"Plain and simple, Captain," Harry began, reaching out to lay a hand on Roark's arm, making him look over at him, nodding when he saw the inner fire die to a simmer, "we were ordered here."
"Of that, I am well aware, Lieutenant. What I want to know is WHY? What made Headquarters decide to send their youngest, brightest warriors in the history of the Academy here to Aquaria?"
"I would think that would be obvious, but fine," Roark said, "if you really want to waste the time, we'll tell you what you could read a hell of a lot faster. After I graduated from the Academy, I was sent to Virgon as my first assignment."
"I was already there, part of a task force to try to stop the monopoly of drugs, illegal gambling, and human trafficking that was going on there. Our Commander was Colonel Bertrum."
Ardyn nodded. "I know of him," he said with a nod. "He's a good man."
A short nod from both of them. "Yes," came from Harry, "he was."
"WAS!" came the startled question.
"Yes. He was killed. As I said, the task force was working a case on smuggled drugs, kidnapped children, teenagers, and young adults, as well as several other illegal activities into and OUT of Virgon. Unfortunately, we were getting nowhere fast, and knowing that Roark's field of study and expertise in the Academy was tactics and strategy, Colonel Bertrum handed the files we had over to him. Told him to see what he could make of them. I was then ordered to remain with him and answer any questions that he may have had."
"I read over those files very carefully, took more than a few notes, considered the information, asked Harry a few specific questions, then went to talk to the rest of the team, including the Colonel. Once I was done with my questions, I returned to the files. It didn't take me long after that to begin to see the threads... some of the patterns. I began to pick them apart, figuring out how they were operating. It took a bit more time to put together a plan of action after realizing the who, the how, and the where."
"After he called the team together, he explained what he had found and the plan of action he wished to put into action. Bertrum agreed with everything he came up with and we then set to work closing down the pleasure houses, his drug dens, and the illegal gambling dens, capturing and arresting many of the people who worked for the main boss. Unfortunately for us, HIM we couldn't touch as he was not a citizen of Virgon, nor did he live there. He lived on, and worked out of Aquaria."
"Tom Marvolo Riddle."
A stiff nod. "Yes, Tom Marvolo Riddle. To make matters worse, we soon began to realize that his operation was a whole lot bigger than we had thought it was. That he had other enterprises as well that were as wide and as varied as the Colonies themselves."
"You want someone dead? Contact Riddle and for a fee, he'll assign one of his Terminators to take care of your problem. Looking for something you can't find legally? Tell Riddle what you're looking for, no matter what it is, or WHO it is, and also for a fee, he'll get it for you. Looking to get ahold of a rare, or specific drug? Tell Tom Riddle what you're looking for, and for a large fee, he'll get it for you."
"Hum...We've discovered that here as well. As for his Terminators...he has quite a few under contract. Some we know about, but most we don't. His top three we DO know. One is his left hand, his second, and the one who gives the other Terminators their assignments. His name is Rodolphus Lestrange, and a more deadly man you will never meet. Then there's his brother, Riddle's right hand, Rabastan Lestrange, also as deadly as they come. Their body count alone is astonishing, and as soon as their names are mentioned, people pale and run the other way. Then we have Rodolphus' wife, Bellatrix. Her, though, we have very little on, other than her kills are usually tortured first before she kills them."
Roark nodded. "We know of them. No one has ever been able to identify them though. Rodolphus will come, do the job he was given, then vanish. No fuss. No mess and certainly no evidence. He had often been referred to as a shadow, or a ghost as he seemed to be able to move around unseen. He's also known to work with his brother, who is nearly as elusive. The wife? We're hoping to obtain more information on her now that we're here.
"The other Terminators, as well. As for Tom Riddle...he has a lot of people that work for him and WITH him. He's put together an Inner Circle of some the most influential and powerful people known in the Colonies, and most of them are in positions of power and authority."
"Most of them," Harry picked up, "we know next to nothing about, and the few that we DO know about, we need the proof against them before we can hope to move against them."
"To make a long story short, about halfway through our investigations, Riddle sent in orders to his Terminators on Virgon to kill the task force, which they began doing immediately, including Colonel Bertrum, until only Harry and I were left., and yes, before you even ask, they DID try to kill us. We had a few close calls too."
"Too close," came Severus' growl, his dark eyes narrowed on the Peverell Potter brothers. "You two were reckless at the best of times."
"Yes, Severus," Harry turned to look at him, grinning, "so you've said numerous times."
"I wasn't aware you were on Virgon, Severus."
"No one was meant to. I was undercover. I made contact with the boys not long after they arrived, and began to share the information I had obtained."
"Which was helpful. They sent us a new team. Unfortunately, no one at Command thought to tell them anything about the case, or where we stood," Harry went on in a dry tone, "and therefore none of them seemed to know, or were able to figure out what needed to be done next. So," here he shrugged, "as Roark had been the one to come up with all tactics and strategies we were using, and because we were the only two survivors of the original team who knew the investigation inside and out...the only ones who knew the case inside and out, as well as what next needed to be down, Severus and the Counter-Intelligence team that had been sent to oversee the case, Captain Rohan and Lt. Gareth Collinson suggested that Roark be given the command."
The derisive snort that came from Roark had Ardyn turning his head. "I gather you weren't happy about that?"
