Phoebe sighed, placing the Book of Shadows in the sacred place designated as the Sanctuary room.
“I can’t believe we let Dumbledore and Giles talk us into this,” she said to Paige, as they gave the room one final look and orbed down to the staff room.
“I still can’t believe we’re allowing Muggles to teach at a school for witchcraft and wizardry,” Severus Snape said in a cold voice.
“Remember, Severus,” Remus Lupin said gently, “These are no ordinary Muggles. They’ve been fighting evil for years.”
"Which is highly irrelevant to the issue at hand," Severus said, staring icily at Remus. " The issue would appear to be, are they capable of teaching magic to impressionable students, when they are not part of our world?"
“And what’s so wrong with being a Muggle?” Gunn asked, glaring at the man. “Maybe I can’t wave around some little stick and make things happen, but you couldn’t last two seconds on the street, man. Especially not in L.A., with Xurk’sworg beasts running left and right, and all the teeth comin’ atcha at night.” Severus' stare promised that Gunn might soon consume a potion that would do all types of nasty things to his internal structure. Gunn glared back, promising pain, much physical pain and ass kicking complete with axe.
“Whoa whoa whoa,” Piper said, holding her hands out. “Okay, the teachers will NOT be killing each other, okay? Or am I going to have to blow some people up here?”
"I highly doubt whether you could accomplish that," Severus said. Gunn shrugged slightly.
"If whiter shade of pale over there will back up, it'll all be good."
"Muggle."
"Dress wearing pansyass."
"It's a robe."
"Looks like a dress." Before Gunn could further dig himself into a pit of magical revenge, Wesley and Giles entered, speaking in a language nobody else recognized.
"Please pay attention, everyone," Giles said after he gained everyone's attention. “We have one week to get everything shipshape before the students start to arrive. Everybody have their class assignments?” All of the staff nodded.
“All right, then get settled in, and start arranging your classrooms.”
Oz came into the room, ambling along lazily. This week, his hair was a bright shade of red with electric blue tips. "Am I late?" he asked.
“Not terribly, Oz. Everybody, this is Daniel Osbourne, otherwise known as Oz. He’ll be assisting Ms. Matthews with Care of Magical Creatures.”
Oz stiffened slightly and turned to stare at Remus. Severus watched the silent battle of wills with an interested eye as Remus and Oz stared at each other. The air in the room felt almost toick ick to breathe as Oz slowly walked over to the other werewolf.
"Oz."
"Call me Remus."
They shook hands, nostrils slightly widened. The muscian uttered a thoughtful little hum, then walked back over to stand near Giles. Remus rubbed his jaw slightly, still gazing at Oz. Something had been decided. While neither were going to submit to the other, neither were they going to fight. Oz quirked the side of his mouth up slightly and Remus smiled back. Giles breathed a sigh of relief.
"Since Severus already knows the responsibilites of a house master, he will be taking over that position for Kalfu," Giles started, looking around at the adults or near adults assembled there to teach the students of the new wizarding school at New Orleans. "Wesley will be assuming the position of house master for Legba, Buffy for Ogoun and Phoebe for Damballah."
"Just a question, what are the names from?" Gunn asked. "Cos that is some freaky shit, English."
"They're the names of four loas, spirit beings worshipped in the Vodoun religion," Wesley said. "They each have certain. . . characteristics. And also as this school is being constructed on a magical center with a long history, it seemed fitting to tie the school into that magical tradition."
"So, China," Spike said, from the corner where he was smoking quietly. "When's everyone else arriving?"
"Soon, I think," Giles said. "The students will be arrg ing in two weeks, and all the professors will be in place by then. I would suggest you use this period of grace to organize class schedules and familiarize yourself with the grounds." He smiled wryly.
"Here are the symbols for each house." Wesley said. "For Kalfu, a red crescent moon on a black background; Damballah, a coiled green snake on a blue background; for Ogoun, a sword upraised in a red fist on a gold background; and for Legba, a black crossroads against a green background."
Fred, though while listening, did not appear to be doing so. In fact, everyone seemed a little amused to watch the small waif chattering about polynomials to a small potted plant. Willow grinned at the girl who made her babble reflex resemble Oz. Wesley smiled as he remembered walking into Fred’s Arithmancy classroom earlier. The walls were already covered in codes, formulas and equations.
“All right,” Giles began again, waiting for everyone to look back at him. “Now, the Charmed ones, Willow, and Amy are all proficient in wandless magic, and Wesley and myself can hold our own. But, to help us be ready to teach students who have all grown up around purely wand magic, Professor Lupin and Professor Snape will be training those of us who show magical ability in how to use wands.” Severus looked bored.
"And if any of you can manage to actually grasp it. . . not that I place much faith in a lot of silly wand waving anyway." Remus sighed slightly.
"You know, I didn't think anyone could outbrood his Mighty Mousseness, but there he is," Spike said. Severus shot a look of complete loathing at Spike.
"Can someone remind me why we have two walking corpses on the staff?" Buffy glared at him.
“I’ll have you know that both of these ‘walking corpses,’ as you so eloquently put it, are better men than you will ever be.”
"And a little girl such as yourself knows so much of life?" Snape inquired with a raised eyebrow. Spike snickered as Buffy straightened, glaring at the sardonic wizard.
"Oh, are you in for it. Twat."
"Despite the infantile namecalling, *demon*, I have far more important things to be doing then exchange insults with someone who uses a household cleaning product to turn his hair white," Snape said, rising from his chair. "Such as actually preparing for the classes we have to teach. How in the name of Salazar Dumbledore decided *any* of you would be fit to teach. . . excluding Giles, of course."
"While I appreciate the thought Severus, this is not the best way to start off the school year," Giles replied.
Severus smiled slightly. "Trust me when I say there is no good way." He inclined his head slightly, then left the room in a billow of black robes.
"Where does he get off calling me a little girl?!" Buffy demanded in a furious voice. "I'll, gah, Giles, are you sure he's human?! ’Cause if he isn't I can hurt him, right?"
"I went to school with him, and as far as I know he's human," Remus said. "A prat and a suspicious bastard who I think sold his mother for dog food, but human." Remus chuckled at the thought. “Oh, Rupert, have the students received their Chambreloa letters yet?”
“We just sent the owls out yesterday, so they should be getting them soon.” With a few more words, everybody set out to get the school ready for the coming students.
