  • A cold calloused hand clasped over her mouth as she tried to scream, but all efforts were muffled as the hands clamped tight over her mouth, only allowed Hermione to breath through her nose. She yanked and pulled at the arms holding her, but to no avail. She bit the hand of her intruder and a deep silken voice breathed in her ear.

“Listen to me,” he hissed, holding her wrists in one hand and pulling her head back by her hair with the other. “Don’t try anything smart, and you might survive. Shut your mouth, and come with me.”

An electric shock went through her spine at the sound of the voice speaking in her voice. It was all too familiar and a voice she had heard very often throughout the last six years of her life.

“Profess—” she tried to say, but only yelped when he pulled at her hair.

“Don’t say a word,” he snarled.

She could not turn to look at the man to see if the man really was her Potions Professor, for he thrust her forward and walked behind her, holding her hair. They walked to the front of a dark, forbidden forest before he pushed her ahead of him, making her fall into a pile of twigs and leaves.

Her eyes narrowed to look at the man, whose face was covered with a hood, cascading down his body onto the ground. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her up, and she knew no more.

The floor beneath her bare back was cold. Deathly cold. She tossed to her side, but clutched at her rib cage, feeling extremely weak. Her eyes fluttered open to see a row of dark, masked men standing before her. This could only mean one thing. The followers of the darkest wizard of all time. And she, of course, had been captured. She should have known better walking alone by herself, but the night air had seemed so thrilling, so inviting. Her courage and lioness got the better of her and took her Gryffindor heart straight into the depths of the forest until this. A man, who she knew might have been Severus Snape, captured her.

“Wand,” she croaked, trying to grab at anything near her, but the floor around her was flat and icy. “Where’s my wand?”

“No need to worry, girl,” a malicious voice cooed and her head snapped to her left to meet the red, slanted eyes of the Dark Lord. “So Potter does indeed still have his faithful followers… Do not look away from me!”

Hermione’s eyes felt as if they could not stay in once place, but she snapped them in place to meet the eyes of her worst enemy.

“Severus,” Voldemort called, and the familiar, dark, and bat-like figure of her professor appeared next to him, his traveling cloak still hanging across his shoulders. She knew then, that it had indeed been Snape who had brought her here to be tortured.

“Yes, my lord?” He said, not a hint of emotion, gratitude, regret, or sorrow crossing his face.

“You have been very helpful to me these past few weeks. Such as ridding of the men standing in my way, giving me crucial information day in and out, and capturing one of Potter’s filthy mudblood friends.”

Snape simply gave a curt nod, bowing slightly before speaking again. “It is my honor, my lord, to serve you. I only hope to give you what is truly needed.”

The way he spoke to him made Hermione sick. The way they always acted as if he was the greatest thing to walk upon the earth. As if he was the creator of all things magical. And Hermione certainly knew that he was not. He may have been one of the darkest and most powerful wizards of there time, but he was not a God.

“You sicken me,” she spat, and from the moment words came flying from her lips, she knew they were the wrong ones.

“Crucio!” Voldemort hissed, pointing his wand at her face.

Excruciating pain met her body in waves, making her scream in agony and writhe on the floor. It was now that she noticed her body was bare, exposed to all of the people watching her. The pain came not only once, but twice before she began to twitch and come to a stop. She would not beg for mercy, but only take what there was to come. Hermione Granger was not weak.

“Be silent, you filthy girl! Do you see what happens to those who do not obey me?” Voldemort roared, one of his arms flying above his head, the other still pointing his wand at Hermione. He then turned to Snape, agitation still etched across his face. “Severus.”

“Yes, my lord?” Snape asked slowly, his eyes not daring to gaze at the bare girl, panting heavily on the floor.

“You will return to Hogwarts as my spy, and you will take the mudblood with you. Make sure you nurse her back to health. Keep your eye on her until she is well again.” His eyes glanced over to the row of Death Eaters who were standing on the other side of Hermione.

“You!” Voldemort yelled, pointing his wand at one of the Death Eaters. “Take her into the other room, before she is to return to Hogwarts.”

