Spells flew through the air, explosions rocked the castle, and there was so much dust and debris in the air, Matt Santini, Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, and Ron Weasley could barely see to navigate the maze of corridors. Although the four of them knew the castle by heart, the battle raging around them had changed the landscape drastically from what they knew. An explosion in the corridor ahead of them forced the four to change directions as they escaped from the Room of Requirement, searching for the snake, Nagini.
“It’s getting intense!” Matt shouted as they ran, his hand clasped to Hermione’s. Ron fired a spell and the door in front of them shot open. They raced outside, ducking spells, and firing back. The four rushed into a tower as a large group of Death Eaters spotted the combatants and gave chase. They hurried up the stairs of the tower as Ron blasted another door open and shot across a wooden chain-link bridge, Hermione firing a spell at the door as they rushed out of it. Matt let go of Hermione for a moment as they shot into the castle proper.
Suddenly the floor below them lurched and the world turned upside down as an explosion rocked the castle, sending the group to the ground and covered in wreckage. Harry groaned and forced several cement bricks off himself as he stood. Hermione was slowly staggering to her feet, and she yanked Ron up as well. There was a low moaning and Hermione turned to her boyfriend. Matt pushed a section of floor off himself and attempted to stand but faltered and fell. Hermione gasped and rushed to his side.
Matt looked paled and was breathing heavily, he looked down and could see there was a large, jagged piece of castle sticking out of his side. He coughed and shuddered for moment. Hermione knelt beside him and tried to pull him to his feet.
“Matt, come on! We need to go, get you to Madam Pomfrey.” Hermione begged but Matt shook his head. Tears were streaming down her face.
“Hermione…” he said and slowly pushed himself up and gasped with pain, stumbling forward and propping himself against the door frame they had just run through, slowly slid down the door and sat on the floor. “This wound…it’s not gonna heal…it’s not gonna get better…”
“No…don’t say that!” Hermione begged. Matt coughed again, this time blood came up and dribbled down his chin.
“Hermione…I love you.” He said, taking a ragged breath.
“I love you too, now come on! Please…you can’t die!” Hermione begged, sobbing. Matt cupped her chin weakly and caressed her cheek with his thumb.
“We all die Hermione. It’s part of life.” He said and coughed again.
“Matt!” Hermione clutched him as Harry came over.
“Go. You’ll be ok. Kill the snake, kill old no-nose, for me.” Matt said and looked at Harry and Ron as the two of them closed in. Matt was in pain but still conscious and weakening fast. Ron looked across the bridge and down to see the group of Death Eaters rushing through the door and ascending the tower they had just come up.
“We’ve got to go.” He said, tears in his own eyes.
“Hermione…” Harry said and gently prized Hermione off the dying Matt.
“Go. I’ll see you…again…I’ll find you…” Matt promised as Harry and Ron dragged Hermione off and through the castle, her sobs of anguish echoing through the corridors.
The door to the bridge banged and Matt knew he had only seconds. Using the last of his strength, he pushed himself up and out of the doorway before collapsing on the outside wall of the castle on the bridge itself. He grinned and drew his wand, there was one last thing he could do before they broke through. The lead Death Eater cocked his head to the side as the group cautiously approached the fallen Matt.
“Well, well, what have we here? Injured, are we?” the Death Eater said, Matt recognized him as Scabior, one of the Snatchers who had taken them all to Malfoy Manor to be tortured. He would at least get one known enemy off the list. “I know you, don’t I? Who are you again?” Scabior said as he crouched down to Matt’s level. Matt gave a bloody grin to the Death Eater.
“I’m your daddy!” Matt said and wordlessly flicked his wand. The base of the tower they had just ascended erupted in an incredible blast of concrete and debris. The bridge faltered as the tower came crashing down towards the castle and on the bridge as the Death Eaters screamed, unable to escape their doom, as the tower collapsed into the castle.
Hermione knelt in the Great Hall. Harry had disappeared after Snape’s death. Ron was there too, beside her. The dead were being gathered and she was numb all over. Immediately after they had left Matt, the trio encountered Fred and Percy, battling Death Eaters. A terrible attack on the castle had destroyed the corridor they were in, and Fred had been killed. She was kneeling between the bodies recovered so far. Matt was beside her, laying on his back, his eyes closed. Hermione had been told he was found that way and the rock that had impaled him was nowhere to be seen.
She held his hand, even though he could no longer feel it, and it was growing colder with each passing second, she felt connected to him still. All the years at Hogwarts, growing up together, falling in love with each other. She had looked at the future and seen only him. He had said the same thing. Now that future was gone. Hermione did not know what awaited her now, she was not sure she wanted to know.
A hand on her shoulder brought her out of her thoughts as the Weasleys gathered. Ginny fell into Hermione’s arms, sobbing hysterically seeing both her brother and her adopted brother from overseas dead was too much for her. Hermione knew she had to be strong for Ginny though. Ginny’s anguish gave Hermione strength, and she whispered comforting words to the other girl.
