence dragged on until Draco couldn’t take it any longer and he began to pace again. He didn’t like it when his mother didn’t respond to big news. It meant that things go could really good or really bad. Depended on her mood.
“Did you impregnate Harry before or after you found out you two were married?” Her question wasnt one Harry had anticipated but it made Draco freeze, turning stiffly to face the woman.
“Before.” Draco’s was soft and nervous.
“Draco!” Narcissa cried out, throwing her hand into the air.
“Its not as if we planned it!” Draco tried to counter.
“I thought I raised you better Draco Malfoy.” The witch turned to Harry her voice sincere, “I am truly sorry for my son’s manners towards you Harry. Planned or not it’s bad enough that he didn’t marry you as soon as he found out about the first child. But a second?” Her icy eyes shot daggers at her son, “A second is just bad form.”
Harry shook his head, trying to keep his laughter at bay, “Really Narcissa. It’s fine. No one would think of me as having been brought up proper so honestly, no harm done on my part. But as he said, it would seem that we are already married so there truly is no harm done.”
“Of course there is!” Narcissa looked horrified that Harry would even think that it was ok. “Malfoys don’t impregnate someone without marrying them and they certainly don’t go gallivanting around the world for years while their spouse raises children at home. The first child I let the matter go but a second? Honestly Draco.”
Draco sat down in his chair, acting as if he’d been whipped. Groaning he summoned an elf and asked for a drink. Seconds later a glass of fine brandy appeared next to him. He picked it up and took a decent swig, “I’m never going to live that down am I? It’s not like either one of us knew it was even possible to conceive between the two of us. And neither one of us new we were married to begin with.”
“Narcissa, please dont be angry at Draco. He’s right. These were circumstances that neither one of us could have guessed possible. We’re alright. Actually, before we learned of the marriage, Draco had already proposed. Unfortunately a real wedding is no longer required. So we thought we’d turn it into a vow renewal so we can go through the motions of having a wedding.”
She thought this over for a second before nodding. “Alright. But what of the marriage? How did it happen in the first place?” Narcissa got up and walked over to a wall where a large tapestry hung. She’d hung it there to hide what was underneath. Pulling it back, she revealed the Malfoy family tree. She’s hidden it because her husband’s death still hurt even all these years. She hadn’t looked at it since the death of Voldemort. But sure enough, her eyes fell to the bottom of the tree where there, attached to Draco’s image, was Harry’s and two branches grew from the two of them. One branch attached itself to Ciel’s image while the other branch was much shorter and still unfurling itself. That’s where the new child would be when it was born.
“I didn’t even think to look there.” Draco muttered, watching his mother. Harry rolled his eyes, figuring Draco was going to continue sulking.
“I’m honestly not entirely clear on the details of how. But it would seem that upon Ciel’s conception a marriage certificate was conjured via magic.”
“The soul bonding” Narcissa muttered, turning back to Harry, “I thought that was just a myth. Everyone in our world knowns that children conceived by two wizards are rare so I’m not surprised their private practices are held secret.” The woman’s face became calm and collected, resigning to their fate. “There is not much one can do about it then. Magical bonding such as yours is not something you can get out of.”
“What do you mean it’s not something we can get out of?” Harry asked, frowning in curiosity.
“There are different kinds of bonding rituals that couples can go through during a marriage ceremony” Draco interjected, “There are rituals that allow for a pair to separate later on if they aren’t certain about a particular match. However, there are also rituals that bind two together forever. Or at least until one of them dies.”
Narcissa came back and sat down in the chair she vacated moments ago. “That’s correct Draco. When two individuals go through a soul bonding then their very souls are bound. They can live apart and they can go about their lives just like anyone else. However after too long of a period apart there are said to be side effects.”
The two man exchanged a smile. “Looks like 4 years of separation isn’t long enough for those side effects to start taking effect.” Draco commented.
“It would seem not.” Narcissa interjected. “And by performing a soul bonding the souls are literally merged into one which, in males, on rare occasions results in a child. Its completely dependent on the emotions and power that the two share. Or at least that’s what is said about the kind of bonding you two have gone through.” There was a long pause as everyone kept to their own thoughts. “Well then,” Narcissa held out her hand to Harry. “Welcome to the Malfoy family Harry Potter.”
Harry smiled brilliantly, taking up the offered hand, “Thank you. I appreciate it.”
A thought dawned on the witch, making her sigh, “We will have to hold a party to officially introduce you’re new family Draco. You two should decide on whose last name to use. And before that’s done,” She hesitated for a moment but then she forged on ahead with her thought, “Draco you should see if Teddy will go through a blood adoption ceremony with you. If he is as much of the family as Ciel then you might as well make it legal. What do you say Harry?”
