Chapter 1: The meeting
He couldn’t believe Severus drug him to a muggle pub. He tried to appear relaxed, but the youth in this place set him on edge.
Severus patted his arm, “Relax, they can’t hurt you. Think of it this way, no one here knows who you are.” He gave a smirk, “Be glad it’s not Draco who brought you here.”
Lucius set his silver eyes on his oldest friend, “What do you mean by that?” He growled softly.
Severus shook his head, “He would have left you alone by now.”
Lucius looked appalled at the thought of being left alone here, “I don’t see why you brought me here in the first place.”
Black eyes met his silver ones soberly, “Because, ever since Narcissa passed you’ve been miserable. It’s been 15 years. You’ve turned down every woman in our world. You may as well give a muggle woman a chance. Perhaps it will get you back into the swing of courting a woman.”
Lucius couldn’t’ argue his point. It was true. He never thought to find a new wife after the loss of Narcissa in the Great War. He even refused to see his mistress. He gave a resigned sigh and let his eyes roam the mass of people.
Severus relaxed as much as possible and went back to brooding. He still didn’t like public places and many women were afraid of the long jagged scar on his neck. He shook his head, the sacrifices he made for his only true friend.
A laugh rang out in the booth near them. It was a rich musical alto.
Silver eyes locked on a rich dark blond pony tail with a string of red and black beads on a leather thong dangling over her hair, “She’s here every Friday with those friends of hers.” Severus gave Lucius a knowing smile.
Lucius huffed, “Chattering I suppose.” He couldn’t understand the beads or the slight point of her ears. Never the less, he was most intrigued.
“No, relaxing. She’s a student at the local university in London. I’ve seen her here often.” Severus mused.
The woman stood and revealed a curvaceous body that made Lucius was to touch. She hugged her friends, “I’ll see you guys later. I’m going for a walk.”
Severus had to choke back a laugh as Lucius groaned, “She’s American!”
The woman gathered her purse and started for the door when one of her friends called out, “Oi! Sara! Take your cape mate!”
Sara turned back and a smile lit up her face, “Sorry, forgot.” She reached out and picked up a multi-shade blue knitted cloak. It covered her figure from shoulder to hip and for some reason Lucius felt a twinge of disappointment. With a wave to her friends, she started for the door, the cape swishing around her body, giving anyone looking peek a boo flashes of her hips as she walked. Her friends resumed their chattering as Lucius tuned them out, his eyes still following Sara as she walked away.
They didn’t notice the two men who stood up as she walked past them, but he did and he didn’t need legimacy to know their intentions weren’t pure as the sunlight shining outside the pub. “Come on, those boys are going to hurt her.” He growled and Severus looked up from his whiskey at the boys and nodded, “Indeed they are.”
Sara wasn’t as oblivious as Lucius or the boys believed; she knew the boys were following her. She had always known when she as in danger.
Lucius and Severus caught up just in time to see one boy reach out and tug on the beads dangling in her hair, “Oi, birdie want a date?” The obviously drunk boy tried to croon.
Sara sighed and gently pulled the beads from his hand, “Not with you.” She growled, turning to face them, “You are drunk, and it’s only noon. I don’t date drunkards.” Anger flashed in her eyes; from where Lucius stood they appeared hazel.
The boy and his friend laughed, “We weren’t asking birdie.” He stepped closer, hoping to intimidate her.
All four men were shocked when she didn’t move. She smiled, “I’m still turning you down.” She let her foot fall back as though she were getting ready to wizard’s duel without a wand.
Lucius was surprised she knew a fighting stance given her size and shapely body.
From the look on Severus’ face so was he.
“Cheeky little bint!” The boy growled reaching for her hand, “I’ll teach you some respect!”
As soon as his hand touched hers she was moving. In an impressive show of martial arts the man flew up into the air, only to land face down with Sara’s knee in between his shoulders, “I said no.”
The second boy charged at her. Before Lucius could react, Sara’s leg shot out, forcing her knee deeper into the first boy. A loud crack was heard and the second boy screamed, crumpling in pain. “Oh shut up, it’s just a bruised knee!” She snapped.
Lucius took the opportunity to flag down a muggle police officer. He quickly explained the situation and both boys were arrested to drunk in public and attempted assault.
Sara waved at the officer before disappearing into the park, a pair of baby blue ear buds sticking out of her ears.
Severus turned back to the pub, “She’s safe, let’s find you a date.”
Lucius shook his head, “Already found her.”
Severus gave him a knowing smirk, “Then go talk to her. I’m going home for some real whiskey. Good luck.”
Lucius nodded and began to follow Sara. It didn’t take long for him to catch up to her. Her leisurely gate caused her to move at a snail’s pace in front of him.
She didn’t know he was behind her. She felt no danger from him. It didn’t help she was lost in the music she listened to.
