Chapter 8: Worrying Never Helped Anyone
For two months Hermione successfully crafted an identity designed to blend into obscurity. And in about two minutes all of that was ruined by Lucius Malfoy.
After Professor McGonagall arrived Hermione quite nearly pushed her into the door as she rushed from the room.
'Stupid, stupid, stupid,' She muttered to herself, striding past paintings of various witches and wizards, all who watched her with curiosity while others were already abed since news of the Griffin's capture had spread quickly throughout the portraits.
Rather than crawl into bed and hide beneath her blankets she chose to take a steaming hot shower. She stayed beneath the scouring hot heat until her skin was pink and the steam had left her dizzy. Only then did she wrap a towel about herself and collapse on a bench in a corner of the room.
The reality of what had happened had sunk in, and the consequences alone were enough to trigger a racing heart and mounting panic.
The absolute most important rule of time travel was to not be seen closely tied by never travel for loner than five hours. Since she had defied reality and somehow survive the second rule--the consequences of which may not await until she returned for all she knew (assuming she returned), avoiding the younger versions of the adults in the present, dead or alive, was of upmost priority.
'Why did I open my stupid mouth? Why didn't I look to see who it was?' She rested her head in her hands and stared miserably at the tiled floor.
Lucius Malfoy had seen her multiple times in the future--Draco loathed her so he would have a fair bit of information about her and he had seen her during her second year as well. And let's not ignore the obvious fact that last she checked he was attempting to kill her and her friends in the Department of Mysteries.
And now he's seen you during his seventh year in the library, facing off against a bloody Griffin.
Would she have a future to go home too? Would this somehow cause a strange ripple effect leading to the deaths of her friends? She was here, so she wasn't unborn, that said something. But it was still a horric thing to consider.
'I just want to go home,' She mumbled to herself, rubbing her temple. She inhaled deeply, and concentrated on her knees, poking out from beneath the towel, 'Hermione you fool just calm down, why worry about something that you don't even know has happened. Just keep a low profile. Your first name was not mentioned. He probably will forget just....' She pursed her lips and groaned again.
At this point the only thing she could do was dry her hair and crawl into bed. She tossed and turned, unable to completely calm down, and in the morning she had deep circles beneath her eyes. She used a little bit of magic to cover it up--but things went from bad to worse just before muggle studies began.
Her 'episode' had blown up into the biggest gossip in the entire school, and at the center was Lucius Malfoy and Lyonel Reveon (thank goodness) but mentioned almost as an afterthought was the actual Griffin--and the third party who saw it all, a girl whose identiy nobody knew, other than the fact that she was a Griffindor.
Olivia Green, she would soon learn, wasn't just hypercritical of muggle studdies--she was just as critical of the lives of the people around her and she along with several of her friends had several choice words on the topic of what happened in the library that evening--proving that girls would be....girls.
'Everyone knows that Revon can't stand Malfoy.' Hermione rested her head on her desk, and although she was genuinely sleepy she could not bring herself to doze and so when she heard this she wasn't entirely surprised, after all, Malfoy wasn't exactly a name that inspired warm and fuzzy feelings.
'I heard it has something to do with what Abraxas Malfoy did--his father had something to do with that muggle wizard quitting all of a sudden and then he died not long after.' Oliva smiled slightly, 'You don't know the half of it. My mother works at the Ministry of Magic, and she said that there was never enough informatioin to arrest anybody, and besides nobody really wanted to go up against the Malfoy family over a muggleborn but it was still rather bold. Lysander Revon--Lyone's father--is practically as pure as the Malfoy's, and just as old to boot. He can't stand Abraxas, because a few years back Abraxas had collected evidence and sent him to trial for accepting bribes--he lost his office and was completely humiliated. My mother says that he was the only person brave enough to go after the Malfoy's but it was all about revenge.'
Hermione felt like she was going to vomit. She had somehow wound up in a room with two guys who loathed one another. Wonderful.
'I heard that Revon detests Malfoy because he's jealous of him. Slughorn says Malfoy is the perfect model student, the perfect model Slytherin and all Revon is good for is Quidditch and detention. It doesn't matter how smart he is he doesn't even try to do well in school. I heard they almost expelled him last year.'
This was extremely interesting--like sitting in on a soap opera--and all news to her. She had no idea about any of this stuff because who would talk about it?
And if she found it interesting--well the entire school talked of nothing else in the weeks to come. The incident in the library evolved into a slew of exaggerated and at times completely fabricated stories. In general everyone believed that prior to the Griffin appearing Revon had been studying in the library when Malfoy arrived and said a few provacative words to get him going--something that was apparently incredibly easy. A duel ensued, and Malfoy had seriously hurt Revon when the Griffin attacked.
The mysterious Griffindor had confirmed all of this to be true, but no one wanted to reveal who she was for fear of Malfoy getting his revenge. But because he was a prefect he then made an effort to get rid of the Griffin.
This was the most popular version of the story. A somewhat less popular version was that it had been Lucius studying in the library and Revon challenged him, though many dismissed this to be untrue and there were a handful of whispers that one of the boys had even been responsible for setting the Griffin free but it was generally believed neither was that demented.
Hermione made a pointed effort to avoid being alone anywhere, because she knew that Lucius knew her name, and her fear was that they might run into one another again. Still, while she knew it was possible that he might blame her, she generally believed that even he was smart enough to look beyond the gossip.
But because she was afraid to run into him she wasn't able to get into the library to research. This placed her in a very difficult situation. In the end she decided that when the next break came she would take advantage of the fact that all the student's would likely go home.
in the meanwhile she would just follow a very, very careful schedule of researching during study breaks, when the library was filled with other people.
Thank you for your reviews--my chapters do tend to be short but it is a style I think I am gravitating towards--I appreciate any other reviews. Thanks for reading!
Note: The Family Revon I made up but the entire thing regarding the Malfoy involvement with the resignation of the Minister of Magic....that is true, to the best of my knowledge, though I don't know if he died.