“I think if Teddy and Draco would like to go through with it then I’m all for it”
Draco smiled like he’d just found a piece of candy in his pocket. “I can breech the subject with him tonight.”
“Good. The sooner the better actually. It would be best if that was done before the party. Will you both leave the party planning to me? Draco really isn’t that good at party planning and Harry, I know you dont like the pureblood political stuff but it is a part of our world. You’re world now.”
Harry dragged a hand through his hair, then he nodded. “Of course Narcissa. Take the party into your hands. Better you do it than anyone else I suppose.”
The witch smiled brightly, “Perfect! Now, what on earth were you two going to be doing that made coming to see me your first priority?”
Draco smirked at Harry, who flushed a little, “We were going to go buy our wedding rings. All married couples have a ring. We should be no different.”
“Yes,” Narcissa agreed, “That would bring a lot of attention to you two. I wish you the best of luck. Don’t you dare get him anything less than what he’s worth Draco.”
The blonde looked offended, “I wouldn’t thing of it!” The exchange made Harry roll his eyes. Standing up, he brushed off his pants more to give his hands something to do.
“Narcissa we have a favor to ask of you. Draco and I were hoping to visit the jewelers just the two of us. Ciel already proved that he’d probably break every piece of jewelry in the shop. So we thought that today we’d ask if you wanted to watch the boys” Harry turned back towards the witch, his eyes smiling. “They haven’t gotten much time with you so we figured this would be a good chance for you to really get to know the boys. If you want to that is.” Watching Narcissa’s face was like watching kids open presents on Christmas morning.
“Of course the boys can stay here! But you both must stay the night when you are finished shopping. I insist. You boys can stay in Draco’s old room and I can make up a room for each of the boys.”
The two men looked at each other before Harry shrugged. Draco came over and kissed his mother on her cheek.
“That sounds like a great plan. However Mother, if you’re going to make a room for the boys, please have them share a room. They are still young. They dont need a whole entire room all to themselves, at least not a room as big as the ones we have.” Her son’s comment made her frown lightly but she nodded.
“Of course. I’ll make sure a room is prepared close to yours.”
“Very good. Now, how about you and I go find ourselves some rings?” He held out his hand in which Harry immediately placed his own. Holding hands they waved at Narcissa as they left the room, making their way outside of the boundaries protecting the Manor. Once they’ve passed the wards, they apparated to Diagon Alley.
~~~~~
Once again it didn’t take long for people to notice Harry and Draco walking down the lane. They ignored the stares and whispers as they leisurely made their way to the jewelry shop. It never ceased to amazing Harry how people still considered them a novelty even after all these months have passed. Since the boys were in capable hands, Draco and Harry did stop by Draco’s potions shop to see how things were going. With Draco spending so much time at Hogwarts, the man wasn’t able to come in and check on the shop as much as he had before. Thankfully, it was use to running without his supervision which was something Draco took pride in. McNore was still extremely pleased to see Draco and Harry and the three of them talked for quite some time about how things were going with the shop. They’d been lucky to come into the shop during a lull but when that lull ended and a rush of people started coming in, Draco and Harry said their goodbyes and continued their walk down the street to the jewelry shop.
“Welcome! We’ll be with you in just one mo-.” The shop attendant who spoke to them went silent when their eyes fell upon the couple. The attendant hurried to the back and a moment later they came back with a woman trailing behind them. She caught sight of Draco and Harry and smiled brightly, bustling over to them.
“Mr. Malfoy! Mr. Potter! Welcome. We are honored to have both of you in today.”
“Good afternoon Madame Prikwillow” Draco smiled lightly.
“How can we be of service to you today gentlemen?” The woman smiled in such a way that made Harry think of a cat getting ready to pounce on a bird. But Draco had insisted that they would be able to find something that they would like and at a decent price at this place so Harry didn’t have any real reason protest coming here. So he stood back and allowed Draco to do all the talking.
Draco glanced around the shop, noticing how everyone was still looking at them. The blonde stood up as straight as he could, making himself look the part of a Malfoy.
“We would like to see your selection of rings.” If the shop hadn’t gone quiet upon their arrival it would have at that moment. But Madame Prikwillow didn’t even bat an eyelash. She gestured towards a door that lead to the back.
“If you gentlemen would follow me. I’d be happy to show you what we have in stock.” Prikwillow lead Harry and Draco into the back where there was another room. This room was lined with display cases and various magnifying glasses and display pillows and mirrors. Clearly this room was used for VIP sales. Draco immediately sat down in one of the chairs at the red cedar table that sat in the center. Harry followed Draco’s lead while Prikwillow sat on the opposite side of the table from the wizards.
