~~~ ATTACK ~~~
Mackenzie had been up for some time on Monday morning when the Blakes came-to. As they descended the stairs they overheard him say. “I’m sure you would not like to have to wait until the middle of next year by approaching Lord Blake directly.”
“Well I thought just a private word to emphasise the urgency of my particular case.”
“If you do so, then the Minister’s instructions are quite clear. No matter how weak your defences are, your verbal request will automatically put you in the lowest priority category.”
Draco conveyed to Harry to stay where he was; then went down to join Mackenzie.
“Oh! Hello Lord Duindhu, perhaps you could have a word with your partner on my behalf.”
“For such an august personage as yourself, of course I will. Now let me see;” Draco fished out some vellum and pretended to peruse it: “I think he would have time in August the year after next … Would that suit you?”
“Oh … I see … Perhaps I might be able to put my request on parchment after all … Good day My Lord … Auror.”
The slamming door denoted the exit of another annoyed ministry official.
“Thanks for that Draco, he was getting quite insistent. We’ve had a constant stream of them since six this morning.”
“Maybe we should have reinstated the Fidelius, after all,” said Harry, coming down the remaining stairs. “Let’s go talk to Aunt Walburga.”
“Good morning My Lords, how can I help you?” Walburga gave a slight curtsy.
“Firstly, I want to tell you about some interesting facts. Do you remember our discussion about Mudbloods?”
“Yes, My Lord. I have not shouted at them; as per your instructions. I try to hide my irritation now.”
“Yes, thank you, Auntie; we’re very grateful of the peace. However, some recent research into magely heredity has shown that those we supposed to be sports from muggle parents are not so. Take Hermione, for instance [here Walburga scowled]. Her mother has forbears from the Longbottom family and her father is connected to the Malfoys. The Evans family of my mother has Thomas predecessors as well as Blakes. So, you see, it is almost impossible for new powers to occur spontaneously. Every mage has blood from one or other of the old families, even if it skipped a few generations.”
“I see, My Lord, I feel rather foolish about it.”
“Not to worry, Auntie, lots of pure-bloods are reeling about the revelations. However, we’d like you to use your vocal powers on any of these stuffed-shirts who come in demanding that we alter their wards immediately.”
“Yes, Auror Mackenzie was having great difficulties fending them off.”
“Exactly! We rather hoped that your vociferousness could be put to use defending the house from these intrusions.”
“Gladly! What Fun!”
After the brief chat and making an invisible medallion-only access ward just inside the hallway on the house side of Auntie’s picture, the trio went to join those who were also partaking breakfast.
Following a general round of greetings, Harry told them about the new arrangement: “Probably better if you use the back door or the portals for the moment,” he added amidst the laughter.
The laughter increased when Walburga’s screaming vituperation started in the entrance, soon to be punctuated by a slamming front door.
There was no warding meeting that day, so Harry went to the Duindhu Library and worked on his papers about geas; discussing his propositions with Uncle Travis. It turned out that there were useful references in other books on the shelves, so Bookworm was kept busy locating them and sorting out the chapters for Harry to peruse.
The visits had stopped by tea time. After silence reigned for an hour or so, Harry went to see Walburga: “Thank you My Lady Walburga.”
“No! Thank you, My Lord,” said she, curtseying. “I’ve had a great time shouting at all those stuffed shirts. Much more entertaining than before, they even tried to argue back. Your poor Mackenzie had a hard time of it this morning, I’m so glad you let me help him.”
~~~ PRIORITIES ~~~
Before the evening meeting was held the Dumbledorian Cabinet and Aurors Leadership Group had had a quick get together and agreed the names of all those to be involved in the assault on the manor.
Draco and Harry used the dining room at Number Twelve for what had been pencilled in as the Dumbledorians’ Christmas meal. Instead it turned out to be a dining council of war with Mackenzie attending. The first discussion was about providing wards and what priorities should be adopted.
“All our families already have the best wards, Harry,” said Justin. “I know of a couple near our house who have minimal wards. If I extend our tholus to cover them, we’ll include some muggle families as well. It will become a sort of miniature version of Godric’s Hollow.”
Quite a few others agreed with that sentiment and said they would do likewise.
