  • The Greatest Gift

Christmas Eve found Hermione sitting alone in the window seat in her private room. She was glad she’d come back to Hogwarts to complete her education, but she missed Harry and Ron. She’d never known the school without them in it and now, halfway through the school year she was feeling melancholy and lethargic. Even the threat of an increase in the work load after the Christmas holiday was not enough to drag her out of her depressed state. The latest scrap of parchment from Harry lay discarded at her side as she stared out into the night, watching snow flakes falling. The letters that they sent her were usually devoid of any useful news; the fear of the information being intercepted by the enemy was too great. Still, she was Head Girl, which meant she had this room to herself. She only really left the room to attend classes and patrol the school corridors, as her homework took up the majority of her spare time and research for Ron and Harry took up the rest.

Crookshanks jumped into her lap, purring loudly and breaking her from her reverie. She giggled and scratched him behind the ears.

“Hungry are you?” she asked lifting him in her arms and walking over to his food bowl. She took a handful of biscuits and dropped them into the small ceramic dish.

“This will have to do you,” she told him. He scowled at her but she shrugged, “You are getting fat.” She poked his ever expanded belly to prove her point. He turned his head and began to eat the meagher offering. She looked at her watch. It was nine thirty and she decided that she would get an early start on patrolling tonight. Christmas Eve was likely to make the rest of the students forget the curfew and for a moment she regretted that she never seemed to be able to shrug off her responsibilities and just enjoy the “silly” season like her class-mates. There weren’t too many students left at the school for the holidays anyway so she hoped that they would be out long. She pulled on her coat and made her way across the common room to Justin’s room and knocked lightly. She heard some scuffling before the door opened.

“Justin, I was hoping to get an early night. Do you mind patrolling early?” she asked him. He rubbed his eyes, nodding.

“I feel asleep studying again,” he said with a sigh as he grabbed his wand and a jacket.

“Oh, I couldn’t even get motivated to start studying, so you are one up on me,” she said with a smile. He smiled back and they left the head suite and moved down to the Great Hall.

There were a few seventh years from different houses loitering around. Hermione and Justin didn’t bother them, but Hermione caught Sally-Ann Perks eyes and tapped her watch indicating that curfew was very near. The other girl nodded and turned to her friends to start to wind up their talk.

They left the Great Hall and made their way in silence to the dungeons before back upstairs to the Astronomy Tower, which was one of the popular hang out’s for Hogwarts young lovers. After shooing a few couples back to their common rooms. They headed back downstairs.

“Should we check out by the lake?” Justin asked. Hermione thought for a moment, thinking it was unlikely that many students would brave the cold for a few moments together, but unwilling to shirk their responsibilities for her own comfort. She nodded with a sigh. She was tired, but they should make sure that the amorous were all inside the castle. They stepped out into the night and Hermione instantly shivered.

“Lumos,” Justin muttered behind chattering teeth. His wand cast a soft glow and they made their way down to the lake. They found Ernie and Susan locked in a passionate embrace and with barely concealed disappointment; Justin took 5 points from his own house. He looked at Hermione and she rolled her eyes. He smiled and Hermione turned to continue along the bank. They didn’t find anyone else, but Justin leaned against a tree for a moment.

“I feel like I’m blowing it,” he said with sadness in his voice. She looked at him, unable to think of a thing to say. It was hard on both of them, trying to fit in their homework and their Head student duties. He was looking at his feet and she was about to say something comforting when she noticed something behind him that made her heart stop. She fixed her eyes on the pale face and blue-grey eyes peeking at them from behind a tree. She felt her blood run cold.

“Malfoy!” she thought. She opened her mouth to say something when he lifted a long slender finger and pressed it to his lips, his eyes pleading with her not to say anything. She’d never know why, but she had never seen the Slytherin look so desperate, so she held her tongue.

“Hermione?” Justin asked noticing the look on her face. He followed her gaze but before he could turn all the way around the face disappeared into the darkness. When he saw that she was staring at nothing, he turned back to her, “What is it?”

She shook her head and looked at him.

“Sorry, just got lost in thought for a second,” she muttered before asking if they could go inside now. He nodded and they headed back towards the castle. Once they reached their rooms she excused herself, pleading exhaustion and went straight to her room. She closed the door of her room and pressed her ear against the wood. When she heard the click of Justin’s door she eased her own door open again and slipped out of their suites. She had to find out if she had just seen what she thought she had seen. It was probably her over exhausted mind playing tricks on her.