“Now, you two are looking for rings. What kind of rings are you looking for?”
Draco took a moment to contemplate. “We are looking for rings suitable to be used as wedding rings.” The woman’s calm and eager demeanor twitched with surprise.
“I beg your pardon, but are these wedding rings for yourself and Mr. Potter?” Although her face gave away her surprise, her voice stayed chipper.
“But of course.” The blonde raised an eyebrow. Prikwillow stood up and started bustling around the room, using her wand to unlock display cases and other compartments so she could pull our a variety of ring pallets. Some pallets held more than a dozen rings while some held only one. When she had gathered all the rings that she thought might work, she finally sat down with a satisfied smile.
“These are the best rings that we have. There is bound to be something here that will strike your face. If you gentlemen will excuse me, I’ll leave you alone to make your choice.” She inclined her head towards them before walking out of the room, giving them a bit of privacy.
“Why dont we just go to the Prophet and give them some personal statements?” Harry asked, crossing his arms and lightly tapping his fingers against his opposite arm. Instead of an immediate answer, Draco leaned over and planted a dainty kiss on the man’s lips.
“Come on Harry. They were gonna gossip about it anyways. Might as well give them something to work off of right? Besides, aren’t you curious about what is going to be on the front page tomorrow morning?” Harry’s rolled his eyes as his only response but there was a small smirk tugging at the side of his mouth. Draco chuckled and moved to the edge of his seat, “Come on Harry. Lets take a look. See if there is one that you like.”
Following suit and sitting on the edge of his seat, Harry learned forward and started perusing the selection in front of him. Every single ring on display was beautiful and extravagant. Some had huge stones on them some had small. Some rings were solid metal while some had beautiful filigree designs all over the band. There were many different kinds of stones and gems in a multitude of colors. Diamonds, Benitoite, Alexandrite, Jadeite, Musgravite and Black Opals were among the options. Draco and Harry spent the next hour discussing different rings. When they tried each ring on, they either complimented on how it looked on the other or they completely trashed it. It almost became a game between the two. Every now and then Madame Prikwillow popped her head in to see how they were doing.
“Madame Prikwillow!” Draco called raising his voice only what was socially acceptable. Seconds later she whisked into the room.
“Did you gentleman find something that you liked??”
Harry nodded. “Yes I do believe we have.”
“Splendid. Which pieces have you fine wizards chosen?”
Draco picked up a ring made of mostly black platinum. Black platinum made an outer frame while two strands of the black platinum created a waving pattern, the two strands touching one side of the frame before curving to touch the other side. And around those strands was another piece of platinum but this piece of silvery in color. This piece wrapped around both strands touching the side of the black frame opposite of the two black strands. It made Harry think of a silver snake wrapping itself around two black ones. On the top there was a small Jadeite stone mounted into the metal.
At the same time, Harry picked up a ring that was also made out of platinum. All around the band there was beautifully designed vine-like filigree with a black opal mounted to the top. The black opal was a beautiful dark color with blues and greens flashing in a rolling mackerel pattern all throughout the stone. Harry found the band beautiful but what really sold him was the stone. The two pieces together made him want to look at it every day for the rest of his life. Madame Prikwillow looked over their choices and nodded approvingly.
“These are very fine pieces Mr. Potter and Mr. Malfoy. You both have a good eye. Shall I take these and wrap them up for you?”
“No thank you. We will wear them as soon as you can resize them Madame.”
“But sir,” Madame Prikwillow started in confusion, “Would it be more prudent to wait until the wedding day?”
Harry smiled kindly at the woman, “Actually, we are already married. We were just missing the rings.”
“You are already married!? So soon?” Madame Prikwillow’s composed face completely crumbled in bewilderment.
Draco only smiled and held his ring out to her. “If we could have these resized.” His comment made Harry smile. Of course now the man would avoid the subject of their marriage. Not for the first time, Harry concluded that Draco just liked jerking people around. The man could probably make a sport out of it. Flustered, the woman took out her wand and pointed it at the ring in Draco’s hand. She muttered a spell that would resize the piece of jewelry to whatever size the holder preferred. Draco’s ring shrunk slightly before finding a size to hold to. She then pointed her wand to the ring that Harry held and within seconds his ring expanded a size or two. Harry was just about to put his ring on when Draco stopped him.
“I beg your pardon!” The blonde exclaimed, “I believe that ring is for me to put on your finger!” He gently plucked the ring out of Harry’s hand and took hold of Harry’s left hand. The opal ring in hand, Draco slipped it onto Harry’s ring finger then took a moment to admire the adorned finger. However it didn’t last long as Harry pulled his hand away and took Draco’s own ring. Harry placed the ring on the blonde’s own left hand before smiling brightly at Draco. The two exchanged only a moment before Draco stood and faced the woman. “In terms of payment, send the bill to my company and they will take care of it.”