“Okay; let’s be good neighbours first. Don’t forget to remind the other mages about apparating only from outside their tholii; things will get too complicated if we have to charm different medallions for all kinds of purposes. Imagine carrying more coin than you can spend.”
Chief Shacklebolt arrived with the Auror contingent and then came the serious bit.
Kingsley, voted as chairman, started: “Friends, we all know why we are here. Some of the birds have flown, either abroad or to their headquarters. The arrested ones are being held in Azkaban because the Ministry holding cells started to overflow. We have surveillance which shows some forty or more enemy agents huddled in the headquarters, including the Seignior himself. That complex is our next target. I believe Katie and Angelina have a new jumping off ground.”
“Angelina and I have been experimenting with the two charms which we captured,” said Katie. “We have altered their starting location to somewhere near the Burrow, because they won’t expect the attack to come from that direction and, of course, it’s much nearer. When you are ready we can use the tracer to burst the ward-dome round our target. Then we and some of the new elves will create a traction beam in the form of a light tube which will allow muggle-invisible flying into the middle. We will also make traction-tubes to get the members to the places that Draco will talk about.”
“There is a way that the elfin corps can enter the premises at much the same time,” added Kreacher. “Mistress Hermione has given us immunity amulets, so that we will not have to obey the master of the house automatically, but their efficacy begins to wane after an hour’s use.”
“No one will be able to see the Manor unless they wear a ring,” Hermione reported: “The Auror back-up team has made enough replicas for each one of you to wear. Please collect them after this briefing.”
“As well as the one we visited, there are two other hidden personal entrances which appear not to have been warded, those would give entry to small amounts of people,” stated Draco. “So about nine to a dozen of us could emerge inside the house at three given points each. If you look at the plan on the wall, those places are marked with red dots.”
“The suggested plan is as follows.” Hamish went over to the map. “Three traction-tubes to within quarter of a mile of the wards. Nearer than that risks aura detection. The blue dots represent the landing areas; note that they are all obscured by trees. Each of these also represents the entry into a tunnel for the house parties and for each third of the elfin corps. The three elf parties will be led by, Kreacher, Phealey and Pullet. The inside parties will be led by Blaise, Draco and Gregory because they all have visited the manor house before. Hamish, Porlock and Tarmindale will also go with the inside parties because they can communicate mentally, as will an Auror. That gives us good communication as Harry will act as co-ordinator for the outside parties using his mental connection to Draco. To complete the picture Orcas, the Dragon, will patrol with myself, Hilda, Seamus and Dean on board accompanied by Fawkes. There is another link with Harry via the dragon’s mind and Hilda has an equivalent connection. There are lists of people, stating who is attached to which division, please peruse these and the plan, being ready to depart in half an hour’s time. The bulk of the Auror party will ride the main traction-tube when it bursts the dome. Please note; no one is to move within the quarter mile perimeter until Harry gives the order. Then we move in quickly.”
There were a few questions which Hamish or Mackenzie answered; meanwhile Katie and Angelina and the Auror back-up team went outside the village dome at The Burrow and set up tracers to the blue dot areas. The company ported or apparated chez Weasley and used their broomsticks to reach the new location.
Once the teams were in place the girls’ squad opened the tracers out into traction-tubes. As the leader of each team landed a temporary shield was set up, mainly to stop the noise of landing alerting any guards. Once everyone was landed and sorted Harry was informed. Not having any direct contact with the Auror party, Harry asked Orcas to tell Hilda to indicate to them when to start. It took forty-five minutes for each person to be in place. Once everyone had reported that they were ready, Angelina activated the bursting-beam and Harry ordered the troops forward.
Five minutes later when the dome burst, the inside parties came out of hiding and the elves went in to incapacitate their counterparts. Almost immediately, the Auror party started arriving in the central quadrangle and the perimeter troops attacked through the now disabled tholus. Orcas and those aboard her strafed the squads of satraps each time they assembled to oppose the Aurors.
Quite a few of the satraps were stunned, not being in the least prepared for the onslaught from the inside, from the sky, from the south-west, or in the evening, but there were pockets of resistance. One such centred round Lucius in the blue ballroom who were being attacked by Draco’s group which by now had been augmented by others including Harry.
