Ilona stood
looking at the partially built castle. Even at the mid stage it was an amazing
sight. It was also situated on a beautiful parcel of land overlooking a lake.
It was so peaceful. She felt as if she could live the rest of her life here.
“Oh, Godric,
it’s lovely.” Her voice held a suitable amount of awe. It was lovely, and it
would look amazing when finished. She could almost see the finished castle in
her minds eye.
“It’s not even
finished yet.” The tall man next to her replied. He was obviously happy about
her liking it. He had his hand in the building. He was proud of it. He looked
down at her, “Do you love me as much as this unfinished castle?” Ilona smiled
up at him. She took one of her hands and placed it in his.
“Of course I
love you. How could I not?” Ilona answered with an open smile.
Godric was, in a
single word, golden. His hair was gold, wavy, and trimmed short. His skin was
tanned and even his eyes were amber. His breeches and leather boots were black.
His red tunic was trimmed with gold. He stood at six foot four inches. At his
hip was a sword. He seemed to have the body of a warrior instead of a wizard, a
warrior- wizard. His shoulders were broad and under his tunic his chest was
well muscled.
Ilona was five foot
five, and had dark brown curly hair that flowed to her hips. Her eyes were
hazel that seemed to morph more towards whatever color she was wearing. She was
slender with a small bone structure. Her face had a fae
like quality with high cheekbones, a small nose, and an easy smile. She seemed
to radiate kindness, and she had a fondness for fluffy animals. She was swathed
in a sapphire blue gown that had long belled sleeved and a hem that brushed the
ground. The neckline was square with delicate lace trim. The lace trim was
echoed on the hem. Low on her hips sat a silver chain belt.
“I know it’s not
complete, but it will be an amazing site when it’s finished.” She smiled up at
the man she had known since childhood. Her parents land sat beside his. He was
several years older than she, but that had not bothered them for the last two
years. When Ilona had spouted into womanhood Godric had started paying more
calls. Ilona was enthralled with the beautiful, grand wizard.
“If you take a
walk, do not go too deep into the woods.” He warned her, “It’s dangerous and
you could get lost.” He was worried about her. He wanted to keep her safe from
everything. If he could come up with a spell that would keep her from harm, he
would cast it upon her.
“I won’t. I
promise.” At her words Godric leaned over and placed a kiss on Ilona’s
forehead. A loud crack sounded when Godric disapparated.
Ilona walked towards the lake. It was flat as glass today. There was not even a
slight breeze to ripple the surface. It looked like she could walk on it, not
that she could. She headed towards a large tree for it looked inviting and the
shade it would provide would shelter her fair skin from the bright sun. She
hummed a tune on the way. She loved to sing. She might not have been the best
at spells, but she had a beautiful singing voice. In fact it was her special
gift. It was called ‘The Sirens Song’. She could coerce others to do and feel
things by singing. When she sang a sad song people would cry. When she sang a
happy song people would smile and even dance. They might do more if she put
enough thought behind it, but she was afraid to do so. She was afraid to take
away a persons will that way. She was afraid of being hunted down. She loved to
sing so much; she did not want people abhorring it.
This gift made
up for her sore use of spells. No matter how much she studied and practiced she
could only do the most rudimentary spells and charms. It was irritating.
Ilona stopped
abruptly when she saw someone sitting under a tree. He was wearing dark green
robes with silver along the sleeve cuffs. His black hair was pulled back
tightly at the nape of his neck giving the illusion of short hair. He was thin,
bordering on being too thin, with sharp features. He was not what one would
call handsome, his feature were too hawk like for that. He also had a look of
arrogance. It was like he knew he could do anything. If he stood he would have
stood six feet tall. He was scribbling in a black leather bound book with a
black quill. He looked up with blue eyes as Ilona approached. They were cold as
a winter sky and seemed to see right through her. They mad her want to shiver.
“I’m sorry. I
didn’t realize anyone was here.” Ilona felt the need to apologize because he radiated
displeasure at being disturbed. When all he did was continue to look at her,
she blundered on, “My name’s Ilona.” After a pause she added, “Of Woodhurst.” She stood there, feeling uneasy.
“Yes, I know.
Godric brought you here yesterday.” He continued to look at her. He looked
bored and annoyed at the same time. Ilona felt the need to fidget, but
suppressed the urge.
“You must be
Salazar Slytherin.” She felt silly. Of course that was who this man was. He was
the only other male around besides Godric. Godric told her of his three
partners before he brought her here.
“A keen observation, madam.” He drawled. He was busy writing
magic’s for the castle, and did not want to be disturbed. This made Ilona feel
like a child. She felt cowed and a bit angry at the same time.
“Yes, well, I’ll
leave you to your work.” She started to back away slowly like she was afraid to
be pounced.
“That is very
magnanimous of you, madam.” He intoned before turning back to the leather bound
book. Ilona bit her lip and turned around. She was a lighthearted person who
liked people. People treated her kindly because that is how she treated them.