Madame Prikwillow’s cheeks had flushed at the exchange. She felt like she had witnessed something incredibly special even if it was quick. Unable to speak, she nodded her head. Quickly composing herself, she bowed towards the two men.
“Of course Mister Malfoy. I thank you for using us for such an occasion. We hope you will come seek us out again if you require anymore services.”
“Thank you Madame.” Draco stood and slightly inclined his head. Harry followed suit. They bid their farewells and exited the shop. They were starting to make their way to the apparation platform when Harry tugged on Draco’s sleeve.
“Draco.”
“What is it?” The blonde stopped to look at Harry.
“Why dont we stop in at Gringotts. The more I think about this, the more curious I am as to why we didn’t get notified about any changes to our vaults. Aren’t vaults usually shared once two people are married? Why weren’t ours touched?”
The two made their way into Gringotts where they spoke privately with the goblins.

As soon as Draco and Harry walked into Gringotts, two goblins greeted them and lead them into a private room without the two wizards even uttering a word. Harry didn’t quite feel comfortable with that but when Draco showed no sign of unease Harry decided to just keep his mouth shut and see what happens. They were left alone for no more than a moment or two before another goblin came into the room.
“We were wondering when the two of you would be coming in.” The goblin sat down in a chair across from the pair. He had a few files in the hand that he set on a coffee table that sat between the two.
“Then you know about our marriage.” Harry commented, his right hand twisting the ring on his left finger.
“Of course Mr. Potter. We knew of your marriage the moment the bond was complete.”
“Then why werent our vaults combined?” Draco asked, folding his hands in his lap calmly.
“You’re marriage was an accident. Others might not notice but here at Gringotts, we goblins know when contracts are formed intentionally and incidentally. As yours was incidental we goblins dont touch your vaults until otherwise told to by said party. I assume that you would like you’re vaults to be merged into one?” The goblin looked at the wizards, waiting patiently for their decisions.
Harry looked over at Draco, feeling a little overwhelmed. They hadn’t come in to merge vaults at all. They just wanted to figure out why nothing had been done with them in the first place. So to suddenly make a decision like that had caught the brunette off guard.
“What will happen to the vaults if they are tied to a family line? Like the Malfoy heir would eventually get everything tied to the vaults and estates and anything else with it. Whereas I have the two vaults for the Black and Potter lines. What will happen if we merge those and we plan to name an heir to each line?” Harry asked curiously.
“Harry we should keep our vaults separate. We wont be able to separate them once we merge them. More precisely we won’t be able to split the vaults and make sure their proper contents are restored if we merge and then separate them later on.” Draco answered, he’d been sitting back contemplating their situation while Harry talked with goblin. “By keeping them separate we can make sure each of our children is named heir to each line and they can do as they wish once they come of age.”
The goblin nodded his head, “He is right. If you plan to place an heir to each family vault then it would be wise to keep them separate. You can always merge vaults later if you wish. Something we can do is link the vaults together. As you are married we are able to connect each wizard to each other’s vaults in the case that access to one of your vaults is needed by the other.” To this suggestion, Draco nodded.
“Yes. Lets link vaults.” Silver eyes shifted over to Harry, “At least, link Harry to the Malfoy vaults. I, Draco Lucius Malfoy, hereby grant Harry James Potter full access to my vaults and any subsequent vaults that are or will ever be attached to the main vault.” As Draco made his declaration, a piece of parchment appeared along with a quill. His declaration was copied down on this piece of parchment and once finished it floated down to the table in front of them. As soon as it was settled, Draco leaned forward and picked up the pen, signing his full name at the bottom. When this was completed the parchment floated over to the goblin. He took it and pressed his finger to the space next to Draco’s signature. Upon lifting his finger, the official seal of Gringotts took it’s place.
“Draco. Are you sure about this?” Harry asked, alarmed. “You just gave me access to plunder all that you have!” He felt butterflies in his stomach at the sudden change. This was happening too fast. Yes he agreed that they were married, they had a marriage certificate to prove it. But at the same time, their relationship truly only began seven months ago and all of a sudden Draco wants to allow him complete access to his family vaults? He must have had a look in his eye for Draco turned to the goblin, his voice low and serious.
“We’d like a few minutes.”
The goblin stood and bowed, “Of course sirs. I will go file this statement in the mean time. Just call when you are ready to proceed.” He took Draco’s document and left the two wizards to their privacy. Left alone, Draco turned to Harry, his jaw set, shoulders squared and his hands were steady as he picked up Harry’s left hand.
