Hi everyone! This is my first time writing a Harry Potter fanfic. I'm not entirely certain how it will turn out but I hope you all enjoy it. I welcome suggestions and comments but please don't flame because it won't change anything anyway. I'm writing this story purely for my own enjoyment and I'm posting it with the simple hope that someone else might be able to get someone enjoyment out of it as well.
A couple of cautions: this story is SLASH, though not right away. The story will probably move fairly slowly and I'm still not completely decided on a pairing yet. Remus and Harry will be the main characters of the story but I'm not sure yet if they will turn out to be a pairing or if Harry will be with someone else. Suggestions on that front are welcome. Also, this story ignores everything that happens after book 5, though it assumes canon up until then. I took the liberty of making up some spells as well, based on latin words, for the benefit of my story. The first one you will see is in this chapter: 'tempore percurrere' which literally means 'travel through time'. If you see any more made-up spells in future chapters the definition of them will be found either at the beginning or end of each chapter. Now, on with the story!

Chapter 1: Written in the Stars
Harry Potter knew that most, if not all, of the ancient tomes in the Black private library were full of dark magic. Indeed, this was the reason that Sirius had locked up the library with a rather strong spell the first time that his godson had come to visit. It's not that he hadn't trusted Harry, it was more for his own peace of mind. After all, how delighted would James and Lilly have been if their son became enamored of dark magic simply because he had lacked the foresight to lock up the old library. So he had and the library remained locked to this day, Sirius' untimely death in the Ministry of Magic not withstanding.
Why Harry now found himself standing uneasily in front of those very same library doors is a question he kept asking himself, only to continually remind himself of the answer. An answer he liked less and less every passing minute. He shifted from one foot to the other in nervousness and glared at the offending double doors that led to the library. He had decided that this must be done for more reasons than he could list. Ever since the events of the previous school year and the death of his godfather he had realized how little he knew of dark magic and indeed, how little he knew of light magic. Watching Dumbledore and Voldemort duel had been a definite eye opener. He realized at that moment that in order to fight such an enemy he needed to understand how said enemy thought and what were the spells at his command. However it only helped a little bit to remind himself of why he wanted into the library. He was still rather frightened of the thought. What if the old Black family had cursed the entire library with something unmentionable? This was his main concern, though his second was the fear that he might become contaminated by dark magic simply from stepping through the doors.
He squared his shoulders and gave the wooden doors a determined look as if they would simply open under the steady gaze of his emerald eyes or because he willed it so. Of course, nothing happened. He heaved a sigh and reluctantly pulled out his wand from inside the pocket of his jeans and pointed it at the doors. "Alohomora," he commanded and sighed again when nothing happened. He really hadn't been expecting it to be that easy but one can always hope, no? He thought a little more and then raised his wand again. "Finite Incantatem!" He commanded. Well, he really hadn't expected that one to work either. Growling slightly under his breath he began aiming a steady stream of spells at the doors, hoping against hope that one of them would do the trick and allow him entrance to the mysterious dark library. However nothing seemed to be working. He cocked his head to the side as he took a small breather. Thinking hard he ran his hands through his unruly black hair. Something had to work and he would figure it out. Suddenly his eyes lit up and he straightened himself. If the spell used was only on the doors then maybe, just maybe the spell he had just thought of would work. With a deep breath he whispered, "Evanesco" and pointed his wand directly at the doors. To his eternal astonishment (and later to his eternal regret) the doors vanished with a small 'poof' sound and he was left staring in shock at the dark interior of the Black private library.
All he could think of as he stared into the dismal looking room was that Sirius must have been having an off day when he used a spell that could be canceled with a simple 'evanesco' to ward the library shut. Slowly he took a step towards the room and when nothing immediately happened to him he chanced another step and yet another until he was standing just inside the doorway of the library. He held his breath then, just waiting for something to pop out of some dark corner or creep from the top of some dusty shelf to devour him. He peered carefully about at all the shelves lining the walls of the small room and closely eyed the books packed tightly on the shelves for anything moving. After a few moments of nothing happening he let out the breath he had been holding in a whoosh. His rapidly beating hard slowly began pacing itself to a more normal rhythm and Harry decided that the library was relatively safe and so started forwards to explore a little.