This one was different. Of course, his wit seemed to be quicker than hers. She
stared to walk away. Maybe she could draw him out of it, but not right now. He
did seem awfully busy. All four of them were working so hard at building the
castle. They estimated that it would be done within the year.
Ilona headed
toward the unfinished castle. Maybe Helga had some free time. Ilona took an
instant liking to Helga Hufflepuff the moment Godric
introduced her to the matronly woman yesterday. She was short, a good two
inches shorter than Ilona. She was middle aged, and her graying hair was always
pulled back in a bun. She was plump and congenial with a round smiling face and
brown kind eyes. She wore cheerful yellow robes with three black stripes at the
sleeve cuffs.
Ilona reached
the castle. Some portions were finished. The dungeons were completely finished,
and so was the first floor. The second floor was mostly completed, but the
rooms needed some tweaking yet. The third floor was just a skeleton and still
needed many walls. Everything above that still needed to be done. There was so
much work, but the four were confidant. Ilona found Helga in the Kitchen.
“There you are deary. Would you care for some tea?” Sure enough there was
tea on the table. With a grateful smile Ilona sat down with Helga to enjoy some
tea.
“I met Salazar
today.” Ilona mentioned. Helga took a sip of her tea.
“Oh?” Helga gave
the conversation a nudge waiting for the girl to say more.
“He seemed
very,” Ilona groped for the right word, “busy.” She finished lamely. Helga
watched the young woman’s face closely.
“He was rude,
was he?” Helga shook her head, “It would be out of character for him not to be.
His head seems to be filled with as many ideas as Rowena’s.”
“He was writing
in a book when I came upon him. He didn’t seem to take kindly to my presence.” Ilona
looked into her tea as if it had all the answers. That man had made her uneasy.
She did not care for the feeling.
“Don’t let it
bother you, dear. He’s a studious man. It’s best to stay out of his way,
besides you have Godric to attend you.” Helga added a bit slyly. This made Ilona’s
head shoot up.
“It’s not as
though we are engaged. No banns have been posted.” Ilona took too large a drink
of her hot tea and grimaced.
“Has he asked?”
Helga was all smiles.
“Well, yes, a
few times. I never really took him seriously. He sees a lot of girls.” She
added. He was always flirting with other women.
“I think he’s
smitten with you.” Helga was still smiling.
“Who’s smitten
with her?” Godric strode up to the table to two women were at. Ilona smiled,
but Helga beat her too it.
“All the lads in the next town.” She sounded good natured.
“Then I shall
have to fend them off. They cannot have her.” Godric smiled his winning smile.
“Rowena and I are having trouble with the east tower. Will you come?” Godric addressed Helga more seriously. He was
holding his wand and lightly thumping it on his thigh. Helga nodded and patted Ilona’s
hand before following Godric out the door. Godric gave her a wave before
disappearing through the aperture.
Ilona finished her
tea slowly before leaving the castle again. She started to think if Godric was
serious. What if he really did wanted to marry her? He
was one of the greatest wizards of her time. Her mind seemed to spin. She
didn’t want to think about it right now. She decided to take another walk to
clear her head.
Ilona headed
towards the woods, the shade looked so inviting. The woods looked so peaceful.
She lifted the hem of her gown so as not to get it caught on the rough ground
cover. The dappled light was beautiful. She could hear birds chirping and small
animals rooting about in the brush. She wished she had brought a book with her.
She kept walking through the woods, thinking nothing in particular. She sat on
a fallen log and looked around. There really was not much direct sunlight here.
The more she looked, the more her bad feeling grew. She was lost. She did the exact
opposite of what Godric had told her to do. She felt stupid. She stood up and
took a good look. She took so many turns while she walked she was completely
turned around. She sighed and picked a direction. She only had taken a step
when she heard a voice that made her jump,
“Are you lost?”
The voice was sharp as a blade. Ilona turned towards it and saw Salazar leaning
calmly against a large tree.
“No, I know
exactly where I am.” He raised her hackles and Ilona did not like that. She
turned to her left and started to walk.
“The castle lies
in that direction.” Ilona turned around to see a long tapered finger point in
the opposite direction from the one she had just been walking. She blushed
hotly feeling very foolish. She walked pasted him in the direction indicated.
He fell in step next to her. “We wouldn’t want you getting lost again, now
would we?” His voice was coldly teasing. This just made Ilona blush again.
The journey
started in silence. Ilona didn’t really want to break it, but she just had to
know, “How did you find me? Were you following me?”
“I was gathering
ingredients I needed. I saw you passing. I thought you might become lost.” He
did not even smile to damper his implication, and it made Ilona’s blush rise.
She felt foolish. The rest of the walk was spent in silence. It felt like and
uncomfortable silence to Ilona. When they reached the edge of the forest Ilona
turned to Salazar.
“Thank you for
leading me out. I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful earlier. I’m sorry.” Before
she could ramble more, she fled his presence. Blue eyes watched her escape.
That's all of chapter one. More chapters are one the way. Comments are always loved.
