Hermione Granger usually didn't have trouble sleeping. She usually didn't toss and turn in her bed at night. She usually didn’t feel this strong need of revenge washing over her. She did not want to inflict pain on others. Usually.
But this, this was far from usual.
And she couldn’t explain it.
Nor cared to explain, for that matter.
As the slight shades of dawn started to creep among the darkness, she knew her sleep and blissful ignorance were far gone. So she rose out of bed, tiptoed out of her bedroom and started to make herself a cup of tea.
Not that she’d know why all this caution. It’s not like she had anyone to wake up.
Hermione Granger, at age of twenty-five, lived alone in a small flat in Muggle area of London. As successful as she was in her career, she did not find a significant other to share flat with. Although she had quite a few proposals, being a war hero and all that. And even had a steady boyfriend, Ron Weasley. Had, that is. As unfortunate as it was, they were no longer an item.
After a great deal of nagging from Molly, who also tried to force them to marry and produce a bunch of bushy red-haired babies, they broke up. As hard as that was for Hermione, Ron being her first and all that, she felt this wasn’t what she looked for and so they slowly fell apart.
Ron was obviously not very hurt. Well of course, he was sulking for first ten minutes, but soon found comfort in welcoming arms of one Lavender Brown.
After ridiculously long conversation on the matter, which lasted for about half an hour, and was probably the only civilized conversation they ever had, they decided it was time to move on. Not a very hard decision, after all, they’ve been friends for seven long years, so it was quite easy getting back into friend zone and forgetting all the intimate moments which usually ended in Ron falling asleep on top of her and snoring all night long.
As for her other best friend, Harry, he complied his role as a good son-in-law, married Ginny Weasley and the first Potter heir was already on the way. Lily if it’s a girl, and James if it’s a boy, they said. Hermione used to think about how long it took for them to come up with such original names.
So she was sitting on the balcony, sipping her tea and lighting her morning cigarette. Smoking was the nastiest habit she took as hers over the years, but no one could take this little happiness away from her, as unhealthy as it was. She didn’t want to live until some great age anyway, or reach an end like Dumbledore did. Well, it wasn’t because of his age, anyway.
Casting a quick Tempus spell she checked the time. Enough of time for a shower and a proper breakfast, she decided.
Said and done, she braced herself for another day at work. Walking out from her warded home, because, after all, one can never be too careful, she went to the nearest Apparition point and soon enough found herself at the Ministry of Magic entry.
After taking an elevator to the level four, Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, she walked straight to her office, greeted by her assistant and ex schoolmate, Padma Patil. Hermione greeted her with smile and she received a cup of her favorite coffee, lightly spiked with Irish cream liqueur.
Sitting at her desk and seeing all of new paperwork on the table, she set to work with a small sigh. Not to be misunderstood, Hermione loved her work. It was her dreams coming true, she taught people on how to treat magical creatures, especially freeing house-elves. Brave Dobby was her first and most vigorous inspiration for that. And of course, her school organization, S.P.E.W.
More and more people supported her, yet there were still some of them who opposed her greatly. Checking her schedule, she remembered she had a meeting with one of those people today, wondering briefly who they would send this time.
Stiffening her yawn with her hand, she continued with boring paperwork. On and on and on it went, not coming to a stop. A quick glance towards the clock on her desk told her she was working on it for the past three hours. Standing up and pulling her cloak around her shoulders, she exited the office.
“Padma, what would you like for lunch? I figured I need to stretch my legs, so I’ll go today.” She said to her assistant.
“It’s okay, I’ve actually already had my lunch and was just about to get yours.” Padma smiled in return.
“Oh, okay then. I’ll be back soon.” And with that, Hermione went towards the exit of the building.
Once outside, she took a slow pace to the tiny but cozy bar at the end of the street. Sitting down outside to enjoy warm spring sun, she ordered a cup of tea and a croissant. While waiting for her order to arrive, she absentmindedly lighted a cigarette, watching with fascination the twists and swirls of silvery gray smoke.
Taking a bite of her croissant, she idly began to wonder who would be the person she had a meeting with.
Finishing her tea, lunch and few more cigarettes, she began to retreat back to her office.
Ten minutes into her work, Padma knocked and peeked inside.
“Hermione, your client has just arrived.”
“Alright, just send them in, please.”
Padma’s face disappeared and doors opened widely, revealing none other than one and only, Lucius Malfoy.
A/N: I just started writing this fanfic, the idea just kinda popped into my mind. It's a short chapter, but please let me know what do you think, and if I should continue or not. :)
