CHAPTER 1:
1996
Warm water
came running out of the marble taps, cascading against the bottom of the white
bathtub, and a pleasant perfume of lavender was filling the bathroom. As the
water reached the top of the tub, it stopped pouring by itself. Hermione
slipped out of her bathrobe and let out a contented sigh as she lowered herself
into the lukewarm water. This was her first bath in the private bathroom that
came with the position of Head Girl. Not that she minded having to have shared
her space in the previous six years of her high school carrier, but she
couldn’t deny that having some private space felt rather nice. But as much as
some breathing space can be good to a person, she couldn’t help but to feel a
bit secluded now she had a room away from Gryffindor tower. The only company
she had now was the one of the Head Boy: Draco Malfoy.
She grunted as she thought about the prospect of having to sleep in a room next
to him the entire year, and share a common room with him no less. She grabbed a
bottle of pink shampoo and started washing her hair. Like herself, Malfoy had been a Prefect for two years and it had been a
constant power struggle between the two of them. Hermione assumed this would
even increase now they both had the most influential positions a student in
this school could attain. He was always picking a fight with her for some
stupid reason. Sometimes it even seemed he was looking for reasons to
pester her. In fact; the boy was just tiresome. Now he wasn’t going to have to
look far for reasons to taunt her with since they had to work together
frequently from now on. This was going to be a long year.
“What the...?” she uttered in surprise as she noticed the result
of her spell. The fogginess went away, but something was definitely wrong. Her
reflection had vanished too. In a reflex she touched her face to check if she
was still there. She was. She looked down at her body. Yep,
all there. She looked back into the mirror and noticed something else.
Her bathroom door was closed, but the one in the reflection was ajar. She had a
faint idea about what this could mean, but couldn’t be sure. She walked out of
the bathroom and went into her bedroom. She walked up to the wall on her left,
that was fully hung with large square mirrors like in a dancing studio (this
was rather odd and tacky, but she didn’t think about questioning the interior
design when she was given her own private room). She pointed her wand at the
wall and repeated the spell.
“Clearificus.”
Hermione
gasped as she saw the result. She just created a huge look-in hole into Draco Malfoy’s bedroom. No, not a hole, it was like she just
removed the entire wall. She carefully brought her hand towards the mirror to
feel if it was still there. Thankfully, it was.
She jumped
up as she heard a door slam. Malfoy walked into his
bedroom with his nose in a book. Hermione panicked as she realised she was
still only in her underwear. Was this spell two-ways? Shit! Shit! Shit!
She ran back into the bathroom to put her pyjamas on. How did this happen? It
was a simple drying spell she used. How on earth was she going to explain this?
Fully clothed she carefully peeked around the corner before she walked back
into her room. Malfoy didn’t let out a peep as she
walked past him; didn’t even look up. Nope, he couldn’t see her. What should
she do? Tell him? Warn him not to do anything he wouldn’t do when other people
were in the room? Hermione contemplated on this for a moment. Something inside
of her decided against that. She would never get to hear the end of it. He
would never believe this was unintentional. Or perhaps he would, but pester her
about it as if he didn’t. She glared at the Slytherin
who was busy untying his shoes and oblivious of her presence.
It was late
and she was tired, so she decided to figure this all out in the morning.
Tomorrow was a Saturday so she had all the time in the world to try and find a
counter curse. As Malfoy moved around his room she
realised she could also hear him quite clearly, as if their
was no wall between them. Could he hear her back? She decided it was
best to put that to the test. She carefully picked up one of her shoes and
threw it against the wall with a ‘THUD’. No reaction. Hermione felt a little
more at ease at the apprehension that she wouldn’t have to tiptoe around the
place. She grunted when she became aware of something else. Her bed was placed
against the wall adjoining Malfoy’s and so was his.
And now, with the wall ‘removed’ it looked like the beds were almost pushed
together, neglecting the 20 centimetres where the wall would be. Hermione told
herself to ignore it. It’s only for one night. She crawled under the sheets and
muttered a spell to turn off the lights. The lights on Malfoy’s
side were still on, which had a slightly weird effect when the ones in
Hermione’s room were turned off.
Who would
have put that spell up? And why? Did someone do
this to pester her? No, probably not. It did seem like quite an odd way to play
a trick on someone. No, it must be something else. Hermione sighed. She’d
figure that all out when the spell was lifted, which was her priority now. She
closed her eyes, tried to faze out the racket Malfoy was making, and go to sleep. She froze when she heard sheets ruffling on
Draco’s side. He was getting into bed. She felt an urge to punch his lights out
for it, but she couldn’t because she knew he wasn’t doing anything wrong... and
because she would hit her fist against the wall. Merlin, this was weird. Why
did it have to be him? This wouldn’t be so awkward if it was Harry... or
Ron... or anyone else for that matter. She reckoned she must have done
something awful in a previous life.
“Karma sucks,” were
the last words running through her drowsy mind before she drifted off into
sleep.

As Hermione woke up the next morning she was still slightly dazed and
didn’t immediately remember the mess she was in. She was quickly reminded when
she heard Malfoy’s monotonous breathing. She was used
to sleeping in a room with four other girls, so she was familiar with hearing
sounds like this in the morning. But this was different in a way. He sounded
different.