She let herself out of the castle and drew her coat tightly around her as she jogged down to the lake to spot where she had seen that face. She walked a little way into the trees that lined the shore of the lake. She searched behind all the trunks before leaning up against one.

“That’s it, you are cracking up, Granger!” she muttered to herself under her breath. She pushed herself off the tree and took a few steps towards the castle when she heard a crunch in the snow behind her. She felt a hand clamp over her mouth and an arm grab her around the waist, dragging her backwards into the trees.

“Maybe coming out here alone was not such a great idea!” she thought as panic began to take her over. After a few moments she was tossed roughly onto the snow laden ground.

“I should have known you wouldn’t have been able to resist coming back here, Granger,” he said looking down at her.

“What are you doing here, Malfoy?” she asked, her grip on her wand tightening nervously.

“Why do you care, Mudblood?” he snarled.

“Fine, then I’ll report you to McGonagall,” she said standing and brushing the snow from her backside. She looked up and found a wand pointing right at her.

“Maybe I’ll just kill you,” Malfoy said, but there was no conviction in his voice and they both knew it. They stood like that for what felt like an eternity. Then Malfoy’s hand started to shake slightly. Slowly, she reached up and took the wand from him.

“You aren’t a murderer, Malfoy,” she said softly. He sunk to his knees in the snow, a look of complete resignation on his face. She looked down at him and for the first time noticed that he was painfully thin and even paler than normal. To her surprise, she felt her ache for him. She took a step closer to him, her hand outstretched to touch him and he looked up at her warily. She stopped and let her hand drop back to her side.

“Why are you here?” she said softly. He shrugged.

“Where have you been sleeping?” she asked, aware that he wouldn’t be able to just rent a room in Hogsmeade after his part in the attack on the school at the end of the last school year and Dumbledore’s demise.

“In the forest,” he said. Her heart lurched. Not only would it be freezing but the forest was not at all safe, especially at night. She wanted to help him and she looked towards the castle, where she had been sleeping in warmth and relative comfort. She felt very selfish. To think that just a few hours ago she’d sat looking out of the window feeling sorry for herself. Nobody deserved to sleep out here, not even Malfoy.

“Look, if you want, I can sneak you into the castle and you can have a decent night’s sleep and a hot shower,” she said, not really expecting him to accept. Instead, he looked up with suspicion in his eyes.

“Why would you do that?” he asked.

“Because I don’t believe anyone deserves to sleep in the forest with all the animals and in this cold. Besides, it’s Christmas,” she said impatiently, holding out his wand.

“Please don’t tell McGonagall I’m here,” he said looking up at her and taking back his wand. He seemed so defeated and pity for him washed over her.

“I must be out of my mind. Ok, I won’t tell, but please come up to the castle,” she said holding out her hand to him. He looked at it for a few moments before standing on his own.

“I’ll come up to the castle, but only because I’m freezing. Don’t expect us to be friends because of it, M…Granger,” he said. She didn’t miss him almost calling her “Mudblood” again, but decided to let it go. She nodded and turned back to the castle. He followed closely behind her; she could hear his foot falls in the snow. It made her nervous but she wouldn’t let him see that. For his part, Draco was watching the back of her head. He was mesmerised by her curls bouncing up and down as she walked. He remembered her when they’d first come to Hogwarts when she’d been this awkward creature with buck-teeth and too much hair. He had to admit that six years later she’d definitely changed for the better. She was much more graceful than she used to be. They reached the doors and she motioned for him to stay back for a moment as she yanked the heavy oak open. The entrance hall was deserted and she motioned him forward. They headed straight for the stairs and with her checking around every corner made their way through the corridors to the Head suite. Once again, she went first, to make sure that Justin wasn’t hanging around the common room before ushering him quickly into her room.

    He gave a whistle.

“Being Head Girl has its perks, huh Muh….um Granger,” he said. She grimaced when she heard him almost slip up again.

“You’d probably know it for yourself, if you hadn’t…,” she said shrugging her shoulders. She didn’t miss the small scowl he gave as he sat on the window seat she had been sitting at just a few hours ago. She walked over and yanked the curtains closed, hiding him from view.

“What the hell are you doing, Granger?” his muffled voice said to her.

“Getting you something to eat, now be quiet!” she stated simply before summoning a house elf and ordering a large meal. The elf didn’t question her and returned in just a few moments with a veritable feast before popping away again. She leant over the food and gave an appreciating sniff before turning to face Malfoy who had emerged from his hiding place in the window.

