It was that time again. She could feel the need rising up, no matter how hard she pushed to suppress it. The insatiable hunger was so strong she could practically taste the thick, warm, sweet fluid slipping down her throat. She could smell it running though their veins. She could feel their hearts beating. She imagined the exhilaration when that beating began to slow as their crimson liquid filled her. It was so primitive, so animalistic; she hated it. But she couldn’t stop it. She slipped away into an empty classroom as she felt herself begin the ritual change. She hadn’t even realized the sun was beginning to set. She damned herself for not paying more attention to the time.
She locked the down behind her, and turned to find herself facing a mirror. The transformation was always so fascinating. At first, her skin would begin to pale, but it had been so months since the sun had truly touched her, that there was not much of a difference anymore. The very slight ethereal glow emitted from her now flawless skin, as though she were a porcelain doll. Her usually unruly hair fell in perfect, gentle, black waves down to her waist. Her bright green eyes were hypnotic. She was naturally thin and curvaceous. The last part of the transformation was always the elongation of her top canine teeth. She slightly tilted her head to the left as she surveyed her reflection in the mirror. She was perfect now.
Her heightened senses told her that the hallway was empty, most everyone was at the Great Hall enjoying their dinner. It was time to her to enjoy hers as well. She practically glided out of the room, through the halls, and slipped unnoticed out of the castle, and headed for the Forbidden Forest. As always, she traveled deep into the forest, where the horrid creatures dwelled. She never felt quite as guilty when she took their lives, as she did when she took the life of an innocent creature. The air grew thicker with moisture as she moved further into the forest, the foliage grew denser. She slowed her hasted pace and took a deep breathe. She could smell one. She wasn’t sure what the creature was, she’d never cared enough to look into it, but it was a nasty thing. The first time she’d laid eyes upon one, it had been sneaking up behind her and had tried to knock her over. It was some sort of cat, like a deformed panther. It’s legs were grotesquely long, it’s body was short and thin, and it’s eyes were wild. The evil that possessed these creatures radiated from them. She stopped, and crouched down between two small brushes. The vibrations in the ground grew stronger as she waited. It was close. Very close. Just a few more moments…
She reached out faster than the human or wizards eye could see, and sunk her long nails into it’s neck as she pulled it to the dirt. It didn’t even have time to make a sound before she twisted it’s neck and paralyzed it. It lay perfectly still as she dropped to her knees and bent over it. Her teeth pierced it’s lightly furred. It felt so sinfully good to empty it’s veins. She sat back as she calmed her racing heart.
As her breathing slowed, she began to transform again. Her teeth shrank to normal size, her unruly brown hair returned, her skin lost it’s glow, and her eyes took on their natural color. The only thing that she ever retained in her human form was her heightened senses. She could always hear or feel footsteps from hundreds of feet away if she was concentrating, she could smell everyone and everything, she could see even in the darkest night, and she could tell you what season it is by tasting the pollen in the air. Her movements were always fluid, graceful, and impossibly fast when she wished.
Standing up, she brushed the dirt from her robes and straightened then up. She lifted her robes away from herself and checked for blood. Not one spot; she’d done this one too many times. What should have been such a terribly messy action, she had preformed without spilling a drop. It had become as natural as breathing. She laughed to herself. Who would have ever thought that she, the good girl that she used to be, would be sneaking to and from the Forbidden Forest getting her own, special, dinner while everyone else was at the Great Hall munching away at theirs.
Turning, she headed out of the forest and made her way back towards the castle. Leaving the forest was never a problem. Nothing ever bothered her as she left. It was as though they sensed who she was, what she was. She frightened them, as she should. At times, she frightened herself. She really did hate what she was, but there was nothing she could do about it; there was no one for her to turn to. If anyone found out what she was, she’d be outcast from the civilized wizarding world. A creature of the darkness, that’s what she was now. She couldn’t deny the evil that was inside of her, though she tried so hard to. She constantly wondered how no one else had sensed it. She walked around school all day long, right under Albus Dumbledore’s nose, and not one person seemed to suspect a thing. Although, she was waiting for the spells she had been using to disguise herself to react with a daily assignment in Transfiguration or Charms class. The slight modifications she had made to a couple spells was probably the only reason her secret remained a secret.
