“Easy boy, easy…” Tonks whispered, leaning against the wall of the darkened room. “It’s just me…” her voice was soothing, though the growling coming from the far side of the room did little to calm her nerves. Slowly she sank to her knees, placing both palms up, hands in front of her flat on the floorboards. Scrabbling paws were heard racing forward and she held her breath. Hot, almost sticky air was blown over her fingers as the wolf sniffed ferociously at her hands. “That’s it…” she whispered and breathed a careful sigh of relief. “Just me, Remus, just me…”
As the full moon had approached, Molly had regretted having the pre-wedding party then, but stated they had little time to deal with it otherwise. Tonks had frowned and insisted she simply wasn’t attending, and had put up an even further fuss when Molly had told her it would be best if he stayed locked up in Sirius’ old bedroom and that she had to show her face for a decent amount of time. The two females had a very different opinion of decent amount of time. Tonks had waited until Molly was preoccupied with Fleur’s parents before sneaking off stairs, surprisingly unnoticed.
“I’m sorry, you know I wish I could stay…” she whispered, stroking the wolf gently as he forced his snoot into her lap. “Hey!” she teased, and pulled his head back as his nose nudged into her crotch. “I know we’re friendly and all…but not like this, ok?” she sighed and ran her fingers through his thick, matted fur. Remus whined and scratched his paw against her leg. “Ow, damnit, Remus,” she said and smacked her knuckles against his head. “Someone’s got to trim those claws…” again he whimpered, laying his head still across her thighs.
She knew he could comprehend when something he’d done was wrong, and he hadn’t meant to dig his claws into her leg, slicing a hole into her trousers. “I’m sorry, love,” she whispered and leaned her face down to kiss the top of his head. Molly, like the rest of the Order members, believed he was far too dangerous, despite the Wolfsbane potion, to be around during his transformation, but Tonks never seemed to hear them when they tried explaining that to her. His hot sticky tongue was laving at her hand and she sighed. “I wish I could stay…” and the wolf whimpered. “But if I don’t get back downstairs I’m certain that Molly is going to have my head.”
Remus howled. “I know, I know.” She chuckled. “I’m sorry, but you know how she feels about that.” The wolf again dug his nose toward her crotch, and pawed at her thighs. “Remus!” she leaned back and almost tumbled into the walls. “Alright, just another few minutes, but I have to go.” It was lonely, being locked all alone in the stuffy bedroom of your best friend, who was long since gone, not being able to be near the girl you loved, but Remus had little choice. Molly and the others felt it wasn’t safe to have him running about, even at night, and they were too far off from the shrieking shack to allow him proper access. Again he felt Tonks hand ruffle the top of his head and he whimpered. “I’m sorry, I really do have to go.” Her lips fell gracefully against his left ear. He longed to leap up and slobber his tongue over her, but used every ounce of strength to resist her, simply settling for his snoot on the floor, eyes downcast.
Slipping back out of the dark room, Tonks breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that no one had seen her leaving Remus’ room. It wasn’t until she turned around that she crashed smack into the sturdy chest of Bill Weasley. “What are you doing up here?” he asked, a bit of a twinkle residing in his eye.
“I— um, just…well I needed some— er that is to say…” her face flushed as red as his hair.
“You wouldn’t be paying a visit to our resident werewolf, would you, Tonks?” he seemed to have that all knowing grin about his face, making her flush even more. “Cause if you were you know it would make my mother furious…”
“You won’t say anything, please, Bill?” she said, up on her toes, wide eyes pleading with him.
He was quiet for a moment and then shrugged his shoulders. “Of course not, I’d have to admit to being up here hiding away from the party if I did that.” He sighed, and turned his face away from her. Bill had been most unfortunate to receive a vicious attack from Fenrir Greyback and his face had been horribly scarred beyond repair, but she noticed that in the hall light, you could hardly see it.
“Why are you hiding out up here?” she asked, leaning back against the wall.
Bill sighed and waved his hand over his face, at once several glamour charms fell away. “Because I’m sick and bloody tired of having to show my bloody face downstairs.” He muttered. “The glamour charms wear me out, and everyone keeps staring when I’m not wearing them.”