“You’re no heir of mine, you muggle-loving turncoat;” was the mildest of Lucius’s expletives as the two Malfoys battled it out.
Draco was equally damning of his father’s attitude.
Different shades of green curses were hurled across the intervening space, none of them hitting Draco, because he used his mirror shield to great effect. After an hour Lucius was beginning to tire. He started to understand his dilemma when faced with a very healthy teenager well versed in the tactics of magical warfare. As his energy began to ebb, the Seignior realised that he had to be arrested, be killed or escape. Like Voldemort before him at the battle of the Ministry, he decided on escape, but how to distract a vengeful son?
Narcissa was cowering behind Lucius, enfeebled by his continuous abuse of her; so, all she could do was hold a weak shield. Lucius sent out a brilliant set of sparks, temporarily obscuring Draco’s vision, and in those few seconds magically placed Narcissa in front of himself. As Draco’s sight cleared he went into attack mode, nearly cursing his mother to oblivion. He threw the hex sideways, accidentally hitting someone else’s opponent instead. Pushed into her son, Narcissa collapsed and Lucius apparated at the same time. Draco disentangled himself from his mother but was too late to attach a tracer to the disapparated Seignior. Seeing their leader gone, the remaining uninjured satraps also disapparated side-alonging their walking wounded.
All that was left was the mopping up.
~~~ RECOVERY ~~~
Narcissa was in a bad way, she had cuts and bruises all over her emaciated frame. Draco fell weeping by her side. Harry, drawn by his partner’s despair, came to comfort him and organised a stretcher-party. Taken to a clean bedroom, Narcissa was seen by Poppy, whilst next door Lavender and Ernie patched up the less serious injuries.
“There appears to be nothing broken, Draco, but she will need the same type of treatment that Harry gave you to begin with. I’ll ask Lavender to look after her if you like. Would you make up some more of this fortifying potion for me please? We have found others like your mother in the underground dungeons.”
“Yes Poppy, straight away. Mother is going to be all right, isn’t she?”
“I think we have caught her in time. She has a tough constitution, otherwise she would have been dead a month or so ago.”
“That bastard of a father has a lot to answer for. I look forward to using Crucio on him when he’s caught.”
“I agree with you Partner. However, let’s look after the survivors, first shall we? Both of us can make the potion and I’m sure our two elfin assistants would love to help.”
Numerous pops had introduced the manor house elves led by Phealey and Pullet: “You bet, we have some house-elves in a pretty bad state too.”
Narcissa awoke from her stupor; looking at the frigtened elves she quavered: “You … Will … Accept … My son … Draco … as Master … Mistress has spoken.” Narcissa relapsed into her coma.
“You heard your mistress, didn’t you?”
“YES, MASTER DRACO,” the Manor-elves replied, bowing.
“Good! You are to obey Elder Reeve Kreacher’s orders until the Mistress is fully recovered. Do you understand?”
“YES MASTER DRACO.” The relieved-looking elves popped out of the room.
Lavender came into the room: “You boys run along, please. We have to undress Mrs Malfoy to see to her injuries. We’ll call you back when she’s in a fit state to talk to you, okay?”
Draco nodded a reluctant agreement; going, with Harry, to see how the others had fared. They investigated various rooms until they found where the junta was meeting.
*This place is in a shocking mess*, sent Draco as they walked around. *Only a small amount came from the attack. What can my father have been allowing? He was always so proud of the Manor.*
Harry squeezed Draco’s hand comfortingly, not wishing an outward show of the emotion he was feeling. Draco caught Harry’s support and squeezed back in recognition.
~~~ LATER ~~~
“How’s your Mother?” was Kingsley’s first question. On receiving the report, he continued: “Blaise was hit, but he’ll recover in time, not so nine of the satraps. We’ve taken about the same number into custody. Minister Weasley has called an emergency meeting of the Wizengamot for tomorrow afternoon and asked that you both attend along with Dean, Seamus and Hermione. Do I take it that you will accept?”
“Yes, we will, but now we have potions to make Kingsley.”
~~~ MEMBERS MEETING ~~~
Despite his aversion, Harry apparated to Toppers Wallow and the team of four set about creating the resuscitating potion.
After making it and whilst it proved the quartet went upstairs to have some supper. To their surprise, all the Society Members were there waiting to start the meal.
