Chapter one
Hermione stood in the very back of Florrish and Blots eyeing the ancient leather bound tomb on the highest shelf. If only Harry or Ron were here surely they could reach it, she thought to herself. Of course they weren’t there. Truth told; she hadn’t the foggiest idea where they were, after Harry’s birthday they had begun the horocrux hunt. And the boys liked it that way, no chance of Death Eaters (or Ginny for that matter) torturing it out of her. Every few days a letter would come asking for information about things only Hermione would have the sense to remember and if she didn’t she’d find out. Now she was on her way back to school with out her best friends, and she feared it would be an unnaturally long year.
She stretched one more time -willing her arm to grow several inches, it didn’t comply- and then stomped her foot and began to sigh. It was interrupted by the smell that graced her senses, Malfoy! She inhaled again. Definetly Malfoy. She peered through the bookshelf in front of her, expecting to catch a glimpse of the tow headed boy.
How ridiculous, no ones seen hide nor hair of him and suddenly you think he’d show up in the middle of Diagon Alley the day before school resumes, Ron’s right I am mental, she scolded herself. Sniffing round like some prized pointer in Horse and Hound, honestly.
Hermione stepped back and focused on the task at hand. Suddenly the hair on the back of her neck stood on end, and her nostrils were filled with that sent, again! His sent.
Ever since she’d gotten close enough to slap him in third year, she could pick it out. At first she convinced herself it was rubbish, something outside must have smelled good, or maybe Crabbe or Goyle (disgusting as that notion was) but not him. Then one day he’d come round a corner and crashed into Harry, and she’d smelled it before she even saw him. Of course after that, she’d preformed a series of trial and error test just to be sure, but in the end, she was right. She defined it as spicy, and crisp with a touch of vanilla, her best guess anyway, without an actual sample.
. And here she was in the back corner of a book store and it smelled of him, she was determined, to find out why. Just as she turned around to seek out his hiding place she ran smack into a bony chest. In an instant all thoughts of the blond were gone.
”Sorry Hermione, I was about to ask if you needed a hand, but you turned too quick”, Neville said as he helped her off the floor. Actually I was about to wank off at the mere site of your phenomenal ass in those muggle jeans he thought to himself. Oh and that top, hugging all the right places, so much better than what is in my pensive.
“It’s fine Neville”, she replied returning her white tank top strap to it’s original place.
She had hoped with the boys gone this year someone might look at her as a something other than the brains of the Golden Trio. As she’d picked out her jeans this morning she hoped at least one boy would notice how her curves filled them out. She would never tell Ron and Harry but, she longed for someone to take notice of the woman she was becoming. Someone other than Percy, in fact anyone other than him would do.
“Gosh Neville! Way to start the year, brutalizing the Head Girl!” Ginny said, as she walked up giving Hermione a sly smile.
Neville immediately blushed at the thought of her having her own quarters, “Head Gir-“
Well he wasn’t going to be noticing her womanly qualities. While Neville had grown into the tall dark handsome body in front of her, he was still a blushing school boy that much was obvious Hermione thought.
“I am not!” Hermione insisted before Neville could finish while, shooting a reproachful look at Ginny.
“What?” Ginny waived her arm “Everyone knows it’s you, I mean who else could it be?” She replied airily while heading towards the front of the store. “And then Percy really will be after you” she called over her shoulder. He’d coming crawling home this summer and it was obvious Hermione was on his to do list.
“I am sorry Hermione and she’s right I’m sure you’ll get it” Neville assured her smoothly.
Licking her lips nervously she replied “Seriously Neville, I rather not talk about it, I’m nervous enough as it is. But you were right I do need a hand, that book up there, the deep brown leather one, with metallic purple lettering on it, could you get it down?”
“Sure, what’s it called” he asked, flashing the sexiest smile her could, as he handed it to her. And after that you can put those lips to good use on me he mused.
“Malattia Genetica it’s Italian for genetic illnesses” she replied brushing the dust from the ornate cover which bore many details none of which were the name or the author. Her eyes were glued to the book; she hadn’t even seen the way he’d look at her.
“That’s not one of our textbooks this year is it, Gran will kill me if she finds out I forgot something else” Ha, some things never changed she thought. Though, he’d matured so much in there years at school, over coming many fears, that wasn’t one of them. She’d missed the sarcasm in his statement.
“No Neville it’s just a bit of light reading, as the boys call it” she joked. As she grabbed her bag and headed toward the front to make her purchase Neville followed. As she weaved through people she could just make out him saying something.
‘What’s that?” she asked loudly.
Catching up to her he repeated the question.