“That smells good,” he said and crossed over to where she was standing. She held out her hand offering him the food and he didn’t waste any time grabbing a chicken leg in one hand and a bread roll in the other. While he started eating, she crossed to the fire place and stoked the flame a bit, trying to warm the room a little more.

Draco watched her bend over the fireplace. Her school skirt rose enticingly high and he was treated to the view of her smooth thighs. He felt his groin stir and had a sudden urge to hold that softness in his arms. He knew that a lot of boys around the school found her attractive. For that matter, in fourth year the famous Bulgarian seeker, Krum had asked her, of all the girls in the school and the visiting Beauxbaton students, to the Yule Ball, so there must be something about her that he hadn’t seen. He supposed to himself that it was just that he hadn’t had any female company for six months, but when she turned around and looked at him, he couldn’t hide the lustful gaze and she blushed slightly. He liked the way the blush made her face look. It was the same flush she got when she was angry or hurt. He knew this because she’d had that colour every time he’d call her a Mudblood. He had a sudden uncomfortable revelation that this reason was precisely why he continued to call her that name, despite not actually caring about blood purity as much as he told everyone he did.

Hermione watched as Draco studied her, still chewing his food absentmindedly, seemingly happy to ignore her in favour of his thoughts. She felt a little embarrassed about her haste in bringing him up here now. Everyone in their year knew that Draco had a voracious sexual appetite that had probably been ignored while he had been on the run. Would her be entirely trustworthy? At least Justin was just in the next room if she needed him. The real question was, if Draco Malfoy turned on his infamous charm, would she be able to resist him? She had always counted herself lucky that he had reviled her so much for being a Muggle-born, because he was definitely appealing to her. Despite Harry’s wishes, Malfoy was a very clever wizard and that was something that Hermione always admired in her school-mates, even when they were public very verbal in their attacks on her. He was also an incredibly good looking young man, even if he did know it.

“Merlin knows what Harry and Ron would say if they found out that” she thought, her cheeks colouring again. She crossed the room to her closet and opened the door, watching him follow her progress from the corner of her eye. She was starting to feel very nervous about having him here. She knew that look in his eyes and it made something deep inside her ache with longing.

He watched as she took some clothes out of her wardrobe turned towards the bathroom. She paused at the door and cleared her throat.

“I, um, I’m going to have a shower,” she said smiling weakly, knowing that in his current state, this news might cause him to do something she was dreading. She was suddenly convinced that she would never survive this night with her modesty intact. She opened the door and passed through it. She locked it behind her, using both the lock and a couple of magical charms as well, praying to whatever gods happened to be listening that he would not be able to break her charms.

Draco watched the door close behind her and thanked the powers that be that the temptation had been removed, at least for the time being. A dozen unlocking charms popped into his head, but he shook it and tried not to think about Granger naked behind that door, water running over her body, her hands touching her soapy skin as she bathed. He groaned as his pants tented over his erection.

“Just stop it,” he said allowed, trying to stop the thoughts of her invading his mind. He grabbed another chicken leg and tried not to think about what it would be like to have Granger’s legs around his waist as he buried himself into her, while she screamed his name. Yes, she would be incredibly vocal, he could just see it. He gulped and turned to face the door. He could knock it down and just ravage her, he knew he could. He wondered if she let him. If she threw him out would he be able to walk away? He didn’t want to hurt her, not now that she’d been the only person to show him kindness in a very long time. No, he couldn’t do it and he didn’t think he could bear the rejection if she kicked him out. He turned back to the food and forced himself to sit and eat while he listened to the water running in the next room. He had a huge feeling of regret when the water stopped.

Hermione turned the water off and wrapped a towel around her body. However much she tried, she couldn’t help but be disappointed that Draco hadn’t forced his way into the bathroom. She had fantasised that he’d done just that while she’d been under the water. In her daydream, he’d pushed her against the wall of the shower and taken her roughly. She blushed when she thought about how she had touched herself while thinking of him, and how his name had been on her lips at the moment of her release. She dressed in the long cotton pants and tank that she had brought in with her and ran a comb through her hair. She removed the wards and charms from the door and stepped back into her room. He was sitting with his back to the door, the remains of the meal next to him.