Before his very eyes she began to sway as she sang to herself, “I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems…”
He swore her voice was the most beautiful he had ever heard without the aid of magic.
When her voice faded on the crescendo of the song he made his move, “Sing it again.” He spoke as he put his hand on her shoulder softly.
He wasn’t prepared when she jumped and turned to look at him, “Beg your pardon?” She replied pulling one of the little ear buds out.
Lucius used his most disarming smile, “Please sing that song again.”
She blushed, “You like Evanescence?”
He shook his head, “Never heard of them, but I do like your voice.”
She smiled slowly, “Alright.” She tucked the ear bud back in and restarted the song, “How can you see into my eyes…” She quickly lost herself in the song again, moving to the beat. He felt like he was under a spell as she watched her perform for him. He stepped closer without even realizing it.
“Bring me to life…..” She ended, a smile gracing her lips. She opened her eyes slowly, tucking the ear buds and iPod back into her bag. She took a subtle stepped back, just enough to give herself a small amount of breathing space.
He clapped softly, “Beautiful, simply beautiful.” He smiled broadly at her.
She blushed, “I know you. Or at least someone who looks like you.”
He nodded, “My son. He frequents the pub you were in today.”
She smiled, “You followed me. You were the one who summoned the authorities.”
He let himself gloat inwardly; she had noticed him, “Yes. I wanted to make sure you were well. And perhaps ask you for dinner. However, your voice distracted me.”
She didn’t miss a beat and smiled wider, “After what you saw, you followed me AND want to ask me on a date?”
He bowed his head in a cordial manner, “Of course. I had wanted to ask you in the pub, but you left before I had stood.”
She nodded, “Alright, I will accompany you for dinner. On two conditions,” She paused to take a breath, "Tell me you name and walk me home. I have class soon.”
Lucius covered his smug look by taking her hand and bowing over it, “I would be honored.” He kissed her hand lightly, “I am Lucius Malfoy.”
She suppressed a giggle and shook his hand firmly but warmly, “Pleasure to meet you. I’m Sara Jenson.”
‘Not at much as you will later.’ He thought as he straightened to his full height. He realized just how small she was in that moment. He was over six feet tall and her head barely came to the center of his chest, “I can say the same.” He smiled down at her.
She had to tilt her head to see him, finding herself a mere two feet from him, “Tall.” She breathed softly as her eyes met his.
From this distance he could see her eyes were a soft blend of green and honey, how he mistook them for hazel he never knew. He cleared his throat and offered his arm to her, “Which way is your home?”
She smiled as she slipped her arm into his larger one, “The dormitories at the university.”
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
By the time they had reached the door to her dorm building, Lucius had learned a lot about the small woman walking with him. He learned she was a law student, singer, she had younger siblings, her father died when she was young. The last tidbit made his heart ache slightly when she told him her mom had passed shortly after she turned 18, leaving her a hefty sum of life insurance money to divide up amongst her siblings and herself. She used her fourth to pay for law school.
Sara in turned learned a bit about Lucius. She now knew he had only one son, was an only child, and had lost his first wife 15 years before. She discovered he had a wicked sense of humor. More than once though, she had to assure him, their age difference wasn’t an issue, after all, her parents were nearly 30 years apart when she was born.
She leaned against the door, “This is me.” She smiled up at him.
He shook his head and smiled smugly, “A gentleman always escorts his lady right to her door.”
She couldn’t help but chuckle, “This is going to take some getting used to.”
He inclined his head softly, “You will accept it.” He tried not to sound imperial, but he couldn’t help the natural Malfoy cockiness for long.
Something flashed in her eyes before she smiled, “Yes, I believe I will.” Let him think he’s the boss…for now.
He tucked her arm into the crook of his and tugged the door open, “Which room is yours?”
She grinned, “Flat you mean.”
He blinked, “Beg your pardon?”
She returned his smug smile, “This dormitory building is actually flats. Two bed-rooms, two bath flats. Mine is on the second floor.”
She waved her hand towards the stairs.
His Slytherin mind wrapped around what she had done and smiled, she had goaded him. “Very well, the second floor it is.” He let her go up the stairs first, that way if she fell; he would either catch her or break their fall as they landed on the first floor landing. It also gave him an excellent view of her behind. He was slammed with need harder than he had felt since the death of Cissa. He almost groaned, but managed to shake it from his head, reasoning the cause to be his lack of female companionship for 15 years.
Sara heard him exhale behind her and nearly laughed. She suppressed her chuckle, “Thank you for seeing me home Lucius.”
He straightened rather stiffly and gave a curt nod, “It is the gentlemanly thing to do.”
They walked in silence to her door and she turned to smile at him.
He opened his mouth to suggest a time when she grinned, “7 is fine.” He nodded dumbfounded at how she knew the time he was going to suggest. Before he could ask, she kissed his chin and vanished through the door.
Lucius shook his head as he walked away. For a muggle she was most assuredly interesting.