“Where are Harry and Ron at anyway?” It occurred to Neville he hadn’t asked about them. He had been so stoked about talking to her with out them that he completely overlooked it. Now he just needed to know if she was going to be on her own more than usual this year. Then he could plan on being around her.
Stepping up to the counter next to Ginny she replied “They aren’t coming back to school, figured it would be a waste of time, seamed childish in the grander scheme of things I suppose”. Only a handful of people knew what they were doing, they couldn’t risk Voldemort being tipped off.
Neville nodded. Of course he thought angrily how could the savior of the entire wizarding world be troubled with a little thing like school? Then he smiled, they’d both left her here alone, when she was so use to the company of boys. This wouldn’t be as hard as he thought. His Gran called to him, damn that woman. He’d wanted to take her for lunch or something, but instead, he politely said his goodbyes. And assured Hermione he’d be seeing her soon.
Hermione stepped out into the sunlight as she stuffed her newest purchase in one of her bags. It seemed only logical to have two, one for school and one for research. She doubted that the boys would need her less as the year progressed, and she was nothing if not prepared. As she breathed deeply the fresh air reminded her of the early startle she’d had in the bookshop and she began to wonder if he’d really been there somewhere. Picturing Draco Malfoy crouched down hiding behind a stack of books, or between the shelves watching her gave her stomach a wobbly feeling. Before she could address exactly what that feeling was Ginny linked arms with her and began dragging her down the street.
“Where are we going?” Hermione asked as they traveled closer toward knockturn alley.
“There’s this new shop, called Odds and Ends all the girls say they’ve the best potions and accessories ever!” Ginny exclaimed
Rolling her eyes Hermione allowed herself to be drug down the cobblestone. How on earth could Ginny be so girlie, I mean Harry was gone, who cared about things like that at a time like this.
As soon as the front windows came into view, Hermione shouted “I’m out!”
As Ginny began to whine incessantly about how she just had to go in, Hermione watched the teenage witches through the window.
The shop looked like a hen yard, tons of girls going this way and that, all talking at once, and the smell coming out could only be caused by the mix of a few hundred different potions. No, she was definitely not going in there. Just looking at it was causing her to twitch her hand about unconsciously. A quirk her father said she’d inherited from his mum. For her it was brought on mostly by extreme anxiety of any kind and usually affected her appendages. Her father told her that his mom’s “twitchy eye” was reserved for her “highly irritating only son”, this had always made Hermione laugh. Her thoughts of her parents made her wonder if she’d done the right thing by begging them to go to their summer house in St. Thomas, indefinitely.
At first it had seemed like a good idea, they needed a vacation and she felt it would be safer there. Away from the chaos she knew would eventually break out. But, after the boys had left she’d felt more alone than she realized she would. She knew it was only the selfish side that longed for them. The rational side of her would have put them on the moon if possible. No, she decided it was the right thing, even if she missed them terribly, and turned her attention back to the spunky redhead in front of her.
“…after all this is your last year of school, it’s your last chance really” Ginny finished with a look of accomplishment about her features.
“That stores not going anywhere Gin, I can just as easily visit after I graduate, as now” Hermione retorted.
Honestly it was just a silly shop, no need for the --worlds going to end last chance to do anything-- bit.
Maybe it was genetic? Percy had tried it the night of Harry’s birthday party to get Hermione to give in and give him the one thing he’d wanted all summer. As he’d stumbled toward her listing all the reasons they were so well suited, she asked him if he was crazy. When he’d cornered her and pressed his junk against her, she began sputtering (in her most condescending voice) about how this was a time of eminent war, and all he could thing about was a shag so he could die not a virgin. To say she was freaked out by his noticeable state of arousal was an understatement. It was Percy after all. I mean she’d seen a lot of “junk” (as the boys termed it) in her day. You couldn’t spend countless summers at the Burrow and not. But Percy was just that Percy, a whole different kind of species in her mind.
Percy had quickly sobered at the mention of the war and apologized for his completely offensive suggestion, and the next day gone back to trying to impress her with his brain; which she tolerated numerously better than his physical attempts. When she’d told Harry about that night they’d laughed for ages, but when Ron was informed of “what was so bloody funny” he simple looked at Harry and asked why he wanted to do-- that --with Hermione. She reminded him, with a punch in the arm that she was after all a girl and Harry just began laughing all over again.
This was one of the only reasons she was glad to be rid of them for the school year. Though she loved the boys like brothers, they just didn’t have a clue. She was glad however, Ron had gotten over his _I don’t want her, but I’ll be damned if anybody else can have her_ attitude before they left. It had almost ruined their friendship.
