TWIN DRAGONS
*You don't remember me
But I remember you
I lie awake and try so hard
Not to think of you
But who can decide what they dream?
And dream I do
I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you to live, to breathe
You're taking over me
I look in the mirror and see your face
If I look deep enough"
"Taking Over Me" — Evanesence
Kitara Davidson pushed her way out into the hallway with her classmates, mostly sixth-year Ravenclaws like herself, with a scattering of Slytherins. She stared at the floor as she walked, her mind still on her latest Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. They were finally getting to the topic that interested her the most: the strengths and weaknesses of the human body itself. There were plenty of witches and wizards in Kitara's family, but very few of them had ever attended Hogwarts or had any sort of training in the use of their magic. Kitara's father had been killed by Voldemort's followers years before, mostly because he did not know how to use his power to defend himself. As a result, Kitara studied Defense Against the Dark Arts more thoroughly than any other subject, but she did not like relying solely on magic, either. She jumped at any chance she could find to learn about more physical fighting techniques.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she did not see the three Slytherins in front of her until she walked straight into one of them. They both tumbled to the ground, Kitara's books and scrolls scattering everywhere. She sat up slowly, clutching her head where it had hit the floor and looking about to see who she had run into. The Slytherin boy was still picking himself up and dusting off his robes, but she knew that silver hair and those cold blue eyes. Bloody hell, she thought, of all the people I could run into, it would be Draco Malfoy.
"Do you have eyes, you buggered—" Draco's drawl cut short as he looked at her, the cruel twist of his mouth slipping just a bit.
Kitara began slowly collecting her things, avoiding his eyes. "I'm sorry, I just wasn't looking."
"Yes, well—" His tone brought Kitara's head up. He was famous for his complete lack of conscience and his harsh arrogance. Uncertainty was not something she had expected to hear in his voice. His handsome face was contorted as if he was struggling with himself. It lasted only a moment, and then his usual sneer was back in place.
"Crabbe, Goyle," he snapped, addressing the two boys on either side of him. "Help her with her books."
The gesture was unexpected, but Kitara felt no gratitude toward the blonde boy.
"How kind of you, Mister Malfoy," she said sarcastically, "having your slaves pick up after me, and all."
A cloud passed over Draco's face, but again he suppressed it. "You know me?" he asked.
Kitara shot him a grim smile. "By reputation, of course."
He smiled back, his face glowing with pride. "I don't think I've had the pleasure of your name yet," he said.
She looked at him carefully, not sure if he was being serious or merely playing some cruel joke. Finally she said, "Kitara."
"Kitara? Unusual name, but very pretty."
Was he complimenting her? Kitara met his gaze squarely, her green eyes finding his blue. "It means "dragon'," she said, the words flying out of her mouth before she could stop them. What was she doing, carrying on a conversation with Draco Malfoy?
Draco's smile was charming, though it still carried frozen arrogance. "How interesting." Kitara knew all too well that Draco's name also meant "dragon'.
Crabbe and Goyle finished picking up her books and handed them to Draco, who in turn offered them to Kitara with a tiny bow. She snatched them away, eyeing him suspiciously, and his smile became thoughtful and a bit amused.
"You are not afraid of me." It was not a question, but Kitara answered it as one anyway.
"Why should I be? I'm not some helpless first-year that you can bully, Mister Malfoy."
One pale eyebrow shot up, and his cheeks flushed a bit, but Draco maintained his composure.
"Kit!" a voice yelled down the hallway.
Kitara turned to see a tall seventh-year Gryffindor making his way down the corridor, his hand held up in greeting. She breathed a sigh of relief.
Draco's eyes skipped to the approaching boy and back to her, noting her grateful smile. "Wood's a friend of yours, is he?"
"Oliver is my boyfriend," she said, clipping her words short with agitation.
Draco flashed her a pitying look. "I'm so sorry."
Kitara glared at him and opened her mouth to reply, but Oliver reached them, and she swallowed whatever she had been about to say.
"Hullo, Kit. Sorry I'm late. Quidditch practice, you know."
Kitara beamed up at him, savoring every syllable of his beautiful Scottish accent. Oliver's deep brown eyes swept over the three Slytherins.
"Not giving you any trouble, are they?"
Crabbe and Goyle shrank back underneath his cold gaze, but Draco sneered up at the taller boy. "We were only helping her with her things, Wood. No need to get your knickers in a twist."
Oliver frowned at him, taking a step forward, but Kitara laid a hand on his arm.
"Let's go," she said softly.
With a last glare for the Slytherins, Oliver took her arm and led her away. Kitara could feel Draco's eyes following them down the hall.
