The Chronicles of a Werewolf
Chapter One:
Early
Retreat
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
Harry Potter sat on the dusty floor in the
smallest bedroom of Number 4 Privet Drive looking through an old photo
album. The raven haired Gryffindor
flipped through the worn yellowing pages as he studied the images and faces of
the people contained in the moving pictures.
He looked at the image of Hermione, Ron, and Himself in the Gryffindor
Common Room waving at him. Turning the
page, he looked at his mother and father as they held baby Harry. Taking a deep breath he turned to the next
page.
There it was.
The picture he had refused to look at since
IT happened.
The Saviour of the Wizarding World didn’t
like to think about IT. He always purposefully
passed this picture. But now he was
looking at it. The image of his parent’s
wedding. James holding a giggling Lily
by the waist and… there he was. The man
who haunted his dreams.
Sirius Black.
There he was. Laughing and smiling, not knowing that in his
near future he’d be locked up in Azkaban for murder. Not knowing that in his distant future he’d
be…
No.
He wouldn’t think about it! He refused to think about it!
“I
just need to think of the happy times.” Harry thought. “That’s
what he would want.”
With that last thought Harry closed the old
worn book and placed it back into the loose floorboard under his bed. He stood up and stretched. Stifling a yawn he looked at the glowing
numbers of his alarm clock.
11.42 pm
Harry had sat on the dusty wooden floor for
more than two hours looking at his photo album.
That’s all he had been doing lately.
It was only the second week of the Summer Holiday and he had already
finished all of his school homework. Now
all that there was to do was sit in his small room and think.
About life.
About school.
About Ron and Hermione.
About The Order and Dumbledore.
This inadvertently led to thoughts about
Lupin which then led to thoughts about Sirius.
Whether he liked it or not, he couldn’t
help think about Sirius and that fateful night.
The night Sirius fell into that cursed
Veil!
Harry blamed himself. He knew he shouldn’t, but he did. He blamed himself and Lupin. If Remus hadn’t held him back he could have
possibly caught Sirius before he fell.
But then, if he had fought harder against Remus’ hold on him, he could
have possibly caught Sirius. Either way,
it was both their fault, even though he knew he shouldn’t blame himself or
Lupin.
“Stop it!” he yelled quietly has he slapped
himself lightly.
He had to stop thinking about it. It was in the past! Nothing could be done!
The Gryffindor Heir shook his head as if to
shake water from his hair. He walked to
his window, opened it, and leaned against the wooden frame. A genuine smile ghosted across his lips as he
closed his eyes in pleasure from the cool breeze against his cheeks.
His emerald green eyes shot open when he
heard the soft hoot of an owl.
It wasn’t Hedwig, as she was currently in
her cage nibbling on her fresh dead mouse.
Harry jumped out of the way as a large barn
owl flew into his small bedroom and landed with a soft thump on his bed. He untied the small scroll from the owl’s
talons and fed it some stale bread that he had been given for dinner by Aunt
Petunia. The dark haired teenager joined
the large bird on his bed and opened the letter. He had been waiting for a response from The
Order.
Harry,
Hello, I trust this letter finds you
well. I’m sorry to hear that your summer
hasn’t been going as well as it should. It’s
completely understandable. This summer
is going to be hard for all of us, especially for you. That is why I am pleased to tell you that a
certain elderly wizard has agreed – however reluctantly – to allow you to leave
the Dursley’s and come live with me for the rest of the summer.
I would love to hear from you as
soon as possible! Please write back,
Harry. I understand if you don’t want to
leave your Aunt and Uncle’s, but please consider this.
Looking forward to your response,
R.J. Lupin
The emerald eyed youth stared wide eyed at
the letter he held in his shaking hands.
Leave the Dursley’s?
For the rest of the summer?
“This
can’t be right.”
Harry thought. “Why am I allowed to leave the Dursley’s so
early? It’s only the second week? How
did he manage to get Dumbledore to agree to this? Something must have happened!”
Harry stared at the letter a little longer
in dumb shock before grabbing some parchment, a quill, and his ink from
underneath the floorboard. He dipped his
quill into the green ink and poised the end over the yellow paper.
Professor
Lupin,
I just received your letter and I
must say I am confused! Don’t get me
wrong, it’s nice to hear from a friend, but leave the Dursley’s? Has something happened? Is everyone okay?
Harry
P.S.
How soon can I leave?
