Zingaro
Hi, and welcome to Zingaro. Chapters for this tale will be shorter than I normally write, for the simple reason that I will be able to update more frequently without having to worry about having a minimum of over 3,000 words to a chapter.
I hope you enjoy Zingaro. The OFC in this one differs greatly from the characters I usually create, seeing as how she has not suffered the usual abused childhood. Severus is somewhat milder to, although he is still prone to his irritable, snappy moments.

Chapter 1
“Oh and while I remember, our new Defence against the Dark Arts teacher should be arriving some time this evening. Unfortunately, some urgent business cropped up that needed attending to, hence he is delayed. His name is Paul Vance and his credentials are excellent. Unfortunately, I have not yet spoken to him personally, since his previous work had him travelling around the globe. His last employer did tell me however that his standard of work far exceeded all and any task he was set. Mr Vance has also stated that he prefers to make his own living arrangements. He will not inhabit the castle out of teaching hours, preferring instead to make alternative arrangements. As yet I do not know what those arrangements are, but he insists that no inside accommodation is necessary , though I am assured that he will be staying somewhere within the actual grounds of Hogwarts. I suppose we shall see when he arrives. That is all, shall we proceed to the Great Hall in readiness for the sorting.”
Dumbledor swept his eyes over the gathered group of witches and wizards that made up his teaching staff for Hogwarts School for witchcraft and wizardry.
His gaze lingered a second longer on Professor Severus Snape, knowing the dark wizard resented the fact he had again been passed over for the job of defence against the dark arts Professor.
In all honesty, Severus could not give a damn about teaching defence, so long as this new professor did not have his head so far up his arse that he was unable to prepare the students properly for what was certain to be a bloody and fatal war.
Voldemorts forces grew stronger every day, his power at a premium. So far, only Lupin and the fake Moody had managed to teach anything of use to the little brats over the last five years and Severus was concerned that the fight was already lost.
He stood and followed the others from the staff room as they made their way to the head table in the Great Hall.
“I have never heard the like.” Professor Flitwick said, starting a series of appalled, similar comments from the rest of the staff.
“What does he intend to do, where will he sleep?” Professor Sprout wanted to know. “I have to work late in the greenhouses some nights, what if he is lurking about, waiting to pounce on me when I am at my most vulnerable?”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “What makes you think anyone would wish to pounce on you Pomona?” He asked the pudgy woman in his most sarcastic voice.
It was only minutes before the steadily rising cacophony of chatter, greetings, and laughter reached their ears, while the second to seventh year students made their way to the house tables.
Only once they were seated, did Severus allow his glare to slowly sweep the hall, starting with the Hufflepuffs, followed by Griffindor, who received a somewhat deeper intensity of glare, then on to Ravenclaw, and finaly his own house, Slytherin. Here his glare lessened somewhat. After all, he was their head of house.
Carrying a small stool, on which was perched a tatty looking hat, Professor McGonagall entered the hall. She was followed by the usual troupe of terrified looking first years and the sorting began. Once the first years were sorted and seated, the Headmaster declared the feast open and the piles of food appeared on the tables, along with the multitude of ghosts popping up and flying about, greeting returned students and doing their best to scare the new ones.
Many of the students noticed the empty chair where the defence Professor would normaly sit, including Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley. Now in their sixth year, the trio were quieter, more observant and much sharper than ever before.
After the feast, the headmaster stood and began making his usual announcements about the Forbidden Forest and the ever-growing list of banned items on Argus Filch’s mile long list.
“As many of you will have noticed, the seat belonging to the dark arts Professor is at currently empty. This is because our new Professor was delayed in his departure earlier today, but I can assure you that Professor Vance will be arriving sometime this evening.”
At the headmasters behest, the prefects stood, ready to escort the first years to their dormitories when all of a sudden the hall went quiet.
In the distance, a deep, constant thudding sound could be heard. Over mere minutes the thudding grew louder and louder, developing into more of a great boom, boom as it neared.
The Professors stood and looked out at the sea of nervous faces before them, many of the first and second years actually bursting into tears with fright. After telling the prefects to watch over the younger students, the Headmaster walked to the front of the hall, ordering that fifth years and below stay in the hall. Sixth years and above were invited to escort the teachers to the main entrance.
Once the door to the hall was locked and securely warded behind them, the teachers and older students made their way to the front entrance, wands at the ready and prepared to battle with the dark forces that had somehow managed to breech the Hogwarts protective wards.
Albus Dumbledor, Minerva McGonagall, and Severus Snape, stood at the head of the group, shielding Potter, Granger and Weasley who were close behind them.
“You okay Harry?” Ron asked his friend.
“About as okay as anyone else I suppose. What about you two?”
Ron and Hermione nodded without much conviction. This was it, the final battle. As they watched, their hearts in their mouths, Filch pulled open the enormous doors.
The booming was louder than ever now as the group stood wide-eyed and waiting.
Until Hermione burst into fits of giggles. She was closely followed by several of the students, Severus turned to give them his best glare, and a scolding when he realised the booming was accompanied by the most awful racket he had ever heard. The racket however was not the sound of Death Eaters ready for battle; it was in fact the horrendous sound of extremely loud muggle music
“What the …” Severus exclaimed as a large black vehicle drove up the long drive to the main entrance.
“Is that a …?”
“No, it can’t be.”
“It is you know.” Hermione finally put in. “It’s a hearse.”
“A hearse? What’s a hearse?” Ron asked.
“It’s a muggle funeral car.” A Ravenclaw seventh year told him.
“You mean someone’s brought a dead body to Hogwarts? Why?” Professor McGonagall asked appalled.
“Please, calm yourselves.” The headmaster told them. “It is not as we feared, a raid. It is I believe …ah yes. I think our new dark arts Professor has just arrived. Though somewhat unconventionally I must admit.”
Most just stood on the porch and stared as the hearse pulled to a stop at the bottom of the steps. The far door of the vehicle opened and the music grew to especially deafening proportions before the engine was cut and the noise came to an abrupt end.
“Thank the gods for that.” Severus said angrily. “I have never in my …”
His words were cut short as Paul Vance stepped out of the hearse and walked round to mount the steps.