An hour later found Harry sitting at the only table in the dark and dusty library, pouring over several large tomes bound in old, dry leather that looked as if they had been on the shelves in this silent place for centuries. And well they might have for all Harry knew. All he cared about at the moment was that they were certainly helping him gain an insight into the black magic that Voldemort and his death eaters were so fond of. He skipped over most of the rituals since they all seemed to involve a lot of blood and torture and for some reason, the sacrifice of virgins, which last piece of information made Harry shiver and glance over his shoulder. The thought fleetingly passed through his head that he really ought to rectify his status as a virgin before he ended up as one of these sacrifices. He shook his head to rid himself of that horrible thought and plowed through to the spells that didn't require ritual sacrifice and tried to absorb the theory behind them.
Several hours later he stood up and stretched. He was hungry and tired and his eyes hurt from reading in such poor lighting. He glanced nervously back to the void where the doors should have been and seriously hoped that Remus would never think to enter this part of the building. Thinking of Remus made him quickly realize that he had been in the library a long time and that Remus was likely to be arriving back soon, if he wasn't back already. Panicking, Harry snatched up the smaller book he'd been reading out of a moment before and dashed out of the quiet little library, intent on being in a completely different part of the house before Remus decided to come looking for him.
Harry was very thankful to Remus and his insistence to Dumbledore that Harry was much better off staying in number twelve Grimmauld Place with him than going back to the Dursley's house where no one would understand or care about all he had been through. Remus had really won the argument when he had brought into question the strength of the blood wards around said house now that Voldemort had Harry's blood flowing through his veins. Dumbledore had only gotten away with leaving Harry at the Dursley's the previous year because no one had been in a safe enough position to take him in and living in a muggle town had been safer than living in the magical community with no one to watch out for him. Now however, things were different. Remus was planning on staying put for the most part to watch over Harry in the old Black house that Sirius had bequeathed to the two of them in his will. So now they were living together in the large, old townhouse. They both had similar temperaments and therefore living together was no chore at all. Somehow Kreacher, the ancient house elf, had decided that he would actually accept (albeit grudgingly) Harry Potter as his new master and so every morning they woke up to the delicious smell of breakfast. Why Kreacher had suddenly decided to become domestic and actually do anything at all for Harry was a mystery that neither he nor Remus could puzzle out, so they just shrugged in amazement and jotted it down to Harry's exceedingly good luck.
Harry took a flying leap the moment he was through his bedroom door and landed with a thump on his bed. Quickly stuffing the book under his pillows he flipped over and lay panting on his back, trying to calm both his heart rate and his breathing even as he heard the sudden roar of the fire from downstairs that indicated that Remus had arrived back home. He shut his eyes tight for a moment, willing himself to calm down, and then slowly picked himself up off the bed and headed downstairs to greet Remus like he always did when Remus came back home after being out for awhile.
He poked his head into the kitchen to see Remus reaching for a cup in the cabinet, filling it with water from the tap and then draining it in one go. Harry waited till Remus had placed the cup back on the counter and then spoke up in a quiet voice, "Welcome back Remus. Did everything go okay?"
Remus turned around slowly and leaned back on the kitchen counter before he spoke, hazel eyes resting on Harry fondly, "Hello Harry, and yes everything went well. I trust you had a good day while I was gone?" He spoke warmly and this was one of the reasons that Harry always felt safe and happy around Remus.
Harry smiled brightly, "Yes, I had a very good day actually. I did a lot of reading... and stuff..." Here he trailed off vaguely hoping Remus wouldn't ask what he was reading that kept his attention nearly all day. He wasn't quite ready to let Remus know what he was doing yet. He would share that information at a later date, but not until he was sure that he had learned enough that he would be fine if Remus panicked and locked the library up again with a better spell than Sirius had used.
