*In Hermione's Subconscious mind, Still Asleep*
Draco and Hermione sat in big cushioned chairs facing each other. The room was dark except for a fireplace that illuminated both chairs, the wood floor beneath them, and a small wooden table in between the chairs. The walls weren't lit up enough to determine a color, and the rest of the room around them was dark. However both Hermione and Draco felt completely tranquil and safe.
"Do you know where we are?" Hermione asked, trying desperately to see in the dark
"I think we're in your head Hermione" Draco replied nonchalantly, reclining in his chair.
"I don't remember coming here" Hermione said
"Well it sure is cozy in here"
Hermione nodded. In this weird dream like state, the conversation that they were having made sense. It seemed completely normal, despite the fact that if they were in the real world it wouldn't have made any sense. Hermione rested her chin on her hand. Draco looked at her, she looked back.
"We should probably get going to the outside world" Hermione said, eyes never leaving Draco
"I am pretty comfortable where I am actually" Draco's eyes were locked with hers. It was the first time that Hermione felt completely comfortable looking into Draco's eyes. They were usually so icy and empty, but here the fire lit them up. They seemed warm, inviting.
"I'm comfortable here too, but you're not real. And that means that I'm alone"
"That's not necessarily true. I am as real as you want me to be. Do you want me to leave?"
"You know of an exit."
"No, but you do" Draco's face was completely expressionless "You told me about one"
"I don't rememeber" Hermione pressed her fingers into her temples. She couldn't remember anything. She knew there was an outside world, but couldn't for the life of her remember what it consisted of. She didn't even know how she got to the room she was in now.
"Why don't I remember?" Hermione asked
"Maybe it's because your mind wants you to stay here, wants us to stay here" Draco reached for Hermione's hand and grasped it. It felt warm in hers, and she relaxed a little. That touch felt so real, so perfect.
"What will happen if I stay here?"
"You get to live a life of bliss" Draco replied
"How long to I have to decide... you know if I want to stay here or not?"
Draco smiled warmly at her "Until the fire goes out"
"But then we'll be in total darkness"
"That isn't true" Draco stroked Hermione's face gently "Once that fire goes out, we will be surrounded in light"
*Draco's Office, in the real world*
Draco woke with a start. He gasped and sputtered for air, He felt weak and like if he tried to move he might collapse again. But his mind was stronger than his body and he forced himself to crawl over to Hermione. She wasn't moving. Draco's heart started racing and he reached out to touch her. She was as cold as ice. He quickly reached for her neck and desperately starting feeling for a pulse. He breathed out a sigh of relief when he felt the tiny throbbing sensation coming from Hermione's neck. Then he placed his head on her chest, listening for a heartbeat. It was faint, but there was a tiny beating within Hermione's chest.
"Hermione?" He croaked, but no response. Then as if a cloak was lifted from his eyes, he saw why Hermione wasn't waking up. She was battered. Her left eye was swollen to twice it's size, there was blooding trickling from her nose, her cheeks were bruised and so was her neck. But that was just the very top of her body. Her stomach wasn't too badly hurt, nor were her breasts, but upon Draco turning her over, her back was covered in blood. It was bright red, except for blackened spots of severe brusing. there were cuts from the neck to the tailbone that were stilling bleeding. She looked like someone had thrown her into a pit of barbed wire, back first.
Tears formed in Draco's eyes and started to pour down his face. He had done this to her. His chin wrinkled and he coughed for breath, crying hard. Now he knew for certain it wasn't the pot of amortencia that had made him feel anything toward Hermione, he loved her of his own accord. And he had beaten her, almost to death.
In his raspy, weak voice, the blond wizard called for his owl. He forced his voice into a yell until the little white ball of feathers appeared in front of him.
"Get... Help" He said "Go!". The owl took off, Draco didn't know if that damned thing could even get help, but he couldn't move, and even if he could he wasn't sure if he wanted to leave Hermione alone like this. If she was about to die, he wanted to be with her and savor every last breath she took.
His own body had taken a beating as well, and as he waited for help, Draco assessed his damage. His nose had dried blood around it, and he had busted his lip. Upon further inspection that seemed to be the only visible damage he had, at least on the outside, but his insides felt like they had been put in a blender. His chest hurt and his throat burned every time he swallowed. Then Draco noticed a wetness below his ears.
