Chapter One: A Heart For the Heartless
The way her hair bounced when she walked. The soft curves of her lips when she smiled. The way she looked at him with doe-like eyes, still filled with the burning need for knowledge. These were the things that had Severus weak in the knees for one, Hermione Jean Granger, librarian of Hogwarts.
Severus had returned to Hogwarts after deciding he had no other purpose in life than to serve as the Potions Master. He had grown tiresome after three years since the war ended, doing absolutely nothing in his shabby house. He missed throwing out detentions to dim-witted and troubling children. He missed the smell of his labs. He missed teaching the ones who cared about Potions.
After sending in his request to fill the position of Potions Master, he received a quick reply thanking him and accepting his offer. He was welcomed back to the school with open arms, which he ignored, at the beginning of the year. He stopped dead in his tracks when he entered the castle that very first morning, seeing his old pupil with readers on and several books floating in a stack behind her.
“Welcome back, Professor.” She had greeted him warmly with one of those smiles and walked on to the library with the books following her.
“Thank you.” He said, not taking his eyes off her until she rounded the corner, disappearing from sight.
“You do recognize her, Severus?” McGonagall inquired, with a slight raise of her eyebrow. He nodded curtly.
“Grown up a bit.” He commented, more to himself than anyone else. McGonagall smirked behind him, amused.
Several weeks later, he had managed to fall in love with her, knowing full well that he was far too old for her, and she was, more likely than not, seeing that ginger haired twat.
Many a night, Severus had woken from a stiff member and needed to relieve himself. He ended up either taking his cock in hand, or turned over fucking the bed sheets, with one curly-haired know-it-all always in mind.
“Severus, are you all right?” Professor Longbottom leaned forward into Severus’s line of sight, blocking his view of Hermione, who had been eating a bowl of porridge and discussing who-knew-what with Professor Patil.
“My well being is my own business, Mr. Longbottom. Thanks for your concern.” He answered, annoyed that he could no longer see the lovely creature that his thoughts so often lingered on.
There were several screeches from above before Severus decided it was time to leave. The mail had arrived and he knew he would get nothing from anyone. He made one last glance to the Head table and felt a pang in his heart when he saw Hermione opening a pink envelope. Whatever she read made her blush considerably and when Patil snatched the card out of her hand, both of them were in a set of giggles.
Severus heaved a sigh of relief and made for the dungeons to prepare for his first class with the Ravenclaw and Gryffindor first years.
“Do you think he’ll finally ask you to go steady, Hermione?” Padma asked her friend, giddy with excitement. She was married, but her marriage’s flame had burned out almost as soon as it had started.
Hermione shrugged. “I don’t know. Ron knows how to beat around the bush better than anyone.” She chuckled. It had been three years. Each of their own love lives seemed to be in the media everywhere, but they kept going back to each other, for some reason or other. The papers always read of their quick romances between the relationships they had with separate people. They had never slept together, but they had their snogging sessions and dinners out.
This morning, it seemed as though Ron were once again single. She read the card, which was a quick hallmark saying how beautiful she was, and the note at the bottom read: “Three Broomsticks, 10 PM tonight.”
Hermione hadn’t been seeing anyone for a week, her latest romance with Dean Thomas fizzled out. He had begun to get far too jealous, making wild accusation about her and Snape. They didn’t even spend much time together, except when he gave her late night lessons on Potions or the Dark Arts, which they didn’t practice. Those lessons only happened once or twice a month, and even through it all, the potions master seemed very distant, almost going out of his way so they wouldn’t touch.
It took all of Hermione’s will power not to daydream while she reshelved books and placed orders for replacements. She was far too excited that she got to see Ron to even concentrate.
Finally she had an hour to get ready and get to the Three Broomsticks. She dressed herself in a short, red halter dress, which shaped her torso to resemble a heart. She didn’t bother with too much make-up, figuring Ron would just snog it all away. She threw her hair up in a messy bun, allowing a few strands to rest on the sides of her face.
With one last satisfying glance in the mirror, she set off. It didn’t take long, it seemed, to reach the pub. When she walked in, she checked her watch. She was five minutes early. She looked across the room until her eyes fell on a ginger-haired man sitting on one of the barstools.
“If it isn’t the famous Quidditch player, himself.” Hermione said, walking right up behind him. He turned around and hopped off the barstool, throwing his arms around her.
“Hermione! It’s been too long.” He held her for much longer than necessary, but she didn’t protest. Finally, he let go, but slid his hands down her arms until he held both of her hands in his own.
“How’ve you been, Ron?” She asked him, her smile broad and bright.
“Much better now.” He smiled back at her and finally let go of her hands, gesturing to the barstool next to him. She hopped on with ease.
“I saw you got into a bit of a fight the last match.” Hermione tried her best not to seem smug, but she was certain she was the reason behind the fight. The player in question that he attacked was none other than Viktor Krum, one of Hermione’s old boyfriends. Although Ron was more frequent, Viktor was another man who was often in Hermione’s life.
Ron’s ears turned red at the subtle confrontation. “Water under the bridge.” He shrugged. It was clear to Hermione that he didn’t want to get into it. “How’ve you been, babe? Dean told me about the split. Were you really fucking Snape behind his back?”
Hermione groaned at the accusation. “God, no. We hardly cross paths.” Hermione thought about asking Severus to dinner on several occasions, but he didn’t seem like a safe choice at all. As handsome and intellectually stimulating as he definitely was, there was no way Hermione could handle an inevitable break-up with someone she would have to see every day. No, Hermione decided she would admire him from afar, and fantasize about him sparingly.
Ron shook his head. “I thought it might be a case of jealousy. He can be a bit like a girl, in that respect.” Ron said. Hermione rose an eyebrow at him.
“How do you figure?”
“You know, insanely jealous, without reason.” Ron lifted his drink to his lips before speaking again. “You’re sort of like a guy, if you think about it.”
“Erm… what?” Hermione tried her best not to look offended.
“Well, even with our past,” he took a moment to eye her chest, “neither of us gets jealous when we’re dating someone else.” Hermione scoffed.
“That’s probably because I’m rational and know that whatever we do together doesn’t really matter.” She took a sip of her butterbeer. “We aren’t together. Never were… all things considered.”
“I s’pose.” Ron shrugged. “Part of why I came here.” Hermione’s heart skipped a beat. Was he asking her out?
“Meaning?” She tried hard not to let her voice waver.
“Meaning…” Ron said, looking back at her, beer hand. “I want you.” He eyed her up and down. Did he just mean sex, or something more? Hermione didn’t want to look like a fool and ask, and even if it were just sex, she could handle it. She had been with men before.
Hermione went through the pros and cons, the only con being that she was completely and totally uncertain of his intentions for afterward.
“Come on.” Hermione said finally, taking Ron’s hand in hers and making for the door. He grabbed his coat off the seat without complaint. Whatever happened tonight, Hermione was determined to make it the best night he would ever have.
- I hope you enjoyed! Don't worry, our Severus and Hermione are bound to end up together... there were freaking made for each other (in my opinion)... Don't be shy, leave a note!
