“Don't look at me. Stop staring!! You don't
know, YOU DON'T KNOW!!”
The words were echoing in her, distantly. All day.
Every minute since that day. Every second, since that day...
And yet she didn't know why.
Why did it do this to her? Why couldn't
she just forget about it? It wasn't even aimed at her. So why
couldn't she just
forget about it?
“Why can't you all just... go away? Just, go
away...”
She was hurt by this. None
of the other things mattered, but those words hurt her. She thought
Ginny trusted her, thought she knew. Thought she knew! Luna didn't
know what to do anymore, with her head filled with thoughts
threatening to drive her crazy. Maybe it would be simpler... But,
Luna thought Ginny knew... Were she wrong? Didn't she know? Or maybe
she just didn't care... But would that really be better?
Luna sobbed, sitting in
her bedroom at Hogwarts alone, waiting for no one. No one would come,
either way. Since she started, not one had shared a laugh with her,not one had cried for her, nor had one ever comforted her. At least... not in Ravenclaw. So she knew, no one would come.
But she didn't care, she
said to herself, she didn't need the other Ravenclaw students. She
would be fine, alone... The others didn't even think she needed
comfort, that she had emotions at all. They all believed she was a
weirdo, not capable of love or sadness.
Loony, how can you even
wear that? Don't you notice how ugly it is? Loony, strange and weird
Loony. How can you? What is the matter with you? Why are you so
weird? Loony, loony...
This was going on forever,
since the first day... She didn't have friends in the Ravenclaw
house, and after all they had done to her, she never wanted any
either. She had friends, in the other houses. Especially in
Gryffindor. Especially in the same year as her. Especially a girl, in
Gryffindor, in the same year as Luna. Or, she thought before... After
what happened she thought she would be alone again, and she sobbed
loudly, covering her face with her hands.
“Luna? Are you
there?”
She jumped up in surprise,
turning to the door, thinking the other girls came to tease her
again.
“Luna? I can see
you, you know... Come on, Luna?”
She didn't believe her
eyes, yet, the girl standing at the door was a friend. A friend from
Gryffindor, non the least.
“How did you get up
here?” Luna asked, as she didn't think students could visit
other houses common rooms. She straightened up, sitting in the middle
of her bed.
“I forced Terry Boot
to open the door for me, and then I threatened some girls to turn
them into little birds if they didn't show me the way.”
Hermione said with a smile, going up beside Luna's bed.
“Why
do you sit up here sulking, anyway? We haven't seen you for days,
Neville is going crazy with worry.”
“I didn't think
anyone would notice...” Luna said, under her breath.
Hermione sat down beside
her, looking at her. She then suddenly took her hand, looking forward
and said:
“Of course we
notice. Even if the blokes in Ravenclaw are to stupid to even
remember your name, we will always see you. Did you even think that
we wouldn't care if you just stayed up here for a few days?”
She sad, with a sad little smile.
“I... Didn't think
so long. I never thought you would... Never thought of you...”
“So, you didn't
think of us? How rude, believing you could just cosy up her all by
yourself, leaving us, your dear and caring friends, in the outside
world with all our troubles and all our issues we thought you could
help us with... That's mean Luna”
“No, I didn't...
Well, I thought..”
“Relax Luna, we took
care of it all, all on our own. Besides, it was all joke anyway.”
She said.
“Anyway, since we
didn't see you for a few days, we thought you had a cold, or were
faking your way out of lessons, or something like that. But since
this is the third day you were gone we, together, decided that I
would go and check up on you, since neither Neville or Harry can come
this far. And then I found you, sitting all alone, sobbing, and, you
know... And I guess this isn't something about the Snorcacks or the
Humbellusterthingys, right?... Luna, what happened? ” Hermione
finally began to express worry in her voice, looking at Luna.
For a while Luna didn't
say anything, thinking on what grieved her the most. She stared down
on her knees, wondering, and at last, just before Hermione were going
to talk again, Luna quietly asked:
“...How is Ginny?”
“Ginny? But, wh...
She's alright I guess... I mean, havn't noticed anything about her.”
Hermione said.
“Maybe you're not
watching close enough” Luna continued to stare at her knees,
asking as quietly as before.
“Hey, what do you
mean with that? You think we wouldn't notice if anything was wrong
with her?” Hermione asked, a bit hurt.
Luna didn't say anything
more, she just sat and thought about what Hermione said. Could that
really be true? Didn't it matter, after all? She stared aimlessly in
front of her, until Hermione spoke again.
“Hey... Luna, I'm
sorry if that last bit sounded a little... you know. But, to think
that we wouldn't notice when our friends are hurt... Twice you said
that now, don't you trust us?”
Luna merely fell silent,
not knowing what to say. Hermione sighed and stood up, stroking Luna
over the shoulder as she turned.
“People down there
miss you, Luna. It may feel right now, but you can't shut yourself up
here all
the time. Go down for dinner at least... We are worried
about you, Luna”
And with that, Hermione went
down the stairs.
Luna continued to stare in front of her, thinking of what Hermione said. Oh Merlin, she didn't even think of them before. How could she forget about them, Harry and Ron, and Hermione... Neville...
Luna felt horrible as the guilt struck her, now harder and harsher than before, and she began to cry, weeping louder and louder, until she screamed out her pain.
"
Run, little bird, do not jump, do not fly. You can't.
I stole your wings.
Run, faster! Faster!
Little bird.
Stupid...
You can not do it, anymore.
Don't try to fly.
You can't.
Just run.
No, little bird, don't try.
You can't leave me here.
It is impossible.
I caught you.
You are mine!
This is all my fault.
Little bird...
