You’re so beautiful…
Draco bolted upright from a tangle of blankets. Sweat trailed down his brow, the canopy of his bed was too close for comfort. He took a deep breath before he realized where he was. This was Hogwarts, he breathed, this was safe.
He swung his legs over the side of his bed and gripped it with both hands. The dreams were coming more often now. Draco could feel his father waiting patiently for him to let down his guard, to become what Lucius had always dreamed of.
No. Lucius was dead. “He can’t touch me.” Draco whispered to himself.
He saw Crabbe shift in his sleep, his snores permeating in the room. He felt a pervading sense of unease before he took it to himself to get off his bed and go down to the common room. He would have to be alone now, and get away from his doltish classmates.
He got up and examined his bed. The blankets were still in a tangle, but he didn’t correct it. His shirt was off somewhere in a corner, and he didn’t bother to find another one. He walked barefoot to the door and shouldered it open.
Cool air met him on the other side. The window in the corridor was open. Draco walked tentatively toward it, and leaned out to breathe fresh air and ease his nerves. The effect was calming, he immediately forgot about his dream.
After a few minutes, he spotted a dark figure moving from the castle. It was nearly a shadow, but it carried a broomstick. Draco instantly recognized that gait. Harry.
Harry mounted his broom and kicked off the side of the lake. The water rippled in deep, black circles, edging onto shapelessness. Harry was off to one side of the lake, swirling his feet around the water and gently ascending into air.
The night became suddenly more crisp before Draco realized he had been leaning out of the window so far as to be nearly falling out. He shivered slightly, but did not bring himself back inside the castle. It was such a perfect moment.
Harry looped around the lake a few times before leaning close to his broom and bolting across the sky. He looked like a shadowy blur, zigzagging through imaginary obstacles. He watched as Harry came closer to the castle, turning up sharply and flying against the wall. He was coming closer.
Closer. Draco wished fervently, before shutting the thought out of his head. It would not do to find them alone again.
But he came closer, and closer… and closer, until there was very little separating them but the window. Draco blinked. How had Harry known?
Harry blinked his eyes to focus, and smiled. He wasn’t wearing his glasses. Draco continued to stare, his body half out the window. There was a moment he thought he would jump out to meet Harry, but he controlled himself from going that far.
“Fly with me?” Harry asked, with a hopeful expression on his face. Is this why he had come out here? As if he knew Draco would be looking out this window at this exact time.
Draco didn’t respond, but just looked at himself as the answer. He was too cold - already shivering - and he didn’t have a shirt. And sitting that close to Harry wouldn’t do at all.
“No?” Harry smiled. He knew he had his answer. He sat upright and held out his hand.
Draco sighed and took it. The entire ol kol knew anyway. He gracefully leapt from the window’s edge to land smoothly on the broom, in front of Harry. He was covered in something woolly and warm. He turned around to find Harry without his cloak.
“Don’t get me wrong, I lit wht when you shiver,” Harry explained, “Just not from the cold.”
Harry pressed against Draco’s back, pushing his body down to hug the broom, and leaned down to collect speed. They wound through trees and much of the forbidden forest. Draco bent his head back and smiled at Harry fondly. This might not be so bad.
~~~~~~~
They set down in the middle of the forbidden forest. Draco shivered from fear, rather than cold. Neither of them forgot their first time alone in the forest, during their first year. Harry took his hand and led him to a wide clearing.
Draco gasped, “How is this in the middle of the forest?”
“Don’t know, but I found it a couple years ago. Placed a few charms, it’s warm, and animals avoid it now.” Harry nodded sagely.
“Why are we here?” Draco asked, suddenly suspicious.
“Because, like you said earlier, we need to talk.” He glanced at his surrougs ags and added pointlessly, “In private, this time.”
“Oh.”
Draco cast his eyes to the grass blades sticking up from between his toes. He was nervous.
“Listen, what happened earlier. I don’t regret it, alrig Ha Harry stated.
“You don’t regret it.” Draco repeated, rather numb to the sentence.
“I kissed you because I wanted to. And you kissed me…why did you kiss me? Was it for them?” Harry asked patiently, as if he were not at all effected.
“You want to know why I kissed you?” Draco looked up to meet his eyes. “I had to prove something to myself. Potter, I’m not supposed to talk to you. My father would not allow it.”
Harry took a step back in shock. Something wasn’t right. “Your father…he’s not…” His voice sounded worn. “You have to let him go.”
A whistle blew ominously threw the trees and reached them in the form of warm, rushing wind. Draco could feel his father all over it.
“I can’t. s lis like trying to let go of a hand, or an eye. You can’t just…” Draco trailff, ff, unsure of his own words.