His wish was granted when Remus merely raised an eyebrow at the reading remark and said, "Well, I'm happy to see you applying yourself to your studies, even over the summer holidays." He smiled warmly at Harry and pushed himself off the counter with a fluid grace that Harry had come to associate only with Remus over the past few weeks. The man seemed healthier, brighter, and more at ease with others and himself since he and Harry had begun living together. Apparently this all translated into Remus becoming the most smoothly graceful and instinctive person that Harry had ever met. It intrigued Harry but he really didn't think about it much because whenever he was around Remus he just felt so content that analyzing the way Remus moved seemed silly and arbitrary.
Harry looked up as Remus stopped in front of him. He smiled as the older man's tawny hair fell into his hazel eyes while he gazed down at the boy. Harry pulled himself up a little taller. Somehow he always wished he was taller when he was around Remus. He didn't want the man to see him as a little boy. He was, after all, turning sixteen soon. Alas, no matter how tall Harry tried to stand he was always a good bit shorter than Remus. Remus just smiled as he watched Harry's attempt to gain height and he reached out a rough hand and brushed some loose hair back from Harry's eyes and said softly, "Let's go play some chess or exploding snap or something. It's been a long day and I'm not up to doing any training tonight. Is that alright with you Harry?"
Harry blushed lightly at this display of affection, nodded his head and said, "Yeah that's fine. I'm pretty beat myself. I think I concentrated too hard today." He grumbled the last part, flexing his shoulders a little in a show of getting the kinks out.
Remus threw his head back and laughed his hearty, rich laugh at that. "Only you could get tired from simply reading, Harry." He grinned, stifling his last few chuckles.
Harry glared at him for a moment and then pretended to pout as he turned on his heel and headed off for the sitting room, Remus trailing along behind him with a grin still on his face.
That evening ended early for both of them when after one game of exploding snap, a break for dinner, and then a long game of wizard's chess neither one could keep his eyes open anymore. So they said their goodnights and headed off to their respective bedrooms.
Once Harry had finished his nighttime routine and climbed into bed he fished out the little book that was still under his pillows and using 'lumos' he opened back to where he had left off and started reading again. He was getting really sleepy but he was too intrigued about this particular section in the book to put it down just yet. He fought off his fatigue valiantly and continued to read about this apparently rather dangerous spell.
Though the 'tempore percurrere' spell was created to allow one to travel back in time, there is much debate over whether the spell is truly effective or not. The reason for this being that every individual to have ever cast this spell has disappeared never to be seen or heard from again. The spell has been placed on the list of forbidden (and therefore dark) magic for this very reason. Most spell developers have theorized that the spell most likely does exactly what it was created for, however there is no known way to travel into the future and therefore once the unfortunate individuals have landed in the past they have no means to travel back to the future, therefore promoting the belief that they simply vanished into thin air.
Harry looked up thoughtfully and wondered, did those people who tried the spell actually make it into the past? It would be interesting to find out. He glanced back down at the page and read about the theory of the spell and the wand work behind it before looking up from the book and doing what he had done with all the other spells he had read about today. He moved his wand in the way described in the book and called out "tempore percurrere" while thinking about a specific time. He didn't want anything horrible to happen to him so he simply thought about earlier in the day when he had been reading in the old library. Apparently all the other people who had tried the spell were trying to go back to the time before they were born or while they were still young or even farther back than that. So Harry was reasonably certain that if he thought about a time only a few hours ago then he wouldn't disappear forever.
Unfortunately it seemed that even though he had good luck that always rescued him from a bad situation, that luck was never there when he was getting into the bad situation in the first place. And he seemed to end up in those situations disturbingly often. It was as if the fates had predetermined every moment of his life. This time looked to be no different than the ones preceding it as right as he finished the incantation Remus appeared in the open doorway of his bedroom with a sleepy and puzzled expression on his face. Harry's eyes opened wide and he lost all concentration as his gaze fell upon Remus. The two stared at each other in shock as their whole weird seemed to tilt strangely to the right and then flip over completely, plunging them both into blackness so deep they couldn't even see their own fingers in front of their faces. Harry tried to scream but nothing came out. He didn't even know if Remus was there with him and he fervently hoped that his old professor hadn't been caught up in this spell-gone-wrong. He shut his eyes tightly and curled into a ball as he felt himself falling endlessly through inky blackness.
