To say that
Hermione had been surprised to hear that Draco Malfoy was in Hogwarts was an
understatement. Ever since his departure after the death of Dumbledore, the
school had been full of tension with many fights breaking out in the corridors
between rival Houses.
But when she had
been summoned to Headmistress McGonagall’s office, Hermione had been expecting
to receive some minor duties. As Head Girl, she was expected to look after the
students of the school and make sure that everything ran smoothly but looking
after Draco Malfoy had not been one of her ‘things to do’.
“Malfoy?” she
asked upon walking in the study, noticing the platinum blond hair and the
sullen expression of the boy sitting in one of the comfy armchairs.
He briefly looked
up at her but on seeing who it was, turned away from the brunette witch.
Hermione tried not to take it as it obviously was – a personal affront – and
instead turned to the Headmistress, confusion showing on her face.
Minerva smiled at
the intelligent young woman and began to explain the tale of the young man’s
arrival. “Well, as you can see Miss Granger, Mister Malfoy has returned to this
school. We are giving him solace here as the teachers and I believe that this
is one of the only places that he will be secure in.” she explained.
Hermione shook
her head. “But… H-he as good as killed the Headmaster. He nearly murdered
Professor Dumbledore. He’s working for the other side, Headmistress!” she cried
out, losing her habitual cool in the wake of such distressing news. The news of
Dumbledore’s death had been investigated thoroughly over the summer, with many
papers featuring tributes. Matters had not been helped when Death Eaters had
leaked to the papers that it was Snape and not the younger Malfoy who had
killed the formidable Dumbledore.
The Headmistress
frowned slightly. She had expected better of the Head Girl but had perhaps misjudged
her tolerance of the Slytherin. “He has taken Veritaserum and various other
potions which assure us that he is telling the truth. Will that reassure you,
Miss Granger?” she asked.
Hermione looked
at Draco sharply, noticing the almost defiant look on his face. His pale blond
hair was longer than normal and not slicked back as he preferred but his air of
haughtiness still remained. The grey eyes that stared back at her were not full
of malicious intent as before but filled with loathing and hate. “I-I suppose
so. He is going to kept in high security though, right?” she asked, not wanting
to offend Draco but wanting to ensure the security of the children boarding at
the school.
“I’m not a bloody
mass murderer, Granger. Alright?” Draco snapped, the first words he had spoken
since her arrival. He looked at Hermione closely, seeing the red flush of
embarrassment rise on her cheeks and she looked towards him, dark eyes worried.
“I did some stupid stuff but I had my reasons for doing it. I shouldn’t be punished
more than once for my mistakes.”
He turned his
head to face the Headmistress and it was then that Hermione saw it. A livid red
scar running from his hairline down to the top of his ear, jagged and obviously
not yet healed. She managed to hold in her gasp but Draco felt her gasp and let
his hair fall further over his face, flushing with anger.
“I have decided
on various methods to keep Mister Malfoy safe in Hogwarts. As you would expect,
he can not go back into Slytherin. If this were done, we would be purposely
endangering his life and we can not allow this to happen. For Mister Malfoy to
have his own room in the castle would also be unwise as we would not know if he
happened to be in danger. Therefore I have come up with the following
solution…” she trailed off, watching Hermione with an undecipherable look.
Hermione nodded
for the older woman to carry on, trusting her implicitly. Although Dumbledore
had been a mentor to Harry, she much preferred talking to McGonagall. She
supposed it was a female thing but she had always found Dumbledore rather
creepy with his ‘all-knowing’ attitude and cryptic clues.
“We will be
lodging Mister Malfoy in the Heads’ Suites with yourself and Anthony Goldstein.
A third room has been added as you will see upon your return. I decided to tell
the two of you separately as I know your history with Mister Malfoy is vastly
different from that of Mister Goldstein’s.” she said kindly, watching the
girl’s face change from curiosity to shock.
Hermione was lost
for words for a second, her thoughts swirling in her head. “He’s going to be living with me?” she asked, feeling
somewhat nauseous at the prospect of sharing a bathroom and living space with
someone she and her best friends disliked.
Draco rolled his
eyes. “Honestly Granger, I haven’t got dragon pox. You’ll be perfectly safe…
It’s not like I’m going to lay a hand on your Mudbl-“ he started, cut off by
the Headmistress.
“That’s enough,
Mister Malfoy. As you already know… You will not be living in this castle if you continue with your racist
tendencies. Your language is going to be observed strictly in the next few
weeks and you shall be reprimanded if you revert to your previous behaviour.”
she told the sullen Slytherin, ignoring the look of arrogance that seemed to
permanently grace his features.
“Yes,
Headmistress.” he answered glumly, shooting a nasty look at Hermione as if to
suggest that it was her fault.
