Author's Notes: I hope this meets with your approval. I can't write crack, and I'm still working on the angst angle, so I'm afraid this is light on the angst, but it does have substance and vamp!smut so hopefully that will make up for what it's missing. I tweaked canon a bit to fit this fic, but I'm sure you'll see why. 5,597 words.

Severus sighed. Of all the times to discover the identity of his mate it would be now when he was lacking sufficient time to properly court him. He frowned. That wasn't quite right. Hadn't he always felt a pull towards Remus, even before he knew what he was, what either of them were? He thought back to his school days and felt his skin flush with heat at the memories. All the times he'd tossed off thinking of the other boy pinned beneath him. All the times he'd secretly followed Remus and Sirius around and the tight feeling in his chest whenever he saw Sirius touch Remus.

Even later, when Remus came to teach at the school; the obsessive way he'd watched Remus, going so far as to place a locater spell in the other man's Wolfsbane so he could track the wolf. Granted, that did have the effect of warning him the night the wolf had attacked the Golden Trio, but it hadn't really been necessary. Yes, the attraction had always been there.

It was only now – two years after the end of the war – that Severus felt comfortable enough to visit his clan and learn more about the vampire heritage he'd discovered at thirteen. He smirked. It was odd to think his family had the same sort of ranking as the Malfoys; particularly after all he'd been through without having an opportunity to let his clan know. They had been very upset to hear of his mother's death, and even more disturbed to find out he hadn't known he wasn't human until after his father's death at Voldemort's hands.

In turn, he had been pleased to discover that while he had been born of a human and a vampire, he was in fact full vampire. As his father had been a wizard, he had none of the weaknesses inherent in being born to a human with no power.

Now he had to deal with the pull towards his mate. How very ironic magic was! His Principal – the woman who led his clan – had made the comment that love was no respecter of person, gender, species or number, and neither was magic. She'd advised him to deal with it, formulate a plan to win his mate and to do it soon. Given the harshness of his life thus far, he was quickly nearing the stage where if he did not claim his mate, he would be lost to the darkness, and his vampiric nature would change from a reasoning creature and render him little more than a feral beast that would need to be put down. Having already lost his mother from their number, his Principal had no wish to lose him as well.

He had been concerned – naturally – about the fact Remus was a werewolf, but his Principal had laughed, saying it would make little difference. Remus would gain immortality through ingesting Severus' blood yes, but he would retain what humanity he had. In addition he would gain an augmentation of his natural strength and speed, as well as greater mental clarity during his times as the wolf. Severus would gain Remus' keen senses, which would only augment his already acute senses of sight and sound and vastly increase his sense of smell. The greatest benefit to Severus would be the salvation of his sanity.

In actuality, the rumor that had concerned him had been spread by the werewolf and vampire elders when their numbers were small – along with false rumors about how to kill werewolves and vampires – as a means of protection from feral wolves and mad younglings, as well as from ignorant humans. Neither were the two species really at war. The full truth was told to vampire and werewolf alike when they reached the age of maturity, and not before.

Severus had asked why he was being told all this now when he was half a century away from maturity, and was informed that he was being told simply because he would need the entirety of his knowledge for his mating. He was also told that vampires age mentality at twice the rate of humans, even while physically, they aged in much the same way as the humans they fed from, at least until they claimed a mate. Severus could survive on human blood, but the most nutritious and beneficial would be the blood of his chosen partner.

He'd learned in his talks with his Advocate – a vampire by the name of Augustus – that it would be best to inform people of his true nature as quickly as possible. Now that he'd been accepted and named a member of the clan, his appearance would change to those more characteristic of the family he was born into. The changes would become even more apparent once he'd claimed his mate. While many vampire clans thrived by the turning of humans, his particular clan had a tendency to mate with other magical species which made up a large part of each vampire's presence. For example, succubae and incubi were created by the mating of a vampire and a nymph or satyr; no one could deny the sheer appeal and presence of such creatures.

It had been a lot of information and had taken a great deal of getting used to.

Severus sighed as he took the next step in the creation of Remus' Wolfsbane. He had a feeling that convincing Remus to be his mate would be one of the larger challenges he had faced to date. While there was an almost peaceful civility between them now, they were mere acquaintances. Convincing Remus of his feelings and his sincere desire – and need – to mate with him was another matter entirely.

