Down a dark corridor
Was where I first saw
The truth about you and I
And where we touched
Shared forbidden kisses and such
All along where the shadows lie
Down a Dark Corridor: Part 1/?
Down a dark corridor it began, on a boring Wednesday afternoon after I told Malfoy to go to hell. I was heading out of my 7th year Potions class after meeting with Professor Snape about my grades. Apparently, if I don't get top marks on the next test, he said there will be no hope for me. Whatsoever. Period. I would not be graduating with the rest of my friends come June.
Wonderful.
So you can imagine the black mood I was in as I stormed out of the classroom; black robes swirling furiously around my legs. Was it my fault that Snape was such an asshole about assignments? I tried, I really did! I was so lost in my thoughts that I almost ran into the one person besides Snape and Voldemort that I didn't want to see.
"Watch where you're going, Scarface!"
"Go to hell, Ferret Boy!" I snarled in return, veering off onto a dimly lit unfamiliar hall. I was not in the mood to be fucked with. Of course, he being the devil spawn that he was, sensed this and followed me as I strode purposefully down another random, dark dungeon corridor. Where the fuck was I?
"Make me, Potter."
Suddenly I stopped. I simply couldn't deal with him and his bullshit anymore. It was getting to be ridiculous. I guess I just snapped. I whirled around abruptly and swung my fist towards his pale, smug face. As I landed the blow, I immediately felt bad. It's not my nature to just go off and physically attack people--even if they are bastards like Draco Malfoy.
"Ah!" He cried out in agony, and fell backwards clutching his nose. He landed hard on his ass and skidded slightly. Damn, I didn't think I hit him that hard. To my utter shock and horror, he started crying. Not loud, obnoxious tears, but silent, accusatory ones. He glared at me with boiling hatred emanating from his icy eyes. A thin trickle of blood dripped from his nose.
"I hate you, Potter! I fucking hate you so much!"
"Well," I sputtered defensively. "If you weren't always harassing me maybe I wouldn't have had to go off on you like that! You brought this on yourself you know."
He was on his feet like a shot and before I could react, he'd returned the favor. It was my turn to nurse my bruised cheek and my trembling fingers prodded gently at the broken skin. However, he wasn't finished. He fell upon me like a wild animal and started punching me relentlessly. I brought my hands up to block most of his blows, but I still felt a well aimed punch from time to time.
"Stop it, Malfoy! What the fuck is wrong with you? Get off...get off of me!"
"Hate you, hate you, hate you" He babbled incoherently; tears still streaming from his silver eyes. "Always better, always looking down your perfect little nose..."
I had no idea what he was talking about, and I didn't want to know. I just shoved him off of me and he landed in a tangled heap against the wall. He lay there panting harshly, his features twisted in a weird sort of grimace.
"Hate you" He whispered brokenly. "So much."
"I got that much, Malfoy. You don't have to keep repeating it."
"Fuck you!" He shouted, the crazed look coming back into his eyes again. I backed up a step. Maybe he was finally losing it. Ron always said that he thought Malfoy was a little off his rocker. Perhaps it had finally happened and the blonde Slytherin had cracked.
Somehow, deep down, I knew the answer wasn't as simple as that.
Hesitantly, I stepped over to my fallen enemy and stood above him watching silently. He stared back at me with hooded gray eyes for a moment until he exhaled with a shudder and closed his eyes. All the fight seemed to have gone out of him.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked, curious. I knew I should just walk away, but I couldn't help it. Somehow, I knew I had to ask him. We were bound together whether we liked it or not. By hatred, by jealousy, it didn't matter. We would always be a part of each other's lives. It was just the way things were. So it didn't surprise me when I felt a smidge of concern wash over me and I settled down on the cold, stone floor next to his prone body.
"Why do you care?" He snapped back, angry again. So much hostility in one boy. So much hate. What did I ever do to deserve this treatment? I wanted to ask him, but I was afraid of Malfoy's answer.
"I don't. " I shot back, irritated with his attitude. I was trying to be nice here! "Sorry I asked." I stood up to leave when I heard him speak.
"Wait."
"Why the fuck should I? Face it, Malfoy. It will be the same as it always is. You'll do something to piss me off. I'll retaliate and we'll just continue on in circles until one of us kills the other." I sighed heavily. "Personally, I'm tired of all that bullshit. Aren't you?"
He shrugged, sat himself up against the wall and drawled, "Possibly."
I hesitated again and finally sat back down next to him, resigned to my fate. I must be really bored to even attempt conversation with my worst enemy. I mean, why else would I be sitting here in the middle of this deserted hallway with Draco Malfoy?
We sat in silence for a bit and nursed our wounds. My cheek was bleeding, as was his nose. Finally the quiet got to me. I had to know.
"Why do you hate me, Malfoy?"
He didn't answer for quite some time, and I began to wonder if he hadn't heard me, when he finally spoke in a voice laced with bitterness. "I hate you, Potter, because when I asked for your hand in friendship, you turned me down."
"You had just insulted Ron!" I protested and he glared at me.
"Shut up! You asked and I'm telling, so you just shut the fuck up, Potter!" He calmed down slightly when I closed my mouth with an audible snap. I continued to shoot poisonous looks his way, however. "I hate you," He continued in a louder voice, "Because you chose Ron Weasley over me. I hate you, Potter, because afterwards you two just dismissed me as if I wasn't worth squat!"
I could not believe that this is why I had to endure so many years of torment from this boy. Because I ignored his hand of friendship? Surely I couldn't have been that important to him, right? Despite my confusion, I found myself growing furious. "You were being an asshole that day, Malfoy! What? Did you want me to be your friend when you were throwing insults at Ron and his family?"
"You should have stayed out of it!" He snapped. "It wasn't your fucking battle to begin with, Potter. So what if Weasley and I hate each other? So what if our families have a long standing feud? That had nothing to do with you, so you should have minded your own business!"
"Well we see things differently, Malfoy, because I was already Ron's friend and, to me, being someone's friend means being loyal to that person. Maybe you should look up the word 'friend' in the dictionary and see what it means. Then maybe you'll get some of your own."
My words were harsh and I knew it, causing him to visibly wince. "I know what it means! And I bloody well would have a friend if you hadn't rejected me back in our first year!" He leaped to his feet in a rage. "Fuck you, Potter! You think you're so much better than the rest of us. You think you're so special because you have a bloody scar on your forehead. Well, fuck that. You want to know the real reason I hate you? You want to know why I can't sleep at night? Why I'm always harassing you?" He suddenly slumped as if exhausted. "Because I can't stop...." He trailed off abruptly and looked at the floor. His face scrunched up as if he was going to cry. I was alarmed. I was used to Malfoy a certain way. I didn't like this new version of him that I was seeing. It was odd.
"Because you can't stop what?" I whispered, as though not to startle him.
"I can't...stop." He said in a pleading voice; his silver gray eyes angry and resentful. "I can't stop thinking about you."
I didn't know what to say. I was speechless. What was he trying to tell me? "Malfoy..." I got up and took a step forward, to do what I wasn't sure, when he stumbled back further.
"You stay away from me, Potter." He hissed. "I don't need your fucking pity. I'll kill you first, do you hear me? I'll fucking kill you!"
And before I could blink, he was gone.