“You shouldn’t have waited,” Harry protested.
“Yes, we should Mr Chairman. Will you bring the adjourned meeting to order please?” asked Justin.
“Okay if you want to, but we’ll start eating first, both of us are famished.”
Each chair had its attendant house-elf, many of them staring at Harry and Draco in awe. The soup was served and eaten before a further word was spoken.
“I have a membership proposal to make,” said Susan. “In recognition of their efforts and fighting abilities today, I propose Phealey and Pullet.”
“Does anyone second that?” asked Harry.
A forest of hands shot up.
“Oh! I see … Well … Let it be recorded that Hannah did. All those in favour? … Any against? … Passed nem-con. Next business after the main course please.”
That business was the formal presentation of medallions to the two elves and their signing the parchment.
After the sweet Neville stood: “I have further members to propose, not for bravery in battle, but for medical support in carrying out stretcher duties under fire. Despite three of them being charmed muggles, they insisted on flying tandem with us to the manor, and rescued quite a few of us who were injured. I propose Horrty, Cole, Grey and Wash.”
“Seconded!” shouted Gregory before Harry could ask.
Their presentation took place after coffee was served in the cottage’s crowded ‘L’ shaped common room.
“A further proposition please? Mr Chairman,” it was Dean who stood this time. That this society recommends to the Order of the Phoenix that Elder Kreacher be made a member of that order.”
Seconded by Seamus, the Order Members present promised that they would take that proposition to the Order’s next meeting. The meeting then decided on the next most deserving cases for enhanced wards, based on the batting order that Mackenzie’s two clerks had produced; allocating people to carry out the tasks as Christmas presents.
Meeting over, the potions foursome retired to bottle up the now proved medicine, giving it to some of the corps to take to the various patients in need.
On retiring to bed, at two in the morning, Harry hugged a worried Draco, stroking his hair until he went to sleep.
~~~ TUESDAY ~~~
This should have been when Harry was in the Aurorbunker teaching. Kingsley had said that they would have a shortened session after lunch, because many of the people involved in the raid would also be in Harry’s class and they needed rest just as much as their instructor did.
The Blakes woke about nine, breakfasted, ported to the Burrow and followed the traction beam from the assigned spot. The central one had not been shut down after the raids, in order to help with the evacuation of troops and injured. Hermione went with them and whilst Draco went to see his mother, Harry and Hermione together with Dean and Seamus erected a village-type tholus over the grounds and cottage-wards over the manor. Once that was done Hermione went to be with Ronald whilst Harry sought out his partner.
Draco reported that Lavender had said that there had been a slight improvement in Narcissa’s health, emphasising that what she most needed was undisturbed rest. The Blakes had a chat with Poppy and the invalid. With her permission, Narcissa would be taken back to Number Twelve and to a room at Chantry Cottage as soon as it was safe for her to travel. The Manor’s elves were in a bad way and so they were also to be accommodated in the London House. Most needed healing and were told to rest after being seen-to. The fact that their Mistress was in a temporarily-connected residence also helped them to feel secure there.
After lunch D&H and D&S flooed to the ministry building; Ronald was there in a wheelchair, fussed over by an overindulgent Hermione. They went to the Wizengamot Hall; almost at once, after they were seated alongside their friends, the session began.
Minister Weasley was sworn in with due ceremony.
“Fellows of the Wizengamot, thank you for renewing your confidence in me. I will endeavour to carry out my office for the wellbeing of all. I have, in my first speech to you, a sad report to make, that of the death of three of our Seneschals. No matter what their politics, they were still Seneschals of this august assemblage, so it is fitting that we should stand in silence for their departing.” Arthur read out their full names gravely.
There were various derogatory comments, but the Seneschals rose and stood in silence.
“Thank you for that solemn remembrance. Now to the next piece of business. With so many Seneschals no longer available to us we are in danger of becoming inquorate. Many of you will remember what we were told happened during the goblin wars and how difficult it was to remake our assembly. For those who cannot remember, I suggest you consult with the honourable Professor Binns at Hogwarts, I am quite sure he would love to regale you about the intricacies. Many of us remember his exhaustive and convoluted lessons very well.”
A chuckle ran around the assembly.
