Chapter 1 - Outcast in Our Midst
“How does it feel
to be different from me
are we the same?”
- Avril Lavigne
As I passed through the barrier to platform 9 ¾, I casually looked around. The witches and wizards around me were openly staring, and purposely avoiding me.
Jeez, they act like they’ve never seen an American before. I smirked to myself. Then again, I’m not your typical American either. The clothes I wore were completely different from what these Londoners wore. Where most of the other girls had cute, trendy outfits, I wore a black muscle tank short enough to show off my well-developed abs and navel piercing and slightly baggy black bondage pants with all sorts of chains attached, and Bongo combat boots. My jewelry consisted of cuffs, chokers, and more chains. I couldn’t help but notice I had more piercings than anybody else too. Besides the small silver dragon in my navel, I had two holes in my right ear, both of which had small silver rings in them, and my left ear had one dangling silver earring in the shape of the human skeleton, complete with moveable joints. My brown hair was pulled back in a half pony, leaving the skeleton in plain view. To top it off, I had artificial fangs that looked like the real thing, and smokey eye shadow and liner emphasized my bright blue eyes, giving them an almost cat-like quality. My fingernails were long, filed into claws and painted black. It was enough to scare anyone off.
Looks like it’s gonna be another lonely year. Sighing to myself, I reached up and softly ruffled Skylar’s feathers.
That’s another thing that’s different. They all have owls or cats in cages, but my hawk sits free on my shoulder. We must make quite a sight.
As I took my trunk to an empty compartment, everyone gave me a wide berth, staring, some with fear, others with contempt. I sighed again and tried to load my heavy trunk into the compartment by myself. I almost had it when someone came up behind me.
“Hi. Need some help?”
I was quite startled, and lost my grip on the trunk. It came down hard on my foot, which hurt like hell, even through my heavy boots. I let out a stream of curses as I struggled to free my foot. A boy with dark hair and glasses hurried to help, freeing my foot. I turned around to see a girl with bushy brown hair stuttering an apology.
“I-I’m s-sorry. I didn’t m-mean to…” I cut her off, totally pissed.
“Don’t you ever sneak up on me again! You’re damned lucky I didn’t break my foot.”
Skylar, who had stayed on my shoulder throughout the whole ordeal, screeched menacingly at her. We must’ve scared the hell out of her, because she got real pale and ran to hide behind this tall red headed guy. The one with glasses cautiously laid a hand on my shoulder, attempting to calm me down.
“Was that really necessary? It was an accident, and she said she was sorry.” I looked at him, still slightly pissed.
“Well it hurt! Can you honestly blame me? Jeez, that thing was heavy enough to break something!.” Even as I said this, I knew I sounded lame. Judging by the expression on his face he thought so too. I sighed, and turned back to the girl, who was still hiding behind the red head.
“Sorry I took your head off. Just don’t do it again okay?” she didn’t reply, and she still looked badly shaken.
Wow. I must have really scared her.
I couldn’t help but feel a little concerned.
“Hey, you okay? Sorry I scared you so bad. I promise my bark’s worse than my bite.” She seemed to recover slightly, and came out of hiding.
“I’ll be alright. Sorry I caught you off guard.”
“It’s alright. I think you surprised me more than anything. Most people take one look at me and keep as far away as possible.”
“Well,” said the boy with glasses, “looks aren’t everything. What’s your name?”
“Shadow. What are yours?” the red head introduced them all after their initial pause at my name.
“I’m Ron Weasley, that’s Hermione Granger, and that bloke beside you is my best mate, Harry Potter.” I looked back at Harry, searching for the scar.
Ah, there it is. So this is the legendary Harry Potter.
He must have realized what I was looking for, because he started looking a bit uncomfortable.
“I guess you’ve heard of me.”
“Hah! Who hasn’t? Dude, whether you like it or not, you’re a major legend in the wizarding world. There’s not a witch or wizard alive who doesn’t know your name.”