If not for Harry’s persuading him that all he felt, she had no doubt Ron would have convinced himself he loved her; that was not it and she knew it. Apparently so did Harry that’s why’d agreed to talk to Ron about it. Normally he stayed out of their squabbles, but when Neville had told the boys(last year) he wanted to ask Hermione on a Hogsmead weekend, and Ron had flat out told Neville not to embarrass himself, Harry started seeing the signs. He had half expected Ron to make a move, but when he didn’t Harry asked him about it. He looked at him like a two headed gnome, and he knew Ron had no intentions of dating Hermione. Hermione had been angry when Harry told her about Neville, but realized Ron was really just that clueless to his own feelings. Thankfully it had not been too hard for Harry to convince him to take another look at what was going on with him and Hermione.
Now, she might actually have time for a boyfriend if she wasn’t constantly doing their work, or getting into trouble round ever corner. And with the ferret-boy not there to announce to everyone how dirty, filthy or ugly she was every 15 seconds of every day, she might just find “prince harming”, as her mom so cheekily put it.
“A boyfriend Hermione…it’s your last chance at a BOYFRIEND” Ginny enunciated exasperatedly. For being the smartest witch of our time she’s really thick sometimes, she thought.
“Please as if I’ve got time for one with the research, school work, and don’t forget being Head Girl” Hermione reminded sarcastically. As if going into some girly shop is going to help me find a boy is what she was thinking.
“Come on Hermione it will only take a minute..” Ginny pleaded pulling on her friends arm.
Shaking off the grasp like a pro she headed across the street. “Go on I’ll wait over here” she stated pointing at the last bench on the corner.
“Fine I’ll be back” a deflated Ginny answered.
Dropping her bags next to her, Hermione plopped on the bench. Looking across the street at Odds and Ends she knew it was going to be a long minute. She pulled the book out of her school bag and thumbing to her place marker settled into the story. Every now and then she would glance to her right to take in her surroundings, for just across the walk was Knockturn Alley. She was not scared mind you; she just didn’t want to be caught off guard. After about ten minutes of attempting to read and pay attention to those around her, she gave up.
I wonder if that really was Malfoy I smelled earlier she pondered or maybe, Pansy’s found a way to charm things to smell like the great git. That would be so like Pansy, evil bastards gone and she’s still mooning for him and the lay she never got. How weak could a woman be?
If –she-- wanted him no way she would prance around making things smell like him. No she’d figure out a way to talk to the junior Death Eater and ask him what the fuck he was thinking. Not that she wanted –him—she just wanted answers. Honestly, kill Dumbledore, as if anyone their age (with half a brain) would have the balls to even try that. She did have to give him credit; he had tried to be resourceful, even if out of desperation. She just had so many things she wanted to scream at him, about how he could risk everything, why didn’t he just ask for protection the stubborn ass! Why couldn’t he see the light? .
Watching Harry tell everyone about that night on the tower had brought out things she still could not define. But the most important thing she had realized about Malfoy was that he was a kid just like them. Over the years somehow he’d become less of a being in their minds and more of just something that existed to cause them pain. He was still a jerk extraordinaire, among a few other choice words, she had for him, but a kid trapped in the middle no less. Harry had realized it too; she could see it in his eyes whenever he talked about Malfoy. On many occasions Harry would just be sitting completely zoning out, and when she’d ask what he was thinking about he’d reply Malfoy, without some much as blink.
As the summer had progressed, she had waged war in her head for even giving a shit about him. Then she let her self think it was just curiosity and her need to know. To know he would have done it different if giving the chance again. To believe in their innocents as children; because if he did not regret it, that some how changed everything even more and that was not something she could deal with just yet.
Now sitting here thinking about all things she wanted answered from him; she resigned to the fact that she’d never get the chance, no matter how badly she’d wanted it. Not now, he was long gone and she knew Voldemort would find him before Harry or Ron might. For one thing he was actually looking for him, and Harry wasn’t. Although Harry told her if he or the Order happened across him they would find a way to save him. That was Harry; saving everybody. And who knew it was possible Harry would save him, and bring him back. Maybe, she would get the chance to get all the answers. Maybe, she would see Draco Malfoy again.
Sighing she closed her book. She was putting it into her bag when she heard an evil chuckle.
“Pride and Prejudice hmm giving up on learning something you actually do need a lesson in” the voice tatted, “If only Dumbledore could see his little muddblood Head Girl now”
Snapping her head up Hermione could not believe her eyes. Standing mere inches away from her in broad daylight was Lucius Malfoy.
