Something had shifted between Hermione and him. Harry watched from the roof top of the mall the dreary clouds and the rabid stillness.
The world was ending. Or was about to. Or perhaps even had. What about them?
Harry mused.
What was the world going to be like for the ones who still had to live? Would wizard kind be able to survive this… The turbulent skies fought the sun.
The End Of The World? Harry sighed and let his green eyes look up. Dumbledore was gone.
Snape had seen to that. Harry grimaced bitterly, Perhaps he had been too confident. Too childish to assume that Dumbledore was always going to be around.
Was it even possible for The Savior Of The Wizarding World to save it? The task seemed impossible to contemplate.
Harry Potter grit his teeth and forced himself to smile. At the very least he could do. He decided, He wasn’t going to give up. Contrary to what people thought, He wasn’t a total fool. Only when one did the unfair act of comparing him to the brightest witch of his year if not age. For all her booksmarts and natural talent with magic.
Hermione had still done some rather foolish stunts. Such as challenging Umbridge in her own classroom on the first day when they all knew the ministry was going to interfere
If the muggles couldn’t stop these true inferi with all their numbers and horrifying brute force.
Then at the very least, Wizardkind was going to have to succeed by another way. Harry kicked a rock as he tried to reason through the sheer impossibility of it all.
Despair, Was not helpful. He decided, because in the end he was at least going to try. When it came down to it. It didn’t matter because he was going to make it matter.
The ever-present moans of the dead never ceased. It could almost be considered background noise. He stepped into the stairway.
“Expecto Patronum!” Harry flourished with his wand and with a joyful smile and a flair of of illuminating silver luminescence.
His patronus took shape, Regal, resplendent in its shining shimmer. Harry couldn’t help but feel the strange heaviness on him lift in the presence of his guardian.
It wasn’t natural. Was this the magic of these inferi?
Despair? He wondered for a moment before he let the thought go and focused on his spell. The stag this time had no time for games.
Its ears fluttered and it kept glancing about. It made Harry distinctly uneasy. Something, Somewhere was wrong.
Harry hurried down the stairs as his Patronus picked up speed. A store was unlit and its door ajar.
Harry walked towards it only for his patronus to block his way. There was nothing playful in its gaze but a look of well earned caution. Harry reluctantly let his patronus dissipate.
Something was truly wrong in the store. “Harry?” Hermione rushed towards him Argus trailing behind her.
“Harry!”
“Henry wasn’t at breakfast this morning.”
Harry nodded with his wand extended warily. “Stay here. Lumos” His wandtip shining pierced the seemingly hostile dark.
There was a figure swinging in the center of the store where a great fan had been. The light issuing from his wand revealed the corpse almost immediately.
He had found Henry alright. His stomach roiled and Harry thought he was going to be sick.
A noose made from bedsheets about his neck and the room stank of urine and shit.
Harry didn’t know if he was ready to deal with this. He needed an adult.
It was a horrid realization that Harry had been seemingly promoted to adulthood.
“Diffindo” It was the least he could do to cut him down and the body hit the floor with a wet thud. He waved his wand and the towels off a rack flew and wrapped the body.
“Incarcerous!” Rope appeared and bound the body. Harry mumbled the levitation charm and the figure hidden by towels drifted after him.
Harry felt numb and he distantly heard hermione scream as he hurried the grisly find towards the roof.
He didn’t mind the silence as he found a suitable place for the body. It wasn’t hard to find a perfect place. Far from everything.
He let the toweled thing drop. He couldn’t just leave it here, Just in case the body decided to join the restless dead.
He was the leader.
The responsibility was his and he heard the restless cries of the dead below.
“Incendio Maxima!” Harry whispered firmly and with a crescendo of crackling and blackening heat an impressive bonfire erupted and with unnatural swiftness consumed the body. For a single moment the body lurched almost as if alive just was the incredible heat reduced it to charred bones. As the skeleton flutily reached out to in vain towards him.
The fire vanished just as a breeze blew in and the ashes blew away with it.
Being an adult sucked. Being an adult in charge of others…
That sucked so much more.
Harry turned to see Hermione gagging and almost slipping on her vomit.
“No one sleeps alone.” Harry ordered softly.
