Prologue

It was destined to be a wedding that was talked about for a long time to come.
Not surprisingly, the groom-to-be doted on his future wife, and the bride-to-be was clearly deeply in love with her future husband.
But the enthusiasm about the marriage pretty much ended there.
Arthur and Molly Weasley, generally considered to be easy-going where it concerned their children, could not believe that any daughter of theirs would actually want to marry into “that family”, while Lucius Malfoy was horrified that his only son would want to marry a Weasley.
Hermione had known about the announcement long before anyone else did. Ginny was her best friend, even though they had precious little time to spend together, between Hermione’s research for the Ministry of Magic, and Ginny’s lectures on Muggle Appreciation. Ginny had kept her informed on the relationship, which had started shortly after Draco’s parents had been thrown in Azkaban. When Narcissa had later died in prison, Ginny had been there for Draco, and the relationship had progressed. Still neither one of them had felt the need to tell their parents about the other until they were certain in their feelings for one another.
When the wedding announcement was made, Molly and Arthur had tried to put on a positive face, while they privately wondered where they had gone wrong with their daught.
Lucius Malfoy’s reaction was not so understanding. He had ranted and raved at Draco for hours, threatening personal deprivations, bodily harm, and finally disinheritance. Ultimately, a dispassionate silence replaced the yelling, and Draco finally returned to his flat in London, finding more and more excuses to not return to his ancestral home. Lucius was usually to be found in the library with a glass of brandy in his hand.
About a month after the difficult meeting with his father, Draco was surprised to get a visit from his father. Lucius startled his son by not only giving his blessing to the union, but also by insisting on hosting the wedding and a large reception.
In truth, Lucius’ decision was only partially based on the realization that his only son and heir was going to get married regardless of his father’s consent. Indeed, it had finally dawned on Lucius that the Weasley family, despite their enduring poverty, possessed the one thing that the Malfoy family had lost with the fall of Voldemort, and had not yet been able to regain: respectability.
When Lucius recognized that the marriage of his son to a Weasley would send the message that the Malfoy family was not as repugnant as people thought them to be, he was fully supportive of the wedding. Yes, his son had turned out to be somewhat useful, after all.
The Weasleys were admittedly reluctant to let Lucius host the wedding and the reception, but when he insisted that it had been Narcissa’s most fervent dream to see Draco married at the Malfoy estates, they relented. Arthur muttered uncharitably about Lucius’ motives to hold a large reception, but he muted his opinions when in hearing range of his daughter, as she was happy to see that the two families were attempting to get along.