Before the day was out though, Matt Santini, Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Severus Snape, Lavender Brown, Colin Creevey, and fifty others were avenged, when Harry Potter dueled and killed Lord Voldemort. Hermione never found out who cast the spell responsible for Matt or Fred’s deaths, but she had a sneaking suspicion that the group of Death Eaters who were found in the rubble of the collapsed tower where Matt had been found was responsible.
Standing in the Great Hall, she knelt one last beside her fallen boyfriend and swore she would never forget him as she pulled a sheet over his resting body.
In a purely white and slightly luminescent, train station Matt Santini stood at a window looking out. He could see Hermione Granger, her world was entirely in color, she was working in the Ministry of Magic, and she was smiling at someone Matt could not see. The unknown person had brought her lunch though, and she was very pleased, he could see her hugging them. Hermione was going to be alright. She had healed. He stepped back from the window and turned to the person next to him.
“How are things on your end?” Matt asked. The tall redhead next to him was looking out another window beside his. He turned from the family of redheads, with a few other hair colors of brown, black, and blonde mixed in and gave a satisfied sigh.
“They’ll be alright, I think.” Fred Weasley replied. “George is having a rough time of it though, hasn’t quite gotten back the humor yet.”
“Well, that’s not surprising, is it? This is literally the only thing that could ever separate the two of you. I’m convinced you were planning on booking a double wedding when the time came.” Matt gestured around to the pearly white of a very empty King’s Cross station.
“Ah, he’d’ve loved a double wedding. Twice the headache for mum!” Fred joked and Matt grinned. The two men moved away from the wall and their windows to sit on a bench.
“Well, what now?” Fred asked as they looked around.
“I guess we wait –” Matt said and was interrupted by a whistle and chug of an approaching steam engine.
“That didn’t take long.” Fred said as the engine, also a pearly white with golden highlights pulled into a stop.
“No, it did not.” Matt said and stood, moving down the engine which looked like a white version of the Hogwarts express, complete with billowing steam. Fred got up as well, looking at the engine. As Matt approached a carriage, the door was already open.
“Are you ready?” Matt asked.
Fred took one last longing look back at the window and then sighed.
“As I’ll ever be. On to the next big adventure, right Matt?”
“Onward, Fred!” Matt said and the pair of them boarded the train. Matt found a small compartment midway down the train, but Fred was not in the mood for company at the moment and decided he wanted to be by himself. Matt could hardly blame him. He and Fred had been at the station for what seemed like ten years, or it could have been ten seconds. He was not sure. Matt settled into the seat and the train’s whistle gave a blast as it moved out of the station. The rhythm of the track and the chug of the engine lulled Matt to sleep as steam billowed from it.
A seemingly infinitely long amount of time later, Matt awakened to find himself on a train. He was not sure how he had gotten onto it. He had been enjoying a nice relaxing time since he was last on the train, having met several familiar faces in the interim, and a few had been waiting for him as well. It was a mystery to him as to why he would be back on this particular train. The engine lurched as it came to a stop.
Matt stood and peeked out of his compartment. There was no one else on the train. He shrugged and moved down the carriage and stepped off onto the platform. Sure, enough he was back at King’s Cross station. It was very odd indeed for him to be here. The steam from the engine billowed and then dissipated. Standing there on the platform was a young woman, his age, with a mane of bushy brown hair. Matt’s heart leapt and he now understood.
“Matt!? Is it…is it you?” Hermione Granger asked, and she shot forward. “I don’t understand, I was just feeling tired, and I laid down to sleep…and then I woke up here.”
“Hermione…you were more than just a little tired…” Matt began.
“What do you – “ Hermione’s eyes widened with understanding. “Oh! I’m…dead.”
Matt nodded and took her hand.
“But it’s not so bad. It’s pretty decent, the afterlife.” Matt explained.
“I never forgot you, you know. I love you.” She said as they walked towards the train.
“I know. I think that’s why I’m here.”
“I’m to spend my afterlife with you?” Hermione asked, hope in her eyes.
“Only if you want. I know you married, had a family and a successful career…”
“Yes.”
“Yes what?” Matt asked, confused.
“I want to spend my afterlife with you. I want to make up for all the time we didn’t get the first time.” Hermione grasped his hand and leaned into him. Matt snuggled into her and nuzzled her head. She sighed contentedly as they boarded the train together.
“You know, Molly’ll be expecting us. She’ll have dinner ready by the time we get there.” Matt said as Hermione slipped under his arm, just like she used to when they were going to Hogwarts.
“That sounds lovely.” Hermione said as Matt dipped his head and kissed her.
“I love you.” He whispered.
“Love you too.” Hermione replied as the train pulled out of the station.
