I've been counting the days ... been watching him from afar ... He's spent very little time outside and usually only when his Uncle is so tired of him that he's kicked out into the yard. Every time I see his face, I think he's going to break, snap completely and go on a rampage; then he drops wherever he is and sulks.
I understand ... I mean losing someone you think of as a father can be just as painful as losing the real deal. He hasn't talked to anyone. Hedwig flies out every once in a long while, but with no packages, no letters, and probably only to hunt.
Dumbledore thinks he will be fine once he's back at Grimmauld Place and among the only family he has come to know. I think Dumbledore's old brain has just about had it. The boy needs help ... only the boy isn't a boy anymore. He's a young man.
The summer break has been kind to him in some ways and a real bitch to him in others. He's gotten taller and from my vantage point he could be even taller than me by now. If he ever gets some decent food from time to time he's going to be a real lady killer.
I adjust the invisibility cloak and hopped down from the tree I'd been hiding in for the past two hours for a closer look at the young man sitting beside his house with his eyes closed and perpetually rumpled hair.
I think that's what attracted me to him in the first place ... um ... I mean what I liked about him in the first place, well, that and his room. Never did bode well to keep a spotlessly clean house; his room looks much like my apartment.
I look both ways before crossing the street, wearing the cloak and all; Muggles tend to drive over you if you don't.
I almost make it safely across, but forgot about the curb and tripped to the grass. I land and all the air pushed out of my lungs in a loud grunt.
"Hello, Tonks."
I look down and see my purple trainer sticking out from underneath the cloak. Busted.
After making sure I didn't bust a leg or something I approach and sit down beside him. "Wotcher, Harry. Guess I blew my cover, huh?"
He nodded and leaned his head back against the house to close his eyes again.
"Brill summer so far?"
He didn't move. "Same as every other."
I nod but I know he can't see me. "I hear it's your birthday today. Get to go over to Grimmauld Place tomorrow."
I'm fairly sure he heard me; he didn't respond.
"Happy birthday, Harry."
He face screwed up, and I saw the pain underneath. Before I even had a chance to ask what was wrong he jumped up and ran for the front door.
Way to go Tonks. Now get up off your butt and go make it better. Gotta get past the fat Muggle first though. After a moment I think of away and concentrated on my facial features and hair. The hair extended, from it's normal spikiness, to a darker shade of blue and I smoothed my cheeks for a younger look.
A little toning down of the breast area and I was sixteen again. there wasn't much I could do about the way I was dressed, a button down and jeans, but then again I shouldn't look too out of place. For good measure, I pulled the tails out of my jeans and tied them up, above my navel. Seems like I saw the girls nowadays showing a little more skin than I was used to.
I hid behind a large shrubbery and withdrew the cloak, folded it neatly and hid it so that nobody would be any wiser. Zipping around the bush and to the front door was the easiest thing I'd done today.
The fat Muggle opened the door after the third knock.
"Yes, what is it?" He looked me up and down then looked out around the street.
"Can I see, Harry."
His brow furrowed and a look in his eye was questioning me.
"I'm his girlfriend."
His eyes rolled back into his head. "You're not one of them are you?"
I gave a great look of confusion. "Them? Um .. I met Harry down at the playground. He hasn't said anything to you?"
He waved me inside. "Get in before the neighbors see you."
His Uncle pointed out the stairs. "He's up there. First door on the left. I don't want any sex going on up there either. I read the papers I know what you kids are doing these days."
I almost laughed. "Yes, sir. No sex."
I trotted upstairs before he could give me any other instructions. Harry was more attentive than his Uncle and answered on the first knock. The look of surprise on his face was almost worth the effort to change. And I'd bet a week's salary that he didn't know who I was until he caught sight of my trainers.
"Tonks?"
I pushed him inside his room and laid out a silencing charm throughout. Didn't want to be overheard by any stray Muggles or wizards that might be listening in.
"Hey," he said. "What's with the younger look?"
I raised an eyebrow at him. "You really think your Uncle is going to let a witch into his house voluntarily. I thought this would ease the way. I told him I'm your girlfriend."
