New Beginnings
======================================================================================
Hermione sat flipping through the daily prophet, idly listening to the chatter coming from Harry and Ron across from her. She smiled slightly as Harry began to laugh. It had been so long since she had heard the sound.
"So 'Mione, anything interesting behind that paper of yours?" Ron asked, familiar amusement edging his tone.
"Not today. Seems the new Ministry has done a fine job of cleaning it up. It's not used solely as a gossip fodder, and from what I can tell the truth has been printed."
Harry scoffed, "Don't count on the whole truth always being present in the Prophet 'Mione. They still have Skeeter on staff."
Hermione chuckled and flipped to the second page letting out a small squeak as she came face to face with a picture of herself. Horrified she swiveled her eyes up toward the headline gracing the article to find two more horrendous things.
Letting out an outraged scream she flung the paper down and jumped from her seat running toward the fireplace, ignoring Harry and Rons questions as she went. As of this moment, Hermione Granger was on a mission. Questions could be answered later.
She was going to kill Rita Skeeter.
Draco stormed through the ministry, intent on finding the new office to the Daily Prophet. His mind buzzing out only one thought, Kill. Kill. KILL!
It didn't matter that he had just escaped Azkaban by the skin of his neck, it didn't matter that last night he had gone to bed with plans to begin restoring the Malfoy name. All that mattered was that the vile, despicable cockroach of a woman burn.
If that sent him to Azkaban and ruined his family name further, so be it.
It'll be worth it.
He flung open the door to the Prophets offices and stormed through. He paused slightly when he met the silence of the room, everyone was staring at him, fear etched across each expression. 'Good' he thought, a sneer forming upon his own features.
He opened his mouth to demand someone give the bitch up when another voice behind him stopped him mid sentence. "Where in Hades is that blasted woman! By Merlin someone point me to Rita Skeeter this instant!"
His heart froze. It couldn't be. Slowly as if in a dream he turned around coming face to face with the curly haired nightmare of his former Hogwarts years.
Apparently it could be.
He took in her appearance. She was still in pajamas, a silk robe hanging off her shoulders, feet bare. Her hair was unruly as usual, and her eyes were spitting a fire he hadn't seen since the war a year prior.
Without understanding Draco's breath hitched and he became nervous. She always had been a force to be reckoned with.
Hermione was fuming and from the looks on these people's faces, no one wanted to be in her line of fire.
Slowly she took in each face before resting upon the man in front of her. He was dressed immacutely, although he seemed to have on two very different shoes. Were they even on the right feet? Her perusal continued. He was lean but obviously muscular. He came from money, if his manicured hands were any indication. Her gaze continued its way upwards to land on his ridiculously familiar face.
"Oh." All the wind knocked from her lungs as Hermione Granger found herself staring into the piercing eyes of Draco Malfoy.
As she tried to piece her suddenly frazzled mind back together, the sound of the door opening behind her shook her senses.
" - Thank you Aimsworth, it was quite the breaking story. I expect - -" Rita Skeeter slid through the door the instant Hermione turned around.
"Oh Look! Here we have the happy couple now!" she shrilled, clapping her hands together like an over enthusiastic soccer mom.
Hermione, brain now in tact, felt her blood boil once more and without thought had her wand in hand and aimed at the woman's throat.
"How Dare you!" she seethed, "How dare you write that atrocious piece of gobshite! Did my fourth year at Hogwarts teach you nothing? Or have you been missing your jar?"
Draco took in the scene before him, utterly bewildered. What in Salazar's salty sack did fourth year and a jar have to do with this? but as he thought it he watched the color drain from Skeeter's face. Clearly he was missing something important, and devastatingly juicy.
"I-I assure you Miss Granger that I do not miss that. I also assure you, that I would never make the mistake of printing false articles regarding you. I have indeed learned my lesson in that regard." Rita whispered.
Draco was surprised to feel the electricity run from Granger to himself, "Don't you lie to me you vile disgusting excuse of a witch!" she snarled.
Rita took a step back and for some reason Draco found himself proud of Granger.
"I got the story from Minister Shacklebolt himself." Rita bit back with slight more edge than Draco had heard from her in this entire exchange.
"Why you..."
Draco had barely enough time to restrain Granger from attacking Skeeter. Something odd had registered with him in the reporter's last comment.
Hermione struggled against the strong grip around her midsection, intent on skinning Rita Skeeter with her bare hands. Whipping around she found herself nose to chest with a man. Looking up she was surprised to find herself wrapped in the arms of Draco Malfoy.
"Malfoy let me go!" She snapped, aiming a well-placed fist at his chest.
She heard him grunt, "And allow the Princess of the Golden Trio to be thrown in Azkaban for murder, I think not Granger."
