Kabel’s hand shook as he read his step-mother’s letter.
His father had been in his mid-teens when he had fallen pregnant with him. He then later married Kabel’s step-mother at the age of eighteen and they both had moved in with his father on his ranch after his mother had died, whom had kicked him out when he had gotten pregnant.
So for nineteen years Kabel had learned how to look after the ranch and its animals. He'd learned how to ride and had competed along side his father in the rodeo since he was twelve.
But the mysterious thing about Kabel, his father and grandfather was that they were magical human beings, warlocks to be precise, which is how men could get pregnant. They could do all sorts of spells and such but rarely used it as they did not want to rely on it as many of their kind liked too.
Now just a few weeks ago after Kabel’s nineteenth birthday his step-mother had died suddenly. It was hard blow for the family, and now the letter she had sent him already told him what his father had told him years before.
He knew he had a half brother somewhere in England, who turned out to be Harry Potter, the boy wonder, though Kabel could care less about titles. However his step-mother wrote that she would like him to knock his father over the head and convince them to go and see the boy. Harry, who had just finished his fifth year, and whom had defeated the dark lord that plagued most of Europe, with some of his friends and some order or another. Maybe Kabel could even ask him to spend the summer there.
“What do you think old men? Should we travel half way around the world and see the boy who has never even heard of us?” Kabel tossed the letter onto the table and ran his hands through his shaggy brown hair.
John, his grandfather, picked up the letter and read through it again. “It might be interesting to have the kid around.” He shrugged his shoulders.
“That is if the kid would even want to know us,” Derrick, or Rick as he likes to be called, stood up from the kitchen table and walked over to the window over the sink, and looked out to see some of the stable hands returning some of the horses from the field to the stable for a quick groom and lunch. A couple of the dogs were at their heels hoping they to might get a rub down and a snack.
Being reminded of the guy he had fallen in love with as a young teen when he'd gone to visit his great great uncle at Hogwarts hurt. Especially now that he could never see him and now that he had a child with someone else.
“Maybe this will help with the pain dad,” Kabel got up and placed a hand on his father’s shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze.
Rick gave a small smile. “Maybe.” He turned his attention back to the window.
“That settles it then, you and Kabel will go to England by the end of the week.” John stood and stretched, his joints popping.
Rick and Kabel both turned to John and raided an eyebrow.
“Now don’t be giving me any of that. I think it would be good for ya to get away for a little while. I can take care of the ranch, as I still own it and have been looking after it for the past twenty years.” John gave a grin before walking out of the back kitchen door.
“Should we let the old man run free of the ranch?” Kabel asked as both him and Rick followed John out the door and stood on the porch, watching as John talked to one of the horse handlers.
Their ranch was a bit unique, specializing in training and rehabilitating abused horses as well as other animals. They even had a young panther that they had rescued from a traveling circus, and they did not limit themselves to non-magical animals. They kept the magical animals out in the trees and forest brush to be hidden from the non magical folk.
“I don’t know if I trust him, next we’ll have Satyrs running around.” Rick placed his tan hat on his head before stepping off the porch to start the afternoon sessions with some of the in town kids whose parents had paid for them to take riding lessons. Kabel followed reluctantly, as he always dreaded these lessons for one reason only.
And speaking of that reason. Here came the terror now.
“Kabel!” As soon as he stepped into the fenced paddock his arm was latched onto. It was the captain of the local highschool cheerleaders, named Clarissa. She was sought after by all the guys at the school and was the most popular girl there. Kabel admitted that she was pretty. She had perfect white teeth, and a body to die for. But thats all she had going for her. She thought that the world revolved around her. He shuddered every time she was near, mentioned or thought of. Though the thought of her barley entered his mind.
“Clarissa, let go of me please.” Kabel shook his arm and gave a fake smile. She grinned but complied, only because she thought that he was actually interested in her. Kabel was not interested in her, or any other female for that matter, but no one but his dad and grand father know about it.
The week dragged as they got everything together. They had to hire five extra handlers for the week as Kabel and Rick would both be leaving and had to talk to the local animal rescues that they would be away a week and to see to it that if they could not find suitable housing for the animals until they get back, John would handle everything. It was not like John couldn’t do squat and that he was to old and would break at the simplest thing. That was not true, not at all. It was just that Kabel and Rick both worried over him, especially since he'd lost his wife, even though she had kicked Rick out, he had still loved her dearly, and it had taken its toll on him. And they were afraid, as anyone would. Especially since John was only 52, still young by wizard standards.
“Alright, you got the numbers of our cell phones? The addresses and floo codes for where we’ll be staying?” Rick asked as Kabel placed their three bags into the back seat of the pick-up truck. John rolled his eyes.
“For gods sake child. Yes, you’re like some mother hen. But I’m the parent.” John nudged his son towards the truck where his grandson was trying to hide his grin. Rick gave a playful glare before he hugged his father.
“We’ll see you in a week old man,” Kabel called as he opened the driver’s door and climbed in. Rick gave a last wave goodbye and got in the truck. John watched as they drove off.
The flight over to England had been long. When they arrived they walked to the barrier between the air port and the floo. International flooing from the States to England was a bit rough, so most wizards flew in and then took the floo to their final destinations.
They both waited for the floo and wearily watched as aurors patrolled the lines. It seemed that even after the defeat of Voldemort, they still kept a tight security, and that there were suspicions that there were still rogue death eaters running around causing trouble.
Finally it was their turn after an hour of questions, and odd looks from everyone.
With their bags in their hands they swirled through the network until it spat them out. Well more like Rick gracefully stepped out while Kabel went tumbling and landed dazed on his back staring up at a dark ceiling. He heard a snicker, that clearly was not his father, and sat up and looked around the room they had landed in.
The room itself was large and filled with books. It looked like a library. And then the snickering came from over in the corner where four teens were working on what looked to be summer homework.
Kabel rolled his eyes and stood up, he brushed the soot off his jeans with his hat before placing it on his head. He looked over at his father who smirked.
“Jerk.” Kabel muttered and picked up his bags. Thats when the door to the library opened and in walked an old man looking like merlin, dressed in bright blue robes with silver stars. He smiled as he saw the two.
“Derrick, it so good to see you my boy,” The old man pulled Rick into a tight hug before turning to Kabel. “And you must be Kabel,” He too pulled Kabel into a hug.
“Yeah, who are you? You strange hugging man,” Kabel raised an eyebrow at the old man while taking a step towards his father. Who quickly slapped him upside the head.
“Don’t be rude. This is your Great great granduncle. Albus Dumbledore.” Rick gave him a small glare. Kabel just shrugged it off.
“Nice to meet you. But can you point me to a shower?” Rick was about to slap the boy again for his rudeness when Albus chuckled.
“Of course my boy, I would have the house elves take you to your rooms-” He was interrupted by a clearing throat. Everyone looked to the table in the corner where the four teens sat. One of them reminded Kabel of a beaver. She was the one who cleared her throat and was giving his uncle a pointed look.
“However, I’ve decided I’ll show you myself.” With that Albus lead the two men out of the library leaving only the teens behind.