He had indeed developed a strategy for claiming his mate and he would allow nothing to stand in his way. Whether Remus realized it or not – and Severus suspected he did – the man thought more like a wolf at times than a man. Therefore, Severus' first step would be to appeal to the beast before he appealed to the man.

    ~*~*~

Remus settled into his chair, doing his best to ignore the pull of the moon. It seemed that as he got older, the Wolfsbane worked less and less and he had to fight harder to restrain his wolf, to retain his human mind. He found himself more and more missing the days when he could run free during the full moon with his friends at his side. He sighed and did his best to shelve those thoughts away. It was reaching the point where even Severus' presence was a welcome distraction from the loneliness that only seemed to grow now that Harry had a family of his own.

Not that he was at all unhappy for Harry. Family was important, always had been. Remus knew that no matter how important he was to Harry, when it came right down to it, he wasn't as important to Harry's daily life as Neville and the two orphans they had adopted. He gave a wry smile as the thought occurred to him that Harry wasn't even part wolf and he already had his own little pack. He did like knowing he'd lived to see Harry bonded, and thought Lily and James would have been pleased with his choice.

Remus sighed. He was getting maudlin in his old age he thought as he shook his head to clear it. Where the hell was Severus anyway? He had an hour before sunset and he needed to be able to lock himself away before the transformation. He was about ready to go look for Severus when the knock finally came at the door.

Resisting the urge to rail at the other man as he opened it, he simply said "Severus", and stepped back to allow the potions master inside.

"Remus," Severus greeted, eyes taking clear not of every nuance of Remus' features. "I made it a bit stronger," he said as Remus closed the door and he held out the cup of steaming potion. "What precisely is it that is causing the Wolfsbane to lose its potency?" Severus asked, his eyes intent on Remus' face. He had a feeling Remus knew precisely what was causing it and either didn't wish to face up to it, or simply refused to admit it.

When Remus simply shook his head instead of responding as he took the cup, Severus titled his head incrementally and regarded Remus through narrowed eyes. "Where were you planning to spend this night? The Shack or Grimmauld?"

"Does it matter?" Remus asked as he handed back the cup. "I've no plan to be a danger to anyone else, Severus," he added as he thought of the time he'd endangered Harry and his friends.

"I intend to observe the effects of the modifications I've made to the potion." He would have said more, but Remus was vehemently shaking his head no. "You have no choice in this Lupin. I am not offering, I am informing you of my decision."

"Severus, you can't," was all Remus could think to say. He was having a difficult time keeping the wolf in control as it was; he didn't want Severus there.

Severus' lips curled in an enigmatic smile for mere moments before they firmed once more. "I am more than capable to defending myself if necessary, but I do not believe it will be. In any case, I don't recall granting you a choice."

"Severus," Remus tried again, only to be interrupted.

"Unless you plan to brew the potion yourself tomorrow, you will tell me where we will be this evening."

Sighing, Remus said, "I had planned to go to the Shack."

Raising a brow, all Severus said was, "Shall we?"

    ~*~*~

The wolf that was Remus watched the familiar human with wariness. He didn't smell right. There was something off, something other to his scent that it took the wolf a while to place. The man didn't smell of fear, more of something like anticipation. It backed up as something strange began to happen, something it had seen before but never with this human.

It kept watching as the human changed shape, becoming a wolf itself. Not a werewolf, but a regular grey wolf, and lowered itself carefully to the ground and bared its neck in submission. Cautiously, the werewolf made its way over to the other wolf and stuck its nose in the other's ruff, giving a tiny nip to the neck before it backed off.

The grey wolf sat up on its haunches and waited while the werewolf watched. Finally, seeming to accept the grey wolf's presence, the werewolf turned and loped towards the exit. It looked back over its shoulder as if to ask, 'Are you coming?' then began moving again once the other padded up to him.

Tonight, it knew it was safe to run. It had a companion like it once had before. It would not be alone.

    ~*~*~

Remus awoke feeling warmer than he had after a transformation in years. It took his foggy mind sometime to realize that the warmth he felt was that of another body. He stiffened in surprise before the scent of asphodel and smoke reached his mind and he recognized Severus. They were curled around each other, arms and legs tangled. It felt surprisingly good. Opening his eyes carefully he saw the other man had his eyes closed and was breathing deeply. Still asleep then, he thought as he closed his eyes and relaxed in the arms that held him.

