A/N: I decided to write the “first” part of “Missing You”
since I still had so many ideas about our fave twosome. Thanks to all who reviewed the last part:
Mada, hermioneandseverusfan82 (liked your story!), Martina, snapeslave,
ancientgirl, AJ (hoped it cleared things up), Anguloce, Yabo, Hypatia, Sari,
Minerva Ann McGonagall, beeky 63, Don, slytheringriffendor21 and the repeat
offenders Shdwcat27, SnapesPet30… and where would I be without Emmie? Spell-check your little heart out, girl. I may email you for some advice later on, so
count yourself warned!
WARNING: I have rearranged some matters for my own
convenience (Sirius is alive as well as Dumbledore, Hermione is a little older
than her “year group”, and the family life of our dear Sevvy has been tweaked
to be a bit more tragic) so if you object, I’m sure there are several other
stories more true to J.K.’s vision that you might want to read instead of
flaming me. I’m a lover, not a fighter!
***********************************************************
In the beginning………
Professor Severus Snape was having a fine day. He had just scared the living daylights out of
a gaggle of Hufflepuffs, caused a fellow
staff member to burst into tears, and tried (albeit unsuccessfully) to give the
entire castle detention. Yes, he was
certainly feeling his oats, he thought to himself as he hummed a few bars of “The
Death March,” cheerfully sweeping down the hall to the dungeons. Life was a wonderful thing. His mood soured as he entered his office to
find none other than Hogwarts’ resident know-it-all waiting in front of his
desk, shifting from foot to foot like a flamingo with bunions.
“What do you want,”
he snarled, slamming the heavy oak door banded with iron so hard that the
booming noise rang in his ears and succeeding in carting his bad mood further
downhill. “Stop jumping around!”
Hermione Granger jumped at his shout and tried to conceal
the trembling in her limbs. The Potions
Master looked as if someone had just killed his familiar and he thought she had
something to do with it. She cleared her
throat, very conscious of the malevolent stare he was favoring her with, and
began to speak. “P-Please, sir, I just
w-wanted to tell you that all the members of the Order are supposed to meet at Grimmauld Place
this weekend after classes.” With an
inward sigh of relief, she saw that his expression cleared somewhat –he would
always retain that “who flung poo” look on his face, she supposed- and he sat
back.
“And is that…all,
Miss Granger?” he asked, sneering at the fifth year and feeling satisfaction as
she raised a trembling hand to smooth her unruly brown curls.
Hermione nodded and disappeared from his presence as quickly
as she could manage it. The Head of
Slytherin always made her nervous, and she hated that Dumbledore had singled
her out to give Snape the message. It
wasn’t as if floo powder had suddenly ceased to exist! She adjusted her Prefect’s badge and hurried
back to the Gryffindor common room to get some studying done. She scooted through the portrait hole and
plopped down at one of the tables beside her best friend. Ginny was a third year with bright red hair
that immediately advertised the fact that she belonged to the Weasley clan. Her friend looked up with a smile that turned
from welcoming to commiserating as Hermione told her about her errand. “He scares everyone, ‘Mione,” Ginny said
sympathetically. “But it is pretty funny how Ron is so terrified
of him. Oh, speak of the devil…”
Ron and Harry came clambering down from the dormitories to
join them – Ginny made sure to scoot over so Harry could sit beside her and he
took the offered space with a smile, making her flush slightly. The two had been spending quite a lot of time
together lately, and Hermione wouldn’t have been surprised if they soon announced
that they were “together.” Ron gave her
a hopeful look and what he thought was his best smile, not taking into
consideration the Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Bean still stuck to his
teeth.
“Oh, clean your teeth, Ronald!” she said in
exasperation. Unfortunately this didn’t
break off his interested scrutiny of her burgeoning bosom; he just picked off
the Bean and popped it back into his mouth, chewing loudly. Just
like a little boy, she thought disdainfully, but felt a stab of guilt – he was
her friend, after all. Lately, though…
she had caught him trying to have a look down her blouse on more than one
occasion, and once when she had tripped on the heavy rug beside the fireplace,
he had tried to catch her (so he said) and ended up groping her
enthusiastically while she beat on his head with the library’s copy of Hogwarts: A History. She just wasn’t interested in him in that way
but he refused to get the message even when she told him straight out.
Harry tore his eyes away from Ginny’s and turned to
Hermione. “We were talking earlier about
Remus and Tonks…she says that he won’t return her interest because she’s
younger than he is. And I was thinking,
what if we, um, did something to help her out?”
Hermione’s book slipped from her fingers and fell to the
tabletop with a thud. “What?” she
looked from Harry to Ron to Ginny, who was nodding thoughtfully. “What do you mean….help her out?”
Ron shrugged uncomfortably.
“I dunno, maybe make her older? Remember that aging potion Fred and
George cooked up so they could put their names in the Goblet of Fire? Something
like that.”
Ginny glared at her brother.
“Why does she have to be the
one that changes? Hermione should just make him
younger, that’s what I say!!!!”