“Then cut him off. He’s dead.” Harry stated callously. There was a mixture of anger and pity in his voice.
Draco didn’t say anything, but waited for Harry to initiate conversation. He wanted to talk about something besides his father, if he could have this time alone with Harry. The entire school knew anyway,reperepeated in his mind. Eventually, he gave up. “He used to call me Cat.”
Harry stared at him blankly. Apparently, he was unfamiliar with this. “Cat?” As if the term was dear to him.
“Yes, I don’t know why.” Draco shifted nervously, suddenly apprehensive about divulging this information. It was not a thing to be spoken of casually, and doubly so considering he was speaking to his arch enemy.
“It suits you.” Harry muttered, turning his face to stare at the rustling trees.
Draco set the cloak on the ground and sprawled himself on top of it, staring into the bright starry sky.
Harry continued, “But I wanted to come here to ask you, or to tell you. I don’t know. I just want you to know that I didn’t regret it.”
“What?” Draco muttered dreamily.
“The kiss.”
“Oh.” Draco didn’t really know what to say to that. Could he honestly say that he didn’t regret it either? He had thought, somewhat childishly, that because the school already thought it was so, he might as well indulge himself. But would he change it if was given the chance?
“The school knows about it. They actually think it’s gone a lot farther than it has.” Harry smiled wryly, “Well, I guess that didn’t really look like our first kiss.”
Draco smiled at that. Too fun. “We could practice some more.”
Harry stood still in the rushing warm wind. Draco could not hear him shift or move, but could not see him as he looked up into the sky. He assumed Harry was still there.
“Don’t worry, I’m joking. Potter, I know you don’t regret it. That’s wonderful.” He said sarcastically, “But there are things I have to think about. Giving in to you is all well and good in itself, but I, unlike those of us who have no need for family approval, must make a good impression on society. Meaning I shouldn’t have kissed you in the first place, dare or not.”
Draco could feel Harry’s anger kindled, “Family approval?”
Draco gasped. Tears near threatened to fall, but he suppressed them. “I am a Malfoy.”
“You’re whatever you want to be.” Harry stated mildly. This conversation was not going to get anywhere. “I’ll take you back, Draco.”
“Since when do you get to call me by my first name? Most disrespectful.” Draco tatted girlishly, “And I should like to sleep out here tonight. It’s warm like you said, and I like the quiet.”
“I’ll stay with you then. The animals avoid this clearing, but humans are a different matter entirely.” Harry explained. They both saw through it.
“Come here, then.” Draco scooted over on the makeshift blanket to allow room for Harry. He watched as Harry slowly shuffled over, embarrassed or nervous, and grinned as they both kicked off their shoes.
“What are we going to do about this?” Harry asked after settling himself next to Draco.
“About the rumors?” Draco laughed, “Obviously, sleeping together isn’t really going to solve the situation.”
Harry suddenly rolled over, pressing himself against Draco’s bare chest. Draco realized with a start that Harry was straddling his hips.
“Then again, neither is this.” Harry leaned down and kissed him. He grinned mischievously as he rolled his hips against Draco’s in experimentn. n. Draco stifled a moan and shut his eyes, dazzled by the bright sensation. Harry put a hand behind Draco’s warm back and trailed a line of kisses down his neck. Their increasing arousal was becoming apparent to both of them. Suddenly, his lack of a shirt became a blessing, and Draco arched his back to press against Harry’s chest.
At the worst time possible, Draco had a vision of his father laughing as a smaller version of himself struggled against the binds on his wrists. Wild terror shown on his face as Lucius dragged him across the cold stone floor by the cord that bound his hands. His back was red from scraping on the rough stone, and his crying was audible throughout the hallway. The memory faded as quickly as it had come. Draco bolt upright, throwing Harry on his back. Sweat coursed down his body and he took in deep, grating breaths.
He winced when he heard Harry yelp. He drew his knees up to his chin and shuddered, the warm wind had suddenly gone cold. He could still hear his father’s whispers in the air.
“Draco.” Harry made it a point to emphasize his name.
“What?” Draco spat, resentful.
“What’s wrong?”
“Don’t worry about me, Potter. Happens all the time.”
“You chuck people off of you by doing sit ups?” Harry tried to make a joke of it, but saw it wouldn’t work.
“No, you idiot, I can’t evouchouch you without thinking about him.” Draco sighed and rested his head on his knees. “He’s everywhere.”
Harry knew who he was talking about. He didn’t try to comfort him without knowing what to say. Draco was strangely appreciative of that, and before long, he found himself dozing off. The situation had become comfortable, when they were not vying for control. Neither of them had spoken for a few minutes, and Draco found himself strangely content with this. No one to impress. Nobody to see him sleep but this boy. Harry.