"Awake I see," Severus said quietly into his ear before all that glorious warmth was suddenly gone.

Remus looked up to see Severus holding his clothing out towards him. He flushed; he'd forgotten how bare he was to the other man's gaze while he'd been curled in comforting warmth.

    "Severus," he began.

"Not now, Remus. We'll discuss what happened here another time." That said, Severus turned on his heel and left Remus to dress and return to the castle on his own. He had much to do and he would begin first with Minerva. He had yet to tell anyone of his changed status, and it was past time he did so.

    ~*~*~

Remus took his time returning to the castle. He had no early morning classes – something he'd been sure to request of Minerva specifically because of the three nights he spent as a wolf.

There was something different about Severus lately. Something Remus couldn't quite put his finger on. Oh, he was still the same arrogant man he'd always been, but… there was something else, something softer that lessened the harshness of his words. Even his speech had softened, although not by much.

There was something else as well. Unless Remus' mind was more far gone than he thought, Severus' skin seemed smoother, healthier. His scent had changed a bit a well; the smoky part of it seemed a bit more metallic.

Remus was also slightly confused about what exactly had happened the night before. The wolf was certain it had played with another, and Remus had clearly woken wrapped around Severus, much as he would wake wrapped up in a pile of limbs when James and Sirius ran with him at night. More than anything else was the category of 'mine' of 'pack' that his brain and heart seemed to be placing Severus in. How exactly would Severus react to that, and did Remus truly want to tell him?

The wolf in him growled low at the thought that Remus would deny him pack, deny him what he needed and continue existing in loneliness. Wolves were not meant to be alone, they were meant to be part of a pack or at the very least have a mate. Werewolves were no different in that respect. And Remus had to admit there had always been something about Severus that fascinated him, that drew him, that wouldn't allow him to cease his attempts to befriend the other man. It was partly that need that had caused the Incident in their school years… Sirius had not been pleased at the idea of losing their favorite sport, nor had he been pleased with knowing that the reason Remus had refused to partake in many of their pranks was that he'd liked Severus as a person, found him interesting.

Remus shook his head. That was all in the past – except for certain feelings – and this was the present. This was the morning he'd woken feeling loved, and protected, in Severus' arms no less. But what to do about it?

    ~*~*~

The potions master kept Remus company the next two nights as well, each morning putting off their discussion until a later time. The fourth morning found Remus in better physical and mental condition than he had been in for some time, a state of affairs that pleased his wolf to no end, but confused the man.

When Remus asked Severus about it, Severus had simply pointed out that the wolf needed contact. It needed companionship; he had simply provided it. He had left the staff room before Remus could ask another question.

Minerva walked in next and stopped by his chair. "Remus? Is there something wrong?"

Remus looked up at her and gave her a small smile before shaking his head. "No, Minerva. I'm fine."

She gave him a look that plainly said she didn't believe him. "I just saw Severus leave. Are you quite certain there is nothing wrong?" Severus had been to see her, told her of his true nature, and explained his desire to court and win Remus. She could only imagine Remus was overwhelmed.

Remus sighed. "Minerva, have you ever wanted something even when you weren't certain why you wanted it? Not just for a short while, but for a long while, and in spite of opposition?"

The Headmistress took a seat next to Remus and smiled. "I have, only what I wanted was a person, not a thing. No one quite understood either, but then, no one could live my life for me. What is it, Remus?" she asked, now more certain than ever this had to do with one not-quite-so-surly potions master.

"There's something different about Severus," Remus admitted candidly. Aside from Albus, Minerva had always been one of the few people he could be completely open with, more open even than he had ever been with his friends. He gave her a wry grin. "There's always been something about him actually, but now…" He couldn't quite find the words to tell her that his wolf wanted him, and that he wanted him as well.

She smiled and patted his hand. "Let your heart guide you Remus. Listen to it. It will not steer you wrong." That said, she stood up and continued on her way.

    ~*~*~

Remus took Minerva's advice to heart. For the next two weeks, he trusted his instincts. He listened to everything Severus had to say, and most importantly, to the things he didn't say, but were implied by his actions. And slowly, he figured out what was going on.

    He was being courted.

