He scowled as he came into
the medium sized house and set his car keys on the table before heading to the
kitchen and sending a sideways glance to his left, he stopped, his expression
open. His roommate was leaning over the sink, hands on the sides of it while
her eyes were closed, her body shaking.
These crying sessions were
getting more frequent, usually happening while she thought he was sleeping and
she would silently cry herself until sleep overtook her, him staying up long
after her breathing had evened out and deepened. He wanted to reach out and
hold her, tell her that he cared for her for far longer than anyone could
imagine and that the danger that they were in was, hopefully, minimal.
But no one knew his true
emotions, except for his father and Dumbledore. His father -- he had died at
the hand of his son and Dumbledore merely had his assumptions.
Day after day, he wanted
to tell her... everything that he had kept in since two years ago, their fifth
year of attending Hogwarts, but no, for now, they would be just friends. That's
what she needed: a friend.
Her voice brought him out
of his thoughts and he looked up from the kitchen floor to look her in the eye,
unbelievably gray eyes sending questions that his tongue could never form.
"Oh...
hi. I didn't realize that you
were home. I didn't hear you come in. You have a good day?" she asked,
wiping away the tracings of tears with the backs of her hands and pads of her
fingers.
He nodded, letting his features
turn back into an impassive expression. No need to tell her he had gotten fired…
again.
"That's good."
she whispered, going back to cleaning the dishes. He watched her as she tried
to compose herself and sighed softly. He removed the jacket from his broad
shoulders and draped it on the back of one of the kitchen's chairs and the two
top buttons of his shirt were expertly unbuttoned and while he was walking
over, he unbuttoned his cufflinks and started rolling up his sleeves. Standing
next to her, she looked up at him, eyes brimming with tears again and lined red,
slightly bloodshot. He gathered that she was expecting an insult, not what he
was about to ask.
"Need some
help?" He asked, his hip moving
over to bump hers softly and she smiled, the tears spilling down her cheeks and
she nodded.
She responded a few
minutes later, "I'll let you help," she said, returning to her
normal teasing self as she passed him a plate to rinse as she paused, "if
you sing for me."
He let out a rumble laugh
and nodded, "Always having ulterior motives, aren't we, Hay?” he asked,
using the nickname that he had used since knowing her full name, Hayley, as he rinsed it before he wiped the water droplets
off with a towel.
His laugh was contagious and
she found herself smiling. "Of course. They
motivate me to do things... like.... this!" she splashed him with the
soapy water, getting some of his face and shirt wet, but mostly missed him,
getting it on the floor. Neither noticed.
He shook his head as he
smiled and raised an eyebrow, "And I take it that was just so that you
could see my beautifully sculpted Roman God body, right?"
She grinned, "Oh
dear, how could you ever see right through my façade?!"
she mocked him with a smile.
He let himself laugh again
as he rinsed and dried for a few minutes, signaling that they were done.
"You never
sang." she pointed out and he grinned.
"That's because, luv, I had ulterior motives, also. I was waiting." He
pushed himself off of the counter's edge and stood before her, "May I have
this dance?" he asked and she felt her cheeks color as she slipped one of
her hands in his and the other went up to his shoulder, the other one of his
hands wrapped itself around her waist and pulled her closer to him, resting
softly on her lower back.
He started leading them as a Frank Sinatra melody escaped through his lips.
She shook her head as she
looked into his eyes and he spun her, pressing his lips to her forehead as he
brought her back.
When he stopped, they
continued dancing, just swaying, "You know just how to cheer me up...
Thank you, Danny."

His father stared at
him incredulously. "You what?" his syllables were spoken with
clippings to them, matching the glare that anyone but Draco would have
shuddered under.
"I love her."
Draco repeated, his voice steady, unwavering. He had just told his father that him,
a Malfoy, in his years attending Hogwarts had fallen in love with a muggle
born, Hermione Granger.
"You have
disgraced the family name, bathing in muddy blood." Lucius pulled his wand
from his cane, starting an Unforgivable Curse.
"Avada --"
But Draco had been quicker.
"Avada
Kedavra!" Draco's shouted, a green, blinding light erupted from the end of
his wand and hit his father dead in the chest, sending him to his knees where
he fell the rest of the way to the floor, face first at his son’s shoes.
Draco's adrenaline had
been pumping, flushing his face and he had acted quicker than he ever thought
possible.
In a slight daze, he
left his Father's body there on the hard, marble floor of the Malfoy Manor's
foyer; he exited quickly to rejoin his comrades. With a -crack!- he apperated
from his house's steps to a castle that he was to meet everyone at.
Someone gave a yelp as
he apperated next to them and found that he was standing on the youngest
Weasley's foot.
"Oops. Sorry Ginny." He had changed
the past year, due to the fact that he no longer had his father controlling
him, his thoughts. He had grown to like the Weasley family, even though they
were poor. Draco gave an apologetic smile and she gave him one back, still a
little unsure of how to treat him.
"Anyone see
'Mione?" he asked around and quickly appeared with Dumbledore.
They hugged tightly and
when she pulled back, she looked him dead in the eye, "How'd he take the
news?" she asked. He hadn't told her that he had loved her... those simple
three words had scared him out of his wits (although, no one would have to know
that). She was referring to the fact that he was supposed to tell Malfoy Senior
that he was fighting on the true side -- the "good" side.
"He didn't take it
too well," his eyes moved to settle on Dumbledore's and he turned back to
Hermione, "Will you excuse us for a few minutes?"
She nodded with
understanding and walked to talk to her best friend that many called
The-Boy-Who-Lived.
Draco watched her
before turning to look at his Headmaster, "I killed him, Professor. I
killed my own flesh and blood." Draco said to him, looking him dead in the
eye.
"Ahh, I suspected so, Mr. Malfoy. I am deeply sorry that you
had to," The old wizard placed a hand on his shoulder and they started
walking, “I’m sure he would have died later on tonight." Dumbledore was
referring to the war that was about to break open any second, like a crack of
lightning. The Order along with many other’s, like Draco, offered their
services, were awaiting the Death Eater’s appearance
through the thick fog that seemed to come from the presence of Dementors, not the weather.
Draco nodded, taking in
a breath to steady his nerves.