Hermione’s mouth dropped open and her eyes began to narrow
dangerously. “How did my name get in the mix, is what I want
to know? It’s your idea, you do it! Honestly! Always running to me for everything!” Her face
was red with anger and she kicked the bench back as she stood, making Harry and
Ginny scramble to their feet before they were knocked off the bench beside
her. She stormed off up the staircase
with her best friend running after her and casting evil looks at both boys as
if she had never contributed to the discussion.
“Hermione! Hermione, wait!”
Ginny cried as she followed the furious Prefect into the dormitory. It took a bit of fast talking as well as
pillow dodging to convince Hermione to calm down and listen. When she had laid out her plan as well as
playing up the plight of poor Tonks, longing after an older man who wouldn’t
look twice at her because he was older, Hermione was finally willing to
participate.
“I’m not sure of the correct dosage, though,” she worried as
she dug out her Advanced Potions book and flipped to the section on aging
potions. Ginny grinned delightedly as Hermione wrote down equations and
narrowed her search for the right potion.
“Okay! I’ve got a reverse of Fred
and George’s potion, but I had to change a few ingredients…some of this isn’t
even in Professor Snape’s stores, and I’m still not exactly sure of the correct dosage, but it should be close to Tonks’
age. Let’s get a cauldron and get
started.” She was full of excitement at
creating something all her own, not noticing that her view on making the potion
was a complete 360 from her earlier objections.
Harry and Ron were relieved at her change of heart and
helped her as much as possible, mainly keeping Neville far away from the
preparations as his presence usually brought on a disaster. Ginny and Hermione contacted Tonks with the
news, and the Auror was delighted as well as touched that her young friends would
help her, hardly able to keep from bursting into tears. The process was finished by that weekend, and
they were all excited at the prospect of seeing the potion “in action.” Fortunately for them, the full moon was
imminent and it would be easier to slip the potion to the werewolf since Snape
would undoubtedly be bringing Remus his usual potion to keep the man from
harming anyone.
*******************************************************************
That Friday…
Hermione corked the glass bottle of potion and sealed it
carefully with wax after putting a few drops of vanilla flavoring into it to
mask the taste. Nothing like a foul
taste to announce that what the drinker was currently enjoying contained
something that wasn’t supposed to be there.
She passed the flask to Harry, who tucked it into his robes and smiled
at her in relief. “Well, we’ll see what
happens, huh?” Ginny ran over beside him
as they all prepared to take the Floo over to Grimmauld Place.
The group of friends slid coughing and spluttering out of
the grate, covered in soot until Ginny pointed her wand at each of them with a
cleansing charm. The portraits began to
screech in unison as they realized that more people were there – sometimes they
could come in so quietly that the vile pictures couldn’t hear and it was a
blessed relief to their eardrums. They
wished they had been as lucky as they trouped down to the kitchen amidst the cacophony. Mrs. Weasley greeted each of them with a
smile and hug and Tonks sat up excitedly at the sight of them. “We’ve got it,” Ginny told her out of the
side of her mouth as she sat down with her tea.
The Auror beamed around at the new arrivals and as soon as Mrs. Weasley
left the kitchen chasing after Kreacher (the nasty house elf was attempting to make
off with the tea cozy and three saucers) the students told her all about the
potion.
“We’ll give it to him right before Snape brings his werewolf
potion,” Ron assured her. Right on cue,
the portraits began to howl again and Professor Snape swirled into the kitchen
in search of the Headmaster. He stopped and glared around the room,
acknowledging Tonks’ greeting with a nod, and then swept out, robes flying.
“He really does
look like a big bat,” Ron noted, taking a huge bite out of his scone. “If he flapped his robes any harder, he might
take to flight.” Harry laughed and Tonks
regaled them all with stories of her interactions with the bad-tempered Slytherin. Hermione and Ginny whispered to each other
planning how they would get the potion to Lupin, when Mrs. Weasley came back in
and announced that Remus was here, and would Nymphadora
like to bring him a cup of her tea as well as a nice scone? They all jumped, not expecting that their
chance would come so soon. Molly Weasley
looked at them oddly but shook her head and went in search of Kreacher, having
seen him trying to smuggle Crookshanks up to his room
moments earlier.
They huddled around the tray that Molly had left them, and
Hermione poured out two cups of tea “What if he gets suspicious that you’re not
drinking?” she pointed out as she carefully emptied the contents of the glass
vial that Harry handed her. She marked
the cup with a small smudge of blueberry from one of the scones that she piled
on a plate next to the cups. “Now,
Tonks, use magic to levitate the tray
to Remus. You know how clumsy you are,
and that’s all the potion we have so you won’t want to
break anything,” Hermione lectured.
The trembling Auror nodded and waved her wand at the tray
that held her all hopes for the future.
She disappeared beyond the door and the friends began to laugh and talk
about what Lupin’s reaction would be. Moments later, Tonks reappeared looking
panicked and holding one hand to her chest.
“HERMIONE!!!!
I took the tray in, and Severus was there too! I tried to leave, but Remus thought I was
bringing both of them tea…what are we going to DO????” she cried in distress.
Hermione stood and stared.
“But….the marked cup?”
Nymphadora Tonk
looked back at her, panic-stricken and close to tears. She waved her hands in front of her face for
air and blurted, “Severus drank it!!!!!!!!”
Hermione fainted.