And he found he didn't mind one bit. In fact, he rather enjoyed it.

It was a week before the next full moon that he found out why Severus has been so persistent in his attention.

    ~*~*~

Remus looked up at the unexpected knock on his door. He opened it to find Severus – slightly pale and what the wolf in him insisted was nervous – standing on the other side. He stepped back to let Severus in, closing and warding the door behind him. Something told him this was to be one of those conversations they wouldn't want overheard, or interrupted.

He was right. Severus didn't bother with the niceties; he got straight to the point.

"There is something you should know before this goes any further," he said, refusing the seat Remus offered him with a shake of his head. "Your wolf has likely already alerted you to the fact that I am not merely human," he added, pausing for a moment.

Remus nodded. He had figured that out on his own, he'd simply decided to wait for Severus to tell him what he was instead of hunting for the information.

"I'm a vampire," Severus said baldly. "And you are my mate. I would prefer to claim you as such before the full moon arrives."

Remus blinked. He hadn't expected that, although given the gleeful response of the wolf and the fact he knew he was being courted for some reason, he probably should have.

"I seem to have developed certain… feelings… for you as well as the need to…" Severus paused, clearly discomfited. While he did have emotions – in great depth – he was unused to actually verbalizing them. It was proving to be more difficult that he'd expected.

Remus smiled. The sight of a visibly flustered Severus Snape was endearing. "Only now developed or have they been there for some time?" he asked.

"I fail to see why the length of time I've had them matters," Severus responded, not willing to divulge just how long he'd wanted Remus, cared for him even.

Remus had expected something of the sort, and he smiled. He'd spent a lot of time watching Severus these last weeks, and he'd learned a great deal when he coupled it with what he knew of Severus as a young man. When something meant a great deal to Severus, he acted as though it mattered little. Which meant that these feelings of the potions master's were fairly deep and that he had felt this way for quite some time.

"Are you quite certain, Severus?" he asked. From what I understand, a vampire bonding is no light undertaking. It cannot be undone." Not to mention that for the first two years, they couldn't be separated for long periods of time. No longer than a week at most.

Severus gave him a look before he snorted indignantly. "You know me well enough to know I would never speak of this if I were not certain."

Remus smiled and stood, moving to stand directly in front of his mate to be. "Alright," he said, lips curling. "But I insist on being taken for dinner first. A proper meal Severus, not a vampiric one."

Severus hadn't expected it to go quite this well, but when had Remus ever done what he'd expected? "Very well. Tomorrow evening then?"

"Tomorrow will be fine," Remus agreed.

Severus gave a brief nod and turned to leave, dismantling Remus' wards with a few well chosen words. Remus' smile widened as the door closed behind Severus, and his wolf howled in joy. It had claimed Severus as it's mate the third morning of the full moon, and was pleased that Severus had made his own claim.

Remus himself was very pleased. He respected Severus, had long been fascinated with him and he was more than a little attracted to him. It was enough for a beginning and they would have eternity to learn to love each other properly. He could hardly wait to see what how the next night would end.

    ~*~*~

Severus had debated several different options for this evening. He'd discarded the first two as far too maudlin. The next idea that had occurred to him seemed simply too juvenile for men well into their forties. Minerva's suggestion – though he would cut his tongue out rather than admit he had solicited her advice – was pubescent at best and would fail to convey how highly he held Remus in his esteem. Finally, he'd decided to go with an idea from a memory of an overheard conversation.

He'd owled Remus as told him to dress comfortably in Muggle clothing, but in something that would be appropriate for a more upscale atmosphere. He could only hope he'd made the right decision as he knocked on Remus' door.

Remus opened the door with a small smile. He was looking forward to this more than he'd anticipated. He'd dressed carefully in a cream silk button down, forest green trousers and had the matching jacket hanging off the back of his chair. He waved Severus in and went to put it on before turning to face Severus once more.

Severus was almost at a loss for words. He'd rarely seen Remus in anything but brown, and frankly, color suited him. Severus – of course – was in his normal black, the only deviation being the suit was expensive and well tailored, and the shirt was gunmetal grey.

"It is good to see you actually own something aside from brown," Severus said with a small smirk.

Remus looked up and studied his face before a small smile formed. "I would say the same, but grey really isn't very far off from black is it? It suits you however," he added.

Severus relaxed. He had been tempted to wear something with more color, but he was pleased with his choice, particularly since Remus seemed to like it. He had decided to enjoy himself tonight, to be as much the person he was in private while he was with Remus as possible. He gave Remus an appreciative glance, smirked when the man flushed lightly and said, "Shall we?"

Remus nodded and Severus opened the door for him. As he closed it behind them, Remus turned and asked, "So where are we going?"

Severus raised a brow. "You'll see soon enough."

He was enjoying this, Remus realized. He was enjoying keeping Remus in the dark about what they were to do. He smiled slightly. Severus Snape planning a surprise; who would have thought?

Severus took Remus' arm and Apparated them to their destination. When they walked out of the alley and down the street, Remus was pleasantly surprised to see their destination was an upscale jazz and dinner club. He smiled as Severus opened the door and the soft notes of a blues song spilled out into the air.

Severus smirked. It would seem he'd chosen correctly after all. He led Remus toward the host desk, gave his name and watched Remus follow the host as they were seated. The werewolf was quite fetching in the suit he wore, and the graceful way he moved belied the fact that in a matter of mere days he would be moving slowly in preparation for his transformation. Severus hoped to have claimed him before then; that would make everything about Remus' transformation smoother.

Once they were seated and the host had gone to fetch their server, Remus turned to Severus and asked, "How did you know I liked jazz?"

"Why do you assume I did?" Severus shot back.

Remus went to answer but caught a glimpse of the sparkle in Severus' eyes and stopped. Instead, he smiled and turned his eyes to the menu. Severus really was quite attractive when he dropped his masks. He wondered if this was how it would be between them; Severus relaxed enough to tease – to flirt – and him content to bask in the attention. Somehow, that didn't seem like too bad a fate.

The evening progressed well in Remus' opinion. The meal was good – excellent in fact – the wine was plentiful, the music was sublime. He started in surprise when Severus asked him to dance, but acquiesced with pleasure. Severus was a skilled dancer, something he hadn't known but felt he should have. When they returned to Hogwarts, he found he was reluctant for the evening to end.

Severus walked Remus to his room, debating the wisdom of requesting a kiss goodnight. His need for his mate had only grown in the last weeks – had grown exponentially in fact. He could feel the desire to taste, to take, coiling through his body as they approached the door and decided perhaps not. Not unless Remus was ready and willing to be claimed this night.

He stopped several feet away from Remus and watched him open the door. Remus turned, brow arching and said, "Not coming in for tea?"

Fighting his need, Severus replied, "Tea is the least of my desires at the moment."

Remus felt a tingle at that, the wolf in him growling softly. "Come inside Severus," he replied, voice holding a hint of the growl. "I enjoyed myself this evening, and I'm not ready for it to end quite yet."

Something inside Severus insisted he give his mate another chance at safety, at backing out now, because Severus knew if he went in that room, he would claim Remus tonight. "Are you quite certain you wish to do this, Lupin?" he asked, voice deceptively calm.

Remus smiled as he pushed open his door, something predatory flashing in his eyes, the wolf in him calling to its mate. He stepped inside, leaving his door open and shrugged out of his jacket.

"Quite," he said as his hands went to undo the buttons of his shirt. "Do ward the door behind you," he added, backing slowly away from the door, fingers never stopping their movement.

Severus' eyes blazed red before he moved through the door almost too swiftly for Remus' eyes to follow. The words for the wards were already leaving his lips and by the time he was done, he had Remus pinned to the nearest wall.

"I warned you," he all but growled. "I gave you a chance," he hissed as he leaned forward and claimed Remus' lips in a bruising kiss.

It was delicious. It was sublime.

Severus could taste Remus; the scent of him, the sound of him, the feel of him all hit his heightened senses like a tornado uprooting trees. Chocolate and wine, arousal and need; they filled Severus' body like a sponge absorbing water. He left Remus mouth to trail hot kisses down his neck, his lips closing over the rapidly beating pulse and sucking. His fangs elongated and he scraped them lightly over Remus' skin.

Remus shivered under the assault, just managing not to loose a howl. He pushed against Severus until he managed to roll them so Severus was pressed against the wall and yanked the vampire's head up so he could claim his mouth. He felt his tongue scratch against a sharp tooth, felt the blood flow, heard Severus' groan and his cock went from half hard to complete fullness in seconds.

"Mine," he growled at his moved his head to nip at Severus' skin, tongue sliding out to taste.

Severus growled and rolled them once more, his hands sliding down to cup Remus' arse. He traced a slim finger along the crease of Remus' arse and whispered, "Mine." His voice was a sibilant, possessive purr as he breathed the word and shifted to rip Remus' shirt from his body. He bent his head and took a tight nipple into his mouth, sucking hard before he grazed it with his teeth, enjoying the shudder that rippled through Remus' body. He shifted his mouth and sank his fangs into the skin just above Remus' heart, drawing blood, licking it away before he claimed Remus' lips once more.

Remus groaned into the kiss, the metallic tang of his blood turning him on more and he wrenched his lips away to sink his teeth into Severus' shoulder. Sweet, Severus' blood was so sweet; rich and thick and filling. He ground his cock against Severus' hips, delighting in the ragged sound the vampire made as he did so. His fingers pulled at cloth until he found skin, fingers caressing, nails scratching, teeth biting. Merlin but Severus felt incredible writhing in his arms, and he pulled himself away long enough to drop to his knees.

Severus stilled, licking his lips to remove the last of Remus' blood from them, eyes blazing red as he watched Remus undo the flies to his trousers and pull his cock free. "Yes," he purred as wet heat surrounded him, fingers sliding into Remus' hair as his hips thrust forward.

Remus moaned low in his throat at the taste of Severus, the feel of the thick cock stretching his mouth wide, relaxed his throat and swallowed him whole. He was vaguely aware of the shout of pleasure that escaped Severus' throat, but he was far more focused on tasting every inch of the man in his mouth. He pulled his lips up the shaft, sucking as he went, sliding his tongue into the slit and searching out the fluid there.

Severus' fingers tightened in Remus' hair and pulled him off his cock, mouth going unerringly to Remus' neck, fangs puncturing skin and vein with the flex of his jaw. His fingers pulled at Remus' trousers, hauling them down past his hips, fingers curling around the hard length he found there. It was all he could do to pull away from the taste of Remus blood; fresh, addictive, a dark pleasure he knew he was already addicted to.

"Take them off," he growled, already toeing off his shoes and stepping out of his own trousers and pants. He stepped back in and pressed Remus to the wall, pulling the other man's legs up and around his body. He summoned lube and plunged two fingers into the tight passage, eyes blazing brighter as heat closed around them.

Remus' eyes rolled into the back of his head, hips thrusting forwards to pull those fingers deeper. Impatient now, Severus slid his fingers free, rubbed the rest of the lube on his cock and pushed into Remus with one violent thrust. Taken completely by his nature, he slammed hard and fast into Remus' body, over and over, and over again.

"Now," he growled before he sank his teeth into Remus' skin once more, sucking hard, blood filling his mouth. A choked whimper sounded in his throat as he felt teeth pierce his skin, this time on the opposite shoulder. The feeling of blood leaving his body as he took Remus' pushed his need higher. Faster and faster he moved, Remus' cock rubbing against his belly until he felt Remus convulse around him, felt the teeth pull free from his shoulder, and he felt his own orgasm explode from within him.

Severus drank until Remus went limp, drank until his heartbeat slowed and faded, drank until he sensed it was time to stop. He slid to the floor, taking Remus with him, still buried inside him as he slit his wrist and held it to Remus' slack lips, fingers stroking his throat to make him swallow. Long minutes later he removed his hand and slowly pulled free of Remus' body. He lifted Remus and staggered into the werewolf's bedroom, setting the lax body down before he climbed in beside him.

"Mine," he murmured. He pulled the blankets up to cover them and settled down to sleep. They would sleep the night through, likely most of the day as well. His lips curved in a small smile as he considered the note he'd left for Minerva, explaining the possibility that neither he nor Remus would be available the next day. Somehow he'd known the night would end this way.

Remus now belonged to him, much as he belonged to Remus, and Severus closed his eyes and allowed a contented sigh to leave his lips. When they awoke, he would take his mate to meet his Principal. Remus now not only had a mate, but a family. As he drifted off to sleep, he wondered what Remus would make of his new family, his pack. Eternity was just beginning, and neither of them would face it alone.