“You couldn’t plunder my vaults even if you wanted to. And even that, I trust that you wouldn’t do so. If our marriage is to be real then that means that I share all that I have with you. I’ve shared my vary soul with you, twice even” The blonde reached and with his free hand brushed his fingers against Harry’s abdomen.
“But this is so sudden Draco.” Harry’s own free hand lifted to hold Draco’s hand on his stomach. “I’m sorry I know we’re married but please. I need a moment to catch up. Up until a few days ago I was under the impression that we were just dating, and only planning on getting married. Now all of a sudden we are already married and proclaiming it to the world.” Draco remained silent, watching as Harry closed his eyes. He could feel the brunette’s hands tense, particularly the hand holding his own over the baby.
When Draco felt like he had stayed silent long enough, Draco leaned forward and placed feather light kisses upon the other’s. He continued to do so until he coaxed Harry to partake in the kiss. The kiss was gentle and delicate, lips melding together to dissipate every anxious thought Harry was thinking. All the brunette’s bunched muscles relaxed, his thoughts turned from his fear to the reason why they were here in the first place. Feeling the man calm down a bit, Draco pulled away with one last peck on the lips.
“Think of it this way. Up until now all we’ve really been doing is playing house so to speak. Now we are just turning it into reality. You’re my husband. You’ve carried and have been raising my children. By giving you access to all of my possessions I’m finalizing my claim on my family.”
“Mm. Say it again?”
Draco frowned lightly, “Which part?”
“Call me your husband.”
The blonde couldn’t help but snicker, “That’s such a girly request.”
“Shut up! Just say it!” Harry exclaimed, letting go of Draco’s hand to lightly punch the other man in the arm.
He couldn’t help but chuckle, giving in to the brunette’s request. “You,” He stood up, moving to stand in front of Harry’s chair. Leaning over, Draco caged Harry in with his arms resting on either armrest, “Harry James Potter, are my husband.” He leaned over even further and firmly pressed his lips to Harry’s. Their tongues battled for only a brief time before Draco pulled back. “If it helps at all, I’m not expecting you to give me complete access to your vaults. You can just have access to mine if your uncomfortable.”
Once again Harry lightly punched Draco, this time in the ribs. Draco grunted and rubbed the spot where he was hit. “You bloody bastard! Who do you think I am!?” Harry growled, “Do you really believe I’d agree to that? If I were, I would be a complete ass!” The defiance flashing in those emerald eyes caused a tendril of heat to coil in the pit of Draco’s stomach. He loved it when Harry looked like that.
“So,” The blonde’s voice was smooth and teasing, “What are you gonna do then?”
Glaring softly, Harry pushed Draco back and stood, making his way to the door. When he came back he was followed by the goblin that they had previously been talking to. Once everyone was seated, Harry sat up straight, squaring his shoulders.
“I, Harry James Potter, hereby grant Draco Lucius Malfoy full access to my vaults and any subsequent vaults that are or will ever be attached to any of my main vaults.” As it did before, a piece of parchment and a quill appeared while Harry made his declaration and copied his words down. It also landed in front of Harry as it did with Draco so that the man could sign it before floating over for the goblin to place the Gringotts seal on it. The goblin inclined his head once the seal was placed.
“Very good sirs. We will make the necessary changes. Is there anything else that you wish us to arrange for you while you’re here??” Both men shook their heads.
“No. That will be all.” Draco responded as the two wizards got ready to leave.
“As you wish sirs. Pardon me but I’ll leave you to see your own way out. I must see to make sure the changes to your vaults are made properly.” Without another word, the goblin left Harry and Draco to make their own way out of the bank.
They were walking out the door when Draco caught Harry’s hand, linking their fingers together. “Now that wasn’t so bad was it?”
Fingers tightened in Draco’s hands while at the same time mild irritation flickered in those beautiful green eyes. “You’re a slimey git ya know that?” The question made Draco laugh loud enough that it caught people’s attention.
“But you love me none the less.” Normally Draco kept a good handle of just how happy he looked with the two of them were out in public. People were used to seeing him as cold, emotionless ex-death eater. That wasn’t to say he didn’t show happiness but he didn’t like showing just how happy he was in front of large crowds. But at this moment he had no chance of hiding the genuine joy he felt radiating throughout his body. And that happiness was infectious. Harry had been determined to hold onto his exasperation towards Draco a little longer but seeing how happy Draco was made that impossible. A smile to match the blonde’s broke through Harry’s scowl. The happiness that was radiating off the blonde pulled a small chuckle from Harry.
“Yeah. I love you. Come on,” he pulled on Draco’s arm, “Lets head back to your mother’s. I’m sure the boys are driving your mother crazy by now.”
