Prologue
This summer was no different than usual. Ron was at the dinner table eating like it was his last meal. Of course Ginny and his mother kept giving him the look that meant ‘stop shoving food in your mouth like a pig, Ron’. He just didn’t understand why women were so obsessed with his eating habits, Merlin’s balls, he had a high metabolism. He was quite enjoying the dumplings his mother had made when there was a knock at the door. “Ginny dear, could you get that, please” his mother said from her place over the sink. Ginny pushed back her chair as Ron shoveled another bite into his mouth.
“What are you doing here?” Ginny’s voice sounded from the front door. Ron lowered his next bite, and stopped chewing as a low heated conversation followed. Ginny’s red haired temper flamed through, and an equally volatile temper seemed to answer back in a familiar tone.
“Mum and Dad don’t want to speak you, Percy. Besides, why would you want to talk to them? Aren’t we all just a bunch of blood traitors?”
Ron could picture his sister’s face as she spoke, and he nodded along with her. Percy deserved what he got, but apparently his Mum did not quite agree.
“Ginny! Let your brother in immediately!”
Percy strutted into the kitchen, nodding to Bill and Charlie while Ginny followed behind looking murderous. “It seems the whole family was invited.” Percy said with obvious disappointment as he looked around the kitchen.
Molly’s eyes softened, “Sweetheart, you know all you children are welcome here at anytime.”
“Well, you at least are as welcome as any Malfoy would be,” Ron replied taking another bite and chewing triumphantly.
Percy’s eyes narrowed, “I’ll have you know the Malfoy’s are fine, upstanding members of society and they, at least, contribute to the prosperity of the ministry.”
“Morgana’s tits, Percy, have you been imperioed?! Lucius Malfoy is a known Deatheater, and Narcissa is at the very least a supporter of You-Know-Who. How can you defend them?” Charlie exclaimed as he almost choked on his tea.
“I can defend them because they deserve defending. Why can none of you see that?”
Ron threw down his fork in disgust. “He gave Ginny that bloody fucking diary you snake loving twat! Your own sister almost died because of the Malfoys! Your own flesh and blood!” Ron pushed back from the table, his chair slamming into the wall behind him.
Percy seemed unphased by Ron’s outburst, “Perhaps in a couple of years you will see the honor in the Malfoy family. They simply –“
“That is quite enough! Both of you! Ronald Weasley, room, now! Ginny, you too.” Molly said from her spot at the sink, soap dripping from her fingertips as she pointed the way for them.
Ron opened his mouth to object. “You, young man, have said quite enough, ROOM, GO! And Ginny, dear, I’m sorry you are too young to hear what I’m about to say.”
“I’m 16, Mum. I already know what things like cunt bastard and traitorous rat mean.” Ginny said with a smirk worthy of any Slytherin as she glared at Percy.
“ROOMS!” Molly screamed. Ginny and Ron gave their brother one last look and did as they were told.
---------------------------------
Ron woke up knowing something was off. The usual loud bustle of the house was not in attendance. He lay in bed basking in the sunlight streaming through the window and frowning in the unusual silence. Where were the sounds of his Mum’s familiar screech, his father’s low mumble and the crackling of the morning paper? He slid out of bed and padded towards the loo.
He took a quick look at himself in the mirror, and winced. His eyes were puffy from too much sleep, and his freckles stood out brightly against his pale skin. Quickly he looked away, grabbing for his toothbrush and toothpaste, and then shoved the brush in his mouth. He was just starting to really clean his teeth good, spitting out the toothpaste when he froze.
Ginny let out a blood curtling scream.
Rom immediately dropped his toothbrush into the sink, not even taking the time to turn off the tap. He threw open the bathroom door, and dashed down the stairs, taking them three at a time. He landed in the kitchen with all the force of a full jump from the last three steps, and instead of coming to a jolting stop, found himself sliding straight across the floor.
“What the –“He yelled in panic, arms waving as he attempted to get some balance. His feet skidded across the floor. He was halfway across the kitchen; his socks soaked, and tumbled right through the swinging door into the dining room before he slammed into the end of the dining room table.
“Gin what is going on…” Ron wheezed, but he did not finish his thought as he crashed to the ground and pulled the tablecloth down with him as he collapsed on the floor.
Like a slow motion movie, everything that had been set on the dining room table came tumbling down around him. Glasses shattered on the floor, resounding bangs and tings from china and silver slamming into the wood floors made his ears ring. However, it was the head that rolled right past his hand, to land just an inch from his fingers that made his head swim.
Large brown eyes, once that had been full of light and laughter, now stared up at him with a startled gaze. Familiar red hair fanned around the rounded features of his mother’s face.
Ron felt himself take a deep breath and a sound somewhere between a scream and a desperate plea for help made its way into the room. “Mum?” he questioned, his brain still trying to wrap itself around what he was looking at. He lifted trembling fingers to the curve of her blood swiped cheek and as he felt the thick congealing substance on his fingers, the utter horror of it all washed over him.
Ron scuttled backwards across the blood covered floor in a whirlwind of motion. His back slammed into the wall, but he still could not break the gaze of his mum’s dead eyes. He tried to pull his hands up to his face, perhaps to cover his eyes, but hissed when something wet met his face. He pulled his hands away, and glanced at them, finally realizing just what covered the floor.
There was blood everywhere. He had made a long streak when he flew into the room, but the rest of the floor was covered so that you could not make out the patterns of the wood floors. So much blood. It was the only thought that ran through his head. How could there possibly be so much blood?
Amidst the broken china, glass, and silver platters were limbs. There were hands, and heads, and eyes, and fingers. There was so much carnage that he could not even tell what parts belonged to whom.
How long he sat there on that floor, he could not tell. It could have been hours or minutes, or even a lifetime. One minute he was staring into his mother’s eyes, and the next Ginny’s screams were making his head start to pulse.
His head shot up immediately, focusing in on his little sister. Ginny was backed against the wall, body flushed and pale enough to blend into the white walls. Her hands were up over her ears, and she was bent at the knees, her head thrown back as she wailed.
Ron knew instinctively he needed to get Ginny out of that room. There was something wrong about her screams, something that had his stomach churning and his heart beating erratically against his chest. He needed to squash it, to hold her and pull her out of this hell before any more damage was done.
Ron tried to push himself up off the ground, but his limbs suddenly grew heavy. A dark red haze filtered through the room, swirling up from the blood pools on the floor. It was growing hard to breathe, as if every inhale forced the mist into his body.
With what strength he mustered, he pushed himself off the wall and started to walk slowly across the room. The mist was growing thicker, almost as if the haze was growing into a solid wall that he had to push through. The closer he got to his sister, the harder he had to push.
“Ginny –“ He hissed, his voice thick from his own pain and the verge of suffocation. He reached out, grabbing one of her arms, and then yanked her as hard as he could into his chest.
Suddenly the room grew oppressively thick. His lungs filled with an indefinable pain that raced through his body as if he had been struck by a bolt of lightning. There was a rush in his ears, like waves crashing down on him and dragging him under the surf.
All went black.

“We have to go now, Ron,” Hermione said as she caressed his hand consolingly. Ron seemed impassive to everything except that simple touch. He nodded his head dully, and Hermione’s face looked stricken by his lack of emotion.
Harry stood by, watching from the door. He could see George and Fred hunched over either side of a prone Ginny, and hear their low uttered prayers for their younger sister to wake up.
He turned and signaled to his friends that the coast was clear, and they snuck out into the hall. The covered portrait of Sirius’ mother stayed blessedly silent as they tiptoed past and out into the warm summer night, leaving behind all they held dear.