“Is there anything else, my lord?” Snape asked his face pale and pallid.

Voldemort turned to face Snape again, stepping closer and lowering his voice just above a whisper. “Make sure you take all the information that she knows. Return with information sufficient enough, and you shall be rewarded.”

“I will do just that,” Snape said quietly, giving another curt nod before stepping into the room to retrieve the girl. She was being held by Macnair, her arms being held behind her back as she jerked and tugged to attempt to become free.

When Hermione saw that he had entered the room of which she lay, being held captive by a masked Death Eater, she snarled. “Get away from me you… you!”

“You… what?” he stepped closer to her, smirking mischievously, “Either you come with me back to Hogwarts, or you stay here, with the Dark Lord.”

Hermione said nothing, but looked at him, a look of hatred occupying her entire being, the way she looked, the way she stood, and even the way she breathed showed how angry she truly was. She jerked herself free from the arms of the Death Eater and took a step towards Snape.

“I see you managed to get your clothes back on,” Snape drawled sleekly, grabbing her forearm.

“Glad to see you noticed,” Hermione snapped back, not entirely comfortable with him taking hold of her in such a manner.

Snape apparated the two of them to the grounds just outside of Hogwarts, into the chilly, winter air. Snapes heavy breathing showed in the air around him as he clutched onto a barely conscious Hermione. She shifted in his arms, and he carried her like dead weight.

“Where… am I?” Hermione said softly, looking up slowly to see whose warm arms were wrapped so tightly around her. Her eyes narrowed to see the concentrated face of Severus Snape who was leading her to the entrance of Hogwarts. “Professor?”

Snape’s head snapped down to look at her and sneer played across the lines of his worn face. “Miss Granger, you should consider yourself very lucky that you are even breathing right now.”

    “Sir—”

“Save it for later, Miss Granger, we must head to the Headmasters office.”

Hermione wasn’t sure if she heard him reply or not, for the weakness she had been feeling for the past few hours since she had been splayed upon the floor was creeping up on her once more. Her body tensed for a moment, then released, putting her into a quiet slumber.

Severus Snape carried Hermione up to the Gargoyle of Professor Dumbledore’s office. He propped her up in his arms as they spiraled up to the top, and he carried her into the room, grunting slightly as he propped her in the chair across from Dumbledore’s desk. It was the chair that he had sat in many times, talking with the old man about many things. After placing her there, he took a seat next to her quietly, folding his arms as he sat. As he waited for Professor Dumbledore to arrive, he never noticed how incredibly remarkable the office truly was. Much lighter and cheery than his own office in the dungeons of course, filled with many portraits of previous headmasters of Hogwarts, and the Sorting Hat placed neatly on it’s shelf. The people in the portraits moved back and forth, chattering quietly, as if living their own normal life within the picture. It was incredible really; Severus always admired the work of art even if they were quite annoying to bear while grading paperwork. The lighting was dim, relaxing almost, and his black eyes gazed over at the girl who was snoozing quietly in the chair beside him. The curls of her hair were messy, bunched around her shoulders as her mouth hung open slightly, letting out her shallow breathing. Snape’s thoughts were abruptly interrupted as Dumbledore made his way down to his desk.

He merely smiled, his eyes twinkling as always. That bloody twinkle. Always twinkling in the worst of times, of course. His old hands grazed over the top of his chair before he looked to Hermione and folded his hands. “What is it he’s done to her, Severus?”

Snape pursed his lips, letting his thoughts wonder a bit more before replying. “Infractus Corpus I am afraid, Headmaster.”

Dumbledore said nothing, but moved closer to the girl, letting one of his hands fall to lie upon her shoulder. His blue eyes glanced up to look at Severus again before speaking. “I trust you know the remedy to this curse, Severus?”

He thought for a second before placing a finger to his lips. “I do, but the antidote will have to be given to Miss Granger once a week and selected oils will have to be placed in her lavatory.”

“Very well. Do you still have the open chamber next to your rooms?”

Snape’s jaw slacked before he realized he must’ve looked like a fool. “You cannot be implying that she stay there, Albus?”