“Oh it’s good for her. But you’re right. We’d better stop by Hogwarts though. We left Maka there and she wont be very pleased if she is left there all night.” Walking hand in hand the two wizards walked to the Apparation point where they would travel back to Hogwarts to pick up Harry’s companion before returning to Malfoy Manor.
~~~~~
The playroom was incredible to their little eyes. It was full of magical toys that flew, made sounds and some even lit up. These are all things that muggle toys did in their own way but these toys were much flashier in what they did. Teddy and Ciel spent hours playing in that room, exploring and trying out all the toys they could get their hands on.
“Teddy, Ciel” The boys stopped playing to look at their grandmother as she walked into the room. She came over and sat in a chair near where the boys were playing. “You boys have been playing by yourselves for quite a while. Why don't we go to the library and we can read a book together?” Upon mentioning a book, the boys smiled brightly and nodded their heads.
Narcissa chuckled lightly, seeing the boys so excited lifted her heart. Ciel ran over and grabbed her hand ready to go. Teddy also stood up but instead of walking over to Narcissa he began walking around the room picking up toys as he went.
“Teddy,” Narcissa lightly called as her and Ciel walked towards the door, “What are you doing?”
The boy finished pick up an armful of toys before turning back to the woman, “I’m cleaning up. Daddy doesn’t like it when we dont put our toys away.” A tiny flush tinted his cheeks, “And Daddy said we need to behave if we want to come back to see Grandma. Ciel,” the boy frowned at his younger brother, “You need to help too. Or I’m gonna tell Daddy.” Ciel pouted in such a way that reminded Narcissa of Draco when he was young. Yet she was pleasantly surprised when the boy did as his older brother asked, letting go of her hand began helping the other boy pick up the room. Narcissa’s first thought was to tell the boys that the elves would pick up after them but with the determination in Teddy’s eyes as he picked up she didn’t have the heart to say so. It was clear that this behavior was expected at home and for once she wasn’t going to interfere with it. If they were ill mannered children then maybe she would be more apt to interfere but for children not brought up in a high bred society they were remarkably well behaved. When the boys were done cleaning up the room, they walked over to their grandma and took her hand.
“We’re done picking up Grandma!” Teddy stated proudly.
“Thank you boys. It pleases me greatly that you would clean up after yourselves.” Narcissa stood up and held out a hand to each child. “Lets go pick out a book to read for a time.” Hand in hand, the three of them made their way down to the library where Narcissa led them to a tiny bookshelf that was stuffed into a corner. It was a bookshelf that Narcissa usually kept behind an invisibility charm for on this bookshelf held only children’s books. But as there were children in the house, she had taken the charm down so they could come to this shelf and pick out a book for themselves should they ever choose to come read on their own. They stopped in front of this bookshelf where she let their hands go.
“You boys pick one book for us to read.” She took a step back and watched the boys look over the books and every now and then bicker over which book that she was to read. She hid a smile when she heard some bartering going on between them. Only a few minutes passed before they came to an agreement and they presented their choice to Narcissa. It was an old book that was clearly worn around the edge. The cover of the book had a broomstick that the illustrator had drawn eyes and a mouth on and the broom flew around the cover chattering on silently. A little pang of nostalgia struck her heart as she gazed upon the book. It had been one of Draco’s favorites. Taking the book in her hands, she guided Ciel and Teddy over to a large couch. They settled themselves with Narcissa in between. Once there Narcissa began reading the book to the boys.
Over the course of two hours Narcissa and the boys sat on the couch in the library reading books. When one story was complete the boys agreed to take turns finding a different story for their grandma to read. It surprised Narcissa how much the two liked to read books. Even though she hadn’t spent much time with them before, she had at least pegged Ciel as an active one, constantly moving around. But he was just as enthralled with the stories as Teddy was. They choose different stories from adventure to fantasy to mystery and there were even a few history picture books picked out. Narcissa was reading them a book about the magical creatures that live in the world when a tiny finger pointed towards a creature.
“Grandma. This looks like a,” The space between Teddy’s eyebrows crinkled as the boy tried to think of the word he was wanting, “A highpogrin?” The attempt at the word made Narcissa grin.
“The word you are looking for is Hippogriff.”
“Papa made one mad once!” Ciel chimed in cheerfully.
“Daddy said he got to pet it!” Teddy added excitedly, “I wanna pet a hippogriff!”
“I dont know about that. You have to treat creatures like that in a certain way otherwise you’ll end up like your Papa and make them mad.”
