shot, but if I have enough reader response, maybe I’ll continue the idea into
something bigger. ^.^ Anyways, on with the story!

Rebirth
As it always seemed to do, the sun shined brightly in their
little stretch of Heaven. Was it possible for it to rain? It did, but only when
they wanted to have some fun in the rain, and usually it was a light
drizzle. A gentle breeze swept across
verdant, grassy fields as the young man with sandy blonde hair lay stretched
out on the ground. He appeared to be asleep, but no one really slept here. They
didn’t need sleep. Or food, though the food was terribly wonderful, and in
abundance.
“Here I come, James!” Sirius yelled as he did a tackling
lunge at his best friend. James Potter yelled as he went down, both toppling
over Remus as he broke from his daydreaming. Since
coming here he did that pretty often. He made a grunt as they landed on him and
looked at his friends.
“I didn’t think we could feel pain here,” he said, voice
straining. James and Sirius laughed. It seemed all were able to choose the
forms they had enjoyed most in life up here. And of course, the Marauders had
had the most fun when they had been boys in school. James’s face reddened and
he laughed loudly, reaching up to scratch at his head, and further messing up
his already messy hair.
“It’s just remembered stuff, Remus,”
Sirius said, “You’re not hurt.”
“Sorry, mate,” James said, all the same. “Just
celebrating.”
“Celebrating? What?” Remus asked
as the other two finally got off of him. They rose from the ground, dusting
their uniforms off, from habit and memory of it of course, and walking along
now.
“Harry’s getting more
grandchildren,” James said with pride.
“Oh? It’s that Weasley blood, I’m
sure of it. They’re like rabbits,” Remus said,
laughing softly. “Have you told Lily yet?”
“No, he hasn’t,” Sirius said, frowning. “She’s off at the
river again.”
“Again?” Remus
asked.
“She goes every day,” James said, smiling a bit more. “I
don’t have the heart to tell her no. They look like they’re having so much
fun.”
“HEY! No fair!” they heard the high voice yell up ahead. The
river, as wished, ran by the fields, and wasn’t too far from where they usually
met. In the sparkling, blue water, the girl’s flame hued head popped from the
water and she made an angry pout at the tall young man approaching. Her uniform
resembled James, Sirius, and Remus’s, but the other
young man wore no uniform. He had on a black jumper and grey slacks, but no
house marks at all. He didn’t want to have them as reminders of the things that
had kept him from his friend in life. The boy’s lank, black hair was stirred
briefly by the breeze as he laughed down at the girl.
“What? It was your fault, Lily,” he said. The deep voice
that so many students had feared, even at the end of his life on earth, was softer, and not as deep in this youthful form. Though it hadn’t lost any of its snark.
“That wasn’t fair, Sev!” Lily
yelled at him as she stood up. She was soaked, but it wouldn’t be a problem in
a minute. “Now look at me,” she complained.
“You’ll be dry in five minutes, what’s the point in getting
upset?” Severus asked.
“The point,” Lily
said, putting her hands on her hips, “Is that you made me trip on purpose!”
“So?” he asked, head cocking to the left.
“So! No fair!” she insisted, going up to him and hitting his
chest with her fists.
“That doesn’t hurt you know,” he said, a smirk briefly
gracing his face.
“Doesn’t mean I can’t try!!” But
though her words were supposed to be angry, she was giggling her head off.
“Oi!” called James, lifting his
hand to wave to the girl who had been his girlfriend, then wife, then mother of
his child once. She stopped her assault on her own best friend and turned to
wave at the three approaching boys. Severus had a look without emotion, though
once he’d come to this place, a place he’d been sure once he had no right to be
in, he had no anger or animosity towards his old ‘foes’. Now he knew that such
feelings were petty, and didn’t mean anything. Just as the boys who’d once
tormented him knew that their own actions had been shameful, and childish. Oh,
they ‘played’ at the old rivalries and competition, but they didn’t really feel
any hate or anger. No one could here.
“Hey!” Lily called back. She left the side of one dark
haired wizard for the other, but Severus slowly followed, long legs swishing in
the water till they stepped upon the green grass bank.
“Guess what, Lil,” James said, his
voice perpetually cheerful. “Harry’s having more
grandchildren!”
“Oh joy,” Severus said, rolling his eyes,
and voice dripping with sarcasm as he took up standing at Lily’s right, since
James had linked arms with her on the left. “More ‘perfect’ Potter offspring
polluting the world down there, you must be so
ecstatic.”