Taking a step towards Snape, Dumbledore only smiled. “I’m afraid so. I believe it is the best that we can do to trust that you will keep her safe when in such vulnerable times. After all, Miss Granger will need to be taught a bit of Occulmency.”

“Occulmency? Occulmency?” Snape spat, his mind automatically thinking back to when he had the wretched honor of having to teach Harry Potter how to become a successful Occulmens. “After Potter I certainly will not—”

“But this is Hermione Granger, Severus, not Harry Potter,” Dumbledore said slowly, his smile only becoming more increasingly annoying.

Suddenly Snape stood, letting his anger and agitation get the best of him. His black hair flung in front of his eyes as his eyes flashed dangerously. “I am trying my best not to get slaughtered in this war, Dumbledore. I’m willing to give my life up to win, but I am certainly not willing to have a young woman sleeping in my chambers and constantly whining to have me take care of her every need!”

Dumbledore went around the chair where Hermione still sat as she shifted in her dreamy sleep. He stopped in front of the dark man, but remained calm while Snape continued to have his fit and breathe heavily, his chest rising and falling rapidly. “I believe Hogwarts is no longer safe, Severus. In Gryffindor Tower or even the Hospital Wing, we are sacrificing something dangerous. The Dark Lord will want to penetrate her mind in such places.”

“Those places are exceedingly more appropriate than sleeping in my rooms, Dumbledore,” Snape huffed, flinging his hand up to his face to get his hair out of his eyes.

“You are a very gifted man, Severus. Do not doubt yourself now,” Dumbledore said quietly. “When you return to Voldemort to give him information that she has supposedly given to you, if he wishes to see Miss Granger, she will have practiced and accomplished the skill of blocking her mind with your help. She is a very hard-working intelligent girl, Severus. I trust you know that by now.”

“Insufferable know-it-all,” Snape muttered, folding his arm stubbornly and greatly resembling a five year old boy who didn’t get his way. He hung his head for a moment, staring at the floor before meeting the eye of a patient old man. He sighed, “Oh I suppose.”

“It will all be well in the end Severus, you know that. Good night,” Dumbledore smiled and turned on one foot, making his way back up a simple spiraling staircase into his rooms.

Snape took one look at Hermione who was still snoozing in the chair, her arm hanging limply over the side. He swiftly picked her up and made his way out of the office. Making his way down to the dungeons at such a time in the night made him feel very fortunate. Being seen holding Hermione Granger in his arms down to the dungeons would have been the gossip talk for weeks had it been during the day. Snape scoffed lightly and almost stopped in his tracks when Hermione shifted in his arms.

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, revealing a pair of dark brown eyes that held dark circles beneath them from being so worn from the curse. She only stared at him for a moment before realizing who he was. “Snape?”

“That’s sir or Professor to you, Miss Granger,” Snape said in a disgruntled voice as he shifted her weight in his arms, making his way into his rooms. He shoved the door open roughly with a loud slam. “By the headmaster’s orders, you will be staying in my spare chambers for the time being. And no, it was not by my choice, so if there is any whining at all, you shall face detention once you have been properly healed.”

Hermione did nothing but sighed and decided not to push the issue. Now she felt very weak, her arms and legs hung tiredly as she propped her head against the side of his chest, surprised at how warm he felt. She opened her eyes a bit to look at him. He seemed not to care for now, figuring she was vulnerable and not in her right mind for lying on his chest like that. But she was tired, and it was the most comfortable option.

She knew by the warm and inviting feeling on her back that he had placed her on a four poster bed. Her eyes flew open to find that the room was very dark. The only light was a small lamp on the other side of the room. Hermione watched intently as Snape searched for a blanket, his black curtain like hair hanging over his eyes. He returned to the foot of the bed and threw the blanket over her. He seemed to feel her stare, for his eyes hovered over to look into her own.

He simply stared back before speaking rather dully in a monotone, “We will need to speak tomorrow morning. Until then, good night Miss Granger.”

“Good night, Professor,” she said softly, giving up all the energy she could muster, and then fell into a deep sleep as soon as she heard the door shut.