He ran his fingers along his jawline to his ears and felt that there was something that had leaked out of them. He put his hand in the light and saw a black liquid on his fingers. He looked back to where he was originally laying. There was the same dark liquid there too. It must've been the poision finally leaving him. Draco sighed a breath of relief, then turned his attention back to Hermione. He used the last bit of his energy and scooped her into his arms. She was still Icy cold and naked. He hugged her close and rubbed his hands all over her body, desperately trying to warm her up.
Then he heard a knock on his door. A matching voice rung out as well
"We are here from St. Mungos Hospital, we're coming in"
*Hermione's mind*
"Looks like the fire's beginning to die" Draco said, eyeing the flames
"How long do you say I still have to make my decision?"
"An hour" The fire sputtered, and Draco shrugged "Maybe less"
"Can I atleast know whats going on in the outside world before I make my decision?"
"Pain" Draco's voice was slow and stern. It chilled the once warm Hermione in her spot. The way he said it was so certain. A long pause followed before Draco began to speak again "If you go back out there, you will have to face physical pain, pain so bad you'll wish you were here, warm with me. If you decided to leave you'll wake up cold, and it will be the coldest you've ever felt in your life, however you will desperately wish for the cold back once it fades away because it will mask the real pain. The pain of broken ribs, and bleeding skin, you also probably have a pretty bad fracture if not break of your cheek bone, brought on by the metal tip of a large boot" Draco took a long inhale "Doesn't sound like a good time to me, personally, but hey to each their own"
Hermione shivered, she could feel the fire dying "What will happen exactly if I stay here with you"
"You will be warm and safe forever"
*Real World, in a flying ambulance to St.Mungos*
Draco was given a blanket and some medicine to heal his afflictions, and Hermione was in a bed beside him. She was wrapped tightly in a blanket around her legs, an arms. She was laying on her stomach and the Doctors tried to stop the bleeding from the cuts on her back.
"Will she be ok?" Draco asked, desperately
"Her heart's still beating" One of the Doctors said, glancing back at Draco
"And you said you did this to her, under a spell?" A second Doctor said, crossing her arms, and glaring at Draco
"I was under some sort of potion" Draco pleaded "I would never do this to her if I am in control"
"Uh-huh" The second doctor said "Well we will run some tests on your blood to see exactly what this 'potion' is, and when the results come back that you're lying to us, you will be going away for a long time"
Draco shivered, he had the sinking feeling that all of the evidence of his poisioning had leaked out of his ears "Do you see the black goo around my face and neck? I think it's the poison that leaked out"
"Yes" The first doctor said "But it's dried, so we can't exactly run a fluid test on dried whatever it is."
Draco gulped "But what if Hermione can vouch for me, I would never hurt her!"
"If she lives" The second doctor snapped, and tears rushed back to Draco's eyes. Not only was he probably never going to see the woman he loved again, but he was going to be in prison for the rest of his life. But maybe he deserved it. What kind of person would do this to the person they loved.
The rest of the ambulance ride was silent, and when they arrived at St.Mungos, Hermione and Draco were quickly whisked to an urgent care room. Hermione was all but thrown on the bed, and the doctors quickly hooked her up to fluids. Then they pointed their wands at her. But first one of them looked back at Draco
"We need you out of the room for this"
"I am not leaving Hermione!"
"Yes you are! Nurse!"
The biggest Wizard Draco had ever seen walked through the door and, like he weighed no more than an ounce picked him up and carried him, fighting what his weak body could, out of the room.
"Okay" The doctor said "We are going to try to restart her heart, with the lively spell, so when I say clear we all perform the spell"
The other doctors nodded, and with their wands pointed at her the first doctor began to count
"On the count of three, 1, 2, 3, clear!"
*Hermione's mind*
All of a sudden the room shook around Draco and Hermione. Sediment crumbled into the fire, and they could both see it starting to die
"Looks like it's time to make your choice" Draco said
"But, I'm not ready"
"Sorry"
Hermione quickly looked at Draco, then looked at the dying fire, then back her own hands, then back at Draco. It felt like her thoughts were exploding in her head. She had never had to make a decision with so little research first. But she knew what she needed to do. While she liked the idea of staying with Draco forever, she wasn't ready to die.
"Draco! I need to leave, how do I get out"
Draco just nodded toward the fire that was rapidly dying.
Hermione dove for it. The fire roared, and the feeling of her skin being charred off of her body overtook her senses and she screamed, leaving the one place that could never harm her. As the smoke started to cloud her vision she saw Draco get up, shrug then walk into the darkness, leaving her to burn, pain engulfing her body.