Tonks sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“I don’t want Fleur’s parents to think she’s marrying a freak.”
“I’d be a freak over clumsy any day of the week,” she smiled.
Bill too cracked a smile at this. “It can’t be all that bad…”
“You’ve no idea,” Bill muttered and slumped against the wall beside her. “It’s not just the party, it’s everything about this marriage.”
“Having second thoughts?”
“Possibly.” He said rather flatly. The truth was, Bill found himself nervous and unsure. It wasn’t a doubt about loving Fleur, he knew the emotional side of it was there. But in a world so uncertain, when it seemed as all there was were Death Eaters and Good People where they were your family or the enemy, and the ministry was divided; Bill thought that perhaps it was not the right time to be focusing on tying down and getting married. But was conflicted on the issue for on the other time, when the world was fast hurdling toward an end, why wouldn’t you get married? “I don’t know.” He said.
“Well you love her, don’t you?”
“Of course, it’s not that…” he trailed off. Fleur had been one of the only women that he’d really ever allowed himself the pleasure of being with. The need to explore and experience others had gone un-sated. And his job security was faltering, as the Goblins became less and less trustworthy of wizards, they kept fewer and fewer of them around. “Stupid party,” he added, looking glumly at his shoes.
“I know the feeling…” she said and then caught herself gazing at his scars, quickly looking away.
“It’s alright, you can look, I don’t mind. I know I won’t catch a basket of ridicule from you, or a bucket of sympathy.”
Tonks smiled a bit. “They really aren’t that bad,” she said and then scrunched up her nose. The flesh on her face seemed to move of its own accord, slinking across her cheeks and around the bones of her jaw, little lines ripping into them, as if the skin was being sucked into an invisible vortex. Her face was soon littered with scars that looked to be almost exact replicas of the ones on Bill’s face.
“That’s pretty impressive,” he said, eyeing her for a moment.
“Oh yeah? Watch this,” she smiled and with another scrunch of her now distorted nose, her hair began to shrink back and flourish into a bright red ponytail. “I think all I’m missing is the earring.”
Bill couldn’t help but staring intently at her face. She was more than a look-a-like, she could have been him. It was like gazing into a mirror, only the mirror had developed a mind of its own, which actually wasn’t all that uncommon in the wizarding world. He laughed. “So that’s what I’d look like if I had breasts.”
Tonks laughed, but her face still blushed. “Yeah, but I can make those disappear as well.” And she scrunched her nose but Bill put his hand on her shoulder. “What? I could…”
“It’s alright, you don’t have to.” He chuckled again. “I suppose we both better get back down to the party, before mum realizes that we’re missing and assumes I’ve bailed on the wedding and that you’ve gone off to free Remus.”
“I don’t care what she thinks about me, she’s not my mum.” Tonks winked and hopped up, if a bit clumsily, to her feet.
“Tonks, I see that mischievous glint in your eye…and it’s all too scarily akin to Fred and George at the moment, with you looking like me. Let me tell you that look means they’re up to no good…”
“I solemnly swear I am up to no good,” she grinned. It was the lopsided goofy grin of a Weasley and Bill couldn’t help but crack a smirk. “Come on, you know you want to go somewhere else and not have to deal with the party crowd.”
“Tonks, I couldn’t—”
“Of course you could, I’ll just have to be really careful not to fall.” They both gave out a bout of laughter. She ran her hands through her red hair. “I think I can do this…” and with another scrunch of her nose, making the witch appear to be concentrating hard on relieving herself of a constipated state, her breasts shrank away, a more manly chest appearing in their place, and an Adam’s Apple became prominent in her throat. “There,” she said, sounding much gruffer, almost like Bill.
“Holy hell, Tonks, that’s good.”
She winked. “Off you go then, to do whatever it is that you do that I don’t…” she said and then turned to face the stairs. She wasn’t sure exactly what had prompted her to shape shift into Bill Weasley, but she could tell he seemed miserable. And perhaps playing as her favorite Weasley brother would make her a little less miserable as well. With that thought in mind, she headed off down the stairs, firmly gripping the railing, and not falling, not even once.
