After he had steadied himself, he bent to comfort the sniffling boy who had just barreled into him. Watching Roark comfort the child, reaching up to gently brush away his tears, talking to him softly, Apollo had the sudden thought that brought a smile to his lips. When the time came, and when Roark was finally ready to settle down, when he decided it was time to have children, he would make a great father. Especially, he thought, as I know that both my beloved nephews are two of only a few thousand men born with the very rare carrier gene.
As he looked over at Harry, he saw the smile that curved his lips as he squatted beside his brother. Apollo finally found his mind filled with the picture of Harry and Roark coming to the family, their newborns in their arms, their smiling husbands at their side.
"There you are, you naughty boy!" came the harried, worried tone of the child's mother. "Thank you, Lt. Roark, Lt. Hadrian. One micron {second} he was by my side, the next he was gone."
"Hello, Siress Malcolm. It was no trouble at all," he said as he and Harry got to their feet. "He was just telling us about this adorable white and tan patched dagget {dog} puppy he saw in the pet store window just down the lane."
She shook her head and gave them a smile. "Of course he was," she said. glancing down at her son, then back to Roark. "Kody has been asking for a dagget {dog} puppy for nearly a yahren {year}. Perhaps it's time I spoke with my husband about the possibility of getting him one."
The boy, Kody, who looked to be no older than five or six yahren {year}, looked up at his mother with hope in his lavender-colored eyes. "Really, Mama? You'll talk to Daddy?"
"Yes, my precious," she said as she bent to look into his eyes. "I will talk to your daddy, but you must promise me that you will never leave my side again. Next time, it might not be a warrior you slam into. Mama wouldn't want anything to happen to her most precious treasure."
He nodded quickly. "I promise, Mama!" he cried happily, throwing himself into her arms. "I promise I won't leave your side ever again."
Roark had to chuckle as he watched them. "Well, since you're safe with your Mama again, I'll have to be going. You behave yourself, Kody, and the next time I see you, you can tell me all about your puppy."
"I will, Mr. Roark. Bye-bye."
"Bye now, Kody."
Siress Malcolm picked up her son, giving them all smiles. "Thank you again, Lt. Roark, Lt. Hadrian. Gentlemen."
"A very good afternoon to you, Siress Malcolm," Ethan told her with a smile.
Once the boy and his mother were well out of sight, Roark turned to see the look in his uncle's eyes. "Yes, Uncle?" he asked with an arched brow.
Apollo could only shake his head. "Nothing really, it's just...I think when the time is right, and you and this mystery lover of yours decide to settle down and get married, you'll make a wonderful father."
He shook his head. "We've a long way to go before that will be happening," he told him, his face flushing as the sudden picture of Rodolphus sitting at his side, he himself big with their unborn child filled his head. "We have an assignment to finish, a few secrets that are going to need to be revealed, and a possible Peace Conference to get through be--"
"One of those secrets being who your secret lover is, of course." Zac interrupted, head turning to look at Harry with an arched brow. "Yours too."
"Um..." came from them as they stopped at another booth, this one full of fruit.
"So, you said you found something in the Port Authority Archives this morning that you found to be odd."
"Odd would be an understatement," he answered, paying for the fruit and moving to the next booth, this one full of freshly baked bread. "I found an old report that survived the destruction. It was about a young woman named Leta Lestrange. She arrived on Aquaria with an infant no more than a few days old."
Harry frowned suddenly, picking out a couple of different loaves. "Odd indeed. Didn't they say they had no other relatives?"
A nod. "That they KNEW of."
"Hum? I wonder if she was related, and if she was, then how? A cousin, perhaps?"
"That's certainly a possibility, Colten. I didn't find any other reports that had survived, and there was no mention of what may have happened to the child she had with her. The Cylons attacked Aquaria a few days after the attack on Leo, and Leta was killed. When her body was pulled from the wreckage of the townhome she was renting, there was no other body found with her, so what happened to that baby? As Rodolphus and Rabastan obviously never knew she existed, we will very likely never know."
"Why would Rodolphus OR Rabastan mention any family to either of you?" Apollo asked, trying to understand how they knew. "Just as I'm quite sure the two of you don't discuss your personal lives with them whenever you run into them."
"Just because they've been hired to kill us, doesn't mean we don't ask questions of them, or they of us when they confront us. Rodolphus seems to find it a fun game to try and catch me off guard enough with his questions, to actually answer him. Which he has. I've just never been able to catch HIM off guard enough to answer mine."
A snort of amusement. "No more have I when Rabastan and I start playing twenty or more questions."
"Neither of you are afraid of them, are you?"
"No, but we ARE extremely wary of them'" Roark said as he saw a home goods booth and made a beeline for it.
"They are, after all, very deadly Terminators," Harry told them as he watched Roark begin to sort through some embroidery floss to replace what he was getting low on.
"Rory, this report...did it by any chance happen to mention from which Colony she came in from? Or if she was married or not?"
"Hum?" he had finished with the floss and was looking through patterns when the question Roan had asked registered. "OH! Yes, it did. Said she came off the refugee ship from Leo. The report also mentioned that she had told them she was a widow, her husband having been killed in the raids."
"Hum...I wonder..."
"Wonder what, Uncle?" Harry asked curiously.
"Well, it would have been eighteen yahren {year} ago, and I remember Dad telling me about the attacks on Leo and Aquaria. From the reports we heard, it was, by all accounts a bad one."
"It was," Ethan said quietly. "I remember Uncle Thorin coming home early. His face had been extremely pale as he gathered all of us together, telling us he had some bad news. He said that the Capitol City of Leo had just been attacked and was very badly damaged, He told us how the Solarian, who was stationed nearby answered their distress call."
"Oh my GOD!" Roark gasped suddenly, another bag on his arm. "That was when your father was so badly injured, wasn't it?"
"Yes, it was," Payton said. "There was a Cylon baseship just outside Leo's gravitational orbit. Dad was the Commander of the Solarian, who was, at that time, stationed near Leo. As he was off duty, he was planetside when the attacks began. It was his Second who made the decision, and sent word he was turning the Solarian to take on the Baseship. He knew the Pacifica and the Galactica were coming, so he hoped he could hold them off until they got there. He managed to destroy the Baseship, but the Solarian had taken severe damage in doing so."
"From what anyone could figure, the fire must have reached the solium {fuel} tanks, she blew just as they arrived," Colten said. "They built the Solaria shortly after that as a remembrance. Dad had been planet side because the young woman he had met and married had just given birth to their son."
"You know," Roan said suddenly looking thoughtful. "If I remember rightly, you yourself were only a few days old when that attack happened."
A grin. "Yes, and a tiny little thing according to all of you."
"And so you were. You were such an adorable baby when Lily and James brought you home to us. You were always so quiet, yet easily amused by the smallest of things, and you hardly ever cried. I remember making a promise the first time I held you."
"What promise would that be, Uncle Apollo?"
"That I would love you, protect you. No one was ever going to hurt you." He suddenly let loose a chuckle. "I remember a four yahren {year} old Harry demanding to hold his brother nearly as much as the rest of us."
Roark rolled his eyes. "Yes, and you've done an excellent job of that. HEY!" he said suddenly as a thought came to him. "Just think about this. What if I had been adopted? What if I hadn't been born on Caprica, but on Leo? I could be that long lost missing baby brother you lot have been so determined to find even though it's more than likely that he's dead."