He looked slightly distraught, groaning and running his fingers through his already messy hair as we settled in the compartment and the Hogwarts Express pulled out of the station.
“You’re not gonna treat me like some big celebrity are you?”
I laughed mirthlessly. “Not on your life, even if you wanted me to. I’m gonna treat you the same way I would anyone else. Prove yourself a friend, and I’ll laugh with you. Piss me off, and I’ll yell at you. Prove yourself an enemy, and I’ll hate you.” He looked surprised, and cocked a brow at me.
“That was poetic, yet…harsh.”
I chuckled and said “hey, I just tell it like I see it, blunt and to the point.”
“Yeah, that’s for sure,” said Ron. “I’d hate to make you hate me.”
“Yeah, that would not be a pretty sight,” I replied, half jokingly. “Especially if I was already in a bad mood.”
The three of them laughed with me, but I sensed a nervous edge to their laughter as they took special note of my fangs. Ron swallowed hard and attempted to hide his apprehensiveness, only making it more noticeable in the process.
“Heh heh, I wager you could account for a bloke or two with those things.”
Now, I have a slight mean streak, so just to freak them out I grinned devilishly, baring my fangs even more.
“Oh, I’ve accounted for more than a bloke or two…or three…or four…” with each number, I could sense their uneasiness increasing, until they glanced at each other with expressions bordering on fear. I laughed, startling them greatly.
“Aw jeez, if Londoners are this easy to creep out, I’m gonna have a ball at Hogwarts! I probably should’ve told ya’ll earlier, but I’ve got a bit of a mean streak, and I love to play with peoples’ minds like that.”
Hermione took a shaky breath, and her voice quivered when she asked,
“So you were only joking right?”
I stopped laughing, and seriously looked into the eyes of each one of them.
“I was actually quite serious, although the only time I physically harm anybody is when they give me a reason to.”
They shared another uneasy glance. I rolled my eyes, chuckling softly. The whistle blew, and we boarded the compartment. Skylar settled on my shoulder and tucked his head under his wing, seeming to sense this would be a long trip. The first half hour or so of the trip to Hogwarts was spent talking about America, then the conversation turned to life at Hogwarts. The trio were all in my year, the sixth, and enthusiastically told me about their enemies, friends, and housemates, and about how odd it was that uniforms weren’t required this year. At that time, we were joined by a boy they called Neville, one of the friends they had told me about. He paled considerably when he first looked at me, and when I tried out a friendly smile, he fainted dead away. Hermione hurried to his side, wand ready to revive him. Ron and Harry looked at me apologetically and shrugged.
“Sorry about that. I don’t know what’s wrong with him.”
Harry sounded so guilty, I couldn’t help but grin.
“Don’t worry. He’s not the first to react to my appearance in such a way.”
Harry was about to reply, when Neville came around. The poor guy unluckily saw me first thing, and fainted again.
“Er… I think maybe I should leave until you guys can explain that I wont kill him or anything…”
I stepped out of the compartment and slid the door closed. I stood there for a moment, trying to soothe a very irritated Skylar, who had been awakened by all the commotion. Then I remembered one name in particular, which had caught my interest. That of a boy named Draco Malfoy. Dragons had always intrigued me, so of course I was drawn to a name such as Draco. However, according to Harry, Ron, and Hermione Draco was a spoiled brat who relied fully upon his father’s reputation and wealth. They also said he was a bully and a coward, hiding behind two hulking lackeys by the names of Crabbe and Goyle.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I realize this may have been fully possible, as there are many people such as this in today’s world, muggle and wizard, but what ate at my mind was the fact that sometimes a person has more than one side. I had developed a strong sixth sense for this type of thing, and it urged me to investigate this boy for myself.
Seeing my attention wandering, Skylar sharply pecked at my ear. I winced, and I swore vehemently as he just sat there, beak in the air, looking regal and indignant. I rubbed ruefully at my ear and shot him a glare.
“Blasted bird! What the fuck did I ever do to you?” if hawks could smirk, I would swear he did just then.
