Author’s Note: Quick chapter before I head to work today. So this is not a Hermione centric fic, I did focus on her today, but the next chapter if you all would like I will also add the practicals for Harry, Ron, Draco and Neville. And if you review, perhaps a little “nudge nudge, know what I mean, say no more nudge nudge” scene. (An Eric Idle reference for those of you not into Monty Python.) Thank you for reading and sticking with me, I know that last chapter wasn’t as up to scratch as the rest, that is what I get for writing it when tipsy after drinks with co-workers! Thanks again!

When Ron and Hermione entered the Great Hall side by side, but with a respectable distance between them, their friends couldn’t help but stare. Hermione flushed at their attention, but held her head high as she joined them at one of the larger tables. As she took her seat, she could have sworn she saw Professor Flitwick hand a few Galleons to Professor Sprout, who looked quite pleased.
Hermione’s flush deepened, but ignored it, hoping that it was a coincidence. She sat down and surveyed the table. Harry and Ginny were there of course, as were Neville and Luna. The surprising part was that Draco was sitting on Harry’s other side, and neither seemed to be uncomfortable. Blaise was next to Hermione and Draco. He, on the other hand, did look slightly uncomfortable.
“So,” Ginny said, breaking the awkward silence as Ron sat next to her. “Are you two together or what? Not that you deserve her.” Ginny added to her brother in a snide way.
Ron’s frown twisted into a scowl, and Hermione felt the need to intervene. “No Gin. We aren’t together, but he is still one of my best friends. We need some time, to figure things out.”
Ron opened his mouth, but shut it quickly when he realized that all eyes were on him. He nodded mutely, piling food onto his plate.
Conversations started slowly after that, the matter being forgotten, or pushed aside for the time being. Hermione helped herself to eggs and toast and ate slowly, not engaging anyone unless they spoke to her directly. Hermione decided to go up to the Headmistress’ office early to wait for her practical, and an electric spark of excitement went through her at the thought of getting back into schoolwork.
As she excused herself from the table, so did Luna and Blaise. Luna immediately pulled her arm through Hermione’s, catching her off-guard. “I would like to walk with you,” she said sweetly.
Hermione smiled. “Alright.” As they walked, Blaise was a few feet ahead, and Hermione realized that he must have one of the first time slots for the examinations.
Once they left the Great Hall, Luna wasted no time in speaking. “Did you and Ron decide not to see each other because you aren’t sexually experienced?” her voice was airy, and she sounded as if she had no idea the impact her words had.
“I beg your pardon?” Hermione squeaked out, pulling away from Luna. “No, that has nothing to do with it. We-“
Luna continued, “Because if that’s the case Hermione, all you would have to do would be to practice. Quite a simple solution.” Her large eyes were twinkling. “Unless you are experienced?” she asked innocently.
“What? No, I mean…” Hermione was frazzled. “I’m not experienced, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know how to do anything.” Her voice was slightly raised, but she didn’t notice.
“Well if you want to learn, I’m sure there are plenty of books in the library. Although personally I’ve found that the only way to learn is to do.” Luna beamed and Hermione turned red once again.
“Luna, mine and Ron’s relationship has nothing to do with sex.” Hermione said sternly, coming to her senses enough to try to censure her odd friend.
Luna was unconcerned. “Well you can’t really see Ron’s side until you’ve shagged someone can you Hermione?”
By this point they had reached the transfiguration classrooms, with McGonagall’s old office in the back. She had decided examinations would be best in private, away from the portraits’ gazes. Blaise had already stepped inside the classroom.
Before Hermione could rebut that, Luna waved and skipped off, back to the Great Hall to finish breakfast. Hermione walked into the classroom, trying to shake off her embarrassment.
Blaise, Lavender, Hannah and Justin were sitting in the classroom, waiting their turn for their examinations. They were all chatting quietly. Hermione sat down and picked up one of the books from the shelves, a battered copy of Hogwarts, A History and started reading, ignoring Blaise as he smirked at her from across the room.

“Well done Miss Granger!” the Headmistress praised as Hermione successfully completed another complex spell. “I’ve reviewed your previous exam and test scores, and unsurprisingly you have excelled across the board. You have not completed any seventh year course work, however you seem to have read up enough to pass your N.E.W.T.S with Acceptable, even potions and herbology despite having no formal education.”
“Thank you Headmistress, but I would like to pass at Outstanding.” Hermione replied outwardly calm, but proud and giddy inside.
“Understood, Miss Granger. However, you won’t be needing to sit in on formal classes if you choose. I wanted to ask you if you have given any thoughts to your career.” McGonagall peered over her glasses at the young woman.
Hermione nodded. “I was hoping to go into the Ministry and begin working on giving equal rights to all magical creatures, such as werewolves, house elves and goblins.” Her eyes lit with a fire at her own words.
McGonagall gave her a thin, but warm smile. “Very well, you seem to have strong feelings on the subject. I must tell you that we are looking to fill up several teaching posts here at Hogwarts starting at the end of this year, and a few within five years. I was hoping to hear that you had an inclination to teach.”
Hermione was stunned. “And you would be interested in having me teach? What subjects would be available?”
“For starters; Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts. I do have a few candidates in mind for those however. I was hoping you would be interested in teaching either Transfiguration, Arithmancy or Muggle Studies.”
“Don’t you have new professors already for all of those? Would it be fair to boot them out?”
The headmistress sighed. “Unfortunately some of our teachers are retiring at the end of the year, I currently have to teach Transfiguration as no new professor could be reached, and for the empty positions…we are doing our best to share the workload. Too many are still trying to figure out their place in the world as of now, which has left us educators in a bit of a bind. We will have a visiting professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts, but he has other commitments and passions to pursue at the end of the year. Muggle studies, I’m afraid is more of an independent study this year. That’s one of the reasons for this exam, and interview Miss Granger. It’s not just to see how your studies play out, it’s a job interview.”
Hermione’s head spun. “How soon will you need an answer?”
“Let’s meet again after Christmas, and discuss how you feel. In the meantime,” she cleared her throat and pulled parchment towards her, tapping it with her wand. “Here is your class schedule. It’s personalized to you, and I have added some independent studies given your interests, as well as some opportunities for you to decide if you would like to teach. Have a nice day Miss Granger.”
With that McGonagall dismissed her, and Hermione left the room, a little lightheaded, thoughts clouded with ambition.