Minerva nodded as
if satisfied that they were going to be civil to one another. “Now Miss
Granger, I give you permission to not attend classes for the rest of the day
whilst you help Mister Malfoy settle in and be his guide around the school. You
have a higher profile than the Head Boy and it’ll set a good example for the
younger students of this school.” she pointed out, seeing Hermione about to
protest.
Hermione rose
from her seat and waited for Draco to unfold his long body from the armchair,
only reaching up to his shoulder when he was standing. “Come on, then.” she
muttered, saying her goodbyes to the Headmistress before striding out of the
office, Draco strolling behind her.

“I can’t believe
you managed this, Malfoy. I don’t know how you did it but you better be
genuine.” she snapped at the blond following her, not even bothering to turn
her head to address him.
Draco glared at
the back of her head, covered by bushy, brown hair. “It’s none of your business
really so I’d prefer not to discuss it.” he drawled, following the witch up to the
fifth floor. He was slightly unnerved at being above the ground level of the
castle, having only slept in the dungeons except for the few times when he had
needed medical care.
Hermione looked
around at him then, unused to his calmness. “Well, it is my business if you’re endangering the students, Malfoy.” she
pointed out as she led them down a dimly-lit corridor, only one window lighting
it up.
“If McGonagall
trusts me then you’ll have to trust me. I’m not telling you anymore than she’s
told you.” Draco said, sounding pompous and slightly defensive. He knew damn
well that whatever he told Hermione, her cronies would know.
Hermione clenched
her jaw and didn’t say anything in return, merely stopping abruptly and almost
swearing at Draco when he walked into her. “Watch where you’re going!” she
exclaimed, looking up at him.
He shrugged. “You
shouldn’t stop so quickly, Mud-Granger.” he said, correcting his sentence at
the last moment. “We’re here then?” he asked.
Hermione nodded
and muttering the password “Nargles” loud enough for Draco to hear, the
portrait of the mermaid swung open to reveal a comfortably-furnished living
room.
“Well, this is
the common room.” Hermione said, gesturing to the mish-mash of furniture.
Although it didn’t match, all the house colours were incorporated and plush
furniture covered the room. Rugs covered the wooden floor and a fire crackled
in the hearth, casting a golden glow on the room. Draco had never been in a
room that felt more ‘homely’ than this one.
“Let me guess, it
isn’t good enough for you?” Hermione asked, noticing his lack of words.
Draco shook his
head quickly before remembering that he wasn’t telling Hermione anything. “No,
it’s fine.” he said, not wanting to elaborate. He could imagine Hermione
fitting in very well with the décor, imagining her sitting by the fire and
correcting her homework.
“Right, I’ll show
you the bathroom then.” Hermione said, apparently unaware of Draco’s wandering
thoughts. Following the smaller girl into a doorway, he found himself in a
fair-sized bathroom, complete with a bathtub and shower. The bathtub was a
smaller version of that in the Prefect’s Bathroom, with many taps containing
different coloured bubbles and various scents.
Once again, it
was smaller than anything Draco had been accustomed to but he soon accepted
that this was better than nothing. “It’s great. Could you show me to my room,
please? I just want to be on my own.” he said, forgetting that he’d meant to
ignore Granger.
“Um… Well I
suppose it’s this door.” Hermione said, going towards a door opposite the one
they’d entered from. Draco noticed the doors on the opposite sides of the room
and assumed that they had to be the entrances to Goldstein and Granger’s rooms.
Opening the door,
Hermione poked her head inside, surprised to see the lack of personal
possessions. Then, she belated realised that Malfoy probably had nothing
personal. She doubted that he’d been anywhere near his home since being on the
run three months before. “Here you go, Malfoy.” she said, a small smile on her
lips.
Standing back,
she let Draco walk past her and into his room. She watched as he surveyed his
new surroundings, looking wary and slightly sad as he looked at the almost
spartan room. It paled in comparison to Hermione’s own room, photos, soft toys
and possessions littering it.
“Right, see you
later, Granger. Knock on my door when you want to go down to dinner.” he said,
sounding suspiciously like his old self as he shut the door in Hermione’s face and
walked over to his bed. Sitting down on it, he looked around and held his head
in his hands, resisting the urge to just collapse and cry.
Things could only
get better, right?

A/N: This is my first fanfic that I’ve posted on here and I’m
quite nervous about it. I expect it to be about 20 chapters, give or take a few
and depending on how long the chapters are. Reviews are always welcome and I would be glad to hear off everyone
who reads this! It only takes about 30 seconds and I don’t think people realise
how much authors want feedback on how they’re progessing.
I hope to have
Part 2 of this up by the weekend!