An outraged noise bubbled out of her throat as she began to struggle once again, "It'd be worth it to cause the death of this lying, manipulative, deceitful old hag!"
To her astonishment a chuckle rose from his throat, "Come on Granger. I don't think Skeeter is the one you want to skin today. I believe we need to be speaking with Minister Shacklebolt."
Hermione froze. No. No, it couldn't be.
Hermione sagged against Malfoy as the reality of what was happening sunk in. She allowed him to lead her from the Prophets office and through the floo to the Ministry.
They had done it. They had passed that blasted law!

Two Weeks Later
===============================================
Hermione stood staring at herself in the mirror, not fully comprehending what she was seeing.
"Oh my! You look- oh 'Mione" Hermione turned to see Ginny in tears.
"Oh Gin!" Hermione sighed, carefully lifting the skirts of the dress she wore so as not to trip. Hermione wrapped her arms around the red haired woman slowly, hoping for it to be the last time she would have to extend comfort to her regarding this day.
"I-it's just, you-you look so be-beautiful. I just I-I'm so proud of you 'Mione" Ginny hiccupped and pulled away to dry her tears, leaving Hermione to turn back around and stare at her reflection in the mirror once more.
Looking at her reflection she couldn't quite believe she was stood there in her wedding gown. She heaved in a large breath hoping it would help to prepare herself for the day ahead. The day where she became Mrs. Hermione Malfoy.
It had been only two weeks ago that her fate had been sealed by Ministry hands. As Mal-Draco led her through the Ministry, she had known, known it deep in the pits of her soul that the Ministry had made the biggest mistake of their barely there careers. They had passed the bloody marriage law.
A knock sounded at the door and Hermione whirled around in surprise. Was it time already? She watched as Ginny bustled over to the door and opened it. A small sound of surprise alerted Hermione and she watched as Ginny nodding her head, opened the door further.
Hermione took in her husband-to-be. He had always been handsome, even in her hatred, she could admit that. Somehow though, he seemed to exude beauty today.
Why in Merlin's name should he shine today is beyond me.
"I know that I'm not suppose to see the Bride before the ceremony, but seeing as this isn't a conventional wedding, I thought I could skip the tradition." His voice was low, nervous.
Color me intrigued.
"I'll just leave you two to talk. I should go find Harry and Ron." Before Hermione could protest Ginny was out the door in a blur of lavender and Weasley red.
She continued to stare as she watched him close the door. He turned to face her with an odd expression.
"You look beautiful." He said quietly.
Her response was silence.
"Listen Gran-Hermione. I thought since we'll be married for the rest of our lives, we should put the animosity aside. I know you never wanted this and neither did I. Marriage hadn't even been in my future. However, seeing as we have no choice, shouldn't we try to make it work?"
She raised her eyebrows; this was not the ferret she had come to know and loathe. Somehow this one made her nervous. Her hand slowly went to her stomach to try and stem the flight of butterflies.
He cleared his throat and continued, "I don't mean we have to love one another. I don't think we could, there's too much history, but we've both grown and learned. We've both seen the best and worst of life, and I personally would prefer to have the best in life. All I'm saying is we should hold some civility toward one another."
Was he serious?
Hermione slowly walked toward him, watching him as he watched her. Steadily she held her hand out, "I can be civil so long as you are." Her words were measured, and she was proud of herself when her voice didn't quiver.
She watched him nod and as he took her hand a jolt shot through her unexpecting body causing her to gasp softly.
Interesting
"I'll see you downstairs then...Hermione."
She nodded mutely, too stuck in the feelings shooting from her fingertips to do more.
Draco stood at the front of the alter, watching as the guests took their seats. He watched as his Mother and Greg took a moment to seat themselves at the front of the Groom's side. Somehow he could find the amusement in this odd situation. The Bride's side was near to over flowing, while his side was graced with the presence of two people. How utterly ironic really.
Shaking his head, Draco continued to stare out into the sea of faces that were Hermione's friends and family. As he studied everyone he was surprised to hear the beginnings of the music float about his head.
He straightened his back and swiveled his gaze just in time to see Hermione emerge with Potter and the Weasel-Weasley. She was a sight. Clad in a muggle wedding gown, riotous curls flowing about her shoulders, a small tentative smile gracing her features, she looked like an angel.
He was unable to focus his train of thoughts, unable to concentrate on what was happening around him. All he was able to do was stare at the woman who now stood before him.
He heard the words of the ministry wizard assigned to wed them, but did not register what was being said. He went through the "I do's" without knowledge; the only thing that he seemed to hear was;
"You may now kiss your Bride."
As his lips connected with hers a bolt of electricity shot through his body. His magic seemed to swirl and dance within him and he felt lightheaded in its intensity.
His only cognitive thought being; Thank you for the new beginning.
