Chapter 1

In retrospect, Professor Severus Snape realized he really should have known better. The odds were just stacked against him. It was less than two weeks till N.E.W.T.s (he would likely never have to see any of those hopeless dunderheads again), Voldemort was gone (defeated by the most aggravating dunderhead of them all, Potter), and nothing had gone wrong in any of his Potions classes all week. Things were going all together too well.

So what did Severus do in face of such obvious oncoming disaster? He assigned an excruciatingly complex potion to his Advanced Potions class, allowing them to work in pairs of their own choice. It should have been no surprise that Know-It-All Granger would team up with Know-Nothing Longbottom. This particular memory potion would allow a mediwitch (or wizard), to enter the mind of a trauma patient and altar the memories in such a way that the knowledge of the event would still remain, but it would be distanced and therefore blunted. In the aftermath of the war there were dozens of students who were suffering from visions of classmates dieing, the aftereffects of the Cruciatus curse, and other tortures no child should ever have to suffer. The potion was a controlled substance of course. It created a bond between the two users, one which could be obviously used in a detrimental fashion by less than scrupulous individuals.

The potion itself relied on a physical bond, then an incantation. It was activated by touching the individual that had consumed it, then the telepathic bond was initiated by the incantation, the physical bond augmenting it. It began with a Draught of Living Death base, to which was added essence of hellebore and powdered moonstone, the active ingredients in the Draft of Peace. The result of this base was to put the patient into a sort of deep tranced tod to prevent panic when the memories were forced to the surface. Finally, after the base had simmered for an hour, over low heat, fluxweed, gathered at the new moon, was added to create the bridge for the incantation.

Severus had no real hope that any of these potions would turn out correctly, except maybe Granger's and Malfoy's, but if even one vial was produced correctly, it was less work he would have to do for Poppy.

Granger and Longbottom had reached the l stl stage of their potion. In fact, probably due to Granger's hyper-organization, they were a full forty-five minutes ahead of Malfoy and Zabini, who were just now entering into the simmering stage. Severus noticed Granger leaning over to give Longbottom instructions. He approached her to berate her for helping her hapless classmate, realizing only as he reached her that as he had allowed them to work in pairs there was nothing he could rightfully do about it.

It was apparent however, that Miss Granger was not above using the opportunity to her advantage. "Professor!" She exclaimed, looking up at him and smiling. The girl had to be the only student in a decade to have the temerity to smile in his class. Smirk maybe, but never smile. "I actually have a question," she continued, "about the effects of the phase of the moon on the fluxweed?"

Seeing no reason not to answer her, he began answering her questions in the shortest way possible, while keeping a half an eye on Longbottom, as he returned from getting the fluxweed from the supply cabinet. He continued answering her seemingly unending questions, as Longbottom began to mince the fluxweed. Seeing no apparent error in Longbottom's technique, Severus allowed himself to be drawno tho the discussion with Granger. Despite himself, Severus found himself enjoying the discussion; Granger's leaps of logic impressing him greatly, though he wouldn't admit it under pain of Crucio. A movement seen out of the corner of his eye, alerted him to his impending doom.

"Longbottom! You-" Severus got no further before the cauldron's contents exploded in a mass of sea-foam green. Granger stepped back into him in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the spray. As they were both bathed in the potion, Severus was startled by her had grasping his for support before releasing it just as quickly. Severus quickly pushed her away from him, growled out a terse evanesco and yelled "Class dismissed!"

There was a great rush as students placed stasis charms on their cauldrons, returned equipment to the storage area, and practically ran from the room, all afraid of being caught in the fallout of Severus' rage. As soon as all but Granger and Longbottom were gone, he rounded on them. "Well, Mr. Longbottom," Severus practically hissed, "Care to share exactly why you decided it was necessary to add the fluxweed a whole five minutes early?"

Longbottom looked ready to faint. "N-no, sir. I-I m-mean, I f-f-forgot, sir."

Severus drew a steadying breath, "Get out of my sight." He finally ground out, pointing to the door, "And fifty points from Gryffindor for gross incompetence," Severus turned his attention to Granger, "I can't rightfully find any fault with you, Miss Granger. However, as his partner, you should have been paying attention to what he was doing. Therefore, you have detention with me tonight after dinner to make up this potion."

"Yes, sir," Granger mumbled. She turned to leave, stopping as if jerked just under three feet away from him. "Um, sir?"

"What is it, Miss Granger?"

"I can't seem to go any farther, sir."

He should have just stayed in bed.

A/N: Okay here are the rules for the Bound Challenge on WIKTT:
Bound Challenge

Due to an unfortunate mistake made in potions Hermione and Snape are magically bound and can��t go more than a few feet from each other. How will they ever learn to live together?

CHALLENGE REQUIREMENTS:

*Neville (or another ��dunderhead��) makes a boo-boo in potions and the result is a magical bond between Hermione and Severus.

*They cannot go more than a few feet from each other. (max. 10 ft; min�K 10 inches??) (�Kjust had a really strange vision of them being actually fused together)

*They could try to hide it from the rest of the school (how is beyond me) but that is up to you.

*A bet goes around about who will kill who first, or some such thing. All houses (and staff?) involved.

*This is preferably after the war (makes things so much less complicated)

*And what would a Severus/Hermione story be without smut?

*Hermione has to be of age (Preferably 18)

OPTIONAL: (try to use as many as you can though!!)

*Someone asks Malfoy for his autograph and then says ��Oh, they don��t give you an award or anything for being the biggest prick on the planet?�� (I don��t know why I��ve always wanted to hear that)

*H & S having a loud, very rude argument in very public place.

*Someone catches Goyle and/or Crabbe in a broom closet (or dark corner, or empty classroom, etc.) with Filch and/or Mrs. Norris (if you would prefer a female �� )

*Hermione being a nagging mother to Snape (Eat your veggies! Tie your shoe before you trip! Don��t run with pointy things!)

*A very drunk Neville hits on an equally drunk Trelawney/McGonagall

*��And the winner is�K�KCrookshanks?��
