Prologue
Albus watched his father for a few moments as the train started away, his excitement and nervousness growing. He looked to Rose, standing next to him, her face mirroring his feelings.
"Shall we go and find a compartment then?" she asked.
"Yeah," Al replied, "let's find an empty one...there's no way James would sit with us."
The two started off down the narrow hall, passing compartment after compartment full of excited students, all chattering about the summer and the coming school year. Finally they found a compartment holding only one, solitary boy.
"Mind if we join you?" Rose asked cheerily.
The boy's eyes widened slightly, then narrowed when he saw Albus, watching him shyly, partially blocked by his cousin. He nodded, though, and the two moved into the compartment, sitting opposite the boy. Albus recognized him as the boy his parents and aunt and uncle had been talking about on the platform, the son of Draco Malfoy.
"I'm Rose Weasley, and this is my cousin, Albus Potter," Rose continued in that same cheery tone.
"I am Scorpius Malfoy," the boy replied, a slight sneer playing across his face, "are you sure you want to sit with me?"
Rose was taken aback, for a moment, by Scorpius' bluntness. Albus glanced at his cousin and spoke up in her stead, albeit fumbling slightly over his words.
"My dad told me that we shouldn't judge you because our parents... he said that your dad chose right in the end... so we could be friends, that is if you wanted to be."
"That;s right," Rose put in, finding her voice again.
The sneer left Scorpius' face, to be replaced by surprise.
"Really?" he said, "You don't think... well, I suppose I'd like to be friends, too." He looked from Rose to Albus, somewhat nervous, and it seemed that the haughty expression he had worn moments before had been somewhat of a show.
"Yes," said Rose, with authority. "After all, we are not our parents. And I can think of nothing that would bug my dad more than my being friends with a Malfoy," she added with a sly grin spreading across her face.
Alus and Scorpius grinned back, and it was decided. A Malfoy, a Weasley and a Potter were to become the best of friends.
