You pulled my heart out through your eyes…
The base pulsed in the air, seductive and
dangerous. No one seemed to have control. The bodies of the students slithered
and grinded against each other; not noticing whom they were with or where they
were.
Muggle music and Wizard music blended
together in a timeless dance of notes and voices. And those few souls who still
had a semblance of thought wished desperately for the same freedom as the
others around them.
Hermione wasn’t surprised to realize that
she was one of those few still thinking of things and responsibilities. The
dance, that she was currently attending, was a celebration for the defeat of
Voldemort. The dark wizard that had wrought havoc for years on the wizarding
world was finally defeated.
The final battle having taken place days
earlier, it was quick and vicious. The casualties were surprisingly few, Harry
having found Voldemort quickly.
Hermione shivered remembering those few
minutes that it all happened. She had been standing beside Harry with Ron ready
to face down the dark wizard when she was tackled to the ground as a stray
curse flew towards her.
She look up, dazed to see Draco Malfoy on
her, and with a wink he rose and joined Harry against Voldemort. Two death
eaters had engaged Ron, and Hermione ran to help him as she heard Malfoy and
Harry yell the killing curse at the same time.
There was a mighty flash of light and it
was over. The great Voldemort was defeated, by two eighteen year old wizards.
The Death eaters fell to the ground
withering in pain. Dumbledore, the teachers, and the Aurors took care off them
quickly.
Hermione, however, was too busy. She saw
Malfoy and Harry drop to the ground and she rushed to their sides with Ron.
A strobe light flashed in her eyes and she
was pulled from her thoughts. She smiled as she noticed Harry dancing with Ginny;
they looked so wrapped up in each other it was almost painful to watch. She
scanned the crowd and saw Ron dancing away with Luna, the two having been
dating for a few months now.
Everyone was on the dance floor with
someone who meant something to them. And there she was, Hermione, on the
outside looking in on the fun and abandonment enviously.
Neville smiled at her from across the
floor, before being dragged into the orgy of bodies by Susan Bones. Hermione
laughed lightly at the slashes of red appearing on Neville’s cheeks.
Red. Blood. She tried to shake the thoughts
from her head but they swarmed her, suffocating her with more memories from that
faithful day.
Reaching Harry and Malfoy, Ron and Hermione
immediately checked the two unconscious wizards for a pulse. Harry was out cold
but breathing fine. Ron called for help and the available Aurors and Snape
headed towards them.
Hermione brushed Malfoy’s hair from his
eyes and checked a deep wound on his side that was flooding his robes with
sticky blood. One hand lightly on his chest, the other running over his side.
Ever the Malfoy, his silver eyes cracked open and he said, “Granger…” harsh
intake of breath, “are you feeling me up?”
Hermione smiled through her tears, glad to
see he was fine, for now. Before she could answer the adults levitated him and
Harry and took them to the hospital wing in Hogwarts. The battle having taken
place on the grounds of the school.
Ron and Hermione stayed with Harry until he
had regained consciousness and was able to leave the hospital wing. The next
few days were a blur of pictures, award ceremonies, interviews, and worst of
all funerals.
Hermione hadn’t had time to think of Malfoy
saving her and fighting for the order. That was until she lay down at night and
her thoughts wandered. She wondered about him, she really had. The two of them
had received the privileges of becoming heads that year, and had managed to
form some sort of professional relationship-despite past incidents. He had
changed a considerable amount since fifth year when his father had been sent
away, and again in sixth year when news of the elder Malfoys’ death reached
Hogwarts.
She was surprised when the focus of her
thoughts suddenly appeared in front of her. Appearing as usual, looking
absolutely gorgeous. She smiled at him and said in greeting, “Malfoy.”
Dressed in a tight black t-shirt and baggy
grey shorts, he carried himself like someone used to getting what he wanted.
And by the look in his eyes, she was not wholly unsure as to what that
something was. He answered her greeting with a tilt of his head, causing his
long blond hair to fall across his eyes. “Granger.”
When he didn’t say anything more, Hermione
started to fidget; she had never been totally comfortable around boys that
weren’t Harry or Ron. “How are you feeling?” She asked trying to strike up a
conversation like so many other girls managed to do around boys.
One perfect brow cocked in amusement.
“Fine. And you?” He said his silver eyes flashing in the pulsing lights.
“I meant your side, is it healed now?” she
said, not understanding why her tongue seemed glued to the top of her mouth.
She could usually at least speak coherently around Draco, even when his smile
did weird things to her stomach.
“Ah, yes.” He answered, having to lean
closer to be heard above the pounding music. “It was mended fine, there’s a
small scar but it’s nothing compared to some that others have.” He finished
with a pointed look at her arm where a vicious looking scar resided. Hermione
had chosen not to take the healing potion to dissolve the scar tissue.
She had fought in a war and watched people
die. She never wanted to forget that, forget those that sacrificed their lives
for the world she now lived in, in peace.
She shrugged, saying nothing.
“So-” Draco said in that signature drawl of
his, “why aren’t you out there dancing like everyone else?” He leaned against
the wall beside her, facing her and expectantly waiting for an answer.
Hermione felt an answering heat in body to
his nearness. “I don’t have anyone to dance with.”
Once again that brow lifted in question,
“Where are Potter and Weasley?” His eyes never left hers.
“Dancing with Ginny and Luna.” Hermione
managed to get out. Why was Draco talking to her and not dancing with one of
his many fawning girls- stalkers is what she called them.
“Ah, so there out there with the people
they love and you’re left standing on the side?” He whispered in her ear.
When had he gotten so close? “They really
do love Ginny and Luna.” She said ignoring what he was implying “I’ve never
seen them so happy before.” She watched Harry and Ginny kiss deeply before
separating and grinning at each other.
Unfortunately Draco wasn’t to be deterred
that quickly. “So why are you just standing here?”
“To much to think about I guess.” She
answered finally turning to face him.
“Well then, as head boy, I feel it’s my
duty to see that you’re having fun.” He whispered with a wicked looking grin.
Eyes wide, Hermione laughed. “Won’t one of
your little groupies hex me?”
Grabbing her hand he dragged her to the
centre of the floor, grinning. “We’ll just have to wait and see, now won’t we.”
Hermione laughed, which surprised her since
her head was usually filled with things that one could never laugh about.
Passing Ron and Luna dancing, Ron caught her eye leering at her in a comical
manner and eyeing Draco meaningfully.
Hermione couldn’t stop laughing at the
looks she was receiving from the other students- well the ones that noticed
anything besides their partner at the time. Most couldn’t care less, but she
defiantly saw the look that Blaze sent Draco while he danced with Lavender. A
look full of meaning that switched to her when Draco turned his back to him to
start dancing.