Teddy pointed to Ciel, “He would make them mad. He made the unicorns mad”
The small blonde’s cheeks flushed, his eyes narrowing at his brother, “I wanted to pet them too! You weren’t sharing.” And a bickering match ensued between the two boys.
“Boys! Boys” Narcissa chided lightly, “Dont fight.” Immediately the boys became quiet although there were little daggers being glared in each other’s direction. The woman glanced at the clock, only slightly surprised that it was already close to 5pm. As she looked at the clock something moved in her peripheral vision. She turned to see what it was and nearly jumped out of her skin, a soft cry left her lips. Foregoing their glaring match, the boys turned to see what their grandmother was looking at and instead of crying out in fear they cried out with excitement, bounding off the couch and over towards the door.
“Boys! Get away from that!” Narcissa cried trying to grasp them as they ran away.
“Dont be scared Grandma!” Ciel squealed, stopping and reaching down to pet the beautiful snake that slithered on the floor. A soft hiss filled the room as the snake flicked it’s tongue out at Ciel. What really surprised the woman was when Ciel opened his mouth and a language that she, quite honestly, never wanted to hear again came out of his mouth. A small hand tugged on her own, making her look down.
Teddy’s sweet innocent face smiled brightly up at her, “Grandma come on. That’s Maka. She lives with us,” he moved forward, dragging the woman behind him, “Come meet her. She’s really nice most of the time.” Narcissa allowed herself to be dragged until she was mere feet away from the snake before Teddy let her go and bend down so he could pet the snake too. The snake allowed the boys to pet her for a few moments but then she’d had enough. Her tongue flicked in and out as the snake gazed at the older woman. Their eyes connected and they gazed at each other before footsteps made the snake look away and slither back towards the door.
“Maka. Stop scaring people” Harry chided softly, walking through the door. Maka slithered and coiled herself right before Harry, her head raised and tongue flicking in the air. That soft hiss could be heard throughout the room again. Ciel giggled as he once again started speaking Parseltongue. Emerald eyes flicked up to Narcissa and Harry drug his hand through his hair. “Ciel. Speaking Parseltongue in front of others isn’t very nice.” The boy slapped a hand over his mouth with wide eyes.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered, “I didn’t notice.”
Harry chuckled, moving forward to pat the boy on the head. “It’s ok. Just please pay attention.” Draco who had been standing behind Harry walked around and over to his mother.
“A little warning would have been appreciated Draco,” Narcissa scolded.
The man smirked, “Amazing isn’t it? I was surprised too when I heard him suddenly talking like that.”
It made Narcissa a little nervous about hearing such language spoken in her house once more but her unease came from memories now long passed. She also knew better than to lump her current company in with that of those from the past. When Narcissa and Draco turned back to the rest of the group, they watched as Maka turned away from the conversation and made her way over to Draco. She was hissing up a storm and when she reached the blonde, she reared up and started curling herself around his leg. Harry laughed and waved off the snake.
“What is she saying Harry?” Draco asked, bending over so he could unwrap the snake and pick her up properly.
Harry chuckled, “She’s feeling indignant. Having been left alone all day and not having been told we were leaving. She believes you owe her a good dinner.”
“Why do I owe you a good dinner?” Draco asked the snake who was now coiled around his arm. The snake hissed furiously.
“She says that since this is your main nest that it’s your fault we left without her.”
“It’s not my responsibility to tell you these things. That belongs to the ones who speak snake” Draco argued. Sighing heavily, he looked over to his mother, “You wouldn’t happen to let fat rodents run around in the garden would you?”
Narcissa frowned, “I normally keep a clean garden but there might be one or two out there for her to eat if she wants them.”
Looking back to the serpent, “I can’t do much more for you than that. Go search the gardens and see if you can find something.” Maka hissed some more but she lowered herself to the floor and slithered out of the room.
“Dont get lost Maka! And dont terrorize anything other than your dinner.” Harry called out as she left. He chuckled when there seemed to be a sharp hiss in response. Turning away from the retreating serpent, Harry turned his attention to the boys who were trying to tell him all about what they had been reading with Narcissa.
“How was the shopping you?” Narcissa asked Draco.
Her son smiled brightly, “It went very well. We found rings that we liked. While we were there we stopped by Gringotts and made arrangements for our family vaults that we believe will be helpful in the future.”
“Let me see.” She held out her hand which Draco promptly held out his hand for her to inspect the ring that he purchased. Inspecting the ring thoroughly, Narcissa eventually nodded her approval.
“This is a gorgeous ring Draco. I hope you got Harry one that is just as elegant.”