“I suggest, therefore that we create some new Seneschals this very day whilst we are still quorate, just. I look for propositions from the floor.
“I propose Mage Hermione Jane Granger; she has been a solid supporter of Seneschal Lord Blake-Potter. Her work for the recognition of all races is commendable; with the new revelations about genes and antecedents she has many proven ancestors from the old established mage families.”
“Seconded.”
“All in favour?”
A forest of order papers rose into the air.
“Carried nem-con.”
Hermione rose: “I thank this worthy assemblage for the honour bestowed upon me, and will do my utmost to uphold the rule of justice that we represent. We have previously and in good faith, elected to Seneschal-hood two worthy members of the goblin race. It would behove this assemblage to act in accordance with its own edicts and set an example to the whole magical world. In the light of this I would propose that we honour the elfin fraternity by electing one from among them and who has proven himself worthy. Many of you will remember the battle of Hogwarts and the leader of the elfin army who proved himself during the fighting. Since then he has resettled many of his kin in houses which respect the ancient code of protection and duty. He has also voluntarily become a tutor in our academy. I therefore propose Elder Kreacher, Reeve of the house Blake as a fit candidate to be considered.”
During the shocked silence that followed, Harry rose and seconded Hermione’s proposal. The hands that first rose in support were those of the progressive party and, surprisingly, Glandulous’ group were the next in support. A ripple of raised hands flowed out from both sources until another nem-con decision was made.
The next persons to be created were Dean and Seamus – in their own rights not as scions of their families. They and Hermione were invested in their Malkin made caps and gowns. Whilst this was happening, D&H were in an ante chamber persuading a shy Kreacher to accept the honour. In the end he did it because Harry became exasperated and threatened to order him to do it. Back in the court he was applauded when he received his insignia and went to sit with his two masters. Following that a delegation was voted to ask the centaurs to put forward a representative, and a further wizard and two witches were voted in.
“Fellows of the Wizengamot, the family and property of one of our Seneschals have been put in jeopardy by the actions of the so-called Seignior. I propose we rectify this mistake immediately.” It was Zandra Bradley, the chairman, who spoke: “The personage of Lucius Malfoy, masquerading as the Seignior, has forfeited all his property under our laws by assassinating the former minister in front of so many reliable witnesses. This will disinherit his heir who, despite earlier juvenile failings, has fought valiantly on the side of the light, suffering some horrible tortures in its cause. I propose that this property, once purified of dark magic, should be restored to the heir intact, so that one of our previously great families may resume its walk in the light and continue to be an example of leadership for us all to emulate.”
The greatest majority understood and voted in favour of Draco taking charge of all the remaining Malfoy estates and appurtenances.
Various procedural items followed, including trial dates for the recently arrested people accused of being satraps. The final act was the enrobing of the other three newest and astounded candidates, as they had all responded to the Wizengamot’s call promptly.
Over tea in the Aurorbunker KIngsley and our two held a debriefing meeting, instead of the usual training session.
~~~ PARTY ~~~
After Arthur had presented his credentials to a surprised Muggle Prime Minister an impromptu party took place at Chantry Cottage; including the whole Weasley clan, Hamish with the Griphook family, plus Winky and Kreacher. The Granger parents were included too, being side-along apparated from the Potteries a day earlier than had been planned. They were allotted one of the double rooms upstairs. It took some more persuading for Molly to stay in the other one, but the nearness of London through the new portal settled that, it being easier for her husband to access his new ministerial office.
In the evening Narcissa was well enough to be moved into the single room at Chantry Cottage, away from the rumpus of Aurors decontaminating the Manor of its evil hexes and dark magic. She complained to Draco that she had not yet been introduced properly his partner and so for a short interval both Blakes sat in her room to bring her up to speed. They also did some surreptitious energy transfer, a new charm that Harry had invented; so, by the following evening Narcissa was well enough to come down to dinner.
“What did you do to her?” Poppy muttered to the two lovers. “She shouldn’t have recovered so quickly, not more sex, surely?”
After they had blushed and explained the process, they were persuaded to go and see Blaise to pass on some added energy to him. Mind you, the Blakes ate mountains of chocolate to rectify their own energy levels. Three elves were helped in the same way, as well.