Small amounts of light were peaking between the trees. She slower her pace as she neared the edge of the forest. There were no students outside, which meant they were all still at the Great Hall. She quickly walked across the vast Hogwarts grounds and made her way back into the castle. Harry and Ron would immediately go to the library to look for her after they had their fill of dinner, so the library is where she headed. Luckily, the library was void of all life, including teachers. It usually was during dinner. She made her way through the library to her favorite table in a back corner of the large room. She grabbed a book before she sat down. She had planned to read until Harry and Ron arrived, but she suddenly felt so tired. Immediately after a feeding, she was so exhilarated, she felt like she could do anything. But the adrenaline had worked it’s way out of her system, and now all that was left was exhaustion. She laid her head down on top of the open book, her eyes closed, and she drifted off into another world.
“Hermione.” She thought she heard her name being called. A gentle hand was touching her shoulder. “Hermione.” The voice urged her again. She cracked open her eye a bit, and found herself looking at the one and only Harry Potter.
“You missed dinner because you fell asleep in the library. Again. How do you do that? I mean, I fall asleep in the library, but that’s because I’m bored, and I’d never miss dinner because I was sitting in here,” Ron stated.
“Oh shush Ron, I was just trying to,” Hermione glanced at the book in front of her, “read up on a potion Professor Snape mentioned in class the other day. I think it might be one of our upcoming assignments.”
“I think you’re going to study yourself to death,” Harry said. “I brought you a few leftovers from dinner and a bit of pumpkin juice, so you at least wont die of starvation first.” Hermione laughed to herself as she took the food. At the increased rate she needed to feed, two or three times a week now, she very well might just do that. She could only use falling asleep in random places throughout the castle and the Hogwarts grounds trying to study in a quiet place as an excuse for missing for an hour or 2 so many times. Harry and Ron were not idiots, they would begin suspecting something soon. Secrets were hard to keep from them.
“You okay ‘Mione?” Ron asked, his brows furrowed with a bit of concern. She snapped back to reality.
“Oh yes, sorry. I’m still a little tired, that’s all. We should head back to Gryffindor and I’ll head to bed after I shower,” she replied.
“Don’t forget to eat something though. You’ll make yourself sick,” Ron reminded her. While she didn’t seem to need to eat the same kind of food as her peers anymore, she did enjoy the taste. Her enhanced senses did include taste, so regular food had turned into more of a pleasure than a necessity.
“Don’t worry, I’m going to take a nice long bath, and I’ll eat while I’m laying in the tub,” she said as they started off for the Gryffindor tower. As Head Girl, she had her own private rooms near the portrait of the Fat Lady. She could still enter and exit the Gryffindor dormitories and spent time in the common room there, but private rooms made it easier for her to patrol the hallways and reach the other house dormitories as well. Having her own little living room with plenty of bookshelves, and her own, rather luxurious bathroom and bedroom was certainly nice. With her new illness, as she liked to refer to it sometimes, it was wonderful to have a place where she could remove the spells she had to wear daily, and relax without worrying about anyone walking in on her. It made it much easier to work on modifying spells to help her hide the illness, and a place to research and brew things pertaining to the experimental potion she was working on.
“Here we are,” Harry said as they stopped in front of the entrance to her rooms. Unlike the Gryffindor dorms, she simply had a barrier that she spoke the password to and stepped through into her rooms. “Make sure you seal the barrier when you get through,” he warned her as he did every night. There was no danger out of the ordinary danger of Voldemort remaining alive, but Harry was always protective of her, he and Ron both.
“I know Harry, I always do. Goodnight,” she said as she hugged them and gave them both a kiss on the cheek. “See you in the morning.” She spoke her password and stepped through.