He laughed out loud and I was glad I had put up the charm. "He'd never believe it. You're too beaut ... um, that is he'd never think you were my girlfriend."
What was that? Was he going to say beautiful? That's when I felt a tickling at measteast pocket.
I held up a finger. "One sec, Harry. I'm being contacted."
Withdrawing my compact I opened it up to the face of Albus Dumbledore. He raised an eyebrow at me.
"Wotcher, Professor."
"Tonks, is everything well?"
I nodded. "Sorta blew my cover and Harry saw me. I'm in his room right now."
He smiled. "And the reason for your ... youthful new look?"
I tried not to appear guilty. "Had to get past the Muggle. Said I was his girlfriend."
nvennventive thinking. May I speak to Harry?"
I passed the compact to Harry. He didn't look too happy to see the professor, not even bothering to say hello.
"Harry we will be withdrawing you from Privet Drive this evening."
"Why?" asked Harry and not in a friendly tone.
"There is a meeting tonight that I feel you should participate in, if you understand my meeting."
I watched as Harry's eyes almost lit up. "Are you serious? I thought ..."
"As I told you at the end of term. I will be keeping no more secrets from you, Harry. I feel that it is best if you are an active participant so that no more mistakes are made on my part and yours."
Harry nodded. "Okay."
"Please return the mirror to Tonks."
ook ook it back. "What do you want me to do, Professor."
"Stay with Harry until sundown then take the transportation that you used after Christmas break last year to the meeting place. Stay in disguise, I think I might have another use for you after the meeting."
"Understood," I answered.
The mirror returned to it's reflective guise and I returned it to my pocket. "That's it, Harry. You've got a girlfriend for the afternoon. So, wanna snog?"
I thought his eyes were going to bug out and his face turned a deep crimson. "Um ..."
I cuffed him on the shoulder. "I'm kidding, Harry."
At that, luckily a screech owl lit on the windowsill bearing two envelopes. Harry walked over an untied them from the owl's leg and gave it a treat from Hedwig's tray.
"Whatcha got?" I asked.
"Supply list from Hogwarts and something from ... what's a W.E.A.?"
I looked over his shoulder. "Blimey, Harry, it's your O.W.L. scores!" I said excitedly. "Open it up."
He tore open the letter and I tip-toed up over his shoulder to get a better look.

"Eight out of nine. Good job, Harry."
He frowned.
"What's the matter?" I asked.
"I got an Acceptabn pon potions. Snape only takes Outstanding's in his N.E.W.T. level courses. I can't be an Auror."
I didn't' know that was going to be his chosen field. Blast! "Maybe you can retake them. I mean with everything that was going on last year, they gotta let you retake them."
Harry shook his head. "Nah, I wasn't cut out to be an Auror anyway."
His face fell as he dropped the letter to the desk. "Bollocks! I've seen what you can do. You're a right fine candidate for Auror training."
He shook his head. "Thanks anyway, Tonks."
I'm messing this up. "You want to talk about it, Harry?"
He shook his head again and laid down on the bed. leaving his Hogwarts letter on the desk, unopened.
I took a seat on the chair at the desk and we waited for nightfall which, gladly, was only thirty minutes away. With his trunk packed, his broom attached, and Hedwig securely in his free hand we made our way downstairs.
Luckily his Muggles were out in the backyard for some reason. It couldn't have been for any exercise, that much was apparent. We were out the front and hailing the Knight Bus for a bouncy ride to Grimmauld Place.
I spotted Kingsley Shaklebolt at the corner looking inconspicuous as he kept an eye out for us. He set down his Muggle newspaper and raised his hand to us.
"Right on time."
I smiled. "Was there ever any doubt?"
He pulled out Dumbledore's Putter-Outer and clicked out the lights surrounding the square to aid in their entrance tot he Black Family Estate.
Ms. Weasley greeted them at the front door and ushered them inside. "Hello, Harry dear. Good to have you here again."
She noted that the portrait of Sirius' mother had been torched off the wall and we didn't have to be quiet anymore.
Harry stopped at the stairway. "Are Hermione and Ron here?"
She nodded. "I've sent them upstairs for the meeting, which is about to start, so off with you, downstairs."