“Did you have enough to eat?” she asked, concerned. He turned his head slightly towards the sound of her voice and nodded. He didn’t want to look at her. Looking at her would weaken his resolve, he was sure of it. He looked at the clock on her bedside. In five minutes, it would be Christmas Day. Being from a wizarding family, he had never celebrated Christmas, but being that she was a Muggle-born he knew she probably did. He suddenly wished he could give her something, just a small token to show her that he was thankful for her kindness.

“Malfoy, are you ok?” her voice said softly from right behind him. He hadn’t heard her moving so he was slightly taken aback to find that she was so close. He closed his eyes.

“Don’t touch me, Granger, or I don’t know if I’ll be able to not touch you back,” he willed her silently, not sure if he wanted her to stop or not. Rather than let her, he jumped out of his chair and strode away from her, towards the window.

She watched him go, completely confused. She knew that she had seen longing in his eyes before. Now, he was acting as though he found her completely repulsive. She didn’t understand. She crossed to her bed and climbed in. When she looked across the room to where he was standing, she was slightly surprised to find that he was gazing at her intently.

“Merry Christmas, Granger,” he said as he settled onto the window seat. She stared at him. It was such a strange thing for Malfoy to say to her that she almost laughed out loud.

“Merry Christmas, Draco,” she said quietly before extinguishing the candle and settling back onto her pillows. Across the room, she heard him snort with laughter.

    “What?” she asked with suspicion.

“All the money, the blood purity and aristocratic rubbish, and yet neither of parents has ever shown me the sort of kindness you have tonight,” he said into the darkness.

“Oh, Malfoy,” he heard her whisper before her bed rustled. He looked up to see the shadow of her crossing the room before she climbed onto the seat and straddled him, pulling him up into the warmest embrace he’d every experienced. She smelled fresh and clean. He sunk his head down onto her shoulder and just let the smell and feel of her wash over him.

“Granger,” he said finally. She sat back a little and looked at him. He could see the moonlight shining in her eyes.

“Yes,” she said and he noticed that her breathing shallowed and quickened.

“I just wanted to say I’m sorry for acting like an ass for the past few years.” He stared straight into her eyes and waited with baited breath as she leaned forward and tentatively placed her lips upon his, every so softly. He felt his eyes close and time stopped. His heart was beating so fast he was sure she could hear it. He could feel himself started to get hard and wondered in she knew what she was doing.

She felt the hardness of him pressing upwards into her thigh as she let her tongue slide along his lips before pushing past them into the warmth of his mouth. She heard him sigh and a small smile danced across her mouth and she grew bolder, pushing herself down against his erection. He moaned into her mouth and she was surprised to find that she liked the feeling of power it gave her. She pushed him back and leant her body over his, still exploring the inside of his mouth.

Draco was in danger of being completely overwhelmed by Hermione. He should have known that she’d be dominant. She was so bossy about everything else and always liked to be in control. He didn’t know if this was such a good idea. He’d wondered why he was feeling so uncomfortable about kissing her when he wanted to so much. He couldn’t help the moan that escaped his lips when he felt her fingers curl into his blond locks. Maybe he’d never truly cared about anyone before, being taught from an early age that very few people were worthy of his respect. But despite everything, her birth, her friends and the fact that he was constantly putting her down in front of others, he did respect Hermione Granger. She was smart and brilliant.

“And entirely too good with her tongue,” he thought as she trailed kisses across his jaw and took his ear lobe into her mouth, sucking and licking it.

“Hermione,” he breathed into her neck. She pulled her head away from his and looked at him. It felt completely surreal that she was in her room kissing Draco Malfoy and that he had just called her by her first name.

“I…I want you, please don’t think I don’t,” he began, his normal arrogance when dealing with girls complete eluding him now, “But I can’t do this, not now.” She tilted her head and his eyes, now accustomed to the dark could see the confusion on her face.

“I’ll have to leave, you know I will. I’ll have to turn myself in eventually and then I’ll probably be locked up in Azkaban for helping the Death Eaters into Hogwarts and fleeing with the man that murdered him. You deserve someone better than me,” he said. Hermione knew right away that the admission he had just made was the hardest thing he’d ever had to say. For someone of his birth and background to be telling her that she was too good for him…well, the Malfoy ancestors would be turning in their graves. She nodded and pressed her lips back to his.

“Thank you. That’s the best gift you could’ve given me,” she said as she pulled him up and across the room to her bed. She tugged him down onto the mattress with her and wrapped her arms around him.

“Good night, Draco,” she whispered into his hair.

“Good night, Hermione,” he whispered back before drifting into the most contented sleep he’d had in over a year.
