Necessary
Measures
Introduction (Chapter One)
Why Godric’s Hollow Harry had no idea, but he didn’t have time
to really think about it. He knew that he had to hurry before the death eaters
got there. It was slow going slipping and sliding down the hills mostly; his
cloak had become a hindrance to the decent and had been taken off before he had
gotten far. This only made the need hurry more prudent as he was entirely
visible to the enemies he knew wouldn’t be far behind him.
At the bottom of the
descent he finally saw his goal. This had never been the way Harry had
envisioned returning to the home of his parents. Not like this. He didn’t have
time to even soak in the look of the place. With a slight pang to his heart he
took his eyes from house and pulled out his wand, it would be easier to just
stun him Harry knew. There’s was no time to trade spells with Draco Malfoy, not
if he wanted them both to live.
He ran as silently as
he could towards the door. Still refusing to wonder why Snape had hidden Malfoy
here of all places, it was far from safe. Another sick private joke of his
Harry thought, still the man was dead now so there would be no retribution for
this last stab.
The door opened
immediately to his touch, new protection spells apparently shunned as they
would have been a give away as to the location.
“Malfoy?” he called as
loud as he dared, squinting to see the man in the relative darkness. “Malfoy. Snape is dead. They know where you are. We have to
leave.”
“What are you doing
here?” an inflected snarl to the tone as the blonde’s silhouette became
visible.
“Petrificus Totalis!” The light shot out and hit Draco Malfoy in the
chest before he even had time to react. “Sorry, but we don’t have time to fight
Malfoy. They killed Snape. They know where you are now and are coming for you.
We have to leave if you want to live.”
Comprehension appeared
to dawn in the other man’s eyes. The punishment he had been promised for
failure had been fatal and no one had any doubt in Voldemort’s will to see that
through. Warily Harry removed the spell
holding him, but kept his wand trained just in case. He may have once hated
Malfoy, maybe still did a little. But the knowledge
that given the ideal opportunity the blonde still hadn’t had it in him to become
a murderer changed everything. Spoiled certainly, but far
from evil. He had just been scared and doing what he could to save his
family like everyone else. A fleeting twinge of pity prickled at the edges of
Harry’s consciousness once more.
“I have a portkey out. Then we can apparate from there. I don’t know
where to go though.” A wave of uncertainty flooded the man’s face and that tiny
fleck of pity was there in Harry once more.
“It’s okay. I have
somewhere.” The sound of angry voices filtered into the cottage as he spoke. “Let’s
go.”
The portkey led them to a forest, nothing special or notable at
all to be seen - A smart move on Malfoy’s part. He glanced askance at the man
now, wand held out scanning the countryside for more enemies.
“We should apparate
around a little Potter.” His eyes and wand were still darting at every noise. “If
Snape is dead then they’ll know about the portkey too.”
“They don’t.” Harry’s
voice was nearly a whisper. “I saw. I was there, I was going to..to…” he trailed off knowing
that to finish that sentence would only incense the blonde. “It doesn’t matter
now. You’re right, lets go. I’ll apparate you can
side-along. They won’t be checking for my magic. Only yours.”
They
apparated over most of England. Mostly obscure, uninhabited places, though not
all of them, several times they took the tube to other locations to be less
traceable. Neither noticed the looks from they received from the muggles as they ran onto the trains, harassed and still in
their wizarding robes.
It was half a day gone
before they finally stumbled up the rock face to a barely visible cave in which
Harry had been working from. The entrance was invisible unless you knew it was
there, and knew the password, and the spell, and had the magical signature of
Harry Potter.
A lot of research had
gone into creating this place for himself. The idea
originally gleaned from Voldemort himself, from the
voyage to fetch the horcrux. Much like the locket
that he still carried with him, this cave was a reminder to him of Dumbledore.
A reminder of why it was necessary to fight. Of what had to be done.
Like
saving Malfoy. Much like
breaking up with Ginny, a wound that was still very raw. It simply had been
necessary.
“Living in class I see
Potter. On a cliff face like the dodo? Fitting, don’t
you think.”
Yet, Harry had to
concede. No matter how necessary these things were, nothing would detract from
the fact that they were painful. There was nothing else for it just now
however. He would have to live with Malfoy. Assuming they didn’t just kill each
other off, a high possibility.
“Petrificus Totalis” The blonde’s mouth froze with the rest of his
body, Harry simply smirked. “I’m happy to leave you like that until the war is
over, you know Malfoy.”
When he finally did
release the spell, believing Malfoy subdued, all the blonde said in reply was a
sneered “Still not learned to keep your mouth shut, I see.”
