Chapter One
The four young women looked from one another to the faces of their fathers. They couldn’t have heard right. It was impossible. They had just reached the age of their awakening. It was usually a time for grand celebrations where the girls would be spoiled even more than they already were.
“I’m sorry; I thought you said that we were being sent in search of our mates.” Abigail said her blue green hazel eyes showing her disbelief.
The crown prince of Darkness stared hard at his eldest daughter. His handsome face was a mask of barely restrained anger. “You heard me correctly young lady.” He barked.
“But daddy…” She pleaded reaching out to him.
“This isn’t up for debate Abigail.” Came the harsh voice of her uncle, the prince of Summer.
“You can’t be serious!” Aislinn cried.
“Why is everything such a battle with you four?” The prince of Light asked the gathered girls.
“Probably because you always ask us and now your ordering us out of the only homes we’ve ever known.” Martika responded flippantly from her place on the floor.
Kaleaha made a hushing motion her wide blue eyes showing her nervousness. She was just as unhappy as the other three but wisely held her tongue. After being informed that they were going to be spending their awakening away from their homes she had thought it was some kind of really cruel joke.
She sighed heavily as her head fell forward a sheet of golden hair shielding her face. Her agile mind quickly tried to figure a way out of the mess before them. She didn’t have to raise her head to know that the others, specifically her cousins, were staring at her.
The blonde lifted her head to meet Abby’s hopefully gaze. Slowly she shook her head. The other girls let out a sigh. If Kaleaha couldn’t find a way out that usually meant there wasn’t one.
“There, you see even she admits there’s no other course.” The prince of Winter proclaimed triumphantly.
“Don’t gloat daddy.” Martika said glaring at him.
Winter looked at his eldest child then at his nieces. It was with a heavy heart that he sat back against his gilded throne. “Girls, we would never send you away if it weren’t absolutely necessary. Our kind has been dwindling and with fewer and fewer children being born to us we have no choice but seek mates outside our sithen.”
“But what about…” Abby began only to be interrupted.
“Don’t you think we have already considered all the possibilities of not sending you away?” Darkness asked his stormy gray eyes a swirling mass of churning emotions.
“If there was any chance at all that you could find them within any of our courts we wouldn’t even be discussing this.” Light informed them gently.
“All right.” Aislinn agreed reluctantly. “We will do as you have commanded.” She couldn’t quite keep the bitterness out of her voice for the last word. The other girls let her speak for them all even though through the hierarchy it should have been Martika’s voice that rang supreme.
“It’s not as bad as all that.” Summer said smiling softly at his oldest girl. “We do have gifts for you.” As he spoke, four ornate boxes appeared before each prince.
Abigail clapped her hands merrily. “Presents!” She exclaimed her eyes shining and her skin beginning to glow softly.
“Now how did I know that would change your mind?” Martika reproved gently.
“Because she is the next in line to inherit the dark throne and how often do they rejoice in things.” Aislinn returned. Though said in jest they were all aware that Abigail had seen things that would make most cringe in fear. It was whispered that anything said in the dark would eventually get back to her. No one, not even her own cousins, knew if there was any truth to that bit of lore.
Abby shot both of them a dark look. Neither of them appeared to be the least bit remorseful though as they smiled innocently back at her. Blowing a raspberry at the girls she turned to face her father. “Can I have it now?” She pleaded with him.
The prince of Darkness tucked a strand of her midnight blue hair behind her ear. A soft smile on his face, he watched her delighted expression. She was every bit as lovely as her mother had been. He shook that depressing thought away as he handed her the chest in his hands.
She held the ornate box carefully retreating to join her cousins. They sat in a circle as was their custom grinning at each other like Cheshire cats. One by one the girls slowly opened the chests. The expressions on their faces ranged from delighted to confused to dubious.
As one the girls held their right hands over the objects. The soft pulse of energy could be felt as it danced over their skin. The young women looked at each other, down at the boxes, then up at their fathers. They knew that these gifts didn’t have to be accepted but if they were they could never be returned.
“It’s beautiful.” Abigail breathed.
“Indeed they are lovely.” Kaleaha agreed looking at them all.
“Yes, but what are they?” Aislinn inquired her scarlet brow rising.
“And why do they only respond to us?” Martika questioned her hand hovering over Abby’s box felt nothing.
“That’s because they are your focuses.” Winter informed the girls.
“Why do we need them now?” Ais questioned suspiciously.
For the first time since this day had started the four crown princes looked distinctly uncomfortable. Each of them was wishing they had thought to include their consorts in this meeting.
Darkness looked at his brothers and had to control the human impulse to roll his eyes. While not exactly comfortable with the coming topic it could not be avoided. Actually, it wasn’t the subject matter that had him discomfited. It was whom he was talking to about it with that made him squirm slightly.
His stormy eyes watched all the girls for a long moment before speaking. “As the awakening becomes more pronounced your bodies will need these,” he gestured towards the chests still sitting before them. “To help control your magic.” He allowed himself a small smile at that.
“Excuse me while I say huh?” A thoroughly confused Abigail said.
Her cousins had to stifle their giggles at her expression. For all of her knowledge on a great many subjects she was still pretty naďve when it came to their heritage. She had little to no idea what was going to happen to her. The others had been lucky enough to have their mothers to fill in the gaps most professors refused to acknowledge.
