Out of lurking and into the fire...my first attempt at fanfiction. I need a beta and feedback as to whether you want to see this story develop or not. I love Gone with the Wind and Hermione/Snape fanfiction so this little foray into mixing the two seemed like a natural to me. However, due to the time period differences it may be a little tricky at times to do both Gone With the Wind and the Harry Potter universe justice. But I will try! Enjoy and helpful reviews are super appreciated!
Hermione Granger was not beautiful, but people seldom noticed it when caught by her charm as the Weasley twins were. In her face were too sharply blended the rosy-cheeked innocence of a young girl and the fierce knowledge of an over-ambitious head girl. Her hair, smoothed into ringlets by charms, was clipped back and held in place with ribbons and her cinnamon eyes danced merrily as the Weasley twins sought to enlist her help in another product for their shop. Seated with Fred and George Weasley on the balcony that was above Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes, on the first Hogsmeade weekend of her seventh year, she made a pretty picture. She had grown into a slender young woman with high pert breasts and long legs that were still tanned and toned from a summer spent enjoying time outdoors with her family.
Fred and George lounged easily on either side of her trying to convince her to help them with a potion they needed to develop for their latest prank. Hermione, for her part, had learned in the past two years the fine art of bewitching people with a pretty smile that hinted at the knowledge stored just below the surface. Whereas for the first five years of her Hogwarts’ career she had been insistent in her efforts to make people listen to her vast stores of information, she was now quite happy to smile in a way that conveyed she knew what everyone else wanted to know and she might be willing to tell. She developed this new strategy and implemented it so slyly that boys like the Weasley twins never knew what hit them – they only knew that they had overlooked a pretty, talented witch for five years and were intent on making up for lost time now.
It was with these aims that Fred and George were trying to get Hermione to research the theory behind the potion needed for their latest prank. Ideally, this potion would be used at the upcoming Halloween party at Hogwarts, which the twins planned on attending on the arm of Hermione Granger.
“Come on Hermione, when have you ever been able to say no to advanced potions theory?” asked George. “And besides, you said yourself that every Halloween ball that Hogwarts has had has been an exercise in boredom”
“I just don’t know boys, I don’t know what makes you think I am up to this sort of task in so little time – why, there are only four weeks until Halloween and I still haven’t decided what I am going to wear” said Hermione. “Anyway, I don’t know if we should work on a potion that gives everyone a Halloween costume based on their personalities and traits.”
“Sure you do, Hermione, it will be brilliant! And think we’ll finally get to see everyone for who they really are – and that will mean we’ll have an advantage in the upcoming war with you-know-who” said Fred.
“Oh, please, don’t start that again. You know that there won’t be a war, why, Dumbledore is working day and night with the Order to make sure that Voldemort is brought down without a confrontation that could risk so many lives,” said a bored Hermione. It wasn’t that she didn’t think the effort to rid the wizarding world of Voldemort once and for all was a good one, it was merely that when one had heard nothing but Voldemort this and Voldemort that for 6 years due to friendship with Ron and Harry that person tended to get very bored with such conversations. Besides, she wanted to get back to more important discussions, namely Halloween.
“Not going to be a war!” cried George. “Well, of course there’s going to be a war. But you need not fret about it, not with good wizards on your side like the Weasleys”
“He’s right, Hermione, hell, there are almost enough Weasleys to take down you-know-who without anyone else’s help” said Fred “Of course, we’ll let others help so they can be heroes and get some of the girls too. Never let it be said that the Weasleys aren’t thoughtful blokes”
“Fiddle-dee-dee, get the girls indeed, we’ll see who the real heroes are. They’ll be the ones working on potions and such for the Order to take Voldemort down without a fight” said Hermione.
“Speaking of potions, what do you say to our plan?” Two sets of expectant eyes looked to her.
“Well, I don’t know boys…it’s so much work and I do have NEWTs to think about…”
“Come on, Hermione, you can’t fool us, you’ve been prepared for your NEWTs since you stepped of the Hogwarts express at the beginning of your first year!” said George. “And if you do we’ll tell you a secret!”
“If it’s what we heard at the last Order meeting you know we can’t,” warned Fred.
“Why not, we learned it using extendable ears, so they can’t even trace it to us if it does get out” said George.
“Yeah, but it might mess up the Order’s plan and we don’t want to be responsible for that” said Fred.
Intrigued by what the twins may have found out, Hermione felt the need to step in. “Fred, George, you both know me better than that. I’m not like some of these gossipy girls at school, I can keep a secret.”
“Well, alright, you promise you won’t tell?” asked Fred.
Hermione didn’t even see that it was necessary to answer, choosing instead to fix him with an exasperated half glare.
George stepped in before Hermione’s half glare could turn to a full glare. “Draco is to wed Pansy Parkinson over Christmas break! His father was getting suspicious, and what with his value to the Order and all, Dumbledore had to think fast to find a way to cement Lucius’ trust in Draco. What better way than for him to marry a pureblood--and a pureblood from such a wealthy family at that.”
Hermione felt her stomach clench into a tight knot. Draco was going to marry Pansy? No, that couldn’t be, not when she had just realized how much she fancied him. And she knew he felt the same way! Why, didn’t he always seek her out at Order meetings? Didn’t he make it a point to find her when she went on evening walks by the lake? OH! How could he be marrying Pansy?