The war had been a bloodbath...
if any blood had spilt. Strongly fragile bodies laid there, eyes facing the sky
from the curses thrown their way. The
Dark Side had lost much more than the Good Side, many of the individuals who
attended parties at the Malfoy Mansion lay there, Draco noted as he walked
through, seemingly unscathed. But many had fled, scared.
Draco came away with
the worst injury anyone could come away with -- psychological problems. But he
supposed that was more of his Father's doing than the war, itself.
His eyes rested on
Hermione's body slouched over someone's head that was in her lap, her frame
shaking uncontrollably. Hurrying over, he noticed to be his "enemy's"
body, dead still.
Her tears fell on
Harry's cheeks, nose, and forehead. His hand touched her upper arm and she
looked up and he felt his heart break for her.
"He died because
we killed Voldemort... We killed him!" Hermione broke down into more tears and Draco
sat down on the grassy knoll, across from her.
"I killed my best
friend, Draco!” Hermione's tears were rushing faster down her cheeks and
landing all over Harry's face now... some were now on his lips and glasses, “I
just wish that I could have said goodbye." She continued in a whisper.
She let out a moan of a
sob and her body shook and Draco immediately moved Harry out of Hermione's
eyesight and hugged her to him, holding her tightly, letting her whimpers
escape out of her mouth and into the crook of his neck.
He didn't release her
until sometime later, after they had whispered a conversation and stayed there,
letting Draco's trousers get wet from the dew appearing on the grass.
They looked at one
another and that's when Draco first let his romantic feelings be known to
anyone that was watching. His hand came up to wipe away any remaining tears on
her cheek and he looked back and forth between her chestnut eyes and
swollen-from-crying lips. He leaned forward and so soft it could have barely
even been called a kiss, he kissed her, his eyelashes brushing softly against
her cheek at the same time, giving her so many sensations that it was hard to
concentrate on just one.

Everyone was gathered
at Hogwarts the next day, the ones who had been hurt were sent to St. Mungo’s.
"Since we were not
able to capture or kill all of the Death Eaters last night, they will obviously
try to redeem themselves or raise Voldemort again, so they will go to any
lengths to find us and kill us. I am going to split all of you into groups of
two and you will go somewhere that only I and both of you will know. Now, I
know that for some of you, you’re still attending Hogwarts. Do not worry about
your studies. You will only need to concentrate on living. I suppose that will
take up most of your thoughts.” He looked around the room at the remaining witches
and wizards that were lucky, “First off are Mr. Malfoy and Miss Granger. Please
follow me into this room behind me." he said as he turned and they
followed him into the room. Hermione automatically recognized it as the Room of
Requirement.
He closed the door and
cast a silencing spell upon the room so none could hear. "Now for you
two... Draco, you're probably the most looked after besides me and Severus and
so I have decided to partner you up with Hermione. She is a very clever witch
and doesn’t miss much. I'm going to send you overseas to the United States. The
President has been informed of what the situation is and has placed you under
his Witness Protection Program. When you get there, they will relocate you to
where they feel you are most safe. You will also receive a name change and
identification cards. Thank you for choosing to side with us, Draco. It means
more than you can imagine." Dumbledore spoke quickly, never missing a beat
and suddenly, they found themselves being escorted to London's International
Airport.
"We can't apperate
there?" he asked and Hermione gave him a look, "Are you serious,
Draco? We have to blend-in. Be conspicuous. Act like muggles."
she said, ending the sentence in a whisper and he sighed as he knew that he was
defeated.
"Like a muggle.. like a muggle." he was
telling himself as the plane took off, making him almost hyperventilate.
A hand closed over his
and he looked over to see Hermione, looking much more comfortable than him.
"If you ever put
me on a plane again..." he threat was real, but he was rendered speechless
as his heart raced as his thoughts revolved around the plane taking a nose dive
and blowing them sky-high as it touched the ground again. But instead, the
plane evened out.
"I've decided; I
don't like planes." he told her, looking over at her. She smiled weakly at
him and looked forward again, closing her eyes.

They had been relocated
to a place called Brookings, Oregon. It was a small city, very different from
what either of them expected. So was America, for that matter.
Draco had
been given a job as a music DJ in a local bowling alley, but soon was kicked
out for playing “Emo” music. He then was hired at a
Chinese Restaurant. He was fired there for eating loads of fortune cookies and
cursing at the fortunes... they were, however, the customer’s cookies. He was
then hired as a valet for the local Cinema. He was quickly fired for sitting
and watching the movie instead of cleaning the theater. And all of this
happened within a one week period. He quickly gave up trying to find a job and
stayed at home, serving as the House “wife” of the household.
Hermione was able to
keep a steady job, working as a librarian in the town's library, often being
caught reading the books instead of putting them back in their proper place.