“Of course he did.” Harry interjected as he walked the few feet over to join them. He held out his hand so the woman could look at his ring like she had looked at Draco’s. Upon her approval, he took back his hand and the three adults found seats on the couches. The boys immediately went to their bookshelf and started looking through the books. They eventually found a few picture books that they pulled out onto the floor where they laid on the floor and started flipping through them. While they did that the adults talked about the men’s trip to Diagon Alley. They began discussing various details involved with the coming out party as Narcissa liked to call it. They also discussed topics of Harry and Draco’s vow renewal/wedding. They didn’t get into too much detail because the two hadn’t even talked much amongst themselves about it yet. When an elf came to announce that dinner was being served, the whole family ate dinner in the dinning room. Afterwards the boys went back to playing in the playroom while Draco, Narcissa and Harry went about doing their own things. Harry went to the library to read some, Draco went to the potions lab to work on some potions that took a short time to brew while Narcissa went to her small study to write some letters to various friends of hers.
When Draco finished his brewing for the day and bottled the contents, he went in search of Harry. He was about to enter the library when he found his mother leaning against the entryway looking in. Walking up behind her he peered into the room and smiled lightly. Harry was sitting on a couch completely engrossed in the book in his hands. On either side of him were Teddy and Ciel. Ciel was completely passed out against Harry’s thigh with a picture book in his hand while Teddy sat on the other side of Harry also looking at a picture book. It was a very adorable picture that they made.
“I know I haven’t exactly been the most supportive of this match to you Draco, but I have to admit that you could do no better than those three.” Narcissa kept her voice low so as not to disturb the trio.
Draco wrapped an arm casually around Narcissa’s waist, “You’re right. I dont even want to think what my life would be like without them now that they are here.”
Sharp eyes glanced over to the blonde, “You do good by them Draco. Dont make the same kind of mistakes that your father made. He was a good man but he made some wrong choices in his life that led him down a very dark road.”
The man’s jaw tightened, “I know. I loved father but I will learn from his mistakes and treat my family with love and kindness that he rarely showed us”
Narcissa smiled lightly, “It’s not that your father didn’t love us. He just didn’t know how to show us properly. He did the best he could, even if it was hard to recognize.” She slipped her arms around Draco’s waist like he’d done with her and rested her head against his shoulder, “This will be good to have them in the family. Those two boys are truly wonderful Draco. Harry has done quite the job raising them to be respectful and caring and decent human beings.”
“I just hope that this new child will be raised just as well.” There was a slight change in tone that brought Narcissa’s head up and her knowing eyes searched Draco’s face.
“Come Draco.” She took her son’s hand and lead him away from the library and into a small parlor that she reserved for her closest friends and family. When they settled onto the couch, Narcissa pinned her son with a knowing look. “Talk to me. What is going through that head of yours?”
Draco leaned back in his seat with a soft sigh. “It’s nothing mother. It’s just,” the man paused to collect his thoughts, “You said it yourself. Harry has done quite a wonderful job at raising those two boys. Sometimes I wonder if this newest child will benefit from having me around so early in it’s life.”
“How do you feel about yourself raising the two you already have?”
Blonde eyebrows furrowed, “I dont understand.”
Narcissa smiled, “Do you feel like you’re failing Ciel and Teddy now as their father?”
“Of course not!” Draco declared.
“Then what are you truly afraid of Draco?” Silence filled the room but the woman did not let up from pinning her son to his seat with her sharp eyes. He was squirrelly about something and she had a feeling that it wasn’t as big of a problem as he was making it out to be.
“It’s a baby.” As soon as the words left his mouth, Narcissa barely contained the laughter that bubbled up inside her. Particularly when the look on her son’s face looked as if he was about to step into a giant vat of muck.
“Ah! So that’s what has you so nervous. What makes raising a baby so different from raising two young boys?”
Draco rolled his eyes at his mother, “Please. You know the difference. Those boys were already grown up enough to interact with respectable people. I’ve never even held a baby before and now I’m supposed to just up and learn how to raise one?”
“Harry had to.” The man glared at his mother. He was genuinely concerned about this exciting event in his life and his mother was making him feel bad for worrying over taking care of a baby. That didn’t seem fair somehow. Seeing the look, Narcissa rolled her eyes, “Come now Draco. Dont give me that look. You will have to learn how to deal with new situations as you go along. Needless to say, I’m surprised I have to tell you that. You’ve already been a parent to those two boys so you know already that this process doesn’t come with a hand book. Trust your husband. He’s done this part before and he can help guide you through what to do. Believe me, you’ll enjoy this part of their life. There is nothing like holding your infant child in your arms.” She smiled warmly at her son, watching as the concern that clouded his eyes began to dissipate. When he seemed to relax some, she pulled out her wand and accioed a piece of parchment, “Now that we are done with that subject, I want to go over some of the details of the party with you.”