“What are you complaining about?” Sirius asked, leaning a
bit to look up at the slightly taller boy. “You don’t have to teach any of
them. I wish I could be there, though, I’d show them all some grand fun!”
“I’ve no doubt you would,” a voice said from the small hill
above them. The group turned their heads upward to see the form of their
mentor, the leader of the secret rebellion that sought to stop the evil that
they’d all given their lives, in the end, coming down. The wind made his
midnight blue robes billow behind him, and caused the long silvery beard and
hair to flow. It seemed that even in paradise, Albus
Dumbledore seemed happiest in the form of a wizened sage. His blue eyes
sparkled at them as he joined his former pupils. “Therefore I think you’ll be
happy with the news I have for you.”
“Oh?” Remus asked, smiling now.
Another lovely thing about paradise, you didn’t have scars. Remus’s
visage held no trace of the scars that had given lycanthropy in life. Unmarred,
he wasn’t bad looking at all. “Have the, ah, ‘Higher Ups’ been watching us again?”
“They’re always watching,” muttered Severus.
“True,” Albus said to the lad
who’d once been his most trusted friend and ally. “And yes, Remus,
they have been watching. As well as watching things down below. There are many
families expecting children this year. As it is, they’ve come to some decisions
about a few certain souls who, they think, deserve another go at life down
there.” He smiled, eyes twinkling more.
It took a moment for them to gather what he was getting at.
Sirius let out a loud whoop of excitement, jumping up. “Did they!? Are we going
back? Really?!”
Albus chuckled, and nodded his
head. “Yes. All of you. You’ve been given another
chance.”
James and Sirius burst into cheers and laughter, jumping and
slapping their hands together. “Another chance!” James
shouted with joy. “Another chance at adventure!”
“Another chance for fun!” Sirius
chorused.
Remus smiled, and took a deep
breath. “Another chance for a normal life,” he said, feeling his heart filling
with happiness.
“Another chance…?” murmured Severus.
He’d been quite shocked at hearing this news. He couldn’t fathom it. Going
back? It felt like he’d only just got here.
“Another chance,” said Lily, giggling softly, and taking her
friend’s hand. He started and looked down at her bright face. “Another chance for friendship!”
He couldn’t help but smile. “Yes… Another
chance for friendship… and love.”
James came up behind them, arms going around both their
shoulders. Severus was startled again and had dropped her hand, but she’d
grabbed it again. “Yeah,” James agreed. “Another chance to
steal her again, eh? Which one of us will win this time?” Lily frowned
and gently jutted her arm back to hit James in the stomach. No pain of course,
but he grunted and backed off anyway. “Sorry,” he said.
“You better be. Don’t be mean this time,” she chastised.
Severus couldn’t stop the grin from going on his face.
“Well then,” Albus said, clapping
his hands together. “All set to go?”
“Um, Albus,” Remus
said, “What about…um…” his face reddened a bit as he began asking the question.
“Nymphadora
knows. She says have fun, and she’ll catch up with you in a few years. This
time, I think, they won’t let there be such an age gap,” the old wizard
answered, teasing him a bit and giving a wink. “Now, my dear children…My friends,”
his voice was touched with the pride and feeling of affection he felt for these
children, who’d grown up before his eyes, whom he regarded as his own dear
grandchildren, “Its time. I promise… Though life will never be perfect, you
will, this time, have something much happier. Though you won’t remember
everything, you’ll be able to take one memory with you. I pray it is the right
memory.” He then turned and began leading them up the hill. They would be going
to a castle that rest far in the distance. Oh, it wasn’t Hogwarts. It was
grander. And its walls made of perfect, pure white stone that glittered like
stars. Here, all souls came, and all souls rested, and from here they would be
sent back to the world, to be reborn into new lives just beginning. Not
everyone was given this chance. But, the few who were, rarely made the same
mistakes twice, and always came back again, with no
regrets.
As they made their slow way
back, Severus’s head dipped down to look at the ground. What would life be like
this time? Would he able to handle it? What if he did make the same mistakes?
He felt a squeeze to his hand. He looked over, and Lily was smiling at him.
“Just remember,” she said. “I’ll be waiting…” She looked ahead briefly, and
then lifted her head up to whisper in his ear, “My memory will be you… Us by
the river, remember?”
His face went a very bright
scarlet over his pale skin. His voice emitted a soft, nervous laugh, such a
rare sound it used to be, and whispered back, “I… You’ll always be my memory…
Lily…”
She blushed as well now. “I’ll
be waiting.”
“… I’ll always find you,” he
promised.
