“Don’t worry Al! I’m sure all the Slytherins will be happy to welcome you!”
“Shut up James.”
“Green always was your color.”
“I said shut up James!”
“It will be okay. I’m sure you won’t be totally disowned.”
Albus let the door to the compartment slam shut behind him as he left in a fury. He knew that James was just trying to be funny, but sometimes he took things way too far. Unfortunately, his older brother had always known exactly how to get under his skin.
Albus clenched his fist only to realize how sweaty his palms were. This was always his symptom of being nervous. What he really needed right now was too cool down and clear his mind. Reentering the compartment with his brother after such a dramatic exit would not help to make things better. The only option was to walk the length of the train and hope he could cool down before reaching Hogwarts.
As he neared the end of the train the noise of passengers became less and less, the area not nearly as populated.
“Sorry to bother you,” said a voice from behind “but do you know when we will be reaching the platform?”
Slightly startled Albus swung around. “Um… well ah last time I asked my brother and he said…” As Albus readjusted his glasses, he realized who he was speaking to. Scorpius Malfoy stood before him dressed half in Hogwarts robes half in jeans.
Realizing who he was speaking to Scorpius hastily added “uh. Sorry never mind.” He turned to go back into his compartment.
“No wait. I mean, well, James told me about 30 minutes we should be there.” Albus stammered out, unsure exactly how to act around the son of his father’s one time teenage rival.
“Oh, okay then.” Scorpius replied, apparently feeling the same unease as Albus. “Well thanks then.”
Albus peered around Scorpius into the compartment he was standing in front of and realized he was completely alone. Not one other person had ridden the train with Scorpius on his first trip to Hogwarts. Perhaps it was his overly sympathetic side coming out, but this fact seemed to upset Albus. Before he could stop himself he blurted out “Would you perhaps want some company?”
Scorpius looked behind him into the compartment as if he did not even realize he was alone. “Ah, sure. Come on in.” The blond stood aside as Albus entered the compartment. As Albus entered the compartment he instantly noticed several books, one of which had been left open as if it was being read only seconds earlier. I seemed as if Scorpius had known he would be alone and brought a lot with him to pass the time. Again, this upset Albus.
“Like to read?” He asked taking a seat among the books, only to moments later realize how silly he must sound asking the question.
“Yeah.” Scorpius replied awkwardly looking at the floor. A few seconds passed with awkward silence and the shuffling of feet. This time it was Scorpius’ turn to ask an obvious question. “You are Harry Potter’s son right?”
“Yeah, that’s me. Harry Potter’s son.” Albus loved his father dearly, but constantly being reminded how similar they were became quite wearing to an eleven year old attempting to achieve individuality. “My name is Albus. But most people just call me Al.”
Scorpius nodded for a second. It seemed as if introducing himself in return would end the only interaction he had had in about 2 hours. Apprehensively he replied “I’m Scorpius Malfoy. Um, people call me Scorpius…” Realizing this was not the most intelligent statement he had ever made, Scorpius looked at Albus awaiting rejection. Instead Albus allowed a smile to slip onto his face which the blond returned with a tentative one of his own. Instantly, with one simple smile, the tension began to resolve in the compartment.
“What house do you think you will be in?” Albus asked, happy now that the air was lighter.
Scorpius visibly relaxed as the new ease of conversation and replied, “Well I know everyone expects me to be in Slytherin,” he paused as if attempting to choose his next omission carefully “but I’m afraid of a lot of the people in that house because of um, yeah…” Albus did not need to hear the end of the statement. He was aware that several children of ex-death eaters were in Slytherin house, their families being sold out to the ministry by Lucius Malfoy in exchange for a shorter stay in Azkaban. Albus simply nodded to him in understanding.
“My brother keeps telling me that I’m going to be in Slytherin.” At this statement Scorpius eyes went wide with fear. “But I don’t want to be at all. I’m not sure if I’m cut out for Gryffindor though either, so I guess I want either Ravenclaw or Huffelpuff… preferably Ravenclaw.” He added and both boys had a short laugh.
A knock at the door interrupted the conversation. James stood outside the compartment. “Al, time to get dressed! We are going to be there in like five…” he cut off suddenly as he realized who was sitting across from his younger brother.
“James. Uh this is Scorpius.” Albus hastily interjected. “We were just talking about what houses we think we are going to get sorted into.”
“Is that so?” James asked looking at Scorpius with a face of disgust. “Well I doubt there was much to discuss. Everyone knows Malfoys belong in Slytherin.” A look of pure shock overtook Scorpius’ face.
Albus wanted to reprimand his brother for what he had said, but all he could manage before being pulled out if the compartment was a rushed “See you at Hogwarts Scorpius!”
As the brothers neared the original compartment, James suddenly stopped and turned to face Albus. “What did you think you were doing? Being alone in a compartment like that with the son of a Death Eater?” He exclaimed, going red in the face.
“Talking James! I was just talking to him!”
“Well maybe next time you can talk to the son of someone who did not take part in attempting to destroy the entire wearing world!”
“Well maybe you…” Albus began. But before he could complete the argument with his brother a set of robes was being thrown at him. As he changed the only thing he could think about was the horror on Scorpius’ face after what James had said. All of Albus’ anxiety over being sorted had disappeared, only to be replaced with concern for Scorpius.

“RAVENCLAW!” The entire Great Hall went silent. For the first time in history, a Malfoy was sorted into a house other than Slytherin. But soon enough applause broke out from all corners of the hall and Scorpius, with a large smile, took his seat at the Ravenclaw table.
About five sortings after Scorpius, Albus approached the Sorting Hat. Sweaty palms and racing heart he sat upon the old stool. “Not Gryffindor? Not Slytherin? Not Huffelpuff? Well then I guess its RAVENCLAW!”
Heaving a sigh of relief, Albus sat down next to Scorpius who greeted him with a smile. “Definitely better than Slytherin.”