I spelled his trunk and cage upstairs in front of the door so I wouldn't have to do it later. and made my way back down to the basement kitchen. Dumbledore was already at the head of the table beginning his speech, like he did every month.
"There have been no new developments in regards to Voldemort's loss of so many Death Eaters at the end of term. However I have come to believe that another design of his is somewhat imminent. With the continued foiling of his plots by Harry, it is of my opinion that Voldemort will make an attempt, if not several attempts on Harry's life this year. "
A couple of gasps were heard around the table. I, on the other hand, had wondered what was taking so long to get around to this theory. Killing Harry was about the smartest thing Voldemort could possibly do and he isn't a stupid man ... um ... whatever he is.
"That is why I think it is prudent to have our own plant inside of Hogwarts. Someone that can be by Harry's side at all times ... except when he is asleep of course."
I nodded my agreement. Good idea.
"We need someone with experience and training to protect him without causing any undue alarm among the students."
Really good idea. I wonder if there is anyone young enough to be able to pass as Harry's ... Oh, Bloody Hell!
Everyone's eyes were on me and my youthful disguise and I groaned. "I can't ... not school again. No insult implied, Harry."
He just smiled.
"Tonks, you are the obvious choice and speaking to you this afternoon gave me a rather ingenious idea."
I cringed at the thought.
"This term you will pose as a transfer student from the Bamberstam school in Hong Kong. Your cover story is that your family has moved into Little Winging, somewhat close to Privet Drive and you met Harry at a local club, or park, something of the like."
This was getting worse by the moment.
"You have developed a friend ship over the summer and have become ... involved."
Harry raised his hand. "Um ... are you saying Tonks is going to be my girlfriend?"
"Quite," he said thoughtfully. "Although I see the need for a different name and perhaps a few changes in your disguise, Tonks."
No ... not the school girl outfit again.
"Now, on to new business ..."
The meeting wore on with endless reports saying absolutely nothing until finally they ended with Dumbledore calling Harry and me to the side as everyone was Disapparating except for Remus and Molly.
Harry inched up looking red in the face as he did so.
"Tonks, I would prefer if you chose a more suitable hair color so as not to stand out in the crowd. We do not want people suspecting that you are in fact, you."
I chose my natural hair color of dark auburn and lightened my skin color for a more natural effect.
"Much better, and I will of course supply you with funds needed to acquire more contemporary clothing and supplies for your classes. You may accompany the Weasley's, along with Harry and Hermione to Diagon Alley tomorrow to guard over them while they also make their purchases."
I nodded.
"Any questions?"
Harry nodded. "Sir, I don't really think people will believe that Tonks is my girlfriend."
Dumbledore looked almost mirthful. "And why is that, Harry."
He looked at me and sidled up and whisper into Dumbledore's ear to which the headmaster responded.
"I assure you, Harry. Your fellow classmates will not think anything of the sort."
Harry didn't look reassured.
"Now I would suggest you two take the rest of the hour and acquaint yourselves with one another in the details of ... your relationship."
Dumbledore popped out of the kitchen with a 'good luck,' Har Harry and I sat down to work out the particulars. He was steadily getting redder by the moment.
"Well, I guess I need a new name. Got any favorites, Harry?"
He shook his head. I shrugged. "I always fancied Adara. It's in the same constellation as Sirius. It means Maiden."
Harry seem to appreciate the gesture.
"And how about Evans. That was your mum's maiden name wasn't it?"
He nodded.
"Great, Adara Evans it is."
That was the start. the conversation worked it's way out from there and before I knew it Harry was much more comfortable with me. This is a good thing seeing as we were supposed to be in puppy love and everything.
"Mind if I go see Ron and Hermione, now?" he asked.
I shrugged my shoulders. "Sure I guess we should get this over with."
His eyebrows furrowed. "Get what over with?"
I stood up and took his hand. ry Iry I'm your girlfriend now. I do everything you do and that means getting to know your friends as well."
He looked down at her hand holding his and the redness came back to his cheek.
"See, you're blushing. Can't have any of that at school now can we. You have to be comfortable with me Harry ... holding hands ... snogging in the hallways, you know, boyfriend, girlfriend stuff."