Kaleaha ran her fingers down her cousin’s shoulder. “The awakening is the time when we begin to mature.” She said stepping in for her uncle. It was common knowledge that he had never sought another consort after the death of Abigail’s mother. “During the awakening it isn’t unusual for you to feel things that you never have before.” She told her trying to be subtle.
Martika laughed out right as Abby’s befuddled expression became more intense. “That’s not going to do it honey. You have come right out and say what you mean with her. You know that.” She managed to gasp once she got her laughter under control.
Aislinn shook her head. The crimson strands flying around her face made her turquoise eyes more pronounced. “What they’re trying to so delicately tell you is that during the awakening you’re going to want to be intimate with someone. It’s not unheard of for you to feel that way about your own gender either, though it is highly unlikely. In short you’re going to be ruled by your hormones.”
Abigail’s eyes widened and her face went from confused to shocked. She shook her head vehemently. “No!” She cried angrily. She stood abruptly. “I refuse!” She adamantly stated as she stomped her foot petulantly.
“Refuse all you like.” Martika inserted before her cousin could work up to a really good rant. “It’s still going to happen. Either you can take the focus and keep control of your magic or you can refuse it and wind up hurting someone accidentally. That is the only choice you have.” The normally lighthearted young woman stated seriously lending credence to her words.
Kaleaha stood embracing the younger girl. She knew instinctively what the problem really was. The subject was foreign to her. Abby didn’t have time to get used to the idea of the changes she would be going through and to top it off they were being sent away. Their entire lives had centered around the sithen and the school that they attended. Now all of that was being snatched away from her.
“At least you’ll have us.” Aislinn comforted the girl her arms wrapping both her cousins.
“We will have each other, won’t we?” Martika asked her ice blue eyes boring into her father and uncles, for the first time looking very much like the heir to the Winter throne.
“You will.” Her father answered relieved to be able to keep them together through this trying time. “You four will be exchange students to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”
“So who will be taking our places at the Academy?” Ais inquired.
The girls gave a small smile as they thought of Cascading Falls Academy. It was like most wizarding and witchcraft schools in that no one could tell you exactly where it was located. Nestled deep in the mountains surrounded by a pine forest a twenty-foot waterfall nearby had lent the place its name. It looked like a sprawling mansion with high wrought iron gates surrounding the campus. The school catered not only to witches and wizards but fey and many other magically inclined students. Unlike most of the schools in Europe and other countries there was no particular importance in being what some termed a “pureblood”. It didn’t buy you a damn thing in a country that prided itself on being a melting pot of cultures.
“And where exactly are they going to be staying?” Martika questioned her eyes alive with humor, no doubt planning to booby trap her room for the unsuspecting individual unfortunate enough to have her quarters.
“The girls are going to be staying at the academy so you can stop plotting whatever mischief you have in mind.” Winter informed his daughter.
The raven-haired young woman gave a negligent shrug of her shoulders, her impish smile firmly in place. “It was always a thought.” She responded without a hint of remorse.
“Who are they?” Abigail asked rejoining the conversation.
“Hannah Abbott, Hermione Granger, Lisa Turpin, and Pansy Parkinson.” Darkness answered relieved to see her coming around even if she wasn’t happy about the changes. If he were honest he wasn’t all that thrilled either. He would rather not send his child half way around the world where he couldn’t be there to protect her. However, the brothers were united on this issue.
“Ladies, what do you think of your gifts?” Summer asked gently reminding them that they neither accepted nor declined them.
“They are beautiful.” Kaleaha hedged as the foursome stared down at the chests.
“Gorgeous even.” Aislinn added her turquoise eyes slanting to Abby.
“We need them, don’t we?” Abigail asked quietly.
“We will.” Martika answered squeezing the older girl’s shoulder.
Kneeling the girls reached in and finally touched the gift. On the dark velvet was a wide bracelet with three rings attached to the bracelet by thin braided chains. A single jewel about the size of small robin’s egg sat in the middle of the cluster of chains. The jewels were different for each girl, for Kaleaha there was a yellow diamond, Abby’s was a vibrant emerald, Martika’s was drowning deep sapphire, and Aislinn’s was a dark glimmering garnet.
The princes watched as the daughters fingered the new piece of jewelry. They held their breath as each girl held them. Unbeknownst to the girls there was also one other feature their new focuses had. It had the ability to cast a homing beacon for their mates but it would only be activated once the piece was worn.
Kaleaha was the first to slip hers on. The bracelet shrunk the moment it touched her wrist. Slipping on each ring she gasped as the power of it washed over her. The diamond shone brightly for a moment before dying down. It wasn’t bad. She just wasn’t used to having to concentrate to use her magic.
Aislinn was the next to don hers. As with Kaleaha the instant it was placed on her skin the bracelet shrunk. Each of the rings slid easily onto her fingers. The garnet flared for a second then shone with its usual brilliance. A couple of minor spells showed her just how easy it would be to use it.
Abigail and Martika put theirs on at the same time. They watched fascinated as the bracelet shrank to fit their small wrists. They slipped the first ring onto their thumb, then the middle finger, and finally their ring finger. The jewel that sat in the middle of their hand flashed brightly before become ordinary once again.
Summer let out a sigh as the last girls placed their bracelets on. It didn’t appear that they were any the wiser about what they had done. His relief was short lived however as Abigail’s eyes widened and her hand scrabbled to wrench the piece of jewelry off her.
“What have you done?” Aislinn hissed beginning to feel the thrum of a spell sing through her veins.
“Only what we had to do to insure that we would continue to thrive as a people.” Darkness answered sadly.
