Chapter One: Christmas in the Park
It was Christmas Eve. Severus pulled his threadbare coat tighter, sticking his hands under his arms to keep them warm, as he walked down the deserted street. The sky was rapidly darkening with the setting sun, though the street lamps had yet to turn on. Above him, the steely grey clouds were threatening snow.
The streets were illuminated by patches of warm light spilling from the windows. Windows that showed all too clearly the Christmas Severus had never had: Christmas trees dazzling with lights, small children in their Christmas best enjoying their presents, parents laughing over glasses of hot spiced cider. Scowling, Severus kicked a chunk of ice as he walked on.
Veering off the road, away from the sounds of laughter and carols, Severus made his way into Spinner’s End Playground just as the street lamps came on. It was freezing but Severus had nowhere else to go. His father was in one of his rages, the tenderness in his jaw a testament, and he hoped that, with any luck, if he stayed away long enough, his father would be asleep before he got home.
Making his way towards the swings, Severus stopped short, his heart beating wildly in his chest. There, her vivid red hair illuminated by the street lamps, was Lily Evans.
“Lily, what are you doing here?” Severus asked, shocked to find her out here alone on Christmas Eve.
“Merry Christmas to you too,” she replied with a sad smile.
Severus plopped down on the swing next to her. “What are you doing here?” he repeated, worry furrowing his brow.
“Sev?” Lily started hesitantly.
“Yeah”
“Do you – do you think that I’m... normal?”
“Do I think that you’re normal? What’s that supposed to mean? Did your sister say something? Because she’s just a stupid muggle, and – ”
“No.” Lily cut in, “No it’s not something my sister said. Well, it is something she said, but I don’t mean normal like that. I mean normal, like normal for a girl.”
Severus’ heart skipped a beat. In truth, Severus didn’t think that Lily was normal for a girl. She was so much more than normal; she was perfect. Lily Evans was perfection, but he couldn’t exactly tell her that.
“Normal for a girl,” he mouthed, confusion on his face. “Lily, I don’t know what you’re talking about. And who cares about being normal anyway?”
“I care Sev!” she cried, sighing in exasperation and rising from the swing to pace in front of him.
Severus fidgeted in his seat. He wasn’t sure what Lily was trying to get at, but her agitation was making him uncomfortable.
“Can I ask you a question?” Lily asked, stopping her pacing to stand in front of him, wringing her hands.
“Sure...” he replied hesitantly.
“Have you... ever... snogged anyone?” she asked, her face flushing to match her hair.
His jaw dropped. “Have I ever snogged someone!? Why? Have you snogged someone!?” he asked, practically shouting at her and dreading the answer. His face was burning, though he wasn't sure if it was from anger or embarrassment.
“No,” she whispered, dropping back onto the swing and averting her eyes from his. Next to her Severus flooded with relief, his heart swelling with happiness as he fought to keep a small smirk off his lips.
“Everyone I know has, all the girls at school,” she continued. “And now Petunia has a boyfriend. He came over to give her her Christmas present this afternoon and I caught them, you know, snogging in our room. She saw and just stood there, like she was daring me to say something. I tried to talk to her later, when we were getting ready for my grandmother’s, but you know how she is. She said that just because I hadn’t snogged anyone didn’t mean that I had any right to nose into her business and that maybe if I wasn’t such a freak – ”
“You are not a freak Lily,” he interrupted harshly. “She’s just jealous. She's happy to have something you don’t for once.”
“I know that. I do," she said, sounding like she was trying to convince herself. "But Sev, I feel like a freak. I mean, I’m going to be sixteen in almost a month and I’ve never even kissed anyone,” she said, her desperation overpowering her embarrassment.
Severus sat still beside her for a moment, looking at his feet and listening to the silence of the snow that had just begun to fall. Night had fallen fast and he was grateful for the cover of darkness as he turned in the swing and looked up at her.
“You’re not a freak,” he said quietly. “Someone would snog you Lily. I mean, look at Potter, he’d do anything for the chance – not that I think you should go off and snog that brainless oaf,” he added quickly. “Just because you haven’t kissed anyone doesn’t mean that you couldn’t if you wanted to. Who cares about Petunia? And besides, I’ve seen that friend of yours Becky with Connor Hayes. He looked more like he was trying to eat her than snog her. I don’t think you’re missing out on much.”
Lily giggled softly, turning in the swing so that their knees bumped together. Perhaps it was because she was looking particularly beautiful flushed with cold, snow in her hair, or because of their conversation, but Severus was suddenly very aware of her lips: their perfect curve, the small freckle on the upper-left side. As if seeking to draw his attention further, her pink tongue kept darting out to moisten them against the dry winter air. Never in his life had he wanted to kiss her more, and he had wanted to since the moment he saw her, a small girl in a green dress playing on the swings with her sister. Instead he reached out with a shaking hand to push a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Aren’t you going to be late for your grandmother’s?” he managed to croak out.
“Oh, they’ve already left. I told them I didn’t feel well and to go on without me. I couldn’t stand looking at Petunia’s smug face all night.”
“You’re alone on Christmas?”
“No, they’ll be back late tonight. And I’m not alone; I’m with you. Come on,” she said rising from the swing and holding out a mittened hand. “It’s freezing out here. Let’s spend the night eating Christmas cookies and watching the television specials.”