The Gryffindor rolled the parchment up
tightly and tied it securely to the barn owl’s outstretched leg. He carried the large animal to the window and
whispered the address.
“Now
I just have to wait.” He thought as he watched the bird disappear
into the distance.

Harry sat in his room for two days waiting
for a reply from Lupin. He only left to
go to the bathroom and he only took one shower during the long 48 hours. Aunt Petunia was the only one brave enough to
come to his door and that was only to bring him his stale bread and water for
breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When she
did come to his door, she didn’t knock or say a word, just slipped the food
through the slot at the bottom of his door that had been installed during the
summer before his second year at Hogwarts.
So, you can imagine his surprise when there was a rather loud knock on
his bedroom door at 3.30
pm.
The Gryffindor looked up from his
Transfiguration book. His lunch had
already arrived and it was too early for dinner. And why would they knock on the door?
Harry hesitantly stood up and set his book
on his desk. There was another knock,
louder then before. The green eyed youth
took a step forward and stopped. He quickly
drew his wand and held it in front of him.
You could never be too careful.
He twisted the handle of his door and quickly threw it open, pointing
his wand threateningly at…
“Lupin?!”
“How many times do I have to tell you,
Harry? Call me Remus!” The older man laughed lightly.
He walked into Harry’s room and looked
around slowly then sat himself onto Harry’s bed causing it to squeak quietly as
it sagged under his weight.
Harry blanched. “Wha- what are you doing here?”
Remus laughed again. “Nice to see you too.”
“Er, sorry!” The young Gryffindor said quickly. “It’s just… so unexpected.”
“Yes, sorry ‘bout that.” Remus said, eyeing the room once more. “So, um… you ready to go? I’ve got the Knight Bus waiting outside.”
Harry blanched for the second time. “Wha-
er… yeah, I’m ready. Let me just grab
some things really quickly.” The
Gryffindor turned to pick up his things when an idea struck him. “Er,
Re-Remus…” He fumbled over the
name. “Can’t the Muggles see the Knight
Bus if it’s just sitting out there?”
The adult smiled at Harry. “No, they can’t. I’m not sure why, I think there might be a
spell.” He waved his hand dismissively. “Now get your things.”
Remus stroked Hedwig’s feathers as Harry
quickly scooped all of his belongings from underneath the loose
floorboard. He had packed as soon as he
had sent the letter to Lupin earlier that week so all he needed to grab was his
parchment, quill, and photo album.
The tawny haired wizard grabbed Harry’s
trunk – the Dursley’s had allowed him to keep it in his room during the summer
– and headed downstairs. Harry grabbed
Hedwig’s cage and carried his belongings out into the hallway. He glanced quickly into his room to make sure
he had everything and then followed the older man downstairs and out the front
door.

The ride in the Knight Bus was a bumpy
one. They were the last stop and were on
the rickety bus for near half an hour.
When the Bus finally lurched to a stop they were in front of a small park.
Harry quirked an eyebrow. “Er, Remus, this isn’t whe-“
“Now, now Harry!” Remus said quickly, looking around. “Let’s get your things and we’ll be off!”
The raven haired youth eyed his father’s
friend warily but did as he was told.
The two Gryffindor’s had barely reached the sidewalk when the large bus
disappeared with a loud crack!
Now that they were off the bus, Harry
figured it was okay to ask Remus why in Merlin’s Beard they were in front of a
park and not Grimmauld Place.
Remus’ kind face stretched into a small
smile as Harry voiced his question aloud.
“I thought that would have been obvious, Harry. Grimmauld Place
is a secret, I couldn’t just tell the Knight Bus to drop us off there. What would they have thought?”
Harry nodded, that made sense. “Can I ask you another question?”
“You just did.”
The young Gryffindor couldn’t help but roll
his eyes at his friend’s sarcasm. “Ha
ha! Very funny.”
The werewolf laughed lightly. “Alright alright. What is your question?”
Harry pouted and crossed his arms. “I don’t think I want to ask you now.”
The tawny haired adult smiled. He could play these games, he was a Marauder remember? “Alright then.” He shrugged.
Green eyes widened as Harry blanched for
the third time that day. He finally
sighed in defeat. “So why am I coming to
stay with you? Has something happened?”
“That’s two questions.”
“Just answer!”
“I thought we could cheer one another up,
and no, nothing has happened… yet.”
“See, that wasn’t so hard.”
“Never said it was.”
